Hayter Author: Ann A. Noble [] Date: 25 Nov 2000 12:00 PM Surnames: Hayter Classification: Obituary The following is an obituary for W.J. Hayter from the Coolidge Herald, January 1944: FUNERAL SERVIES FOR W.J. HAYTER HELD TUES. AT METHODIST CHURCH This community has been deeply grieved this week due to the passing of one our our best and most highly respected citizens, W.J. Hayter. Mr. Hayter, as far as anyone knows, was a friend to everyone, especially in the time of trouble, his purse was always open to the needs of his less fortunate friends, and he was a supporter of every worthwhile and beneficial community project; he was a consistent and ardent church worker and while he was affiliated with the Methodist Church, his benevolences extended to other denominations. The statement that W.J. Hayter was a good man may sound simple and inadequate at a time like this, but no truer statement was ever made. W.J. Hayter was born in Cedar Island community, 6 miles from where he lived at the time of his death, on September 21, 1858, and most of his well-spent life was lived in this county. Mr. Hayter engaged in farming until his retirement. His wife preceeded him in death in 1901, leaving him with four children, the eldest being only 13, and since that time he had been both a father and mother to his children. In the last years of his life he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. A.W. Brodnax, east of Coolidge, and at whose home his death occurred on Monday morning about 5:30, January 17th. Funderal services were held at the Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon at 3 P.M., conducted by Rev. R.O. Sory, assisted by Rev. R.E. Briggs, Wm. H. James and C.O. Shugart. Interment was in the Mexia cemetery beside his wife and son, Tracy, the latter's death having occurred in 1922. Survivors include three children: Mrs. A.W. Brodnax and Mrs. J.E. McElroy of this city, and Wyatt Hayter of Mexia. Other immediate survivors include his sister, Mrs. S. W. Hancock of this city, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. We have recently discovered,(just getting started in this genealogy thing) that my ancestors and my wifes family both came from Limestone Co., a fact that is quite amazing to us. We have ancestors in cemeteries at Mart, Horn Hill, Cox, Lost Prairie, and Mt. Antioch. Thanks to you we only have one family left to find. They are Isaac Kennedy b.Aug 25, 1826 d. Nov. 20, 1869. We have found only that he is listed on the 1870 mortality schedule in Limestone Co. as "Homicide" and that he was buried in Limestone Co. His wife was Isabella Lourany Hawkins Kennedy b.July 10, 1827, d.Oct. 11, 1885 in Limestone County. We have not foun a cemetery listing for them as yet.
