NOAH R. SAGER
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, July 24, 1996

Noah R. Sager, age 80 of Rio, WV passed away on July 17, am 1996 
at the E.A. Hawse Continuous Care Center in Baker, WV.

Mr. Sager was born June 4, 1916 in Perry, WV the son of the late 
John B. and Beulah Smith Sager.

He was a retired farmer and member of the Sperry's Run United 
Methodist Church; and a former member of the North River Fire 
Company and Rio Ruritans.

Surviving are two sons, Ray R. Sager and John D. Sager of Rio; 
one daughter, Reta C. Fansler of Mathias; three brothers, Tommy 
Sager of Bridgewater, VA, Fred Sager and Darlington Sager of Baker.  He was 
preceded 
in death by his wife, Evelyn L. Sager in January of 1991 and two brothers Joe 
Sager and Virgil Sager; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 21 at the Loy Funeral 
Home with the Rev. Nip Crites officiating.  Burial was in the 
Sperry's Run Church Cemetery.  

Pallbearers were Robert Heishman, Ralph Heishman, Oliver 
Heishman, Arlan Swisher, Richard Helmick and Ralph Fitzwater.

Memorial may be made to the Sperry's Run United Methodist Church.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Loy Funeral 
Home of Wardensville.

JAMES E. SAFFEL
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, June 30, 1999

James E. Saffel, age 62 of North Main Street, Moorefield, WV 
passed away Tuesday morning, June 22, 1999 at the Grant 
Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV.  Born February 27, 
1937 in Belington, WV, he was a son of the late Clifford 
B. and Reta Marie (Shahan) Saffel.  Mr. Saffel was a meat 
inspector for the U.S.D.A.  He was preceded in death by 
one brother and one sister.

Surviving is one brother, George W. Saffel of Moorefield, 
WV; two sisters, Gertrude Shahan of Philippi, WV and Ruby 
Wilson of Philadelphia, PA and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, June 25, 1999 
at the Schoonover-Stemple Funeral Chapel in Belington with 
the Rev. Arden Beck officiating.  Burial followed at the 
Barbour Memorial near Belington.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the 
Fraley Funeral Home of Moorefield, WV.

HAZEL CLAIR SAPP
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 28, 1996

Hazel Clair Sapp, 78, of Hundred, died Sunday, August 25, 
1996 in the Veterans Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV.

He was born October 22, 1917 in Endicott, a son of the late 
Hugh and Elizabeth Sole Sapp.

Mr. Sapp was a retired heavy equipment operator and was a 
lifetime member of the International Union of Operating 
Engineers.  He was a veteran of the United States Army who 
served during World War II.  He also was a member of the 
Littleton Church of Christ.  He was a member of the Earl 
Kiger American Legion Post #120-Hundred.  Surviving are his 
wife, Inez Edna Rose Sapp; two daughters, Nancy E. Regester 
Lewis of Moorefield; Glenda J. Haun of Martinsburg; two sisters, 
Laura Kimble of Alliance, Ohio and Mary Morgan of Porters 
Falls, WV; two grandchildren, Angela and Jeremy Regester.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one 
sister, Lulu Knapp.

Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, August 28, in 
the Tennant Funeral Home with the Evangelist Dick Bartrug 
officiating.  Interment will follow in the Mr. Zion Cemetery 
near Hundred.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer 
Society, 503 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont, WV 26554.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Tennant 
Funeral Home in Hundred.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, October 16, 1996
Inez E. Sapp, 78, of Hundred, died Wednesday, October 9, 1996 
in the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

She was born December 8, 1917 near Hundred, a daughter of the 
late Lewis Cleveland and Nancy Anderson Rose.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Littletown Church of 
Christ.  Her husband, Hazel Clair Sapp, died on August 25, 1996.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy E. Regester Lewis, Moorefield, 
WV, Glenda Haun, Martinsburg, WV; two grandchildren, Angela and 
Jeremy Regester.

Also preceding her in death in addition to her parents, and her 
husband, are one sister, Lottie Cosgray and two brothers, 
Kenneth and Lewis Dale Rose.

Funeral services were conducted in the Tennant Funeral Home in 
Hundred on Saturday with the Evangelist Dick Bartrug 
officiating.  Interment was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near 
Knob Fork.

Funeral arrangements were under the Tennant Funeral Home, 
Hundred, WV.

CLETA HISER SAVILLE
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 13, 1997

Cleta Hiser Saville, age 84, of 139 South Elm Street, 
Moorefield, WV, passed away on Monday evening, August 4, 
1997 at the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV.

Born November 5, 1912, in Laneville, WV, she was the 
daughter of the late James Abraham Garfield Hiser and 
Annie Huffman Hiser.  Besides her parents, Mrs. Saville 
was also preceded in death by her husband, Halbert J. 
"Peck" Saville on Jan. 8, 1991, one son, and one brother.

She is survived by one daughter, Maxine Wratchford of 
Moorefield, one grandchild, two great-grandchildren, 
one niece and one nephew.

Mrs. Saville was a member of the Duffey Memorial United 
Methodist Church and the former owner of the Airport Inn, 
which later became the Caledonia Club; she was also a 
member of the Moorefield Women's Club, and the Homemaker's 
Club, and served on the Moorefield Town Council and 
Planning and Zoning Commission.

Funeral services were Thursday, August 7, 1997, at 
11:00 a.m., at the Elmore Funeral Home with Pastor Ted 
Osgood officiating.  Burial was at the Olivet Cemetery 
in Moorefield.

Pallbearers were Bob Wilson, Sam Vetter, Warden Hott, 
George Hott, Russ Newman, Oscar Bean, J. R. Hiser and 
Darwin Simmons.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of donor's 
choice.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the 
Elmore Funeral Home, Moorefield, WV.

JUNIOR BROOK SAVILLE
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, July 7, 1999

Junior Brook Saville, age 76, of Moorefield, WV passed away 
late Sunday night, July 11, 1999 at the residence of his 
daughter.

Mr. Saville was born to Elmore and Fluella Evans Saville on 
August 5, 1922 in Kirby, WV.  He was preceded in death by 
his parents and two brothers.

He had been employed by the Department of Highways and was 
a member of the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren.

Surviving are his companion, Virginia Wilson; one daughter, 
Melinda Pratt; one son, Roger Wilson and two grandchildren, 
all of Moorefield; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held today, Wednesday at the Elmore-
Chambers Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Ours 
officiating.  Burial was at the Asbury Cemetery in 
Bean's Settlement.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the 
Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, January 26, 2000

Maxine Elosser Saville, 81, of Wardensville, WV died on 
Thursday, January 20, 2000 at her daughter's residence in 
Wardensville.

Mrs. Saville was born on July 25, 1918 in Fabius, WV, a 
daughter of the late Roy and Estella Wolfe Elosser.  She 
was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wardensville.

She was married to James B. Saville, who died on May 1, 1976.

She is survived by two sons: James Richard "Dick" Saville of 
Sterling, VA, and Robert D. Saville of Wardensville; one 
daughter, Bonnie Kohne of Wardensville; three brothers, 
Paul Elosser of Fayetteville, NC, Ralph Elosser of Winchester, 
VA, and Glen Elosser of Moorefield, WV; one sister, Betty 
Mathias of Lanham, MD; nine grandchildren and six great-
grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by one daughter, 
Connie Rinard and one sister, Evelyn Elosser.

A funeral service was conducted on Sunday, January 23, 
2000 at the Wardensville United Methodist Church with Rev. 
Jeff Anderson officiating.  Interment was in the Wardensville 
Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Michael Rinard, David Saville, Todd Mumpower, 
Robbie Saville, Isaac Kohne and Charles Oates.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Wardensville United

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 23, 1997
David Lee See, 28, of Mathias, WV, died Thursday, April 27, 
1997, at his home.

Mr. See was born July 3, 1968, at Spencer, WV, and was an 
adopted son of Blaine A. and Nina May See.

He was a member of Jenkins Chapel United Methodist Church at 
Mathias, WV.

Surviving in addition to his parents are four sisters, Lecia 
Stevenson, Timberville, Annabel Lambert, Linville, and Linda 
Bradfield and Lena Phillips, both of Broadway; and a 
grandmother, Gracie May, Mathias, WV.

The Rev. Jonathan Hedrick conducted the funeral Monday at 
Jenkins Chapel United Methodist Church.  Burial was in the 
church cemetery.

Dorothy Fay See, age 71, of Baker, WV, died Thursday, 
August 7, 1997 at Baker, WV.

Born July 10, 1926 at Lost River, WV, she was a daughter 
of the late Joseph and Nellie Wilson Miller.

She was a housewife, a member of the Lost River United 
Methodist Church and was a lifelong resident of West Virginia.

Surviving are her husband, Elmer See, Baker, WV; three 
daughters, Dona MacDonald and Lisa See, both of Alexandria, 
VA and Linda MacDonald of Mathias, WV; two sons, Ronald E. 
See and Donnie See, both of Baker, WV; three sisters, 
Thelma Miller and Beatrice Park, both of Baker, WV, 
Delia Wilkins of Wardensville, 
WV; one brother, Virgis Miller of Lost River WV; and 
four grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted Saturday, August 9, at 
Lost River United Methodist Church with Rev. Jonathan 
Hedrick officiating.  Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, 
Lost River, WV.

Pallbearers were Gary Miller, Cletus Miller, Roger Miller,
Bob Branson, Mike Teets, John Branson and Lynn See.

Grace R. See, age 66 of Berna Road, Akron, OH, passed away 
June 18, 1999 at her residence.  Born February 11, 1933 in 
Moorefield, WV she was a daughter of the late Arthur and 
Bertha (Cook) Cain.  She was preceded in death by one son 
and three brothers.  Mrs. See was a member of the Akron 
Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving is her husband, Vause See; two daughters, Connie 
Jarvis and Cindy Peterson of Akron, OH; one brother, Harold 
Cain of Martinsburg, WV; five sisters, Mildred Shockey, 
Gladys Sherman, Leona Fitzwater and Trixie Baldwin of 
Moorefield, WV; and Thelma Lang of Winchester, VA; two 
grandchildren, Whitney Melton and Corey Peterson.

Funeral services were held June 21, 1999 at the Eckard-
Baldwin Sanctuary Chapel in Akron with the Rev. Kenneth 
L. Brisbee officiating.  Burial was at the Northlawn 
Memorial Gardens in Akron.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, July 7, 1999

Lawrence B. Sherman, age 68, of Lucasville, Ohio and 
formerly of Moorefield, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 
1999 at the Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Mr. Sherman was born to the late Brownley H. and Ethel 
(Southerly) Sherman on September 11, 1930 in Moorefield, WV.

Mr. Sherman served in the US Navy and the US Marines; he 
was a bricklayer, Methodist by faith and a member of the 
Moorefield American Legion.

Surviving are three sisters, Helen Coppe of Moorefield, 
Elizabeth L. Berrett and Martha Lee Hartman, both of 
Petersburg, WV; four brothers, Ronald Sherman of 
Moorefield, Jimmy Sherman of Milam, Allen Sherman of 
Owings Mill, MD and Danny Sherman of Moorefield.

A memorial service was conducted Saturday, July 10, 1999, 
at 10:00 a.m. at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home with the 
Rev. Ted Osgood officiating.  Burial was at the Olivet 
Cemetery in Moorefield with military graveside rites 
accorded by the Moorefield Veterans Honor Guard.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Elmore-
Chambers Funeral Home, Moorefield, WV.

WAYNE ALDEN SHERMAN
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, July 28, 1999

Wayne Alden Sherman, 76 years old, of Christopher Drive, 
Winchester, VA and formerly of Moorefield, WV, passed on, 
early Tuesday morning, July 20, 1999 at the Winchester 
Medical Center.

Born June 9, 1923 in Old Fields, he was the son of the late 
Mose and Lillie (Wilkins) Sherman.  Besides his parents he 
was also preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.

Mr. Sherman served in the US Army during WWII, was a member 
of the Duffey United Methodist Church most of his life and 
now a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in 
Winchester, VA.  He graduated from Moorefield High School, 
received his AB degree in Principalship from WVU.  Mr. 
Sherman was principal at Moorefield Elementary School for 
over fifteen years and retired from the Hardy County 
School System with over 38 years of service.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda (McDonald) Sherman of 
Winchester, VA; two sons, Forrest Alden Sherman and wife 
Linda of Winchester, VA, Rodney Wayne Sherman and wife 
Regina of Martinsburg, WV; one sister, Elsie Hutter of 
Moorefield; one brother, Paul Sherman of Fisher, WV and 
three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Duffey Memorial United 
Methodist Church on Friday with the Rev. Ted Osgood and 
Rev. Paul Song officiating.  Burial followed at the Olivet 
Cemetery in Moorefield.

Memorials may be made to the Duffey Memorial United Methodist 
Church, 100 N. Elm Street, Moorefield, WV 26836.

Pallbearers were Roger Sherman, Teddy Garrett, Douglas 
Vance, Eddie Sherman, David Mathias, Donald Lee McDonald, 
Johnnie McDonald, Scott See, and Steven Smith.  Honorary 
pallbearers were George Hott, Warden Hott, Bill Clark, John 
Daniels, Victor Hardy, Jack Smith, Carlton Saville, John 
Sherman, Sr. and Thomas Wright.

RAY W. SHIPE, JR.
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, July 24, 1996

Ray Welton Shipe, Jr., 44, of Mathias, died at his residence, 
Wednesday, July 17, 1996, of an apparent heart attack.

He was born December 17, 1951 at Harrisonburg, RMH, and was 
the son of the late Raymond W. and Ollie Manning Shipe, Sr.

He was a self-employed painter and farmer.  He graduated from 
Mathias High School in 1969 and was a member of the Mathias 
Church of the Brethren.

On August 22, 1981 he married the former Melanie K. Bashioum 
who survives.  Also surviving are one half-sister, Betty 
Garrett of Manassas, VA; one half-brother, Eugene Hoskins of 
Altamonta Springs, Fla.

A funeral service was conducted by Pastor Harold Barnett 
Thursday at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.  The body 
was cremated after the service.

The family asked that memorial contributions be made to the 
Mathias-Baker Rescue Squad, c/o Ervin Wilkins, Sr., HCR 83 Box 
8, Baker, WV 26801-9510 or the Mathias Church of the Brethren,

RAY W. SHIPE, SR.
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, March 27, 1996

Mr. Ray W. Shipe, Sr. died Monday, March 18, 1996 at his 
home in Mathias, WV.  He had suffered from Alzheimer's 
disease for several years.

He had been cared for at home by his son, Ray W. Shipe, 
Jr. and daughter-in-law, Melanie K. Shipe.

Mr. Shipe was born October 7, 1908 and was the son of the 
late John A. and Mabel Moyers Shipe.

Mr. Shipe attended local schools as well as Dalesville 
Academy near Roanoke, VA and Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, 
WV.

He was a retired farmer and early in life had been a 
schoolteacher.

In February of 1950, he married Ollie Manning Hoskins, 
who preceded him in death August 12, 1975.

Mr. Shipe was a member of the Mathias Church of the 
Brethren.  He was a charter member of the Mathias Ruritan 
Club.

In addition to his son, Mr. Shipe is survived by four 
sisters, Ina Sheets, Nitro, WV, Faye Hare, Baltimore, MD, 
Velda Keller, Lost River, WV, Ollie Mathias, Bergton, VA; 
and one brother, Arnold Shipe, Baltimore, MD; six nieces 
and nephews, Janet, Wayne and Darrell Sheets, Nitro, WV, 
Clint Hare, Baltimore, MD, Gail Lohr and Sherrie Carr, 
Broadway, VA.  He was preceded in death by one brother, 
Boyte Shipe, Washington, DC.

The Revs. Harold Barnett and Eugene Shaver conducted the 
funeral service Thursday at the Mathias Church of the 
Brethren.  Burial was in the Mathias Cemetery beside his 
wife.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Grandle 
Funeral Home in Broadway.

HARRISON MORTON "IKE" SHIPLEY, JR.
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, July 7, 1999

A funeral service for Harrison Morton "Ike" Shipley, 
Jr., 71, of Mathias, WV, was held on Friday at the 
Mountain View Church of the Brethren in Mathias, WV.  
Officiating was the Revs. Landis Dove and Olin Bailey.  
Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Shipley died July 7, 1999 at the Winchester Medical 
Center in Winchester.

He was born April 13, 1928 in Gaither, MD, was a son of 
the late Harrison M. and Martha A. Shipley.

He was an Army Veteran of World War II.  He worked at 
Rocco, Inc. before his retirement.  He was a member of 
Mountain View Church of the Brethren and a member of 
Mathias, V.F.W. Post 7780.

In 1976 he married the former Marlene F. Wilkins, who 
died November 12, 1990.

Surviving are two sons, Jeffery Shipley of Maryland, 
Heath Harrison Shipley of Mathias; one daughter, Allison 
Frances Shipley of Mathias; one stepson, Cameron Richard 
Kline of Mathias; one grandson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to 
Mt. View Cemetery, c/o Zella Wilkins, Route 1, Box 54, 
Mathias, WV 26812.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, September 10, 1997

Maxine Dare Shobe, age 81, of Purgitsville, WV, passed 
away on Tuesday evening, September 2, 1997 at the Memorial 
Hospital in Cumberland, Maryland.

Born January 31, 1916, in Hampshire County, WV, she was the 
daughter of the late Dillon and Luella Grace (Whiteman) 
Leatherman.  Besides her parents she was also preceded in 
death by her husband, John Howard Shobe, one son, and two 
brothers.

Surviving are one daughter, Joanna Hill of Romney, WV; one 
son, Jackson Shobe of Purgitsville; and one very special 
daughter-in-law, Nellie Shobe of Purgitsville who helped 
care for her; one sister, Kathleen Thaxton of Roanoke, VA; 
three brothers, Vestal Leatherman, Carroll Leatherman and 
Randall Leatherman, all of Baltimore, MD; five 
grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Shobe was a member of the White Pine Church of the 
Brethren, and the Purgitsville Homemaker's Club, had been 
employed at the Chert Mountain Orchard and later was a 
housekeeper.

Funeral services were conducted at the Elmore-Chambers 
Funeral Home on Friday with the Rev. Ron Bowyer officiating.  
Burial was at the Elijah-High Cemetery at Purgitsville.

Pallbearers were Bud Kemper, Roger Kessel, Tommy Haggerty, 
Ray Taylor, John Champ, Pete High and Ronnie Simon.

Memorial donations may be made to the Elijah-High Cemetery,

JAMES E. SHORT, SR.
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 4, 1999

James E. Short, Sr., 78, of Fairmont, Watson Community, 
died on Saturday, July 24, 1999 at his home.  He was born 
August 10, 1920 at Camden-on-Gauley, a son of the late Elzie 
Short and Nettie Holbrook Short Postlethwaith.

Mr. Short was a sheet metal worker and worked as a member 
of the Sheet Metal Workers Union.  He retired from Chapman 
Corporation in Washington, Pennsylvania.  He had worked many 
different sheet metal jobs in the state including S. M. 
Kisner in Fairmont.

He graduated from Cowen High School in 1939 and attended 
Fairmont Business College.  He enlisted in the United States 
Marine Corps in July of 1942 and served in the Pacific 
Theater during World War II.  He was discharged in February 
1946 as a Master Technical Sergeant.  He was a life member 
of the Marion County Marine Corps League Det. 638.

He was an active member of the Central Christian Church and 
served as a Deacon.  He was a devoted husband, father and 
grandfather.  He enjoyed being outdoors, gardening and 
growing flowers.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Virginia Kisner 
Short, whom he married on December 6, 1948; one son and 
daughter-in-law, James E., II and Deborah Short; one 
daughter, and son-in-law, Judith R. and Samuel Neff of 
Moorefield; two grandchildren, Jason Register and Amy 
Register of Moorefield; four sisters, Lovis Heal, Verlie 
Rose, Wanda Steblein and Wilda Schultz, all of Lockport, 
New York; one brother, Arlen Short of Lockport, New York; 
one niece, Karen Broeckel and her husband Barry, of St. 
Cloud, Florida.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 
his grandparents who raised him, William Pleasant and

Lucy Florence Simon, age 69, of Ft. Seybert, WV passed 
away at the UVA in Charlottesville, VA on November 17, 1998.

She was born in Kline, WV on September 6, 1929 the daughter 
of the late Clay Albert Mitchell and Myrtle Melinda George.

Mrs. Simon was a homemaker and member of the Bethlehem 
Church of the Brethren.

Surviving besides her husband, Edmund Grant Simon; three 
daughters, Martha Asp, Pittsfield, PA; Cindy Ayers, 
Moorefield, WV and Connie Hedrick of Ft. Seybert, WV; 
four sons, Lee Simon and Bobby Simon of Brandywine, WV; 
Charles Simon, Roy Simon of Ft. Seybert; two sisters, 
Maude Kuykendall of Ft. Seybert, WV and Nellie Hammer 
of Franklin, WV; two brothers, Glenn Mitchell of 
Grottoes, VA and Ray Mitchell of Broadway, VA; eight 
grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two step-
grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by seven 
brothers, Lester, Warnie, George, Roy, Charlie, Willie 
and Melvin and one sister, Mary.

Funeral services were held at the Basagic Funeral Home in 
Franklin, WV with Rev. Lee Ashley officiating with burial 
at the Siple Cemetery, Deer Run, in Franklin, WV.

Donald Ray Simon, age 44, of Moorefield died Thursday morning 
August 22, 1996 at his residence following a short illness.

He was a son of Elizabeth Miller Simon and the late Carl E. 
Simon.  He was a lifelong resident of the Moorefield area and 
was a construction worker.

Surviving in addition to his mother are four sisters, Sandra 
Baker of Moorefield, WV; Susie Myers and Barbara Ours of Old 
Fields, WV and Shirley Woodard of Culpeper, VA; three brothers, 
Ronnie Simon of Purgitsville, WV; Robert Simon of Martinsburg, 
WV and James Simon of Bouboursville, WV.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Aug. 24, 1996 at the 
Fraley Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Owens officiating.  
Burial was in the Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield.

Ivy Elizabeth Simmons, 102, of Mabie, died Saturday evening, 
Nov. 7, 1998 at her home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Simmons was born November 19, 1895 in Randolph County, 
a daughter of the late Lloyd and Mary Louis Poling Zickefoose.

On Dec. 22, 1913, she married Leslie D. Simmons, who preceded 
her in death on August 25, 1973.

Surviving are two sons, Lloyd M. Simmons, Mabie and Maurice 
"Paul" Simmons, Buckhannon; three daughters, Iris Zirkle, 
Mabie, Maida Chewning, Moorefield and Greta Poling, Grafton, 
Ohio; two sisters, Mary Kent and Betty Profit, both of Kents 
Store, VA; 34 grandchildren; 88 great-grandchildren and 49 
great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three sons, L. Donald 
Simmons, Troy D. Simmons and Jacob W. Simmons; three 
brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Simmons attended the Schools of Randolph County and 
was a homemaker.  She attended the Harrison Community 
Church of Mabie.

Nathan Allen Sine, age 64 of Rockville, MD, passed away 
on Tuesday, March 9, 1999 at the Shady Grove Adventist 
Hospital in Rockville, MD.

Born January 31, 1935 he was the son of Ned H. Sine, 
deceased and Jessie Funk Sine.  Also surviving besides 
his mother are two brothers, Ned Sine, Jr. of Ocean City, 
MD and Wendell Sine of Paris, VA and two sisters, Onile 
Trail of Farm City, Illinois and Louise Smith of Bunker 
Hill, WV.  He was preceded in death by one sister, 
Lucille Bucher and two brothers, Paul Sine and Sterling 
Sine.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Darlene Wilkins Smith, age 56, of Wardensville, WV died on 
Monday, January 17, 2000 at her residence.

Mrs. Smith was born on March 25, 1943 in Hardy County, WV, 
a daughter of the late Nathan Wilkins and Delia Miller 
Wilkins of Slanesville, WV.  She worked as a Teller at 
the Capon Valley Bank in Wardensville, WV.  She was a 
member of the New Dale Church of the Brethren in Baker, 
WV.  She was a graduate of Mathias High School in 1961.  
She was a graduate of Potomac State College in 1963 with 
an Associates Degree as a Medical Secretary.

She was married to Alvin E. Smith on May 24, 1970 in Baker, WV.

She is survived by her husband and her mother.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, January 20, 2000 
at the Wardensville United Methodist Church.   Officiating 
was Pastor David Garns.  Interment was at the Greenfield 
Cemetery in Wardensville.

Pallbearers were Leslie Barr, Alan Brill, Alfred Ludwig, 
James Dyer, Gerald Fishel and Ed Music.

Services for Ethel Sager Smith, 85, of Mathias, WV, were 
held Wednesday at Jenkins Chapel United Methodist Church 
in Mathias, WV.  Officiating were Rev.'s Wayne Miller and 
Olin Bailey.  Burial was in the Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith died July 25, 1999 at Life Care Center in New 
Market.

She was born August 6, 1913 in Perry, WV, and was a daughter 
of the late Hosea and Anna Ritenour Sager.

She had worked for Valley Distributors in Winchester, was a 
self-employed poultry person, a member of the Mathias Senior 
Citizens and a member of Jenkins Chapel United Methodist 
Church.

On August 4, 1942 she married Jacob D. Colvin who died 
March 1, 1985.

On September 8, 1990, she married John J. Smith, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jane Elizabeth Yankey 
Smith of Timberville, Deborah Ann Graber of Sarasota, FL; 
two brothers, Otis and Tony Sager, both of Lost River, WV; 
one sister, Judy Miller of Lost River; two grandchildren 
and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Smith was a retired foreman with the Mass Transit
Administration, Baltimore, MD.  He was also a member of the 
Leigh High Rod and Gun Club, Burlington, WV.

Burlington, WV; Brenda Hammrick, Baltimore, MD; two sons, Steven 
T. Smith and wife, Lena, Burlington, WV, Richard W. Smith and 
wife, Susie, Burlington, WV; one brother, George W. Smith, Jr., 
Burlington, WV; four sisters, Esta Nabors, New Creek, WV, Etta 
Canan, Burlington, WV, Martha Hott, Romney, WV, Edna Mays, 
Burlington, WV; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren;

Born April 26, 1903 in Hampshire County, WV, she was the 
daughter of the late Harrison Whitacre and the late Ellen 
Catlett.

Mrs. Smith is preceded in death by her husband Raymond Smith 
in March of 1970 and one daughter.

Surviving are two sons, Charles R. and Alvin D. Smith of 
Moorefield, WV and one sister, Daisy Michael of Keyser, WV 
and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, September 27,

Bruce Macbeth officiating.  Burial followed in the Olivet

Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of Moorefield, a member

She was born October 5, 1909 in Milam, WV, and was the daughter 
of the late Daniel Edward and Mahala Florence Smith Hinkle.

She was retired from the National Fruit Co. in Timberville.  
She was a member of the Damascus Church of the Brethren in 
Criders.

On Nov. 26, 1926 she married David L. Smith, who survives.

Alfred R. Smith of Linville, Leo L. Smith of Rockville, MD, 
Carl W. Smith of Broadway; five daughters, Alma M. Crider of 
Broadway, Irene F. Yankey of Bergton, Bernice J. Combs of 
Taylor, Michigan, Odessa L. See of Bergton, Linda S. Miller 
of Lacey Spring; one sister, Alma Rebecca Mongold of 
Moorefield; 35 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 
14 great-great-grandchildren.

The Revs. Julian Carpenter and C. R. Simmons, Jr. conducted a 
funeral service on Friday at the Damascus Church of the 
Brethren, with burial in the Caplinger Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Rig, 
WV.

brother, Delmar Pratt, Old Fields, WV; three sisters, Edith 
Warner, Elsie Bosley, and Bunnie Hines, all of Moorefield, WV;

Ruth Virginia Sonner, 94, of Triangle, formerly of 
Winchester, died Thursday, August 14, 1997 at The Elder

The funeral was conducted Monday, Aug. 18, at Omps Funeral 
Home in Winchester by the Rev. Michael Grooms and Apostle 
C. L. Young.  Burial was in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Mrs. Sonner was born Sept. 30, 1902, in Inkerman, WV, 
daughter of the late Jacob A. and Francelia Bell Pyle 
Bean.  She was a bookkeeper/teller for 15 years for 
Citizens National Bank of Front Royal.  She was a member 
of Highland Memorial Presbyterian Church and Order of the 
Eastern Star, Chapter 6 of Front Royal where she had been 
a past matron.  She was in the first graduating class of 
Handley High School and the wife of the late Russell 
Taylor Sonner.

Surviving are her daughter, Ann Monroe of Daytona Beach, 
FL; a sister, Odello Rosenberger of Roanoke; three 
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Harold Carlton "Bye" Southerly, age 70 of Chipley Lane, 
Moorefield, WV, passed away early Tuesday morning, January 
18, 2000 at his residence.

Mr. Southerly was born August 26, 1929 in Moorefield, WV, 
the son of the late Joseph and Madeline (Shobe) Southerly.  
He was also preceded in death by one sister and three 
brothers.

"Bye" served in the US Navy during the Korean War, was a 
self-employed plumber and electrician, a member of the 
Moorefield Volunteer Fire Company #46 where he served as 
Fire Chief for several years, a member of the Moorefield 
American Legion, V.F.W. and Hardy County Rod and Gun Club.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth A. (Whetzel) Southerly; 
one son, Michael L. Southerly of Moorefield; three sisters, 
Mary Jo Wratchford of Petersburg, WV, Laura Nell Basye of 
Mathias, WV and Betty Hardy of Frosty Hollow, WV; and 
several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, at the Elmore-
Chambers Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis L. Brown and 
Rev. Laurean R. Smith officiating.  Burial followed at 
the Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield, with full military 
graveside rites accorded by the Moorefield Veterans

WV and Carl "Ting" Sindy of Petersburg, WV; three sisters, 
Frances McDonald of Annapolis, MD, Genevieve Raines of 
Columbus, OH and Hazel Wolfe of Baker, WV; 16 
grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin "Bud" 
Southerly in October 1979, one daughter, two brothers 
and one sister.

Mrs. Southerly was born December 1, 1910, in Moorefield, 
WV.  She was the daughter of the late David and Mary Ellen 
(Riggleman) Mongold.  She was preceded in death by her 
first husband, George Cullers, second husband Ammon 
Simmons and third husband Clarence Southerly, two sons 
Junior Cullers in 1970 and Eugene Cullers in 1975, three 
sisters, seven brothers and one grandchild, Delmas Cullers.

Mrs. Southerly was a housewife and a member of the 
Moorefield Church of the Brethren.

Surviving are one son, Earl Simmons of Front Royal, VA, 
one stepdaughter, Mabel Simmons Zirk of Broadway, VA, 
one sister Emma Hinkle of Harrisonburg, VA and ten 
grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; many great-
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home with the Reverends Mel and 
Lisa Fink officiating.  Burial was at the Olivet Cemetery

Born February 19, 1901 in Peru, WV, she was the daughter 
of the late John and Mary Catherine Burns.  She was also 
preceded in death by her husband John E. Southerly; one 
daughter, Betty Lou; one son, Carl Southerly and two sisters. 
Mrs. Southerly was the last member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Southerly was a homemaker and a member of the Tannery 
Chapel Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Virginia Zirk of Stephens 
City, VA and Elva M. Trent of Goodview, VA; two sons, Wade 
Harvey Southerly of Waynesboro, PA and Neil D. Southerly of 
Kingston, GA; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 
three great-great-grandchildren; and dozens of nieces and 
nephews.

at the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV.  Born 
January 14, 1912 in Beaver, WV, he was a son of the late 
James Nelson and Myrtle (Pendleton) Sparks.  He was a 
member of the Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church and 
a veteran of the US Army 86th Signal Company during WW II 
having served in the Asiatic and Pacific Theaters.

Surviving are his wife, Josephine (Bobo) Sparks; one son, 
James Nelson Sparks, Cape Coral, FL; one daughter, Sue 
Bowers of Oakton, VA; one brother, James Morrison Sparks 
of Princeton, WV; six grandchildren, Stephanie Zimmerman 
of Gaithersburg, MD; James N. Sparks, III of Gainesville, 
VA; Daniel Sparks of Cape Coral, FL; Kelly Brennan of 
Laguna Beach, CA; Douglas Blocker of Washington, D.C. 
and Roderick Blocker of Anaheim, CA; and ten great-
grandchildren.

A former Deputy Commissioner of Commerce for West Virginia, 
Spears was chosen by then Governor Hulett Smith to open the 
first Appalachian Regional Commission office in West Virginia.

Spears was married to former State Senator Jae Spears, an 
18-year member of the West Virginia Legislature.

He directed the 30th Mountain State Forest Festival, one of 
the largest festivals in the Eastern United States.

Following service in state government, Spears became the 
executive director for the Upper Potomac Development Corporation, 
which coordinated the economic development projects for the 
eight counties of the Eastern Panhandle.  When the state 
Regional Planning and Development Councils were put into play, 
Spears was hired by Region 8 as Executive Director.  Under his 
guidance, the Eastern Panhandle was one of the first areas to 
develop sanitary landfills to replace open dumps and to 
establish industrial parks.  During that period, the area 
also saw many water and sewage projects completed.  
Following his retirement as Region 8 Director in 1981, 
he became a consultant for economic development projects.

Spears was a former member of the Lexington, Kentucky Jaycees 
and a former member of Elkins Rotary.  He served as state 
president of the West Virginia Planners Association and served 
on the board of directors for the Mountain State Forest 
Festival since 1968.  He also served as representative to 
the Region 8 Area Aging Agency Council.

As a pilot in the 60th Troop Carrier Group, Spears took 
part in the longest combat flight ever attempted to drop 
paratroopers over enemy territories in World War II.  The 
successful mission to North Africa established the record 
which is still held by the 60th Troop Carrier Group and 
which is memorialized by monument at the Wright-Patterson 
Air Force Museum.  He also participated in the invasion of 
Sicily and Italy.

After flying his combat missions in the Korean Conflict, he was 
appointed Director of Troop Movement Control, and later in the 
Far East Air Force headquarters, Tokyo, Spears conducted daily 
briefings for General Weyland, Commanding General of FEAF, and 
General Mark Clark, Commanding General of the Far East.  For 
his outstanding contribution during the Conflict, he received 
the Bronze Star.  He was also the recipient of the Air Medal 
and many clusters for his service activities.  Spears' last 
assignment was as Commander of all tactical air refueling in 
England, Western Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa.

He served as an ROTC instructor for the University of Kentucky 
and for Davis & Elkins College.

Son of William Roscoe and Emma Lilly Spears, and a native of 
Ceredo, Spears was an outstanding West Virginia High School 
athlete, having been named All-State in football and basketball 
at Ceredo-Kenova High School.

Recruited by Adolph Rupp, he lettered in basketball, football, 
and track at the University of Kentucky and was a heavyweight-
wrestling champion.  A member of the student council at U.K., 
he also helped found the "K" Club for athletes before graduating.

A member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins, he is 
survived by his wife, Jae, and four children: Katherine Cooper, 
Charleston; Marsha Spears-Duncan, Austin, Texas; Lawrence 
Spears, Raleigh, North Carolina; and James Spears, 
Bratislava, Slovakia; eight grandchildren; and four 
brothers.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Eva 
Burks, and a brother, Arthur Spears.

Funeral services will be held today, March 20 at the First 
United Methodist Church of Elkins.

LUCY LEE ST. CLAIR
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, February 23, 2000

Mrs. Lucy Lee St. Clair, age 89 of Memphis TN and formerly of
 Moorefield, WV passed away on February 17, 2000 at the Wesley 
Highland Manor in Memphis, TN.

She was born on April 19, 1910 in Richmond, Virginia, daughter 
of Rev. Nathaniel W. and Lucy McCraw Kuykendall.

She was a schoolteacher with an A.B. degree from Flora MacDonald 
College in English-Social Studies and French and a M.A. Degree 
from Marshall University in Education and Library Science.  She 
taught in Hardy County School for 11 years from 1931-1949 and 
was a teacher librarian in Kanawha County Schools for 20 years 
from 1951-1971 at Horace Mann Junior High School.

Mrs. St. Clair was a member of the National Education 
Association, WV Education Association, WV Classroom Teachers 
Association, Kanawha County Teachers Association, WV School 
Librarians Association, Parent-Teacher Association - Life 
Member, President of the WVSLA from 1967-1969, Delegate to 
WVEA Delegate Assembly from 1968-1969, American Association 
of University Women (AAUW) Vice President, Charleston, WV 
Branch 1967-1969, Branch Board from 1963-1969 and Corresponding 
Secretary, WV Division AAUW from 1963-1965; Kappa Delta Pi 
(Honorary Education) Marshall University; Blue Hills Garden 
Club-Charleston, WV; DAR-South Branch Valley Chapter, WV; 
Charleston, WV Grandparents Club; Charleston Woman's Club; 
Colonial Dames XVII Century-John Jolliffee Chapter, WV; and 
Raleigh Presbyterian Church, Memphis, Tennessee. 

Surviving is her husband John T. St. Clair of Memphis, TN; 
one daughter, Jane S. McGoldrick of Memphis, TN; one son, Dr. 
John T. St. Clair, Jr. of Jonesboro, AR; one brother, Dr. N.W. 
Kuykendall, Jr.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Raleigh Presbyterian Church 
in Memphis, TN.

Memorials may be made to the Hardy County Public Library, 
Moorefield, West Virginia; the Moorefield Presbyterian Church, 
Moorefield, West Virginia or the Raleigh Presbyterian Church 
in Memphis, Tennessee.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Memorial

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 17, 1996

Mary Ellen (Keplinger) Borror Stonestreet, age 77, of 
Petersburg, WV, died Wednesday, April 10, 1996 at the 
Grant Memorial Hospital.

Born February 5, 1919 in Petersburg, WV, she was the daughter 
of the late Loss L. and Lena (Judy) Keplinger.  She was 
preceded in death by her first husband, Rumsey R. Borror, 
October 8, 1953; one son, Junior Wayne Borror, July 1939; 
one daughter, Wanda (Borror) Stump Kesner, July 1993; one 
grandson, Matthew Stump, February 1993; three brothers, John, 
Lester, and Harry Keplinger; and one half-brother, Charles 
William Keplinger.

Mrs. Stonestreet was Methodist by faith, a member of the 
Potomac Highland VFW Post 6454 Auxiliary and a member of 
the American Legion Post 78 Auxiliary.

Surviving are her ex-husband, Charles E. Stonestreet of 
Petersburg, WV; two sons, W. Paul Borror and Rick A. 
Stonestreet, both of Petersburg, WV; four daughters, 
Juanita (Borror) Mullenax, Betty (Borror) Kesner, Alma 
(Borror) Kimble, all of Petersburg, WV and Sandra (Borror) 
Riggleman of Moorefield, WV; one sister, Helen V. Ayers of 
Petersburg, WV; six half-sisters, Gladys Vance of Dorcas, 
WV, Maxine Cordel and Betty Kottmyer, both of York, PA, 
Hannah Sally Davis of Cabins, WV, Vista Flemings of Broadway, 
VA and Norma Maupins of Stuart Draft, VA; two half-brothers, 
Richard W. Keplinger and William "Clint" Keplinger, both of 
Petersburg; WV; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 
one great-great-grandson.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at the 
Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, WV, with Rev. Gary Phillips 
and Rev. Robert J. Klier officiating.  Burial was in the Maple 
Hill Cemetery, Petersburg, WV.

LONNIE B. STRAWDERMAN
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 14, 1999

Lonnie B. Strawderman, age 52 of Misty Terrace, Moorefield, 
WV, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 1999 at his residence.  
Born October 19, 1946 in Moorefield, he was the son of the 
late Ivan H. & Edna (Southerly) Strawderman.  He was a US 
Army Veteran and was a member of the V.F.W. Post 9606 of 
Moorefield.

Surviving are his wife, Vivian (Frye) Strawderman; one son, 
Michael I. Strawderman at home; one daughter, Linnea 
Strawderman of South Carolina; one brother, Ivan 
Strawderman, Jr. of Aberdeen, MD; one sister, Betty L. 
Strawderman of Moorefield and one grandchild.

A cremation memorial service was held on Saturday, 
April 10, 1999 at the Fraley Funeral Home in Moorefield 
with the Rev. Ken Owens officiating.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the 
Fraley Funeral Home.

ORPHIA STRAWDERMAN
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 3, 1996

Orphia Virginia Teets Strawderman, 61, Mathias, WV, died 
March 25, 1996 at the Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Strawderman was born Nov. 11, 1934, in Lost River, WV 
and was the daughter of the late Arthur and Nettie Frances 
Halterman Teets.

She was a member of New Dale Church of the Brethren near Lost 
River and had been employed by the Carper and Carper Dry 
Cleaners in Winchester.

On Jan. 17, 1953, she married Garland E. "Dude" Strawderman, 
who died Dec. 1, 1988.

Survivors include three daughters, Viola Louise Ryan and 
Opal Arbutus Wolford, both of Winchester, and Genevie Ann 
Sager, Mathias; two sisters, Agnus Strawderman and Addie 
Lorenz, both of Mathias; one brother, Delbert Teets, 
Mathias; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The Revs. Ward Halterman and James Runion conducted the 
funeral on Thursday at New Dale Church of the Brethren.  
Burial was in the church cemetery.

The Grandle Funeral Home of Broadway was in charge of 
arrangements.

JESSE JUNIOR STUMP
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, October 8, 1997

J. Junior "J.J." Stump, age 79, of 71 Point Drive, 
Petersburg, WV, died Saturday, October 4, 1997 at Grant 
Memorial Hospital.

Born October 21, 1997 in Petersburg, WV, son of the late 
Edward H. and Sadie (Yokum) Stump.  He was also preceded 
in death by one stepdaughter, Neva (Jenkins) McCoole; one 
step-grandson, Freddie Coffman; one brother, Ray Stump; 
one sister, Eurania Riggleman.

Mr. Stump was a farmer and auctioneer.  He was a member 
of the Grove Street United Methodist Church and Landes 
Ruritan Club.

Surviving is his wife, Elise M. (Sites) Stump.  They 
were united in marriage on December 24, 1943.

Also surviving are one stepson, Bobby J. Jenkins of 
Wardensville, WV; one stepdaughter, Pauline Coffman 
of Wardensville, WV; four sisters, Georgia Whetzel 
and Ruth Runion, both of Petersburg, WV, Iona Rose 
of Morgantown, WV and Mary Lou Bonnette of Geneva, 
Ohio; one brother, Elwood Grant Stump of Glen Gardner, 
NJ; six step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; 
and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was conducted Monday at the Schaeffer 
Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard L. Longbon officiating.  
Burial was in South Branch Memorial Gardens, Petersburg, WV.

Memorials may be made to Landes Ruritans Club or charity 
of choice.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 6, 1997
Homer Eli Sunderlin, 62, of Indian Hollow Road, Winchester 
died Friday at Winchester Medical Center.

A graveside service was held on Monday in Shenandoah 
Memorial Park by the Rev. Gregory R. Kenney.

Mr. Sunderlin was born April 3, 1935, in Wardensville, 
WV, son of the late Alton Eli and Armeeda Evans Sunderlin.  
He had worked in construction and retired from the U.S. 
Army National Guard.  He was a graduate of Handley High 
School and a member of American Legion-Conrad Hoover 
Post 21 and Fraternal Order of Eagles-Aerie 824.

Surviving are a son, Matthew C. Sunderlin of Chesapeake; 
a sister, Ameldia Burke of Midlothian and three brothers, 
Charles Sunderlin and David Sunderlin, both of Winchester 
and Dwight Sunderlin of Richmond.

RAY H. SUTTON
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 23, 1997
Ray H. Sutton, 78, of Sequim, WA, died Monday, Jan. 20, at his 
home.

Born Dec. 3, 1918, in West Virginia, he was the son of the late 
Harry and Myrtle (Elbon) Sutton.  He was also preceded in death 
by his first wife, Betty and second wife, Gail; four brothers, 
Howard, William, George and Elmer; and one sister, Ellen.

Mr. Sutton grew up in the South Branch Valley.  He served in 
the Army Air Force for 23 years, retiring in 1963.  He then 
worked for NASA until retiring in 1977.  He was a member of 
the Reserve Officers of the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving are one brother, Eston L. Sutton of Banning, CA; two 
nephews; and 12 grand and great-grandnieces and nephews.

Drennan and Ford Funeral Home and Crematory, Port Angeles, WA,
