TIGERTON CHRONICLE
Friday, May 23, 1943

JOSEPH ORTNER, SR. DIED ON SATURDAY, MAY 8

Joseph Ortner, Sr, age 80, died at his farm home on Route 2, Tigerton at 11:30 PM Saturday, May 8. He had been ill for several years, but immediate cause of death was a heart ailment. Funeral services were held at St. Anthony's church, Tigerton, at 9:00 AM May 11. He had been a member of St. Anthony congregation for many years. Interment took place in Union cemetery at Tigerton, with Wm. Forest, Wm. Steinke, John Hoffman, Anton Mauser, Herman Schmidt, Jr., and John Bach as pallbearers.

Joseph Ortner was born in Bavaria, Germany, January 10, 1863, son of Joseph and Anna Marie Ortner. He came to America in 1886 and lived for about one year at Oshkosh, when he came to his present home in Shawano county. In December 1887, at St. Rose Catholic church in Clintonville, he was united in marriage to Hildegarde Ortinger, who preceded him in death seven years ago. To this union were born nine children; Mary, Mrs. Otto Oestreich, Tlgerton; Joseph Ortner, Jr., Clintonville; Adella, Mrs. Herman Schmidt, Tigerton; Louis and Oscar, at home; Mrs. Hannah Orredatal, Clintonville; Raymond Ortner, Tigerton. Two daughters are deceased, Mrs. Herman Petran, and Anna Marie Ortner. There are 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ortner had been occupied in farming all his life and had lived at his present farm home in Shawano county for 27 years.

MRS. AMELIA MIRKES DIED SUDDENLY FRIDAY

Mrs. Amelia Mirkes of this city, mother of Mrs. Earl Vomastic, passed away suddenly yesterday afternoon about l:00. Funeral services have tentatively been set for Monday morning at Sacred Heart church at 10:00. The family is still awaiting word from Arno Mirkes of Aberdeen, South Dakota, who recently entered the service.

Mrs. Mirkes, nee Zeuske, was born in Berlin, Germany, April 10, 1879 and came to this country with her parents at the age of 4 years, settling at Tigerton.

She was married to Frank Mirkes in Tigerton and after living there four years the family moved to Shawano. He died in 1913.

She is survived by six children, Floyd of Sheboygan, Vernon of Manitowoc, Lester of Sturgeon Bay, Leighton of Manitowoc, Mrs. Earl Vomastic of Shawano, and Arno of Aberdeen, South Dakota. There are 8 grandchildren, two brothersand three sisters, Herman Seiske of Split Rock, Paul Zeuske of Split Rock, Mrs. Walter Cain of Ontonagon, Mich., Mrs. Albert Spitzer of Tigerton and Mrs. Percy Coty of Merrill.
