  2. Rev. J.D. Hughes, Life and Experiences of a Pioneer Preacher (Banner-Clanton). He was born June 1, 1861, in Macon County, near Loachapoka, Alabama. They moved to this place during the Civil War in which his father became a solider and served four years. His grandfather had slaves. At the close of the Civil War his father moved near Dadeville in Tallapoosa County. He was six at this time. They moved from Dadeville, to LaFayette, in Chambers County and lived there four years. During that time he stayed very sick and his mother thought he was dying. He was baptized by Brother Shun Kelley, the pastor of Shady Grove. and joined the church in March 1874 and was baptized in May. He entered High School at Rockford Alabama in 1885. In 1886 Olive Branch called for his ordination. He met his future wife for the first time at a social at the home of L.S. Lee near Rockford. That was her home. Ella and her brother Joe, came to Salem when he was baptizing forty people at the close of one of his meetings. Mr. Lee (Ella's father) sold his home and was moving to Morgan County near Somerville. Ella and J D decided that they would be married the next fall and he would come for her then. They married each other on November 18, 1886. They had six childre who lived to be grown: Clara Mae, Annie, Charles Dawson, Ella Ophelia, Luther Dewey, and Claudie Joy. Three of the eldest children passed away in 1935,1936, and 1937. For fiveyears they lived one-quarter of a mile of Union Church. They moved from there to Salter Alabama a short distance from Union. The neighbors asked that they take the Salter post office, he only agreed when they made his wife the postmistress.
