Maple Grave Memorial

Photo by Loretta-Marie Dimond, submitted June 2009

Historical marker placed in 1950 for the Seattle Centennial at the niches/graves site for Van Asselt/Duwamish pioneers Jacob and Samuel Maple, whose bodies were disinterred, cremated and returned to their former donation claim.

Jacob Maple (died September 2, 1884, age 84 years) and his son Samuel A. Maple (died July 23, 1880, age 53 years) were originally buried in the Comet Lodge Cemetery, 2200 South Graham Street, Seattle, Washington. Both are in the 1880 US Census, King County, Washington, along with Robert, Jacob's son and Samuel's brother. Jacob, age 82, is a widower, a farmer, born in Pennsylvania, father born in Holland, mother born in Pennsylvania. Samuel A., age 53, is single, works on a farm and was born in Ohio. Robert, age 59, is divorced, a marble cutter, and was also born in Ohio. Samuel and Robert's mother was born in Pennsylvania.

The cemetery was eventually used for other purposes. Not sure if all the graves were moved but there came a time when city officials denied the cemetery's existence.
