From THE MONROE CO. WATCHMAN, Vol. 17, Num. 20; Thursday, June 21, 1888:

DIED


On Flat mountain, near Alderson, on the 7th inst., Jonathan Forren, son of
James M. and Elizabeth Forren, aged 16 years and 4 months.

On June 9th, near Green Sulphur, in Summers county, the youngest son of
Thos. G. and Virginia Gwinn, aged 2 years and 3 months.

On June 16th, at his home in Giles county, Va., Anderson Shumate, Esq.,
aged 84 years.

At 10:30 o'clock on Friday morning, June 15, 1888, at his home near Union,
Mr. ADAM B. CROSIER, aged 79 years.  He was a highly respected citizen, and
had been for many years a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church. 
His remains were interred in the cemetery near this place on Sunday last.

Henry Forren, aged 74 years.

Piercy, aged 83 years.

On Jan. 30th, at his home at Newport News, Va., Mr. Martin Boler, formerly
of Lewisburg, W. Va., aged 38 years.

DIED.

 On Jan. 29, 1907, at her home at Alleghany Station, Va., Mrs. K. B.
Howary, aged aboout 67 years.  She was a valuable Christian lady, beloved
by all who knew her.

On Feb. 11, 1907, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. M. Meador, in
Hinton, Mrs. Sarah Richmond, aged about 82 years.

On Feb. 2, 1907, at his home near Lowell, of Bright's disease, Mr. George
Coiner, aged 68 years. 

On Feb. 4, 1907, at her home in Rich Hollow, Greenbrier county, Mrs.
Malinda Rodgers (nee Livesay), aged 87 years.  Interment at Lewisburg.

On Jan. 31, 1907, at her home at Caldwell, of cancer, Mrs. Mollie Crawford,
aged about 35 years, wife of King Crawford.

On Jan. 31, 1907, at his home on Miller's mountain, Greenbrier county, Mr.
Beverly Shepherd, aged about 80 years.

At the home of James Hanna, his nephew, in Williamsburg district,
Greenbrier county, on Feb. 1, 1907, Mr. Ned Hanna, aged over 80 years.

At his home near Blue Sul. Springs, Greenbrier county, on Feb. 1, 1907, Mr.
Caperton Forren, aged about 70 years.

On Feb. 6, 1907, at her home near Rupert, Greenbrier county, Mrs. Jennie
Neal Cook, aged about 80 years.

On Feb. 9, 1907, at her home near Hinton, of typhoid fever, Miss Irene
Dennis, daughter of Mr. R. W. Dennis, aged 20 years.

On Feb. 8, 1907, at her home at Green Sul. Springs, Summers County, of
paralysis, Mrs. Margaret Burdette, aged 57 years, wife of Mr. Giles M.
Burdette.  He and seven children survive her.  Interment in the Gwinn
graveyard.

From THE MONROE WATCHMAN, Vol. 38, Num. 45; Thursday, December 9, 1909:

SAM'L T. FORREN
     We regret to announce the death of Mr. Samuel T. Forren, which occurred 
at his home near Lewisburg, at 9:30 o'clock last Saturday morning, Dec. 4, 
1909, after an illness of three months, of Bright's disease and heart 
failure.  He was a native of Monroe county and lived near Union until 4 
years ago when he moved to Greenbrier County.  Mr. Forren was 56 years of age
 April 11 last.  He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Chruch and a kindly, 
industrious man whose old friends are saddened by his death.  His first wife 
died years ago, leaving one daughter, now Mrs. Fred Porterfield of Cary.  
His second wife was before her marriage Miss Martha Agnes Brown of this county.  
She and 13 children survive him, the latter being Mr. Everett Forren of Union,
 Elmer, Guy, Lonnie, Etta, Glenna, Nellie, Gertrude, Carrie, Marshall, Dollie, 
Evie, and Harry Forren of Greenbrier.  The funeral services were conducted by 
Rev. Dr. M. L. Lacy last Sunday afternoon, and at 3:30 o'clock the remains of 
the deceased were interred in the Smith garveyard near Lewisburg, a large 
congregation being present.

     Mr. and Mrs. Floyd G. Lobban of Alderson, have the sympathy of their 
friends in the loss of their infant child two weeks old.  The little one 
died of erysipelas on Nov. 24, 1909, and was laid in the cemetery at Alderson 
on Thanksgiving Day.

     Rev. Dabney C. T. Davis died at his home in Charleston, W. V., last 
Sunday, Dec. 5, 1909, aged 83 years.  He was born in Albemarle Co., Va., 
where the most of his life was spent in the Episcopal ministery.  The 
deceased came of a distinguished family.  His burial took place yesterday 
at the University of Virginia.  Surviving him are six sons and two daughters, 
among the former Attorney C. T. Davis of Lewisburg.

     Mrs. Elizabeth Hardy died at her home in Hinton on Nov. 25, 1909, at 
an advanced age.  She is survived by three grown sons and one daughter, 
Mrs. Mary Lushbaugh.  Interment at Staunton, Va.

From THE MONROE WATCHMAN, Vol. 37, Num. 30; Thursday, August 20, 1908:

    Mr. James Forren died at the home of his son Isaac, on Flat mountain in 
this county near Alderson on Monday evening last, Aug. 17, 1908, at 6 o'clock,
 of kidney trouble, aged about 74 years.  He is survived by eight children - 
Mrs. Mary Arthur of the Potts Valley, Messrs.  Thos., Harvey, Isaac, Floyd, 
and Robert Forren who reside in this county and Greenbrier between Alderson 
and Fort Spring, and Mrs. Sarah Massey of Pickaway, and Mrs. Laura Ripley 
of Alderson.  Mr. Forren was an estimable citizen.  His remains were interred 
in the family graveyard on Flat mountain last Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, 
burial services being conducted by Rev. Allen.

     Mr. Letcher Copeland died at his home near Wikel, this county, on Monday 
evening last, Aug. 17, 1908, of billions fever.  He was about 45 years of age.  
Mr. Copeland leaves a wife and a large number of children and to his family
and friends his death is a sad bereavement.  His burial took place last Tuesday.

     Luther, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Foster, aged about 1 year, died 
at their home at Talcott on Monday last, Aug. 17, 1908, of cholera infantum.  
The little one was laid to rest in Talcott cemetery last Tuesday.  This is 
the fourth child these parents have lost, and their friends sincerely 
sympathize with them.

     Miss Josephine Ralston, aged about 17 years, died at the residence of 
J. W. Jackson, where she made her home, near Organ Cave, Greenbrier county, 
last Sunday, Aug. 16, 1908, of typhoid fever.

     Mrs. Amanda S. Jeffries died at her home in Ronceverte on Aug. 9, 1908, 
after a long illness, aged nearly 74 years.  She was a daughter of the late 
Abraham Hess and was born near Nickells Mills, Monroe county.  For 20 years 
she had been a resident of Ronceverte.  Mrs. Jeffries was a member of the 
M. E. Church South.  She is survived by three children - Miss Annie E., Mr. 
Frank Jeffries of Ronceverte, and Mr. A. L. Jeffries of Lowmoor, Va.

From THE MONROE WATCHMAN, Vol. 64, Num. 41; Thursday, November 21, 1935:

Mrs. Lillian Blake
     Mrs. Lillian Blake, mother of Mrs. L. P. Peters of Union, died at her 
home in Oak Hill last Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 13, 1935, following a long 
illness.  Mrs. Blake was 57 years of age.  She was a member of the Oak Hill 
Baptist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star and of the Oak Hill Women's Club.
  Besides Mrs. Peters, she is survived by two other daughters, Mrs. Earl Burgess 
of Scarbro, W. Va., and Miss Louise Blake of Oak Hill.  A brother, Mr. D. H. 
Duncan of Toledo, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. A. J. Brown and Mrs. R. W. Hayes, 
both of Oak Hill, are also living.  Funeral services were held from the Oak Hill 
Baptist Church last Friday afternoon and interment was made in the I. O. O. F. 
cemetery in Oak Hill.

J. W. Hoke
     Mr. J. W. Hoke, 72 years old, died of a heart ailment last Wednesday 
morning at 3:20 at his home at Upland, Summers county.  Although he had 
been in ill health for nearly a year, his condition did not become critical 
until about two weeks before his death.  Mr. Hoke was born in Monroe county, 
at Sinks Grove.  Besides his wife, Mrs. Aice Hoke, he is survived by nine 
children, and two brothers, Mr. J. M. Hoke of Hinton, and Mr. "Tobe" Hoke 
of St. Albans.  Final rites were held and burial made at Talcott last 
Thursday afternoon.

Geo. E. Cottle
     Mr. George E. Cottle, aged 54, prominent resident of Forest Hill 
and one of Summers county's best known school teachers, died on Nov. 12, 
1935, at his home after an illness of three monhs of a heart ailment and 
high blood pressure.  Mr. Cottle was a member of Summers county Democratic
Executive Committee, and was superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School 
at Forest Hill.  He is survived by his widow and 14 children.

J. R. Forren
     Mr. James Robert Forren, aged 52, who was born in Monroe county, 
died of paralysis in McKendree Hospital on Nov. 8, 1935.  In 1905, Mr. 
Forren moved to Fayette county, where he married and reared eleven children,
 all of whom survive him.  He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Knights of 
Pythias, Senior Order of the United American Mechanics, and the Methodist 
Church.

     James Morgan, 19 years old, died at his home near Ronceverte on 
Saturday, Nov. 9, 1935, following a long illness.  He was a son of Mr. 
and Mrs. J. C. Morgan, and is survived by his parents, four sisters, and 
two brothers.

From THE MONROE WATCHMAN, Vol. 43, Num. 7; Thursday, March 19, 1914:

     Mr. Samuel C. Forren, Sr., died at his home at Smoot March 8, 1914.  
He was born in Monroe county December 25, 1827, and was 85 years, 2 months 
and 11 days old.  He was the last of a large family of children.  Mr. Forren 
was united in marriage with Miss Nancy Eary (who preceded him to the grave 
some years ago) to this union was born ten children, 7 of whom survive.

     Died - on March 6, 1914, at his home near Bertha, Summers county, 
Mr. L. B. W. Noble, aged 80 years.  He was a good man, a member of the 
Christian Baptist Church, and was twice married.  Six children survive him, 
among them Messrs. Lorenzo of Indian Mills, Joseph Noble of Athens, and 
Mrs. Julia Mann of Monroe county.  Rev. J. W. Dillon conducted the funeral 
and burial services on March 8 near the late home of the deceased.

     Mrs. Sexton, wife of Mr. John Sexton, died at her home near Pence Springs, 
Summers county, on March 9, 1914, of blood poisoning, aged about 35 years.  
Interment in the Calyton cemetery.

     Mr. Harvey Willis Knight died at his home near Renick, Greenbrier county,
 on March 8, 1914 aged about 32 years.  He was a member of the Methodist 
Protestant Church.  Interment at Salem Church, Organ Cave.
