NOTE: This is whom I believe to be Zachariah W. Arnold's parents. This Wm. Arnold has two sons under the age of 10 which fits with Zachariah's known age and that of his younger brother, William Arnold Jr. This man also was a slave owner, it is known that Zachariah W. Arnold was born into a family who believed in slavery and the Gray family, whom he married into, had slaves.

The property that Wm. and Mary Arnold purchased from the Widow Wright in 1795 was given to their son Zachariah in 1799 as his birth right. This property sat on the Beaverdam Branch of the Reedy River in Laurens County on the Abbeville County line.

b) John Arnold - 1800 Census Records (src. AFAS, Vol. 1, No. 2, pg. 78) (pg. 240 on Laurens Co. 1800 Census Records - 2 m under 10; 1 m 26-45; 3 f under 10; 2 f 10-16; 1 f 26-45, 4 slaves) - Was born between 1755-1774

NOTE: According to this census, this John Arnold was born between 1755-1774 thus making him the right age to be the John Arnold who married Barbara Pettus. I believe this is that John Arnold who is said to have moved to Laurens County with his parents, William Arnold and Mary Davenport. They settled approximately twenty miles north on the north side of Saluda River, but by the time of John's death, they had moved to Abbeville County with John's family.

- 1810 Laurens County Census, pg. 019 (age. 45 up)

NOTE: William Arnold, Samuel Arnold and Rev. Zachariah Arnold are listed on top of each other on the census records. It is believed that Samuel and Zachariah are the sons to this William Arnold who is over 45 years old and owns no slaves.

k) Rev. Zechariah Arnold - d. 1829 Laurens County, SC (born abt. 1775)

- 1810 Laurens County Census, pg. 019 (age 26-45)

"Laurens County Deed Book G, pg. 312; Dec 7, 1798; John Bowman or Mercer Co., KY to John Willard, 118 ac. On s. side of Reedy River . . . Wit. Lewis Graves, Zechariah Arnold, Geor. Morgan, Z. Bailey, J.P.

"Laurens County Deeds Book G, pg. 138: Dec 26, 1799; George Hearn and w. Lucy to Samuel Arnold, 173 ac. On Beaverdam Br. Of Reedy River . . . Wit. Drury Mosely, Zechariah Arnold, John McGehee, Lewis Graves, J.P. "

NOTE: This Zachariah Arnold was a minister and he married a woman by the name of Mary. Children of Zachariah and Mary Arnold are: William Anthony Arnold; Mary Arnold West; Rebecca Arnold Flynn and Sarah Arnold Savage. Most of the children left South Carolina about 1840 and moved to Monroe County, Mississippi where they lived out their lives.

The parents of this Zachariah Arnold are believed to be William and Mary Arnold. Siblings would be: William Jr. b. abt. 1770 m. Ann; Samuel, b. abt 1772; Reuben, b. Dec. 13, 1773 d. June 28, 1847 St. Clair County, Alabama m. Elizabeth Boskins Moore.

This Zachariah Arnold did not believe in slavery nor did his children. In every census that he or his family are on, there is never any mention of slaves. It easy to find is family on tax records and census records because they all own very little land and never claim much on their taxes. He lived a modest lifestyle, practicing what he preached.

l) Nancy Arnold - 1800 Census Records (src. AFAS, Vol. 1, No. 2, pg. 80) (pg. 234 on Laurens Co. 1800 Census Records - 1 m under 10; 2 f under 10; 1 f 26-45, no slaves) - Was born between 1755-1774.

"James Arnold and Willis Arnold and all to Caleb Allen. $170 for 164 acres on the Ford Creek waters of the Tyger' River. Land adjoins Nathaniel Woodruff's and Joseph Woodruff's lands. Signed, "We the heirs of John Arnold's Estate": William Arnold, James Arnold, Willis Arnold, Jonathan Crook, Richard Shackleford. Wit: Joseph Crook, William Crock, Jeremiah Crook. Renunciation of the Dower: Laurens District, S.C. Thomas Wright, one of the Justices of the Quorum for the said District, certified that Nancy Arnold, the wife of the within named John Arnold, dec'd, appeared and declared that she released her interest and claim of dower. Deed Inst. 5 Mar 1816, flower release inst. 6 Mar 1816, rec. 30 Mar 1816." (src. "Spartanburg County, South Carolina Deeds (Books A-Z), Book P", p 38)

NOTE: On the census for 1800 Laurens County, this Nancy Arnold was living alone with 3 minor children, no husband. I believe this to be the Nancy Mitchum, widow of John Arnold who was dead by 1800. It is a known fact that John and Nancy's daughter, Lucy B. Arnold married Jonathan Crook. Here we have "Jonathan Crook" as one of the heirs (acting for his wife) to the John Arnold estate. Even though she lived in Laurens County, she inherited the property in Spartanburg County after her husband's death. Here she is giving it to her children before her death.

John's brother was Absolum Arnold and he migrated to Tippah County, Mississippi with Lucy, the daughter of John and Nancy Mithcum Arnold and her husband where they are buried.

John Arnold and Nancy Mitchum's children were; James, William aka Willis), Lucy B. Arnold Crook, Fannie Arnold Shackleford, George W. Arnold, Nancy, Sally, Polly..
