Goochland County, named for Lieutenant-Governor William Gooch, was formed in 1728 from Henrico County. During its early history, Goochland consisted of King William Parish (1728-1749), Saint James Northam Parish (1774-), Saint James Parish (1728-1744), Saint James Southam Parish (1744-1749). Counties formed from Goochland are Albemarle, Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Buckingham, Campbell, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Nelson, and Powhatan. The county seat is Goochland.
