Lewis Author: Hank Lewis [] Date: 23 Dec 1999 12:00 PM Surnames: Lewis, Raley, Harper, Bryant, Akins, Davis Classification: Biography MEMORIAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY Navarro, Henderson, Anderson, Limestone, Freestone and Leon Counties Containing a history of this important section of the great State of Texas, from the earliest periods of occupancy to the present time, together with glimpses of its prospects; also, Biographical mention of many of the pioners and prominent Citizens of the present time, and full page portraits of some of the most eminent men of this section. CHICAGO The Lewis Publishing Company 1893 Geo. W. Lewis, a merchant, farmer and stock raiser of Limestone Co., was born in Jones Co., Miss., Jan. 10, 1839; a son of Moses and Elizabeth (Elzey) Lewis, Natives of S.C. They moved with their parents to Miss. in an early day, and the country was then filled with Indians. The father was only 2 years of age when he left his native state; was a farmer and trader by occupation and in 1858 located in Polk Co., Tex., then a comparatively new county. He served in the state militia during the late war, and in 1867 removed to Wise Co., this state, where he died in 1875. His wife departed this life in 1860. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis were the parents of 9 children as follows: G.W., our subject; Mary, deceased, was the wife of Columbus Davis; Howell, of this county; Irvine, who was killed at the battle of Chicamauga in 1863; Warren, deceased, and his family reside in Grimes Co.; Coleman, deceased, and his family reside in Velasco; Barbara. deceased; Catherine, wife of J.O. Akins, of Grimes Co.; and John, a resident of Limestone Co. In 1861 Mr. Lewis married a second time to Miss Ann Cain, and they had 3 children: Elizabeth, James and Nancy. The father was a member of the Masonic order. George W. Lewis removed with his father to [from] Miss., and remained at home until the beginning of the late war. In 1861 he joined Co. K, 5th Texas Infantry, served in the Army of Virginia, but on account of ill health, was discharged after 6 months. After remaining at home 1 month he enlisted in Co. H, Elmours Regiment; was stationed at Galveston Island and served with his Command until the close of the war. After returning to Polk Co. our subject engaged in farming on rented land, and for the first few years was obliged to go a distance of 4 miles to a mill. After the close of the war he had left only 1 horse, which he sold for $20; and immediately paid the entire amount for corn. He rented land in Polk Co. for 2 years, then in Grimes Co. 2 years, and in 1870 purchased 240 acres of unimproved land for which he paid $800 cash. Mr. Lewis erected a good farm building, cultivated 150 acres, and in 1875 sold his land for $2200. He then purchased town property at Bremond, Robertson Co., where he was engaged in merchandising and stock raising until 1878, and in that year moved to Kosse, Limestone Co. While there he was engaged in farming and stockraising on 70 acres of land. In 1888 Mr. Lewis came to his farm on Big Hill, where he owns a ranch of 450 acres, with 250 under cultivation, also has another farm of 480 acres of which 400 is cultivated. Two years after moving to his farm he located at Thornton, where he has a beautiful residence. In January, 1892, he embarked in the mercantile business in this village, and now has a fine trade. Mr. Lewis was married in 1860, to Miss E.J. Raley, a native of Alabama and a daughter of Charles and Jane (Finn) Raley, natives also of that state. They came to Texas sometime in the 40's, where the father followed farming and stockraising. They reared a family of 6 children, Viz; Marion of Reynolds Co., Tex.; Eliza J., wife of our subject; William, also a resident of Reynolds Co.; Benjamin F., deceased; John, deceased; and Robert O., of Reynolds Co. Both Mr. and Mrs. Raley are now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis have had 9 children; James, deceased; Georgiana, wife of J.M. Bryant of Limestone Co.; Barbara, now Mrs. J.B. Hooper [Harper], of this county; Ada, deceased; John H., George W., Robert O., and Charles G. at home. [dau. Alice dec'd by 1892]. Mrs. Lewis is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. Our subject is a pronounced Democrat of the old school, although he takes no great interest in politics. he has never aspired to public office, yet his influence is sought by local politicians. -----The above excerpted from "MEMORIAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY" (of Texas), The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, 1893 ----- [] Fort Parker massacre Author: [] Date: 17 Dec 1999 12:00 PM Surnames: Parker During the raid on Fort Parker in Limestone County May 19, 1836, What were the names of the Parkers acctually killed, and did any of the wounded survive? Betty Stinecipher stinecipher@ofgeorgia.com [] [] Lowery of Limestone Co. TX Author: Kevin Singer [] Date: 29 Jan 2000 12:00 PM Surnames: Lowery, Stephenson, Trimble Thanks for writing back. Concering the questions that you asked, I'll try to answer them as best as I can. 1. Death and place of Retency Foster. I don't know when or where she died. After reviewing my records, I noticed that Morgan Henry's wife on the 1860 census was different that the one on the 1850. 1850 list Retency as wife in Cobb County GA. The 1860 just list the initials T.G. I do not know if this is the same person or not. If this T.G. person is not the same as Retency (unless the T. stands for "tency"), then I don't know the birth mother of the later children before Nancy Stephenson. 2. From what I have studied, Nancy R. Stephenson, b April 6, 1833 in Alabama. She was married to James F. Stephenson, b 1831 in Alabama as well. Her maiden name is unknown at present. Here is a list of her known children from 1st husband James F. Stephenson: 1. James H. Stephenson, b 1854 TX 2. I.H., Stephenson (male), b 1857 TX 3. M.E. Stephenson, (female), b 1858 TX 4. N.J. Stephenson, (female), b 1860 TX 3. James Lowery's wife's name was Honor, her last name is unknown. She died in Oktibeha County Mississippi where her son Christopher Lowery lived and also died. Nothing more is known concerning her linage. 4. Indian blood. As far as I know, there is no Indian blood that I have found. I was told also from my great aunt who was born around the turn of the century and knew personally Marion J. Lowery, the brother of Morgan Henry Lowery, and she said that Marion J. Lowery was part indian. She did not state degree nor the tribe, she thought cherokee. From what I have been about to piece together, no individual has been shown to have Indian blood. Unless Honor was part Indian. If there is Indian blood it could come through the Trimble family, but as of now, I don't have any infromation on them to even assume that. The Lowery family and the Trimble family were Irish. Know concering the wives of Morgan Henry, I don't know if they may have had indian blood, but as far as our line, I don't know of anyone that has proven it. 5. I have listed that Morgan Henry Lowery died 1890 in Limestone County Texas. I do not know when or where Nancy died. I hope I have helped with some of my answers. If anyone else out there has anything else to add, then please do so. He was in Cobb County in 1850. His parents, John Wesley Lowery and Elizabeth Trimble were found on the Attala County, Mississippi census for 1850. By 1860 they were living in Limestone County Texas. You can find John Wesley and Elizabeth and their yongest 3 children living in 1850 in Attala County Mississippi, there were Moses Sanford Park Lowery, Marion J. Lowery, and Malissa Jane Lowery. If you do find some connection with the Cherokees, I would love to hear about it. There were many cherokees that were members of the Lowery family. But as I said earlier, no one has proven it. The only person that could have any would be: 1, Honor Lowery, wife of James Lowery. (Most believe that James Lowery was from NC, no one has proven who were his parents), 2. Charity Redwine who married John Trimble. Her linage is unknown, 3. Grace Trimble, the wife of James Trimble could be a possiblity. Since there is no information on her as present. She was the mother of John Trimble. I would love to discover if anyone did actually have any Indian Blood. I went to Limestone CO. TX a few years ago, and I don't believe I was able to find a cememtery with our Lowery family in it. In the beginning, Marion J. Lowery, brother to Morgan Henry, married a Howard woman who's grandfather was George G. Gentry. And this George Gentry own a lot of land. And the Lowery family bought land from this Gentry and there was a cememtry on his property or either he gave land for it, I don't recall, any way, most of the early markers are either missing or never were erected. I don't know where Morgan Henry is buried. Most likely in the same vicinity of Kosse, Limestone Co. There was a older town called Eutaw and was right near the area of Kosse, that predated the Kosse Community. I believe there is a cememtery there called the Old Eutaw cememtery and that is were many of the Gentry, Lowery and Howard and other related families are buried. Tibbs died at his home in the Shiloh community, surrounded by his wife and children and a large circle of friends and neighbors who had gone to be with him in his illness. The deceased was born in Alabama, October 24th 1840, and was 69 years, 4 months and 5 days old. He served 4 years in the confederate army as a member of Company F, in 26th Alabama Regiment, with Captains Clemons and Burguain. In the battle of Murfreesboro, Tenn., he was seriosly wounded and borne from the battle field. This wound affected his entire after life, and was apparent in his final sickness. Strangely enough, the bullet that wounded him passed through his body and dropped into his pocket. It is still in the possession of his family. One more brave defender of southern rights has "passed over the river to rest under the shade of trees" with war comrades of other days. There were five Tibbs brothers that went into the war, but two of them never returned. In October 1866, Mr. Tibbs professed a hope in Jesus and joined the Missionary Baptist Church, of which he was a memeber more than 43 years, and in which he was an ordained deacon more than 20 years. He was married to Miss Louisa Herring on December 20, 1866 and is survived by her and nine children-three sons and six daughters. Two daughters preceeded him to a better land. As a testimony to his christian character and influance, all of his children are members of the Baptist Church and have a hope of meeting their father in the great beyond. The body was buried at Prairie Grove on the afternoon of March 2nd, 1910, in the presence of a large crowd of relatives, neighbors and friends. F.F.Bledsoe, the associational missionary conducting the service. The wife has lost a loving husband, the children a kind father, the church a faithful member and the community a good citizen. Many friends sympathize with the family, in their bereavement, "but they sorrow not as those who have no hope." "Soldiers, rest, they warfare o'er. Sleep the sleep that knows no breaking. Dream of battle fields no more. Days of danger, nights of waking." ____________________________________________________________ This in same paper but differnet section. [] A. B. Allison, Dead-1910 Author: Alp [] Date: 10 Oct 1999 12:00 PM Surnames: Allison Classification: Obituary From Groesbeck Journal, Dated Feb. 3, 1910 Another Ex-Confederate Responds to the Last Summons and Rest"Beneath the Shade of the Tree" Again has the trumpets call sounded and once more has the brave soul of another soldier of the lost cause, abandoned it's tenement of clay and gone to join the host of kindred spirits who are emcamped beyond the pale realm. At 7:00 Saturday afternoon, just as the evening shades were gathering and night was casting it's sable garments over the earth, the tired spirit of A. B. Allison forsook its temporary abiding place, and began its journey to the Haven of Rest where there is neither suffering nor sorrow, and where the weary cease from trail and strife. When the end came, which was not unexpected, Mr. Allison was surrounded by his children, save two, Leon, who lives in Oklahoma, and Miss Odallee, who is teaching school in a distant part of the state and could not come to be with him in the last moments. It was a fitting close to an eventful life, peaceful, tranquil and quiet, he met the grim tyrant with the stoicism and fearlessness that characterized his life as a soldier and a citizen. Funeral services were conducted at the residence of his son, A. A. Allison, where he died, Sunday morning (Jan. 30, 1910, my insert, all Groesbeck Journals have been released on Thursday of each week) by Rev. J. B. Dodson, pastor of the Methodist Church, after which the Masonic faternity took charge of the remains and after holding it's ante-burial service, accompanied the remains to the depot where they were shipped to Marquez and on Monday interred in the family burial ground by the side of his wife who preceeded him in death some years ago. The deceased was 69 years of age and has lived in this and Leon County practically all his life. He was a young man when the war began and was among the first volunteers to respond, enlisting in Leon County and was attached to Hood's Texas Brigade in which he served throughout the war. He was in many notable engagements, one of which was at Gettysburg and was with Pickett in his charge of the heights and capture of Round Top, a charge made famous by the gallantry displayed by those engaged in it, and which will live as long as history last. When the was closed he returned to his home in Leon County and began the work of rebuilding a dsvastated country and by having aside comptectency for himself and family. He succeeded, and for many years he was considered one of the wealtiest men in the county. Mr. Allison lived many years at Oletha, afterwards locating in Groesbeck and engaging in business from which he retired after a few years and went to Aspermont in Stonewall County. But his health failed and he came back to Groesbeck, sometime ago, making his home with his son and where he lived when death came. He was a goodman, a good citizen and in his death the country has suffered a loss. Follow the Forrest Glade road, aka, old Mexia Hwy, and you will see a sign to turn to the cemetery. If you miss it you will end up back on the 14 in Mexia.
