RUBY V. CAMPBELL
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, March 13, 1996

Ruby Violet Campbell, 81, Penn Laird, died March 5, 1996 at 
her home.  She had not been well for six years and had been 
seriously ill for the past year.

Mrs. Campbell was born Aug. 14, 1914, in Mathias, WV, a 
daughter of the late Adam and Eliza Whetzel Thomas.  She 
attended school in Mathias, moving to Rockingham County at 
an early age.  She lived in Penn Laird for the past 31 years, 
was employed by Bowman Bag Co. before retiring and was a 
member of Mt. Pleasant Church of the Brethren.

On Feb. 8, 1930, she married Lurty D. Campbell, Sr., who died 
April 16, 1990.

Survivors include four sons: Everett W., Donnie L., A. Ray and 
Lurty D. Campbell, Jr., Mount Crawford; three daughters: 
Geneva Lambert and Doris Washington, Mount Crawford, and 
Beatrice Heerman, Penn Laird; a sister, Velma Simmers, 
Timberville; 24 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 
a great-great-grandchild.

The Rev. Richard Hall conducted the funeral on Friday at Mt. 
Pleasant Church of the Brethren with burial in the church 
cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of 
Mt. Pleasant Church of the Brethren or the Alzheimer's 
Association.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, October 2, 1996

Jerod V. Carr, age 21, of Rig, WV passed away Saturday 
morning, September 28, 1996 as a result of injuries 
sustained in a motor vehicle accident.  He was born on 
April 25, 1975 in Harrisonburg, VA, son of C. Victor and 
Damie (Wratchford) Carr of Rig, WV.

Survivors include his parents, Paternal Grandparents, 
Donald and Alice Carr, Rig, WV; one brother, Steven Carr 
of Ada, OH and one sister, Heather Keplinger, Rig, WV.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday, September 30, 
1996 at the Fraley Funeral Home in Moorefield, WV with Rev. 
Laurean R. Smith officiating.  Burial was in the Newhouse 
Cemetery at Rig, WV.

Pallbearers were Miles Park, Rick Crites, Jeff Wilson, 
Chuck Ours, Shawn Carr, Brett Carr, Tony Dolan and Kelly 
Heishman.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Fraley 
Funeral Home.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, November 18, 1998

David P. Casto, age 87, of Petersburg, WV died Thursday, 
Nov. 12, 1998 at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV.

Born June 20, 1911 in Clarksburg, WV, he is the son of the 
late Albert Annias Casto and Elizabeth Virginia (Metheny) Casto.

Twice married and preceded in death by Eltie Catherine 
(Shockey) Casto in November 22, 1975 and Mernie (Ayers) 
Casto October 5, 1989.
 
Mr. Casto was a press operator for Ray Gold in Moorefield for 
several years.

Surviving: one son, David Junior Casto of Petersburg, WV; 
stepson, Marlin Kesner of Petersburg, WV; four stepdaughters, 
Carole Breen of Petersburg, WV; Mary Lee Ours of Moorefield, 
WV; Betty Silgero of Broadway, VA and Anna Mae Grimes of 
Leesburg, VA; one brother, Robert Casto of California; three 
sisters, Maggie Belle Bible of Oneo, WV, Madeline M. Greg of 
Wolfe Summit, WV and Mary Evelyn White of Butler, PA; nine 
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, twin brother Doc 
James Casto, Bernard Casto, Raymond Casto, Clarence Casto 
and two sisters, Lillie Mayfield and Beatrice Castor.

Funeral services were held on Sunday at the Schaeffer Funeral 
Home with Rev. Ernest Pennington and Rev. Craig Howard 
officiating.  Interment was in the Olivet Cemetery at 
Moorefield, WV.

Memorials may be made to the family c/o Carole Breen HC32, 
Box 117, Petersburg, WV 26847.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the 
Schaeffer Funeral Home.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 3, 1996

Dorothy Virginia Chambers, 76, of Mars, PA, and formerly of 
Lost River, WV and Cameron, WV, died March 25, 1996 in Mars, PA.

She was born February 29, 1920 in Aleppo, PA and was the 
daughter of the late Frank and Alice Conrad Shipman.

She was the former owner of "Flip & Dots' Tavern" in Lost 
River.  She was a member of the Aleppo Brethren Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Chambers, 
who died in March 20, 1969.

Surviving are one son, Floyd David Chambers of Mars, PA; two 
daughters, Imogene Chambers of Cameron, WV, Bonnie Finch of 
Graysville, PA; 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; 
close friend, Charles Breeding of Lost River, WV.

The Rev. David Burrough conducted a funeral service on 
Thursday in the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.  Burial 
was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Lost River.

In lieu of flower memorial contributions can be made to the 
Visiting Nurses Association, 154 Hindman Rd., Butler, PA.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Grandle 
Funeral Home.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, November 18, 1998

Timothy Dean Chapell, age 34, of Mathias, WV, died Wednesday, 
November 11, 1998, as a result of an automobile accident.

Born June 13, 1964 in Batavia, NY, he was the son of Jeanne 
Terry Chapell of Batavia, NY and the late Clifford Chapell.

He was a cabinetmaker for Christopher Peacock Cabinets in 
Wardensville, WV.

Surviving besides his mother, are his fiance, Christena 
Ann Mowery; three daughters, Joanne Elizabeth Chapell of 
Culpeper, VA, Samantha Marie Chapell and Megan Renee 
Chapell, both at home; one son, Clifford Dean Chapell of 
Culpeper, VA; four brothers, Gerald Chapell of Byron, NY, 
Jeffrey J. Chapell of Springfield, MA, Richard M. Chapell 
of Ringgold, VA and Robert T. Chapell of Clermont, GA; 
three sisters, Linda Scafetta and Brenda Chapell, both of 
Byron, NY and Patricia Miller of Ethland, VA.

Funeral services were conducted Friday evening, Nov. 13 in 
the McKee Funeral Home Chapel in Baker, WV with Pastor 
Robert Jeffreys officiating.  Burial was in Byron Cemetery, 
Byron, NY.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the McKee 
Funeral Home, Baker, WV.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, March 24, 1999
 
Susan H. Chester, age 83 of Petersburg, WV, passed away on 
March 19, 1999 at the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, 
WV.

Born in Petersburg, WV she was the daughter of Raymond Hill 
and Capitola Baker Chester (deceased).

Surviving is one daughter, Ann C. Day, Summerland Key, FL 
33042; three sisters, Catherine Hill, Grant County Nursing 
Home, Petersburg, WV; Jean Combs, Moorefield, WV, (Mrs. 
Charles "Lefty" Combs), Jo Anne Mowery, Upper Tract, WV; 
two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert James 
and Keith Ray Hill.

She was a bookkeeper and clerk of Southern States 
Cooperative of Petersburg and member of Rebeckha's 
Homemaker's Club, Methodist Women and Choir, Am. Legion 
Auxiliary and a charter member of the Burlington Children's 
Home Auxiliary.

Funeral services were held at the Basagic Funeral Home in 
Petersburg with the Rev. John Williams officiating.  
Burial was in the South Branch Memorial Gardens, 
Petersburg, WV.

Memorials may be made to the Main Street United Methodist 
Church or the Grant County Nursing Home.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the 
Basagic Funeral Home of Petersburg, WV.

JULIAN B. CHIPLEY, JR.
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, May 15, 1996

Julian Baker "Woogs" Chipley, Jr., age 77, of Moorefield, WV, 
passed away on May 9, 1996, at the Winchester Rehabilitation 
Center in Winchester, VA.

Born February 1, 1919, in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the 
late Julian B. Chipley, Sr. and the late Emma Cunningham Chipley.

Surviving are his wife, Elsie Halterman Chipley of Moorefield; 
one daughter, Carolyn Barr of Wardensville, WV; one son, Michael 
Chipley of Petersburg, WV; five grandchildren; and two great-
grandchildren.

Mr. Chipley served in World War II with the Cee Bees, retired 
as a US Postal Clerk, was employed at Hawse Moorefield Foodland 
for nearly 20 years, was a member of the Moorefield Presbyterian 
Church where he was a Deacon, and a member of the Moorefield 
American Legion.

A memorial service was held at the Moorefield Presbyterian 
Church on Saturday morning, with the Pastor Bruce A. Macbeth 
officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Moorefield Presbyterian 
Church or the Hardy County Public Library.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Elmore-
Chambers Funeral Home in Moorefield.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, May 1, 1996

Loretta Frances Kline Lyons Clark, age 59, of Medley, WV, 
died at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA, Thursday, 
April 25, 1996.

She was born November 19, 1936 in Hagerstown, MD and was a 
daughter of Jennings Kline and Lucy Mackley Kline.  She was 
preceded in death by her first husband, Edward Lyons in 1970 
and her second husband, William Clark in 1976.  She was also 
preceded in death by one daughter and one brother.

She attended the Lighthouse Community Church in Maysville, WV 
and was a homemaker.

Surviving are three daughters, Charlotte Mongold of Mathias, 
WV, Leotie Heavener of Maysville, WV, Loretta Mills of Baker, 
WV; one son, Edward Lyons, Jr. of Medley, WV; two brothers, 
John Kline and Ronald Kline; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 28, at the 
Lighthouse Community Church in Maysville with the Rev. 
Joseph Eversole officiating.  Burial was in Lahmansville.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Basagic 
Funeral Home, Petersburg, WV.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, September 10, 1997

Martha Ellen Collins, 100, of Hampshire Health Care Center, 
Romney, WV, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 1997, in Hampshire 
Memorial Hospital, Romney.

Mrs. Collins was born Aug. 25, 1897, in Kirby, WV, the 
daughter of Robert James and Melissa A. Bucklew Loy.  She 
was a member of Union Primitive Baptist Church, Three 
Churches, WV.

She married Barton Albert Collins on Oct. 2, 1959, in 
Cumberland, MD.  Mr. Collins died in 1971.

Surviving are a stepson, Thurston Collins; and a 
stepdaughter, Rosa Wolford of Winchester.

A funeral was held on Friday at the McKee Funeral Home, 
Augusta, WV with the Rev. Harley Baldwin officiating.  
Burial was in the Zion Cemetery, Augusta.

Pallbearers were Robert A. Smith, Gary Loy, Afton Malick, 
Adrian Malick, Edward Alkire, Clarence Smith and Preston 
Saville.

Memorials may be made to the Martha E. Collins Memorial

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 21, 1996

Charles J. "Lefty" Combs, age 69, of Moorefield, died Wednesday 
morning at the V.A. Medical Center of Washington, D.C. 
following a long illness.  He was born March 16, 1927 in 
Hardy County, a son of the late Charles and Bessie "Burch" 
Combs.

He was a retired brick mason, a member of the Moorefield 
Lodge #29 AF & AM, life member of the John M. Golliday 
Post #64, American Legion and a member of Baker's Chapel 
Methodist Church.  Two sisters preceded him in death.

Surviving are: his wife, Anna J. Hill Combs, one son, John 
Combs of Moorefield; one brother, Marshall Combs, Petersburg, 
WV; two grandsons.

The body was cremated.  Memorial services will be conducted 
at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 21, 1996 at the Fraley Funeral 
Home in Moorefield with the Rev. Ron Bowyer officiating.

Memorials may be directed to the Baker's Chapel Methodist 
Church, Moorefield Lodge #29 Building Fund.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Fraley Funeral 
Home.

Courtney Combs, age 79, of Moorefield, WV, passed away early 
Wednesday morning, August 11, 1999, at his residence.

Born December 16, 1919 in Needmore, WV, he was the son of the 
late Daniel W. and Sarah (Teets) Combs.  He was also preceded 
in death by one brother and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Combs was a retired truck driver for WLR Foods Hatchery 
with over 17 years of service, a member of the Walnut Grove 
Church of the Brethren and the Moorefield Moose Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Elwanda (Mongold) Combs of Moorefield; 
five daughters, Judy Tingler of Edinburg, VA, Betty Howell of 
Niles, Ohio, Dianna Fisher, Wilma Shook and Sarah VanMeter, 
all of Moorefield; one brother, O'Dell Combs of Baker, WV; 
15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, at the Elmore-
Chambers Funeral Home with Pastor Glenden Berg officiating.  
Burial was at the Walnut Grove Church Cemetery in Moorefield.

Pallbearers were Billy Hansberger, Jr., Jeffery Hansberger, 
James Parker, Jr., Randy VanMeter, Jason Arnold, Doug 
Brininger, Ray "Red" Funkhouser, Mackie Crites, Tom Tingler,

Floyd Early Combs, 76, of Kirby WV, died Wednesday, July 9, 
1997, in Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA.

Mr. Combs was born Oct. 25, 1920, in Kirby, WV, the son of 
Robert and Vergie Dyer Combs.  He was a timber man.

He was married to Rosie Earls.

Surviving with his wife is a son, Eddie Combs of Kirby.

A funeral was conducted Friday in McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, 
WV, with the Rev. William Fout officiating.  Burial was in 
Hott's Chapel Cemetery, Kirby.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, August 11, 1999

Glen "Buck" Combs, age 90 of Baker, WV, died on Monday, 
August 2, 1999 at the Hampshire Health Care Center in Romney, 
WV.

Mr. Combs was born on June 14, 1909 in Needmore, WV, a son of 
the late Granville and Rachel Teets Combs.  He was a farmer 
and worked for the WV Department of Highways in the Hardy 
County Area.  He was a member of the New Dale Church of the 
Brethren in Baker, WV.

He was married to Leona Funkhouser, who died on October 11, 
1993.

Surviving are two sons: Gilbert Combs of Kathleen, FL, 
Charles A. Funkhouser of Baker; one daughter, Betty Branson 
of Moorefield, WV; one brother, Ray Combs of Winchester, VA; 
two sisters, Sadie Brill of New Creek, WV, Ina Fletcher of 
Winchester; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and 
four great-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by 
five brothers and two sisters.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 4, 1999 at 
the New Dale Church of the Brethren.  Officiating was Rev. 
Ernest Halterman.  Interment was at the New Dale Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Roger Fletcher, O'Brien Combs, Lawrence 
Combs, James Ray Combs, Gene Combs and Donnie Combs.

Memorial contributions can be made to the New Dale Cemetery, 
c/o Merlin Delawder, Mathias, WV 26812.

Arrangements are by the Loy-Giffin Funeral Home in 
Wardensville, West Virginia.

Lorenze "Lo" Combs, age 94, of Baker, WV, passed away 
Monday, July 21, 1997 at E. A. Hawse Continuous Care 
Center, Baker, WV.

He was born in February 1903 and was the son of the late 
Julius and Susan Parker Combs.

Mr. Combs was a retired farmer.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Born June 17, 1935 in Needmore, WV, he was the son of the 
late Jacob Guy and Naomi Miller Combs.

He was a retired plumber and electrician and member of the 
New Dale Church of the Brethren, Baker, WV.

Surviving is his wife, Florence J. Shingleton Combs; two 
daughters, Diane M. Parker of Baker and Cynthia E. Smith 
of Mathias, WV; two stepdaughters, Carolyn A. Tusing of 
Mathias, WV and Diane K. Puffenberger of Bridgewater, VA; 
one stepson, Randy S. Hamilton of Mathias, WV; one brother, 
Guy O'Brian Combs of Delaplane, VA; one sister, Ramona J. 
Wolford of Baker, WV; one half-sister Carol J. Crider of 
Moorefield, WV; one half-brother; David L. Combs of 
Rockville, IN; one stepsister, Phyllis J. Sager of Baker, 
WV; one stepbrother, George O. Hibbard of Damascus, MD; 
four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and three 
step-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by three 
brothers.

Funeral services were held on Friday, December 17 at the 
New Dale Church of the Brethren with Pastor Ernest Halterman 
officiating.  Burial was in the New Dale Cemetery in Baker, WV.

Pallbearers were John Miller, Charles Wilkins, Wendall 
Funkhouser, Cleon Tusing Edwin Hamilton and Roland Combs.

Odie Gladyse Combs, 90, Lost City, WV, died Sunday, March 17, 
1996, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Combs was born Sept. 5, 1905, in Hardy County, WV, and 
was the daughter of the late Siram and Margaret Jenkins Whetzel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Combs.

Survivors include one daughter, Beulah Combs Hammidi, 
Orinda, Calif.; one son, Olen Combs, Mathias, WV; four 
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Jonathan Hedrick conducted a memorial service 
March 30 at Jenkins Chapel United Methodist Church.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Grandle Funeral 
Home in Broadway.  The body was cremated.

Francis E. Conard, age 75, of 216 Waterford Lane, Winchester, 
VA, died September 3, 1997 at Winchester Medical Center, 
Winchester, VA.

Born September 29, 1921 at Warren, Ohio, he was the son of 
the late Joseph and Mary Miller Conard.

Mr. Conard was a retired carpenter, a veteran of WW II U.S. 
Army, and a member of the Full Gospel Pentecostal Church,
Martinsburg, WV.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Judy Conard, 
January 18, 1994.

Surviving are five daughters, Marie Loy of Gore, VA, Mary 
Colley of Manassas, VA, Joyce Hardy of Inwood, WV, Connie 
Briggs of Springfield, VA and Amy Ann O'Loughlin of 
Centerville, VA; four sons, David Conard of Winchester, 
VA, John Conard of Front Royal, VA, Carson Conard and 
Joseph Conard of Santa Clara, CA; one sister, Hildreth 
Bailey of Front Royal, VA; three brothers, Stacy Conard 
and Willis Conard of Rio, WV and John Richard Conard of 
Indian Harbor Beach, FL; 19 grandchildren; and 11 great-
grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 6, at 2:00 p.m. 
at the Loy Funeral Home, with Rev. Raymond E. Jones and Rev. 
Oscar Motilal officiating.  Burial was in the Conard Cemetery, 
Wardensville, WV.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Loy 
Funeral Home, Wardensville, WV.

LOLA CAIN WEMPE CONNELLY
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 14, 1999

Lola M. Connelly, age 83, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999 
in the Pine Run Health Center, Furlong, PA, following a 
heart attack.

Born February 15, 1915 in Moorefield, WV, she was the 
daughter of the late Price Joshua Cain and Bertie Malcolm 
Cain.  She was also preceded in death by two sisters, one 
brother and infant twins, a brother and sister.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert 
Wempe of Cumberland, MD, who was an aviator, killed in 
World War II.

She was the wife of John E. Connelly, who passed away 
December 1992 in Willowick, Ohio, where they resided.

She was the beloved mother of three sons, John Connelly 
and Wendy, Furlong, PA (with whom she resided since 1993), 
Richard and Karen, Kirtland, Ohio, and Dr. Steven Connelly 
and Becky, Canton, Ohio.  She is also survived by eight 
loving grandchildren, one sister, Nellie C. Thomas, 
Moorefield, WV and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Connelly was a homemaker, a den mother, a homeroom 
Mother since 1950 and a member of the St. Mary Magdalene 
Church since 1967.

A memorial service and burial will be held on Friday, 
April 16 at the Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery near Cumberland, 
MD.

She was loved by all who knew her and will be sadly missed 
by those whose life she touched.

died Wednesday, February 16, 2000 in his home.

He was born August 10, 1942 in Binghamton, New York.  He was a 
son of Claude Cook of Binghamton, New York and Nellie Pearl 
Bosley Twinning of Johnson City, New York.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.

He retired in 1997 from IBM in Mechanicsburg.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Donna 
E. Cranmer Cook; two daughters, Cindy Our (Mrs. James M.) 
Mandes, Hershey; Patricia Ann Cook, Enola; two stepsons, 
Keith Mullen of Somerset and Daniel Mullen of Shippensburg; 
one brother, Robert E. Cook of Fresno, Colorado; one sister, 
Doris Carrier of Johnson City, New York; three grandchildren 
and a number of nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death 
by one brother.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 22, 2000 in 
the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg with 
the Rev. Dr. Jonathan C. Terry officiating.  Burial was with 
military honors conducted by the Shippensburg American Legion 
and VFW Posts in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, West 
Hanover Township in Lebanon County.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, April 24, 1996

Wardella Merele Mongold Cooke, 61, Hanover, died March 30, 
1996 at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond.

Mrs. Cooke was born Sept. 28, 1934, in Mathias, WV and was a 
daughter of the late William L. and Maggie Whetzel Mongold.

Mrs. Cooke was retired from Bell Atlantic Telephone Co. and 
graduated from Mathias High School.

On Dec. 23, 1963, she married Franklin D. Cooke, who survives.

Other survivors include one son, Jeffrey S. Cooke; one stepson 
Franklin D. Cooke, Jr.; four brothers, Wayne Mongold, Weyers 
Cave; Elza Mongold, Bloomington, IN; Armon Mongold, Winchester 
and William Mongold, Jr., Matawan, NJ; two sisters, Lola See, 
Timberville and Nona Pauley, Richmond; and three step-
grandchildren.

The funeral was held April 2 at Bliley Funeral Home Staples 
Mill Chapel.  Burial was in Signal Memorial Park.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, October 23, 1996
Hannah Blue (Harmison) Cookman, age 77, of Romney, WV, died 
Monday, October 14, 1996, at her residence.

Born in Romney, WV, on December 19, 1918, she was the daughter 
of the late Frank L. and Elizabeth F. (Guthrie) Harmison.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Beverly Cookman, 
who died May 11, 1994.

Mrs. Cookman was a devoted wife and mother, having been a member 
of the Romney Presbyterian Church, Past Worthy Matron and member 
of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter No. 84, and former member 
of the Romney City Council.

Surviving are two sons, Judge Donald H. Cookman and wife, Paula, 
Romney, WV, James M. Cookman and wife, Catherine, Petersburg, 
WV; one daughter, Mrs. Beverly C. Keadle and husband, Judge 
Thomas H., Buckhannon, WV; eight grandchildren; and one 
great-grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, October 17, at the 
Romney Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John S. Franklin 
officiating.  Interment was at Indian Mound Cemetery.

Neva Marie Crawford, 70, of Wardensville, WV, died 
Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Crawford was born on Dec. 14, 1926 in Wardensville, 
the daughter of the late William E. and Mae Vance 
Strosnider.  She was a member of the Marvin Chapel 
United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Crawford was married to John B. Crawford on May 31, 
1957 in Hagerstown, MD.

Surviving with her husband are three sons, Dennis A. 
Crawford of Stephens City, J. Michael Crawford of 
Strasburg, James B. Crawford of Wardensville; two 
sisters, Hilda Rinard and Annabelle Fishel, both of 
Wardensville; one brother, Ernest Strosnider of Luray; 
four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held Sunday in Wardensville United Methodist 
Church with the Rev. Jeff Anderson officiating.  Burial was 
in the Greenfield Cemetery, Wardensville.

THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, February 23, 2000

Alice Rebecca "Granny" Crites, age 85, of Fisher, WV, passed 
away early Monday morning, February 14, 2000 at the Grant 
Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV.

Born April 12, 1914 in Dooley, WV, she was the daughter of 
the late Zacariah Christian Reel and Eliza Catherine (Snyder) 
Reel.  Besides her parents she was also preceded in death by 
her husband, Homer Charles Crites in 1972, one sister, one 
brother and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Crites was a homemaker and a member of the Rig Assembly 
of God.

Surviving are two daughters, Genevieve Sherman and Anna C. 
Miller, both of Fisher; two sons, Robert W. "Bob" Crites of 
Fisher and Carl E. Crites of Harrisonburg, VA; one sister, 
Betty Miller of Fisher; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-
grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday at the Rig Assembly 
of God with Pastor Brad Taylor and Pastor Carole Goldizen 
officiating.  Burial followed in the Crites Family Cemetery 
in Rig.

Pallbearers were James H. Sherman, William A. (Billy) Miller, 
Jr., Robert F. (Bobby) Miller, Robert Matthew Crites, Craig M. 
Crites and Eric Robert Crites.  Honorary pallbearers were 
great-grandsons.

G. ROSCOE CRITES
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, January 26, 2000

Mr. Goldie Roscoe Crites, age 92, of Petersburg, West 
Virginia, died on Tuesday morning, January 18, 2000 at 
the Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, West 
Virginia.

Born October 3, 1907 in Dobbin, West Virginia, Roscoe grew 
up in the Dorcas area where he visited regularly in his 
daily car travels for the last many years of his life.  
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Delona Hull 
Crites and his daughter, Rose Marie Crites of Morgantown.  
He is survived by his grandson, Jon Michael Crites, age 30, 
of Charleston, South Carolina, his sister-in-law, Kitty Lou 
(Hull) Barr, of Petersburg; one sister, Elise Whitmer of 
Petersburg; two half sisters, Daisy Frize of Martinsburg, 
WV and Gaynell (Bunnie) Eagle of Old Town, Maryland; and 
many devoted nieces and nephews.  Roscoe was the son of 
the late George Edward Crites and Myrtle Stump Crites.

Along with his late wife, Delona, who worked as one of the 
original "Rosie the Riveters" during World War II, Roscoe 
also proudly served his country by working on the assembly 
line at the Detroit Airplane Plant in Detroit, Michigan.  
Upon returning to Petersburg after the war, Roscoe worked 
at the Petersburg Tannery and then for the Petersburg Oil 
Company where he retired after many years of service and 
was a Charter Member of the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Company.

Mr. Crites was a long-standing and faithful member of the 
Grove Street United Methodist Church.  He was also a loyal 
and proud member of the International Order of Oddfellows 
and the Modern Woodmen.  He was a proud husband, father 
and grandfather, a true patriot and Christian and a 
classic representative of what has recently been termed 
"The Greatest Generation" of our time.

Funeral services were held at the Petersburg Grove Street 
United Methodist Church on Thursday, January 20, 2000 with 
the Reverend Richard Longbon officiating.  Burial was at 
the Lahmansville Memorial Cemetery in Lahmansville, West 
Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to 
the Grove Street United Methodist Church in Petersburg, 
West Virginia.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the

The funeral for Warren Harding Cullers, 76, Route 3, 
Broadway, was held on Thursday, Aug. 14 at Calvary 
Baptist Church near Timberville.

Pastors Guy L. Ferrell, Charlie Reynolds, Charlie 
Miller and Ross Halbersma conducted the service.  
Burial was at Mount Grove Cemetery in Fulks Run.

Mr. Cullers died Sunday, August 10, 1997 at Rockingham 
Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

He was born February 25, 1921, in Mathias, WV and was a 
son of the late Mary Susan Cullers Bible.

He was employed at Loy Mays Plumbing and Heating in Mount 
Jackson and retired as an electrician after 12 years.  He 
was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and an Army 
Veteran of World War II.

On Feb. 7, 1946, he married the former Charlotte Dove, 
who survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Ellen C. Branner, 
Timberville, Frances C. McGehee, Falls Church, Debbie C. 
Brosius, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Denise J. Janocka, 
Edinburg; two sons, Keith W. Cullers, Feng Shan, Taiwan 
and Kent E. Cullers, Broadway; one half brother, Marvin 
Bible, Scherr, WV; four stepbrothers, Merlin Bible and 
Ronnie W. Bible, both of Petersburg, WV; Roger L. Bible, 
Moorefield, WV; two stepsisters, Norma E. Feaster, New 
Creek, WV and Hilda F. Lambert, Franklin, WV; 11 
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

ROSE MARIE CRITES
THE MOOREFIELD (WV) EXAMINER, Wednesday, July 21, 1999

Ms. Rose Marie Crites, age 50, of Morgantown, West Virginia, 
died on Tuesday morning, July 13, 1999 at the West Virginia 
University Hospital, Ruby Memorial, in Morgantown.  Ms. 
Crites fought a valiant 2-year battle with leukemia.

Born August 25, 1948 in Petersburg, West Virginia, she was 
the only child of G. Roscoe Crites and the late Delona 
(Hull) Crites.  Her mother, Delona, one of the original 
"Rosie the Riveters" during World War II, named her 
daughter "Rosie" in remembrance of those days in the 
Detroit Airplane Plant where she and Roscoe performed 
their war-time duty to this nation.  Rosie was also the 
granddaughter of the late Albert and Odessa Frye Hill; 
and the niece of the late Anna Lee and James M.K. Reid, 
Jr., and Kitty Lou and Roland Barr of Petersburg.

Ms. Crites was a member of the United Methodist Church.  
She graduated from Petersburg High School in 1966 and 
received an Associates Degree from Potomac State College 
in 1968.  She moved to Morgantown in 1968 to begin her 
career, and for the past 23 years has served as the lead 
Administrative Assistant to the Monongalia Prosecuting 
Attorney in Morgantown.  In that position, she was 
looked upon as the focal point for the day-to-day 
operations of the courts in the Seventeenth Judicial 
Circuit.

Besides her father, Roscoe, now age 91, she is survived 
by her son, Jon Michael Crites, age 29 of Charleston, 
South Carolina; her beloved, long-time companion and 
partner in life, Charles Slominsky; one aunt, Elsie 
Whitmer of Petersburg and her wonderdog, Cricket.  Also 
surviving are one aunt, numerous devoted cousins and 
other family members and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Petersburg Grove Street 
United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 15, 1999 at 1:00 
p.m. with the Reverend Richard Longbon officiating.  
Burial was at the Lahmansville Cemetery in Lahmansville, 
West Virginia immediately following the service.

A Memorial Service was held for Rosie in Morgantown on 
Friday, July 16, 1999 at the Monongalia County Courthouse.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to 
the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center for Leukemia Research
