SEARCHLIGHT CEMETERY PROJECT - 1990
This cemetery was established, January, 1906. It is the third town ceme-
ery established for Searchlight. Through the years, a number of the original
wooden grave markers have disappared, or markers were never erected.
With the loss of those grave markers many of the earlier burial locations are
not identified. A few grave sites were re-marked when early day residents
Ella Kay and Marge Sandquist, identified burial locations they could remem-
ber. Because it was felt that many of the earlier burials were located in the
center of the cemetery, this area has been fenced off, so future generations
do not use this area for burials. At the location of this marker and flagpole,
erected by the Searchlight VFW and VFW Auxiliary1, there are two un-
identified burial sites. Burial date on one is Feb. 1926, the other is thought
to be a Japanese burial, as early day residents can remember Japanese
offerings at this site. There were also several reported burials at two of the
local mining sites. Through the efforts of Las Vegas Boy Scout, Aaron Well-
born, using the newspaper research of project director Jane Overy, the
marker at this site contains the names of some early day burials. This marker
was donated by U.S. Senator Harry Reid and Palm Mortuary. As more
information is collected more names will be added. This area is dedicated to
all who are buried in the Searchlight area known or unknown.
The Searchlight cemetery entrance marker was erected May 21, 1989 by
Carl and Jane Overy. Funding for the entrance and memorial area was
provided by the Searchlight Senior Center. Others who provided time,
energy or material to complete the project were: Mike Bolton, Sr.; Jimmy
Bole, Bud Burns, Pat Burns, Riley Dong, Verlie Dong; Vic DeVries; John
French; Byron Green; Steve Griffith; Judy Hill; Edward Holbart; Katy
Miller; R.V. Miller; Edward Millren; C. Scott Overy; Pat Patterson; Billy
Randolph; Les Rasmussen; Mike Smith; Malcomb Walker; John Yeager;
Clark County Public Works; Nevada Power; Nevada State Highway
Department; Project director Jane Overy; Plaque donated by Southwest
Services of Las Vegas, Nevada.
