   Biography Of Elijah Wallace Reeves
And Wife Mary Anna Samuel Scott
   By Tommie Reeves Smith and
Written Notes From Mary Etta Willingham
Elijah Wallace Reeves was born May 18, 1856 in Gwinnett Co. Georgia to
James Marion Reeves and Mary Ann Childers Reeves. He died June 8, 1915
in Billington, Texas and is buried in the Mt. Antioch Cemetery. As the
Cival War began ,the farm of James Marion Reeves was destroyed by
Northern Forces according to the family history of another of his
sons. James Marion did not want to join the war effort primarily
because of the health of his wife. He was forced to join without delay
and hours after his departure his wife died. Elijah Wallace Reeves and
his siblings were nurtured by their fraternal grandparents, Thompson
and Cinderella Reeves during the duration of the war according to
written memories of his grand daughter, Mary Etta Willingham. Elijah
Wallace and his siblings are found again in the home of his father in
Roanoke Alabama in the 1870 census.
Mary Anna Samuel Scott was born to Polly Reeves and Samuel L. Scott.
She had two brothers . Their names were James Emery Winfield Scott and
William Alexander Scott. In 1860 Mary Anna and her brother William
Alexander Scott are found in the home of their maternal grandparents,
Thompson and Cinderella Reeves. James Emery Winfield Scott was found
in the home of the Scott fraternal grand parents. Research has not
disclosed as yet what happened to their parents.
For a time during the Cival War, first cousins, Elijah Wallace Reeves
and Mary Anna Scott were in the home of their mutual grandparents in
Clay Co. Alabama. About 1875 Elijah Wallace and Mary Anna Scott were
married. The 1880 census shows them with Cinderella Reeves in their
home. Thompson Reeves was deceased at that time. After Cinderella
‘s death Elijah Wallace and Mary Anna migrated to Marshall Co.
Alabama near the Arab and old Rice Community area. Six of their
children had been born at this time. In the newly created community
the families lived in camp out situations until the homes could be
built. An epidemic of some type swept through causing many deaths and
claimed the life of twelve year old Fannie Reeves. The Rice Cemetery
began to be formed with those who died at this time.
The eldest child of Elijah Wallace and Mary Anna was named Mary Lee
Ada. She married John Daniel Willingham on February 2, 1896 and
settled in the nearby area known as Oleander, Alabama. In
approximately 1897 Elijah Wallace Reeves began to prepare to move to
Texas. He left his family in the home of Mary Lee Ada and John
Willingham and traveled to Texas to find a place to live.
He arrived in the Mt. Calm and Billington area primarily because some
of his Moore cousins and his brother-in-law William Alexander Scott
had preceded him in Settling there. It seems the family had two
different sites where they lived. According to the memories of Mary
Etta Willingham, .." The Reeves lived some ten or twelve miles from
Mt. Calm, Texas in Hill County and three or four miles from Billington
in Limestone County until their deaths."..end quote.
The eight children of Elijah Wallace and Mary Anna Scott attended
school at Billington and settled there as adults. Most are buried in
   the Mt. Antioch Cemetery.
It has already been established that Mary Lee Ada Reeves married John
Willingham. They bought a farm from a Moore cousin, the parents of Mr.
Bert Moore. Ten children were born to this union. Eight of whom grew
to maturity in the Billington area. The children’s names are:
Mary Etta b. 1897 d. May 12, 1983. She never married. Burial is in Mt.
   Antioch,
William Emory b.1899 buried Kitt Cemetery, Irving Texas,
Lula May b.1901 d. 1902 buried in Old Town Cemetery near Mt. Calm,
Rosie Ellen b. 1903 d. 1985 burial in Mt. Antioch.
Rosie Ansilar b. 1878 married J. Frank Shaffer and remained in the
community. Rosie died at the time of the birth of her third child.
   Burial in Mt. Antioch Cemetery.
Fannie had died in Rice Community in Alabama.
Aria Jane b. 1884 married James Rufus McKee. They settled in the area.
She died in childbirth with her first child. Both she and her husband
   are buried in Mt. Antioch.
Georgia Estrella b. 1886 married J. Frank Shaffer after the death of
her sister. They established their home in Denison , Texas and are
   buried there.
John Clevlin (or Cleveland) Elijah b. 1888 He grew to maturity and was
known as a music teacher in the area. He taught singing primarily it
seems. He died in 1913 and is buried in an unmarked grave in Mt.
   Antioch. He never married.
Martha Pinckney b. 1894 was nicknamed "Mattie" She married Elmer
Massey. She died in 1915 in childbirth with her first child who also
died . Both are buried together in Mt. Antioch .
Thomas Van Buron b. 1896 grew to maturity in Billington. After both of
his parents had died he joined the Navy at what turned out to be
almost the end of World War II. After his discharge he married Tessie
Lee Sue Culpepper in Hopkins Co. and they established their family
there. They were parents of five children. Edna Earl, Annie Jo, Billy
Buron, Tessie Merle and Tommie Sue. Thomas was a farmer. His death
from Leukemia came on February 5, 1970. He is buried in Sulphur
   Springs, Texas.

I am very interested in this wagon train from IL. I am almost sure
that the Joe Ferguson that came with this train is my 3rd Great
Grandfather Joseph Ferguson of Limestone Co. TX. I have worked on this
group of people for sometime now & think they all came to TX together.
I think the church Elder John Parker had in IL. may have been the
factor that ties all these people together.
Samuel Washington Lindley had a bro. Simon Lindley who was a minister
in this same church in Sangamon Co. IL. also Samuel Lindley's
son-in-law Hiram Little was also involved in this church. Simon
Lindley's dau Anna married a Greenwood & Joseph Lindley of Limestone
Co. was a son of Simon Lindley.

Mary Della (Mollie) LITTLE (my Grandmother she lived in Houston Co.

Leeland C. LITTLE (he is listed on some legal papers that was decided
   in the Crockett TX Courts)
Caroline/Carolina Peteretha (She was married to my GGrandfather, after

Grandma Lindley/Lindsay/Lindsey. It was so long ago that I can't

LITTLE, he was born in GA and lived in Butler Co. AL at age of 14. He

   [] Bill Posey -- 1846-1877
     Author: David W. Morgan [] Date: 18 Sep 1998 12:00 PM
Surnames: Posey, Wallace, Berryhill, Barber, Riggs, Smith,
   Robertson, Hopwood
     Classification: Biography
William Andrew Jackson Posey was born 16 June 1846 in Alabama, died as
an outlaw on his 31st birthday in the Creek Nation, Indian Territory.
Bill Posey was the youngest son of Benjamin Posey and his wife Eliza
Berryhill. Benjamin and Eliza were first cousins and members of the
Creek Nation in Georgia. They married in 1824 in Pike County. Their
oldest son, Thomas B, born in 1826, was born in Troup County.
The Creeks were forced out of Georgia and most relocated to Indian
Territory, now Oklahoma. But a few of the Creeks managed to stay in
Alabama, and were given allotments of 320 acres each. Benjamin and
Eliza Posey's land was near present day Fredonia in Chambers County,
according to the 1832 census of the Creeks.
After a serious clash in 1836, most of the Indians were forcibly
removed from Alabama, those that could be caught. Benjamin Posey and
his family managed to hang on in Alabama, either in Tallapoosa or
Talladega counties, until 1846, when Bill Posey was born. The family
was most likely in Nacogdoches County, Texas shortly after his birth,
as the oldest daughter of Benjamin and Eliza Posey, Sarah Ann Posey,
married Silas H. Barber in Nacogdoches County in December of 1846.
The Posey family moved to Limestone County by 1858. Bill Posey married
Elizabeth Wallace July 18, 1865. To this union three sons were born,
Matthew Andrew Posey, born 11 September 1866, Waco, Texas; Albert
Washington Posey, born 7 February 1869, Waco; and Robert A. Posey,
   born 21 June 1871, Waco.
Times were pretty hard during the days of Reconstruction and the era
of the carpetbaggers after the Civil War. For whatever reason, Bill
Posey turned to a life of crime. He was even accused of hanging his
wife's brother, Matthew Alexander Wallace, although he was not brought
to trial. And he always denied the hanging to his sons.
The Posey gang was mostly involved in stealing horses and mules. The
hanging and the stealing took place in 1873 to 1874, when Bill Posey
was convicted of stealing two mules and sentenced to five years in
prison. He entered prison on July 11, 1874 and escaped from Painters
   Camp on March 4, 1876.
The governor of Texas put a bounty on his head of $500 and requested
that he be brought in. A Creek Indian posse finally caught up with him
near Eufaula, Indian Territory. Posey was killed in the shootout that
   occured.
His first wife had died by this time, and his three boys were living
with him in the I.T. along with his second wife, Susan Riggs. Posey
had a son by Susan, Henry A. Posey, born in 1877 near Concharte Town,
I.T. After his death the three oldest boys went to live with Lucy
Hopwood Smith, a relative through the Posey and Berryhill families.
They left after awhile and lived with a Robertson family,
missionaries. The Robertson's daughter, Alice, was elected to the U.S.
House of Representatives in 1920 from Oklahoma, the second woman ever
   elected to Congress.
All four of Bill Posey's sons are on the Final Rolls of Creeks, known
as the Dawes Rolls. They are listed as 1/4 Creek Indian.

     Classification: Biography
Thomas B. Posey, one of Limestone county's early settlers and highly
respected citizens, is a son of Benjamin and Eliza (Barryhill) Posey.
The father was born in Georgia in 1806, and came to Nacogdoches
county, Texas, in 1841. He afterward removed to Limestone county, and
thence to the Indian Territory, where he died in 1883. He was a farmer
and stock-raiser all his life. He settled in what is now Chambers
county, Alabama, when the Indians were still there, and was also an
early pioneer of Texas. The mother of our subject was born in 1807 and
died in 1881. The parents had a family of fourteen children as
   follows: Sarah Ann, born May 10, 1825; Thomas B., September 14, 1826;
Piety Jane, August 13, 1828; Benjamin Bell, December 9, 1829; John
Deach, May 2, 1831; Martha Elmira, October 3, 1832; Narcissa, August
   2, 1832(?); Uriah, February 6, 1836; Nancy Green, August 29, 1837;
Eli, March 20, 1839; Tinsley Elizabeth, January 31, 1841; James
Marion, June 30, 1842; George Washington, September 6, 1844; William
Andrew, June 16, 1846; and Eliza Hulda, October 9, 1849.
Thomas B. Posey, the subject of this notice, was born in Troup county,
Georgia. When young he removed with his parents to Chambers county,
Alabama, and accompanied them to Texas in 1847. In 1855 he came to
Limestone county, and lived successively on the Navasota river,
Cottonwood and Christmas creeks, and finally, in 1869, located on
Hornhill. Mr. Posey purchased 270 acres of land, paying $20 per acre,
and engaged in farming and stock-raising. He afterward added 200 acres
to his original purchase, paying $18 per acre; and later 40 acres
more, for which he paid $1 per acre. The latter is located about three
miles west of his home farm. In 1876 Mr. Posey abandoned the stock
business, afterward divided his land among his children, and since
that time has made his home with them, principally with his youngest
   son.
Our subject was married in Nacogdoches county, this State, October 11,
1849, to Hulda Hughes, who was born June 7, 1822. Mr. and Mrs. Posey
have reared a family of seven children as follows: Benjamin Franklin,
   born August 25, 1850, married Nora J. Burvis December 14, 1871, and
died November 17, 1877; Richard Thomas, born December 15, 1851,
married Beatrice E. Waller September 24, 1874, and is now a prosperous
farmer of Limestone county; William Uriah, born July 24, 1854, died
before marriage; Eliza Elizabeth, born February 6, 1856, died at the
age of eighteen years; James Silas, born December 10, 1858, married
Emily Hannah December 18, 1878, and resides in this county; Walter,
born December 18, 1859, was married October 6, 1881, to Joanna
Gillman, and resides in Limestone county; and John Milton, born
January 1, 1862. Mr. and Mrs. Posey are members of the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church, although the former's parents were members of the
   Methodist Church.
John Milton, the youngest child of Thomas B. and Hulda Posey, resides
on the old homestead, and has the care of his parents. He married
Laura E. Hannah June 21, 1885. He is a prosperous young farmer, owning
500 acres of good black land, most of which is under a fine state of
   cultivation.

I don't know much about this side of my family, but I do have census
records for Limestone County from the 1860's that show the Clendennans
there in Limestone county fairly strong and the 1890 census showing

I believe Eula Bell (Aunt Bell) father was John B. and her mother was
Mary Ella. Her brother may have been George W., they all buried in the

Gilbert Theopolis BROWN, of Mexia, TX in the mid 1920's. He was son of
Telmachus Mortimer BROWN, and his second wife Emma Carrie KILDOW.
Worked in the oil field as lease broker, tool pusher. Reportedly shot
and killed a man. It was noted that the victim was the town bully, and
had threatened Gilbert. Gilbert was known as "Foff, also Baldy, also
Squire." It was reported that the victim had threatened the life of
Foff several times, and on this particular occassion made a motion as
to go for a gun. Foff had one and used it. Unfortunately the victim
was only bluffing. I was told that no charges were filed.

I am hunting something to tell me where David Fort Davis is buried or
if he left a will. He is my gggrandfather. I know he lived in
Limestone, Texas around 1850 and possibly died there sometime maybe
1860-75. I looked in the cemeterry records posed in the wed page for
cemeteries and did not find him. Thanks Frankie davis glenn

Nancy Jane MCINVALE LAWRENCE in buried at Dover Cem (which is listed
in the Limestone Cemetery Records). She was b 27 Mar 1831 - died 6 Mar
1914 according to her tombstone. However, her obituary states "6 Mar
1911." The obit is a newspaper clipping which was written by J. N.
Wolfe. It contains very little family information other than surviving
children. The clipping is unlabled as to newspaper where it was
published or date of publication. She was living with her son B J

have been unable to locate a death certificate at the state level. Her
husband's name "Drury Lawrence" is on her tombstone.

     Author: J. D. Slaughter [] Date: 6 Jan 2001 12:00 PM
Surnames: SLAUGHTER, TULLUS, LILES, WELLS, BARRINGTON
I saw you had a post on Rootsweb in Aug of 1998 about Adams,
Slaughter, and Lee surnames. Have you found more information on the
   Slaughter line?
You mentioned Owen James Adams (1857-1891) married Minerva Slaughter
(1862-about 1882) in Robertson County, TX in 1880.
Then you stated "They had one daughter, Margaret Emma Adams who was
born in 1881 in Limestone Co., TX"
I have found that my gggrandfather, Marion Buck Slaughter, was born
1879 in Robertson, TX, son of James David Slaughter and Emily M.
Tullus. He then married Lida Liles on 6/29/1899 in Limestone, TX.
James David and Emily were married in Trinity, TX in 1872.
Minerva and James David must be related in some way. Brother and
   sister perhaps?
Please forward me any information you may have.
Marion Buck and Lilda Liles had a son, Guy Douglas Slaughter. Guy
married Irene G. Wells and had my grandfather, James Garland
   Slaughter, Sr.
   Thanks,

My great-grandfather, Ernest Elmer House, was born in 1877 in

(supposedly?) the son of Jarrett House and Eron Minerva Alldred,
though I have no information on them. Do any of these names sound
familiar to you? I'm not sure if they're any relation to a John David
House. Perhaps they were cousins? Siblings? Any help would be great.
