MARY H. FIKE
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, March 13, 1996

Mary H. Fike, age 72, of Fisher, died suddenly at her residence 
on Sunday, March 3, 1996.

Born on April 10, 1923 in Kessel, WV, she was the daughter of 
the late Otto G. Woerner and Cora Kessel.  She was preceded in 
death by one brother.

She was a farmer and lifelong resident of Hardy County, 
West Virginia; a member of the Duffey Memorial United Methodist 
Church in Moorefield, and the Hardy County Farm Bureau.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Arvella Poling of 
Moorefield and Carol A. Moran of Fisher, WV; two sisters, 
Nellie Biller of Lost River, WV and Cora Woerner of Thurmont, 
MD; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, March 7, at the 
Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary 
Stackpole officiating.  Burial was in Olivet Cemetery in 
Moorefield.

Pallbearers were Greg Reel, Robbie Williams, E. Allen Crites, 
Ralph Keller, Raymond Carr, Roger Woerner, Jim Martin and 
Johnny Weese.

Memorials may be made to the Duffey Memorial United Methodist 
Church or to the David Smith family.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Fraley Funeral 
Home in Moorefield.

EMILY REBECCA FISHER
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 28, 1996

Emily Rebecca Fisher, age 93, of Moorefield, WV, passed away 
on August 21, 1996 at the Grant Memorial Hospital in 
Petersburg, WV.

Born October 20, 1903 in Hardy County, WV, she was the 
daughter of the late Clarence C. and Ella Maria (Eberly) 
Fisher.  Besides her parents, Miss Fisher was preceded in 
death by three sisters and two brothers.

Surviving are one sister, Laura C. Rankine of Homestead, 
Fla. and one brother Jacob "Jake" C. Fisher of Moorefield, WV.

Miss Fisher attended Shepherd College, taught school in 
Hardy County for over 20 years and was a member of the 
Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in Moorefield.

Funeral services were conducted at the Elmore-Chambers 
Funeral Home on Saturday with Arthur Moorer officiating.  
Burial was in the Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield.

Pallbearers were John C. Welton, Jr., David Welton, Joe 
Wilkinson, and Allen Davey.  Honorary Pallbearers were 
Richard Kline, Earl Munson, Raymond Wratchford, Floyd 
Shockey, Christopher Arnst, Dr. J.W. Fisher, Thomas Long 
and Larry Mullin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Kingdom Hall of 
Jehovah's Witness c/o 703 Lee Street Apts., Moorefield, 
WV 26836.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the 
Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home.

PAUL R. FITEZ
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, November 18, 1998

Paul R. Fitez, 81, a former resident of Canaan Valley, and 
more recently a resident of Elkins, died at 11:30 a.m., 
Nov. 15, 1998, at Davis Memorial Hospital after a short 
illness.

He was born on Jan. 27, 1917 a son of the late Marshall and 
Millie Fitez of Hagerstown, Maryland.  On Jan. 1, 1943, he 
was married to Pauline Halterman of Moorefield, who survives 
in Elkins.  Also surviving are one son, Paul R. Fitez, Jr., 
and one granddaughter Nancy S. Fitez both of Dayton, Ohio.  
He was preceded in death by one brother, George R. Fitez, of 
Columbus, Ohio in 1986.

Fitez was a 1938 graduate of The Ohio State University.  He 
was Vice-President of Fairchild Industries, Germantown, 
Maryland and a member of the American Management Association, 
National Association of Manufacturers, and the Aerospace 
Industry Association.  He served as President of the 
Mason-Dixon Council Boy Scouts of America, Vice-President 
of the Hagerstown, Maryland, Chamber of Commerce, a 
Director of Goodwill Industries, a Director of the United 
Way of Washington County Maryland and served on the 
Board of Trustees of the Washington County Maryland 
Hospital.  He also served on the State of Maryland 
Governors Economic Development Commission.  He was a 
recipient of the Silver Beaver Award of the Boy Scouts 
of America and was cited in the World Who's Who in 
Finance and Industry and Business Leaders of Maryland.  
He was a lifetime member of St. Johns Lutheran Church 
of Hagerstown, Maryland.

While residing in Canaan Valley, Fitez was a member of 
Canaan Valley Fire Department and was employed by Canaan 
Valley Resorts.

At the request of the deceased, cremation arrangements 
are through Tomblyn Funeral Home, Elkins.  Interment will 
be a graveside ceremony in Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield, 
WV at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made 
to St. John's Lutheran Church, Davis, WV 26260.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the 
Tomblyn Funeral Home.

JAMES WELDON "DIGGER" FITZWATER
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, December 22, 1999

James W. "Digger" Fitzwater, age 67, of Moorefield, WV, 
passed away Friday, December 17, 1999 at the Grant Memorial 
Hospital, Petersburg, WV.

Born September 8, 1932 in Hardy County, West Virginia, he 
was the son of Effie (Earl) Fitzwater, E.A. Hawse Continuous 
Care Center in Baker and the late James Fitzwater.  In 
addition to his father, he is also preceded in death by 
one sister and two brothers.

Mr. Fitzwater served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, 
was a self-employed farmer, a member of the Walnut Grove 
Church of the Brethren and the Moorefield VFW and American 
Legion.

Besides his mother, he is also survived by his wife, Maxine 
(Wilson) F. Fitzwater; two daughters, Amy Cosner and Nancy 
Louise Harman, both of Moorefield; foster children, Janice 
Sites of Beverly, WV, James Michael and Thomas Miller, both 
of Moorefield; one sister, Maxine Wratchford of Moorefield; 
five grandchildren; five foster grandchildren; and two 
great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were conducted on Sunday by the Moorefield 
Veterans Honor Guard.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 20, at the Walnut 
Grove Church of the Brethren with Rev. Randy Ours and Rev. 
Glendon Berg officiating.  Burial was at the Walnut Grove 
Church Cemetery with military graveside rites accorded by 
the Moorefield Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to the Moorefield Volunteer Fire 
Company #46, 114 Kuykendall Lane, Moorefield, WV 26836.

Pallbearers were Rick Cullers, Chad Fitzwater, Dave Fitzwater, 
Mike Wilson, Tim Cullers, and William Long.  Honorary 
pallbearers were Danny Eye, Peyton Umstat, Grover See, 
Wayne Shockey, Russell Wratchford and Dr. Larry Rogers.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Elmore-
Chambers Funeral Home, Moorefield, WV.

MELVIN A. FITZWATER
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 10, 1996

The funeral service for Melvin Alston Fitzwater, 79, of 
Mathias, was held Thursday at the Mathias Church of the 
Brethren.  Officiating was the Rev. Harold Barnett.  
Burial was in Mathias.

Mr. Fitzwater died Monday, April 1, 1996 at the UVA 
Hospital in Charlottesville.

He was born February 10, 1917 in Hardy County, WV, and 
was the son of the late Casper and Mary Strawderman 
Fitzwater.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII.  He was 
a member of the Mathias Church of the Brethren and Lost 
River V.F.W. #7780.  He had worked as a Welder's Helper 
with Carl Smith's Pipeline Construction and was a farmer.

On January 22, 1950 he married the former Audrey Wilkins 
who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Vera Fitzwater Shockey 
of Old Fields, WV; one son, Albert W. Fitzwater of Mathias; 
one sister, Lefa Delawder of Broadway; two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mathias-Baker 
Rescue Squad.

NELSON RAY FLEMING
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 3, 1996

Nelson Ray Fleming, 41, of Burlington, died March 30, 
1996 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, MD.  He had 
been in failing health for several months.

He was born October 4, 1954 in Harrisonburg and was the son 
of Violet Lantz Fleming of Broadway and the late Clarence 
Fleming, Jr.

He had worked for Truck Enterprises Inc. since 1977 and moved 
to Burlington, WV and lived there for the last seven years.  
He was a member of the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren 
and was a member of the Broadway Fire Dept.

On December 27, 1976 he married the former Lana Ellen Dove 
who survives.  Also surviving are one daughter, Kimberly 
Fleming of Burlington; two brothers, Pete Fleming of Broadway 
and Kenny Fleming of Timberville.

A funeral service was conducted Tuesday at the Linville 
Creek Church of the Brethren in Broadway, VA by the Revs. 
Paul Roth and Bob Sutherland.  Burial was in the Linville 
Creek Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Grandle 
Funeral Home.

BOBBY G. FLINN
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, March 20, 1996

Bobby Gene Flinn, 61, of 220 N. 11th St., Oakland, died Tuesday, 
March 12, 1996 at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.

Born Feb. 19, 1935, in Belleville, WV he was a son of the late 
James O. Flinn and Anna Marie (Tommey) Flinn.

Mr. Flinn was employed for 27 years by the H-P Stores as a 
manager and buyer.  Following that he owned and operated Flinn's 
Family Store in Petersburg, WV from 1982 until the present, and 
Flinn's Family Store in Oakland from 1990 until the present.

He was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 
served on its administrative board and was a member of the 
United Methodist Men.

He was a Master Mason in Moorefield Lodge 29, A.F. & A.M.  
He was a member of the Cumberland Consistory Scottish Rite 
and the Ali Ghan Temple.  He was also a member of the Greater 
Oakland Business Association and the Petersburg Chamber of 
Commerce.

Surviving are his wife, Marianne (Deahl) Flinn; two sons, Bobby 
Gene Flinn II, Oakland, and Michael Bradley Flinn, Glen Burnie; 
one daughter, Melody Ann Zimmerman, Frederick; two sisters, 
Ruth Arbogast and Wanda Friddle, both of Petersburg; and three 
grandchildren.

Services were conducted at St. Paul's United Methodist Church 
on Friday with the Rev. Doyle Payne officiating.  Interment 
was in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the National 
Multiple Sclerosis Society, Maryland Chapter, 1055 Taylor Ave., 
Suite 201, Towson, MD 21286 or St. Paul's United Methodist Church 
Memorial Fund or the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad.

FREDA KATHERINE FOLEY
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, November 10, 1999

Ms. Freda Katherine Foley, age 86 of Green Spring, WV passed 
away on Monday, November 1, 1999 at the Long Term Care Unit 
of the Hampshire Memorial Hospital in Romney, WV.

She was born on July 9, 1913 the daughter of the late Roy E. 
and Gertrude S. (Kessel) VanFleet.

Mrs. Foley was preceded in death besides her parents, also 
by her husband, William L. Foley, Sr., who died in August of 
1953.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Green Spring United 
Methodist Church in Green Spring, WV.

Surviving is one son, William L. Foley, Jr., Green Spring, 
WV; two daughters, Joyce P. Racey of Romney, WV and Linda S. 
Saville, Paw Paw, WV; eight grandchildren and several great-
grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on November 4, at 1:00 p.m. at the 
Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney, WV with Rev. Wilbur Smith and 
Rev. Deborah Streve officiating with burial in the Forest 
Glen Cemetery in Green Spring, WV.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Shaffer 
Funeral Home in Romney, WV.

FRANCES FRYE
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, March 17, 1999

Mary Frances Frye, age 73, of Wardensville, WV, died 
Monday, March 8, 1999 at the University of Charlottesville, 
VA.

Mrs. Frye was born on September 8, 1925 in Greenville, SC.  
A daughter of the late William Sr. and Clara Phillips 
Schwiers.  She was a retired schoolteacher for Wardensville 
High School and East Hardy High School.  She taught history, 
Driver's Education, and was a cheerleading sponsor.  She 
graduated from Greenville High School in 1942 and Furman 
College, both located in Greenville.  She was also a 
member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Wardensville.

She was married to James Edward Frye on August 23, 1947 in 
Greenville.  Mr. Frye passed away on July 19, 1995.

Surviving are three sons: James E. Frye, Jr. and Joshua S. 
Frye, both of Wardensville, Joe Bill Frye of Morristown, 
TN, and six grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by 
one son: F. Henry Frye and one brother: William Schwiers, 
Jr.

A funeral service was conducted Friday, March 12, 1999, at 
the St. Peter's Lutheran Church.  Officiating was Pastor 
Richard Moll.  Interment was at the Wardensville Cemetery 
in Wardensville, WV.

Pallbearers were Jessie Levenson, Steve Southerland, 
James Tharp, Raymond Snapp, John Ray Rudy, and Charles 
Funkhouser.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Frances Frye 
Memorial Fund, c/o St. Peter's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 
87, Wardensville, WV 26851.

THURMAN A. FULTZ
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, March 31, 1999

Thurman A. Fultz, age 77 of Moorefield, WV passed away 
Tuesday morning, March 16, 1999 at the Hampshire Memorial 
Hospital in Romney, WV.  Born April 13, 1921 in Hardy Co., 
WV he was a son of the late Gus & Annie B. (Weatherholtz) 
Fultz.  He was a veteran of the US Army of World War II, 
and was a member of the American Legion Post #64.  He was 
preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte (Johnson) Fultz 
in April 1969, one infant daughter, four brothers and one 
sister.

Surviving are five sons, James Fultz of Rig, WV, Larry 
Fultz of Milford, DE, Ralph Fultz and Leon A. Fultz of 
Mt. Storm, WV and Dennis Fultz of Romney, WV; four 
daughters, Diane Lewis of Moorefield, WV, Linda Osmond 
of Crestview, FL, Rose Garrison of Romney, WV and Ila 
Milfred of Huntington, WV; one brother, Lloyd Fultz of 
Baltimore, MD; one sister, Violet Malcolm of Moorefield, 
WV; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 21, 1999 
at the Fraley Funeral Home in Moorefield with the Rev. 
Otis "Buzz" Weatherholt officiating.   Burial followed 
at the Fultz Cemetery at Kessel, WV where military 
graveside rites were accorded by the Moorefield Combined 
Honor Guard.

Pallbearers were Adam Fultz, Mike Garrison, Robbie Class, 
Andy Flanagan, Matt Mullins and Jack Kimble.  Honorary 
pallbearers were J.W. May, John M. Garrison, Timmy Lewis, 
B. Kimble and Josh Garrison.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the 
Fraley Funeral Home.

ALICE CATHERINE MYERS FUNK
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 6, 1997

Alice Catherine Myers Funk age 77, of Walnut Towers, 
Hagerstown, MD, died Monday, July 28, 1997, at Washington 
County Hospital, Hagerstown, MD.

She was born May 9, 1920 in Hardy County, WV, to the late 
William W. and Iddie Virginia Bradford Myers.

Her husband, Charles E. Funk, preceded her in death in 
1988.

She was employed as a Nursing Assistant for Avalon Manor 
and Williamsport Nursing Home.

Mrs. Funk was a member of Assemblies of God Church, Salem 
Avenue, Hagerstown, 
MD.

Surviving are six daughters, Elizabeth V. Helmick and 
Mary L. Gladden, and Millie B. Wassen, all of Hagerstown, 
MD, Susie M. Rhodes of Fair Play, MD, Virginia Funk of 
Moorefield, WV, and Ruth M. Hammond of Downsville, MD; 
seven sons, William A. Funk, Lester E. Funk, Fred J. 
Funk, David W. Funk, all of Hagerstown, MD, Charles S. 
Funk of Clear Spring, MD, Harry J. Funk of Keedysville, 
MD, and Edward L. W. Funk of Sharpsburg, MD; two sisters, 
Viola Helmick of Cumberland, MD and Flossie Lloyd of 
Moorefield, WV; one brother, William Myers of Ettrick, 
VA; 24 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one sister Bessie Reel, five 
brothers, Robert Myers, Glenn Myers, Edgar Myers, Alvin 
Myers and Delbert Myers, and one granddaughter, Misty J. 
Funk.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 30, 1997 
at Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport, MD, with Rev. 
Donald E. Wilson officiating.  Interment was in Greenlawn 
Memorial Park, Williamsport, MD.

Memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Assn., 
P.O. Box 3562, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the 
Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport, MD.

LAURA D. FUNK
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 6, 1997
Laura Dale Funk, 72, of Wardensville, WV, died Sunday, 
July 27, 1997 at her home.

The funeral was conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Loy 
Funeral Home in Wardensville, WV, by the Rev. R. Don Prang.  
Burial was in the Greenfield Cemetery in Wardensville.

Mrs. Funk was born August 10, 1924, in McCauley, WV, a 
daughter of the late James Franklin and Amanda Miller 
Funk.  She retired as a cook at the White Star Restaurant 
in Wardensville and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church 
in Arkansas.

Surviving are one son, Shelton Funk of Strasburg; one 
daughter, Sandra Bean of Winchester; and a brother, 
James R. Funk of Martinsburg, WV.

Pallbearers were Anthony Orndorff, Sterling Wilson, 
Ray Hansrote, Ray Combs, Donald McDonald and Sam Bean.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wardensville

LEWIS F. FUNK
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 10, 1996

Lewis F. Funk, age 77, of Baker, WV, died Friday, April 5, 
1996 at the Hampshire Health Care Center, Romney, WV.

Born June 26, 1918 in Thorn Bottom, WV, he was the son of 
the late Obid and Susan Sager Funk.

Mr. Funk was a retired farmer and timberman and was a member 
of the Rock Oak Church of the Brethren.

He married Savilla Heishman Funk Sept. 11, 1945.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Richard Funk 
of Highview, WV, Daniel Funk of Woodstock; four daughters, 
Beatrice Funk, Edinburg, VA, Blanche Sager, Lost River, WV, 
Maxine Helmick, Rio, WV and Virginia Butler, Lehigh Acres, 
FL; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted at the Rock Oak Church of 
the Brethren Monday with the Rev. Woodrow Brown officiating.  
Burial was in Rock Oak Cemetery, Wardensville, WV.

Pallbearers were Charles Rudy, Bobby Rudy, David Seldon, 
Lawrence Jenkins, Larry Jenkins, and Cecil Haycock.

Memorials may be made to the Mathias Baker Rescue Squad, 
c/o Ervin Wilkins, HC 83, Box 8, Baker, WV 26801.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Loy 
Funeral Home, Wardensville, WV.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 28, 1996

Violet Sine Funkhouser, age 65 of Baker, WV, passed away 
on August 21 at the Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.

Born October 10, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Walter 
James and Cebie Jenkins Sine.

She was retired from the Avtex Fibers of Front Royal, VA and 
was a member of the Baker United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Sine is survived by her husband, Kenneth A. Funkhouser; 
one son, Kenneth L. Funkhouser of Baker; two daughters, Janice 
Noel Pratt of Moorefield and Tammy Jo Wilson of Baker, WV; two 
sisters, Bessie Miller of Wardensville, WV and Dorothy Link 
of Winchester, VA; two brothers, Donald Sine and David Sine, 
both of Wardensville, WV; seven grandchildren and 2 great-
grandchildren; three step-grandchildren.  She was preceded 
in death by one brother and one sister.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 24 at the 
Baker United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nip Crites 
officiating with burial in the Pine Grove Cemetery at Baker, 
WV.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Miller, Denzil Wilkins, Jimmy Wilkins, 
Murphy Pratt, III, Brian Ward and Doug Wilson.  Honorary 
Pallbearers were Roger Champ, Roland Combs, Gary Funk, 
Danny Strawderman, Brodell Wilson and Lester Funkhouser, Jr.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Loy 
Funeral Home of Wardensville, WV.
