Vernon Parish was created on 1871 , from Natchitoches, Rapides and Sabine Parishes and the parish was named in honor of Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, the first U.S. President . The Parish seat is Leesville .

It is borderd by Sabine Parish (northwest), Natchitoches Parish (north), Rapides Parish (east), Allen Parish (southeast), Beauregard Parish (south), Newton County, TX (west) .
