Veteran's Memorial

Although the town of Freeport was planned by William and David Todd in 1796, there are notes that one Miss FAITS, who drowned in Buffalo Creek in 1794, was the first burial in what became Freeport's burial grounds. The old cemetery was called the ancient Freeport Cemetery in various articles, when Robert McKee, Editor of the Freeport Journal, published a list of tombstones still standing in 1903, in the lot on Fourth Street near the Presbyterian Church. A new graveyard was established in 1865 on a hill overlooking the town, located in South Buffalo Township. But by 1903 the remains of those in the old cemetery were being removed to the new Freeport Cemetery.

Following is the list of names of those headstones still in existence in 1903 at the old cemetery.

Armstrong, James, 2, Born May 6, 1773, Died Apr 18, 1859. Section F, plot 65. James Armstrong was living on land adjoining Freeport as early as 1817. His wife, Mary, was an heir of William Todd, and brought the family more land with an inheritance. James, wife Mary and Nancy Armstrong can be found on the 1850 census in South Buffalo Township, living next to the Griffin family. James was born in Ireland and may be related to both Richard and Thomas Armstrong who are interred next to him. (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Armstrong, Rev. Richard, 2, Born Dec 23, 1773, Died [July 14, 1859]. Section F, plot 66. Marked as illegible, this stone for the Reverend Richard Armstrong is listed in the records with his date of death in 1859 at age 84. The 1860 US Federal Census Mortality Schedule lists his death in Allegheny County. His birth was in Ireland, his occupation a clergyman, death was in July and cause of death was dysentery. Beers History of Freeport Borough states that he died on August 19, 1859 and he was a Methodist minister. Some family histories give yet another date of death, August 16th. (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Armstrong, [Sophia], 2, Section F, plot 66. An illegible stone with only the date of 1842 to identify it in any way. Sophia Armstrong is on the list of the old Freeport Cemetery tombstones with the date of death as 1842. Since this stone is placed in a concrete foundation with other Armstrong stones from the old graveyard, the date on it can identify it as Sophia's, even though the other lettering is mostly faded away. The only historic reference found about her was the 1840 census of Freeport with Sophia listed as head of a household containing 3 females from 15 to 19 years of age. (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Armstrong, Thomas, 2, Died August 7, 1851. Section F, plot 65. Since part of this old stone, moved from the old Freeport Cemetery, is imbedded in the cement foundation, the lower lines are unable to be read. It is marked as illegible in the record book at Freeport library. Various on-line family trees list him as being born in Ireland about 1772. Many have his date of death as November 1851 in Sugarcreek, Armstrong County, but that date was based on his will being registered on November 19th. The will mentions his daughter Eleanor being bequeathed 50 acres from his property on the northern bend in the Allegheny River. Other children with wife Maria Stubbs include William, John and Adam, who along with Eleanor, were all being born between 1802 and 1812. (contributed by Diane Nichols)

Bole, James, 2, Died ---------, Aged [_9yr 10 m, 14 d]. Section F, GAR lot. Other than the name, little is clear on this tombstone. Research has found that a James Bole served in Co F of the 123rd PA Infantry during the Civil War. The 123rd was recruited in Allegheny City, and James enlisted on August 8, 1862 and was mustered out with his company on May 13, 1863. One on-line source has a James Bole listed as the son of David Bole and Elizabeth Shaeffer, who married in Armstrong County in 1821. Their son James was born on September 6, 1822 in South Buffalo Township and died on December 13, 1892. It was mentioned that 6 of David's son served in the Civil War, although little other information is available. David was the son of James Bole and Mary Painter, both of whom were interred in the old Freeport Cemetery, along with Jame's father, James. (contributed by Diane Nichols)
