[] FIFE, JAMES HUGHY Author: Frank Butcher [] Date: 30 Jan 1999 12:00 PM Surnames: FIFE Classification: Biography Name: James Hughy FIFE Birth Date: 5 Oct 1842 Birth Place: Abbeville District, South Carolina Death Date: 23 Sep 1934 Death Place: Near Mexia, Texas Burial Place: Kirk Cemetery, Limestone County, TX Occupation: farmer Father: Samuel FIFE (1813-) Mother: Mary (1814-) Spouse: Sceletce Jane BERRY Children: Matilda Angeline; Hugh Columbus; Cinderella; Samuel Franklin; Silas; Rena; Tyne; Stephen Thomas; James; Mickey; William Oscar According to information in his application for a Confederate veteran's pension, James Fife enlisted in the CSA Army on April 3, 1862 at Persimon Springs, Mississippi. He served as a private in Company H, 31st Mississippi Infantry, fighting in northern Mississippi and Tennessee. James was captured by Union troops at Baker's Creek (Raymond, Mississippi), and was removed to Camp Morton, Indiana. On February 19, 1865, James was parolled at Camp Morton and forwarded to Point Lookout, Maryland for a prisoner exchange. James (called Jim by his friends) married Sceletce Jane Berry and fathered ten children. All of the children were born in Mississippi, and some of the family came to Texas in 1894 (or 1897) in an ox-drawn wagon, crossing the Mississippi River on a ferry at Vicksburg. The women and small children followed by train. The first stop for the family was Northeast Texas, where Jim opened a general mercantile store in the small town of Petty, Texas. When that store burned, the family moved to Limestone County, living on the Oliver Ranch, where Jim and some of the boys worked. Jim bought 100 acres near Ben Hur, Texas in 1914 that was later sold to his son, Stephen. In 1914 the couple was living in Mexia with Huey and his wife Omaha. All of the ten children stayed in Limestone County and farmed. Tyne later moved to Sudan in West Texas and farmed there. Jim’s application for a veteran's pension in 1913 was rejected "on account of having too much property”. The application indicated that at the age of 70, his annual income was less than $300, and the value of his property (exclusive of homestead) was less than $1000. According to his grandaughter, Ruby Fife, Jim was a little man, kind of round. Ruby remembered that when his grandchildren would ask him to spend the night at their house, James would always beg off, saying "no chillin, when it gets dark I want to be in my own bed." Jim died at the age of 92 at the home of his son, Huey, near Mexia. The attending physician wrote that the cause of death was "senility". [] Stafford-Rhodes Burial Location Author: V. E.
