For those that are perhaps seeing these transcriptions for the first time, the transcriptions may give on first glance, the appearance of a great many typos, so I feel obligated to explain that the abundance of y, m, and d represent abbreviations for year, month and day. Although you will find most engravers follow similar patterns, it seems there are several different abbreviations used to represent these three time terms including: y, yr, yrs, yr's & years; m. mo, mos, mo's, and months; d. da, das, da's, and days and on rare occasions, h, hr, hrs, hr's, and hours. I tend not to use commas except to separate surname from given name, given name from date, except where found on actual inscription, same goes for the [.] (period). When you see the symbol [_] (underscore), I use it to represent missing or unreadable letters, or if a lot of letters are unreadable I may express it by several periods, such as Jos...h . Sometimes you will find raised letters such as "c" in surnames such as in McClain, or if the engraver added smaller letters that were left out and added later, when I encounter them, tend to express them, when possible, as found on the stone. Sometimes engravers will use the latin term Æ or æ, this is just a term that generally replaces the word "aged". One last comment, all actual text found engraved, will come first in bold text. All comments, observations, personal knowledge remarks added by submitter, concerning an individual, but not inscribed on stone, will then proceed in regular text. ~R.M.Sizelove~

I wish to present my transcriptions of the loved ones buried at Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery. Pole Ridge Road is located in section 34 between Blue Creek Rd. and Pleasant Ridge Rd. (TR 182). Accessible from SR 65, south on Blue creek to Route 182, turn right. Follow this road until you see Mt. Carmel Community Church on left side of road. Cemetery located behind church; there is ample parking next to church. This church was listed in local book about the area, printed in 1880's, as a Methodist Episcopal Church, co-founded and built by brothers, John & Adam Schooley, after 1876. The first burial in this cemetery being Adam Schooley took place in 1878. There is no mention of this cemetery in the 1876 Atlas of Hocking Co. All information transcribed from memorial stones will appear as regular text. All information written in brackets[ ] will indicate observations, personal knowledge, and /or descriptions of conditions and not information inscribed on stones. Each row of stones, read beginning nearest road, working towards back and numbering each row from right to left. This position established by viewing from the road, facing church and cemetery. There is an informational plaque attached to the church sign, reminding folks that their contributions to help maintain the cemetery are appreciated and where donations can be sent. I have the address and will give it to anyone interested in contributing to the upkeep of this private cemetery. Although I don't know this for fact, my best guess is that this is a privately church owned cemetery. This cemetery is located on a relatively level area, adjacent to, and behind the church. It is nicely maintained and most of the stones, with few exceptions, are easily read. There are just over 300 individuals that I have knowledge of buried here. I am solely responsible for all transcriptions contained in this article. I have been careful, but make no warrantees to being 100% accurate. Use this information as a tool, but don't substitute it for state or county records and documentation, when available. If you have any information that improves upon the transcriptions provided here, please let me know and I will update this article. R.M.Sizelove, Sr. Revised 06 Jan., 2000. New information given to me, revised 22 April, 2000, revised 31 July, 2000, revised 23 Oct. 2000. My last visit to this cemetery was on 06 Jan., 2000, revised 04 April, 2001, last revised 01 Jan., 2003. I give you permission to copy material in this report for private family research, however, my intentions are not to give up my copyrights to these transcriptions or the photo documentation connected to it. © 2000 - 2013. Note: Because of the layout of this cemetery, the first row doesn't start at the road. It starts near the lower back corner of the cemetery. The second row is actually the first full row starting near the road. I have a great many ancestors buried here, some have memorials, others do not. but have death certificates to support some missing memorials.
