Map of Cemetery

Cedar Grove Cemetery was established in 1825 on the northern limit of the City of Norfolk, in Norfolk County; ensuing from an ordinance prohibiting further burials within the city limits. The ordinance was a result of a consensus of health officials of the time who believed that disease (including Yellow Fever) was being spread by the miasma of decaying corpses. Prior to this date, one was either buried on ones own property in a family plot or in St. Paul's Episcopal Churchyard or one of several potter's fields. Burial Records for Cedar Grove Cemetery are located in the Cemetery Office in Elmwood Cemetery. By Tim Bonney
