PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY:

a) Thomas Arnold - 1777 purchased 108 acres on both sides of Sawney's Creek while living in Cumberland County from George Nix in Prince Edward County. Deed mentions George Nix purchasing property originally from Elkanah Jennings.

- Thomas Arnold sold this same land to William Arnold for 100 pounds in 1783

- Found on the 1783 Prince Edward County Census - 3 Whites / 3 Blacks.

NOTE: I believe this to be the Thomas Arnold who married Mary Jennings and who moved to Oglethorpe County, Georgia in the late 1790's. Thomas Arnold and Mary Jennings had children: Zachariah (who married Nancy Beasly and Charlotte Traver); Elizabeth (married Mordicia Hill); John; Susannah; Thomas Jr. (married Frances Jennings); William; Millie (married Edward Nix) and Mary Arnold (married David LockHart).

b) James Arnold - 1768 purchased 177 acres on both sides of Natts Branch on the North side of Vaughn's Creek while living in Cumberland County from Thomas Lee and Even Lee of Buckingham County.

c) John Arnold - 1763 was living in Prince Edward County and purchased 200 acres on the upper side of Vaugh's Creek from John Green. In the 1790's John Arnold Sr. is found selling off his property for taxes owed by the estate of John Bostick. Wife's name was "Sarah". Children listed in will below.

"21 Oct 1793: Rec 21 Oct 1793: John Arnold, Sr. of Prince Edward Co to Grantee, John Arnold Jr. of Prince Edward County. 20 pounds for 185 acres in Prince Edward County on both sides of Rough Creek, "it being the same tract of land whereon the said John Arnold, Sr. now lives"; bounded by Charles Simmons, now William Tynes. "16 Jun 1794: Rec. 21 Jul 1794: Grantor, Philemon Holcombe, "Late high sheriff of the County of Prince Edward" to Grantor, John Arnold of Prince Edward County. 4 pounds, 2 & 8 for 40 acres. Land sold for 4 pounds, 2 & 8 in 17__, for taxes owed by estate of John Bostick. Witnesses: J. Holcombe, Wal Holcome and Andrew Johnston. Signed: Philm. Holcombe". (Src. "10 Jan 1804; Rec. 19 Jun 1804: Grantor, John Arnold and Sarah his wife to James Davenport. $1,000 for 200 acres in Prince Edward County on waters of Vaughan's Creek, bounded by Jesse Ferguson, William Bennet, James Gillam, thence to land that belonged to Daniel Woods, and along some other lines to the beginning, it being the whole of the land deeded to me by Massanella Womack whereon Thomas Arnold lately resided. "Will Book 5, page 39. Will of John Arnold. I John Arnold of the County of Prince Edward and State of Virginia . . . I lend to my wife, Sarah Arnold, the tract of land whereon I live, together with all and every other part of my estate, except the tract of land hereafter mentioned, after her decease, the whole to be sold at publick auction in a reasonable credit and the proceeds of the said sale to be divided amongst my children and grandchildren as hereinafter will be directed. Graqndson Hobson Arnold, son of my son William Arnold . . . son and daughters of my son Moses Arnold . . . my son James Arnold . . . my son Champion Arnold one hundred and sixty six acres of land it being all now remaining mine of my old tract adjoining John Cheadle and others. - 1783 found on Prince Edward County Census - 7 whites / 12 blacks

NOTE: I believe this to be the brother of Thomas Arnold and Mary Jennings and the property sold by John in 1804 was at one time their property. Their parents were William Arnold and Elizabeth Bostick of Halifax County, which would explain why John Arnold was paying the taxes from John Bostick's estate. This John Arnold also lived in Halifax and Cumberland County, Virginia.

D) John Arnold Jr. - 1793 received property from parents in Prince Edward Co.

Note: married Mary Cason, daughter of Seth Cason December 13, 1784 in Prince Edward County and had children: Doctor, Stephen, Cleburn, Rhoda Harris, Sally Wood and Nancy hill Arnold.

E) Zachariah Arnold - Feb. 1785 married Nancy Beasley, daughter of John Beasley, deceased. Guardian John Johns consents. Sur. Moses Arnold.

"February court 1804; Josiah Hurt, Judith Cason, and Fuqua Beasley, administrators of Benjamin Hurt, deceased, plaintiffs, against Zachariah Arnold and Obediah Hurt, defendants; in chancery. It appearing to the satisfaction of this court that the defendant Zachariah Arnold is not a resident of this state, on the motion of the plaintiffs by their attorney, it is ordered that the defendant Obediah Hurt do not pay or convey away to the defendant Zachariah Arnold any money which May be in his hands due to the said Arnold, but that he hold the same, subject to the further order of this court."

"March court 1804: Josiah Hurt, Judith Cason and Fuqua Beasley, administrators of Benjamin Hurt, deceased, plaintiffs, against Zachariah Arnold and Obediah Hurt, defendants; in chancery. Defendant Zachariah Arnold, not an inhabitant of this state, to be given notice to appear at this court 1 May 1804, with notice of same to be printed in Richmond newspaper."

Note: this is the Zachariah Arnold who moved first to Oglethorpe County, Georgia and then moved to Lincoln County, Tennessee where he died and is buried. Son of Thomas Arnold and Mary Jennings.

Zachariah Arnold also is found on numerous court records in Prince Edward County in 1791. Apparently he traveled back and forth from Georgia to Virginia. Because he states on the court records that he resides in Georgia. In one case, Stephen Pettus came into court and undertook for the defendant. Zachariah Arnold was the plaintiff. Zachariah's in-law, William Beasley also took him to court.

F) William Arnold - 1781 was living in Prince Edward County and purchases 50 acres from Elkanah Jennings on the waters of Sawney's Creek.

Note: I believe this to be the son of Thomas Arnold and Mary Jennings who moved to Oglethorpe County, Georgia in the late 1790's.

G) Robert Jennings Sr. - 1794 left will in Prince Edward County.

Note: Robert Jennings was born abt 1726 Hanover, d. October 20 1794 in Prince Edward Co. Was son of William Jennings and Mary Allen. He was a brother of Mary Jennings, wife of Thomas Arnold.

Robert married Rachel Patterson-Allen and they had children: Allen (m. Nancy Mary Gilliam); Elizabeth; John; William (m. Polly Kidd); frances (m. Thomas Arnold, son of Zachariah Arnold and grandson of Thomas Arnold and Mary Jennings); Robert Jr. (M. Elizabeth Arnold); Agnes (m. Unknown Arnold); Cain (m. Ester Baldwin); David (m. Sarah Glenn Dabney and moved to Maury Co., Tenn.); clement (m. Ann Winston cook and then Elizabeth Bennett. Moved to Sumner Co., Tn); Samuel (m. Judiah Simmons); Richard (m. Elizabeth Wood and Nancy Millican) and Doctor Jennings (m. Rhoda Wiley).

H) Stephen Pettus - 1780 is neighbor of James Arnold on the upper side of Vaughn's Creek. Is also mentioned on court case for Zachariah Arnold and he was a witness on the will for Robert Jennings in Prince Edward County.

Note: is probably the son of Stephen Pettus Sr., born abt. 1679 Va and died 1767 in Hanover Co, and Mary Dabney.

I) Robert Jennings Jr. - born abt. 1764, son of Robert Jennings and Rachel Patterson-Allen. Married Elizabeth Arnold.

Note: Hazel Arnold MacIvor states in the AFAS that Robert Jennings Jr. Appears in the Georgia records in 1786. Left Prince Edward County, moved to South Carolina and then Georgia. Robert Jennings Jr. Died in Georgia 1843.

J) John Dabney - 1787 purchased 118 acres on both sides of Sawney's Creek (original property owned by Thomas Arnold) from William Arnold of Prince Edward County.

Note: Stephen Pettus Jr's mother was Mary Dabney who married Stephen Pettus Sr. John Dabney is probably her brother.

K) Samuel Wright - 1816 received one bond on the estate of John Arnold Sr.

L) John Wright - March 18, 1775 will on file in Prince Edward County.

HALIFAX COUNTY:

Halifax County, located in southside Virginia, was created in 1752 from. At the time of its creation, its territory included what is today Pittsylvania, Patrick and Henry Counties and parts of Franklin and Floyd Counties. Its present-day boundaries were established in 1766 when Pittsylvania County was created from the western portion of the County. In addition to the Virginia Counties of Pittsylvania, Charlotte, Campbell and Mecklenberg, Halifax County is also bordered by the North Carolina Counties of Caswell, Person and Granville

- 1801 William Arnold's will was signed listing no wife and children: William Jr., deceased son David and his wife Mary; John; Elizabeth, Abe (or Anna) and her son Amariah m. Griggs; and Bethea Arnold. Executors were family friend, William terry and Wm. Arnold's son, Wm. Arnold Jr. Witnesses that signed were Thomas Malone, David (x) bell, Francis (x her mark) bell, and Wm. (X) Ownen.

C) John Arnold - (Src. 1782 Halifax head of households - 8 whites, 5 blacks)

- 1772 sold property in Halifax on Aslins Creek bounded by Francis Arnold, George Green and Daniel Terry, while he was living in Spotsylvania to Margaret Wilson.

D) Francis Arnold - 1769 witnessed deed with Thomas Davenport Jr. and John Hendrick. Is living in Halifax County but still had dealings with Cumberland County.

"1 june 1771. Rec. 15 Aug 1771: grantor, Gervis Green of province of Carolina to grantee, Francis Arnold of Halifax County, Va. 50 pounds. 100 acres in Halifax Co. On Miery Creek, bounded by deep spring at head of the dubble (sic) branch, Robert Boyd, Winfery (?), John Moor, Thomas Justice. Witnesses: Wm. "20 june 1773; rec. 15 July 1773: grantor, Francis Arnold of Halifax Co. To grantee, messr.. Andrew Cockran, William Cunningham & comp. of Glasgow, merchants. 130 pounds (debt) - 5 shillings in hand. 444 acres in Halifax Co. On Miery Creek, being the tract whereon the said Arnold now lives, as by deeds from Jones, Green and Thomas Jester (?). recorder in the County court of Halifax, also 1 negro man named Will, 16 head of cattle, 16 head of sheep, 2 feather beds, and much other personal property". "18 March 1779; rec. 18 March 1779: grantor, Francis Arnold of Halifax Co. To grantee, John Chappell of Halifax Co. 600 pounds for 444 acres being part of two tracts of land granted to the said Francis Arnold by two deeds. The one from George Green and the other from John Justice; in Halifax Co., on the South side of Miery Creek, bounded by Justice, Wilson, Hendricks, Jones and Moore. Witnesses (none listed). E) Bedford Davenport - (Src. 1782 Halifax tax list w/1 white, 2 slaves, 3 horses, 0 mules and 11 head of cattle) son of James and Catherine Davenport.

F) James Davenport - died in Halifax Co. 1780. Married Catherine DeJernette.

Note: James Davenport was the son of Thomas Davenport and Grace Terry of Cumberland County. He was born about 1692 in King William County. James married Catherine DeJernette by 1747 and had children Bedford, Joseph, James, Rhody, Catrin, Mourning and Anna.

G) Catherine Davenport - (Src. 1782 Halifax tax list w/0 white, 7 slaves, 3 horses, 0 mules and 18 head of cattle) widow of James Davenport who died 1780.

H) Henry Davenport - 1805 married Elizabeth Easley

"16 Jan 1805 (Halifax Co. Marriages) Henry Davenport married Elizabeth Easley, daughter of Robert Easley, surety Smith Davenport, Thomas Davenport consents for son Henry and witnessed by John Easley and Jane Davenport"

28 Dec 1815 (Ga. Gen. mag. No. 96) Halifax Co. DB 25, p. 515 Henry Davenport and wife Elizabeth of Ga. To John Ransome of Halifax 64 ac. On Miry Creek being part allotted to Henry and Elizabeth, late Elizabeth Easley, heir of Robert Easly.

Note: this Henry Davenport, born august 26, 1784 in Halifax County, Va and is the son of Thomas Davenport and Elizabeth Guerrant. He moved his family to in the early 1800's to Oglethorpe County, Ga and he is buried at the old Salem Crossroads in Oglethorpe County, Georgia.

Henry Davenport and Elizabeth Easley had children: Amanda, Thomas, Henry, Robert, Smith, Elizabeth E. and William Davenport. Henry's son, William, married Elvira Jane Arnold, daughter of Zachariah W. Arnold of Abbeville County, South Carolina and old Tishomingo County, Mississippi.
