Harrison County was formed 1784 from Monongalia Co., OH. The county began to diminish in size in 1787 when Randolph County was formed.
Other counties were formed, in part, from Harrison County land: 1798 Wood, 1816 Lewis, 1842 Marion, 1843 Barbour and Ritchie, 1844 Taylor,and 1845 Doddridge.
On June 20, 1863, the state of West Virginia was formed from the western part of Virginia. Today, Harrison County is part of the state of West Virginia.
