They were the children of William WOOD by his second wife Elizabeth Spence (May have been more than one prior to Elizabeth). They removed from Pasquotank Co., NC to Weakley Co., TN in 1834 which was the year John Kelly married Ann Elizabeth SAWYER. At least two of John Kelly's older half brothers also made that move. They were Wilson WOOD who as next of kin was made administrator of William WOOD's estate ca 1839, and James S WOOD, my gggrandfather. My ggrandfather, Wilson C WOOD married 2nd Catherine Frances SAWYER, daughter of William Sawyer and Sarah WILBANKS, in Limestone Co. ca 1868. William and Frederick SAWYER came from Pasquotank about the same time as the WOODs and they all settled just south of Dukedom, TN. [] Alverta Martin-Obituary Author: Beth Wilson [] Date: 28 Mar 1999 12:00 PM Surnames: McKenzie Classification: Obituary Our All-wise Heavenly Father saw fit in His great wisdom to send his Death Angel into the home of Brother and Sister R. M. Martin, of Oletha, Texas on the 21st day of April 1921 and carry the sweet spirit of their only daughter, Alverta to her Home prepared on high. Alverta was born December 24, 1904, age 16 years, 3 months, 27 days. Not enough can be said of the lovable and admirable character of Alverta for she always had a smile and word of cheer for every one, and to know her was to love her. Although she had not united with the church, she had trusted her Master and had expressed herself several times that death was no dread to her and that she was going home to be with Jesus. We extend to that bereaved mother, father and brothers our heartfelt sympathy and may the God of all grace and comfort abide with them until that grand and glorious day when all the cares of life are over, and they shall be reunited with Alverta, never to part again. A FRIEND (Alverta Martin is buried in the McKenzie Cemetery.) [] Joseph McKenzie Dead ( 9-1-1922) Author: Beth Wilson [] Date: 28 Mar 1999 12:00 PM Surnames: McKenzie, Baldwin, Thomas, Martin, Roloff, Shields, Goodrich Classification: Obituary Mr. Joseph (Jodie) McKinzie died at his home near Oletha Thursday of last week, and his remains were buried Friday afternoon. McKenzie of Mart, two sisters, Mrs. Ella Baldwin of Waco and Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas of Oletha. He was a member of one of the largest and most prominent families of the county and will be missed by a host of loyal frinds. The (Thornton) Hustler extends sympathy to the bereaved wife and children. [] In Memory of Sister Martha McKenzie Author: Beth Wilson [] Date: 28 Mar 1999 12:00 PM Surnames: Wagerman, Sadler, Bowen, Shields, Martin, Goodrich, Roloff Classification: Obituary In Tribute of respect by the Mt. Joy Baptist church to the memory of Sister Martha McKenzie, who departed this life August 13, 1926. Her husband, Joddie McKenzie, preceded her in death three years past. Sister McKenzie was converted and served with the Mt. Joy Baptist Church something about forty-five years ago. In the death of Sister McKenzie the church has lost one of its most loyal members. She lived a consistent Christian life and to know her was to love her. Her age was 65 years, 3 months and 10 days. It was hard for relatives and friends to give her up, but God knew best and we humbly bow to his will and say thine will be done. We are looking to the resurrection morning when the dead in Christ shall rise to meet her and so shall we ever be with the Lord. She leaves a sister, Mrs. Geo. Bowen, two brothers, Jno. and Bob Wagerman, eight children, Mrs. Nola Shields, Mrs. Laura Martin, Mrs. Abe (Phene) Goodrich, Mrs. Sadie Roloff, Henry, John, Louie, and Callie McKenzie, besides a number of grandchildren and other relatives and fiends to mourn her loss. On Sunday evening her remains were conveyed to the McKenzie Cemetery and there placed in their last resting place to await the pleasure of the Almighty God when she shall be raised, not as she once was, but in the likeness of Him who died and rose again for the dead shall be raised and this corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality. So, when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then that shall be brought to pass the saying that is written death is swallowed up in victory. O grave, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting? The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law, but thanks be to God, Which giveth us the victor through our Lord Jesus Christ. To the many friends who visited the bereaved children in her last hours and all along, they desire to extend their heartfelt thanks and to invoke down on them all the blessings and guidance of the great giver of every good and perfect gift. They also desire the prayers of all of God's children that He may be with them to comfort and strengthen them in this sad hour. Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Brother A.B. Pair. Be it resolved that a copy of this be preserved by the church and one forwarded to the family. MRS. DAISY CALDWELL [] Persons, Richard Author: William R. [] GROOVER, BANKS, RAMSEY Author: Paula Dunklin [] Date: 26 Mar 1999 12:00 PM Surnames: GROOVER, BANKS, RAMSEY Still looking for information on GROOVER, BANKS and RAMSEY families thought to have lived in Limestone County before Freestone County was formed. My great grandmother, Mary Margaret BANKS, b. c.1835-1842 (though some info suggets it was GROOVER not BANKS)married Reuben MANNING abt. 1855, unknown where. Mary Margaret's parents were either..unknown GROOVER mother and unknown BANKS father OR unknown BANKS mother and unknown GROOVER father. I personally think her father was the BANKS. He is thought to have died while Mary Margaret was still living at home and her mother remarried. Reuben and Mary Margaret are buried in Cotton Gin cemetery located between Mexia and Teague. There are several GROOVERs buried there, but their connection to Mary Margaret is unknown. They are: Bernice; Willa E.; William W.; Mary E.; Vannie S.; Zama C.; Mollie P.; F. H.; and an infant. Mary Margaret may have had a step-sister, Mattie, who married Tom RAMSEY. There are two (2) RAMSEY graves in the same location. They are Thomas C. and Owen W. RAMSEY. If anyone can help identify these people and their connection to this family or help with information on the BANKS or GROOVER families, please contact me. All births and deaths occured in the 1800's to early 1900's. He had 2 wives, one being Sarah Elizabeth YANCEY who had previously been married to William Holiday NOBLITT. Since James Porter Norwood would have been 65 when the eleventh child (Lucy Myrtle) was born, and since I find 2 wives for James, I suspect that that some of James's children were borne by Sarah. Can anyone help clear this up which children belong to Sarah and which to Phoebe Ann Wilson? [] JOHN J. [] Lucy Ann Lindsay - Lindsay Farm Author: Ledru Corlett [] Date: 22 Mar 1999 12:00 PM Surnames: Lindsay, Horton, Corlett Looking for information on the Lindsay family. J.H. Lindsay and Lucy Ann (Bell) Lindsay, both from North Carolina, operated a farm or ranch near Groesbeck, Limestone County, Texas. J.H. died October 27, 1906, and his widow Lucy Ann moved to Dallas. Her body was shipped back to Groesbeck for burial after her death, February 12, 1921. I have no idea where either burial actually is, and would be interested in finding them. J.H. and Lucy Ann had at least four children; three of the daughters married into the Horton, Stroud and Torvels(?) families. Frank Corlett, grandson of Emma (Lindsay) Horton, remembered visiting the family farm or ranch around 1900-1905; unfortunately he is no long around to answer questions.
