This cross marks the site of the first Catholic church
In Jersey township built of logs by devout Catholic pioneers
In 1850 and placed under the patronage of Saint Joseph.
The log chapel was razed and a frame church begun which the
Most reverend Sylvester M. Rosecrans, Bishop of Columbus,
Dedicated in October, 1876.
The ediface was completed and blessed by
Bishop John A. Watterson, second Bishop of Columbus,
On June 11, 1882. Later the parishoners moved and
Formed the Parish of the Ascension in Johnstown.
After many years of disuse the abandoned frame church
Which stood on this site was removed in 1948.
May the memory of the devoted Catholic pioneers
Inspire us with zeal and loyalty to the faith
