Eugene Cifers


Eugene Cifers, 74, of Virgilina, widower of Margaret Newton Cifers, died March 1 
at Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC.
Mr. Cifers was the son of the late Robert and Vada Simpkins Cifers. He was 
retired from U.S. Plywood and was a member of Union United Church of Christ.
Survivors include a companion, Sparky; one daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and 
James Crews, of Lewisburg, WVA; one son, Douglas Eugene Cifers of Gainsville, 
FL; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Wilma Cifers, of Gatewood, NC; 
four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Cifers were held March 4 at 1 p.m. at Union United Church of 
Christ with the revs. Chuck Lowery and Bobby Whitfield officiating. Burial 
followed at Virgilina Cemetery.

Nellie Glass Conner


Nellie Glass Conner, 61, of 5023 James D. Hagood Hwy., Scottsburg, died March 2 
at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Conner was born in Halifax County on March 17, 1941, the daughter of John 
Presley Glass and Lena Conner Glass and was married to Willis D. Conner. She was 
a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa C. Brooks 
and husband, Mitchell D., Dawn C. Rolfe and husband, Raymond J., all of 
Scottsburg, and Wendy C. Casen and husband, Stephen W., of Mt. Laurel; one 
sister, Mary Ann Glass and husband, Lonnie Upole, of Warsaw; three 
grandchildren, Joshua M. Brooks and Nathan M. Rolfe, both of Scottsburg, and 
Abby J. Casen of Mt. Laurel. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one 
brother, Joseph Glass.
Services for Mrs. Conner will be held today, March 5 at 3 p.m. at Bethel Baptist 
Church with the Rev. Dr. Tony Brooks and the Rev. H.V. Conner officiating. 
Burial will take place in the church cemetery.

Isabella Norma Harris


Isabella Norma Harris, 67, of 2000 Ridge Street, South Boston, died March 1 at 
Halifax Regional Hospital.
Ms. Harris was born in Halifax County on September 17, 1935, the daughter of the 
late James Harris and Elizabeth Crews. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist 
Church, and a former employee of Tultex, Inc.
Survivors include two daughters, Dora Lassiter and Gyvonia Harris, both of South 
Boston; four sons, Amos Harris, Tyrone Harris and Donald Harris, all of South 
Boston, and Lawrence Harris of Halifax; seven grandchildren; two great-
grandchildren; one sister, Mary J. Morris of South Boston; and one daughter-in-
law, Angela Harris of South Boston. She was preceded in death by one son, Ronald 
Harris; and one sister, Effie J. Bailey.
Funeral services for Ms. Harris will be held today, March 5, at 1 p.m. at Mt. 
Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. James Crowder officiating. Burial will 
follow in Rose Garden Cemetery.

Francis Watkins 'Biggy' Hunt


Francis Watkins 'Biggy' Hunt, 66, of 1171 Duck Trail, Halifax, died March 2 at 
Duke University Medical Center.
Mr. Hunt was born in Halifax County on May 11, 1936, the son of Watkins Glenn 
Hunt and Elizabeth McDuffie Hunt, and was married to Elaine Thompson Hunt.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Halifax, a board member for 
Virginia Ducks Unlimited, and was owner of B. Hunt Enterprises.
Survivors of Mr. Hunt include his wife; one daughter, Lillian Hunt Cox and 
husband, W. Preston Cox, of Midlothian; one son, Francis Watkins Hunt Jr. and 
wife, Alice Clarke Hunt, of Richmond; two stepdaughters, Robin Bagwell Young of 
Kitty Hawk, NC, and Sandra M. Cash and husband, Steve, of Halifax; one stepson, 
Mark A. Martin of Halifax; 10 grandchildren, Kate, Watkins III and Cabot Hunt, 
all of Richmond, Lilly and Frances Ann Cox of Midlothian, Christian, Jordan and 
Makayla Martin, and Sydney Cash, all of Halifax, and Ann Liv Young of Kitty 
Hawk; one sister, Virginia 'Poo' Hunt Roberts and husband, Lucien W. Roberts 
Jr., of South Boston.
Services for Mr. Hunt will be held today, March 5 at 11 a.m. at St. John's 
Episcopal Church with the Revs. Andy Bawtree and Ralph Harrell officiating. 
Burial will take place in the church cemetery.

Susie Baker Moore Moore


Susie Baker Moore Moore, 87, of 7082 Mountain Road, Halifax, died March 2 at 
Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Moore was born in Halifax County on February 20, 1916, the daughter of Amos 
Moore and Mary Miller Moore and was married to Hugh Canada Moore. She was a 
member of Oak Level Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by four nephews, L.W. Henderson of Oak Level, Hatcher Crenshaw 
and Lorenzo Dow Ragland, both of South Boston, and Ellis L. Moore Jr. of 
Halifax; and one niece, Jackie Moore Jones of Keeling. She was preceded in death 
by three sisters, Kathleen Ferrell, Bertha Ragland and Sallie Crenshaw; and two 
brothers, J.W. Moore and Ellis L. Moore.
Services for Mrs. Moore will be held today, March 5 at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral 
Home Chapel with the Rev. David Kilpatrick officiating. Burial will take place 
in Halifax Memorial Gardens. There will be lunch at Oak Level Presbyterian 
Church following the service.

Sara Grace Pulley, 1 month old, of 154 Kentuck Road, Danville, died March 2 at 
MCV-Richmond. She was born in Richmond on February 2, the daughter of Jason and 
Shannon Shotwell Pulley.

the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Sallie Crowder Woody, 99, of 1025 Woody Loop, Alton, died March 2 at Halifax

Mrs. Woody was born in Halifax County on July 6, 1903, the daughter of Thomas 
Crowder and Mary Toot Crowder, and was married to Clyde William Woody Sr. She 
was a member of Bethel Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Woody Newton of Roxboro, Mary B. 
Woody of Alton, and Freddie R. Woody of San Francisco, CA; and five 
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Clyde W. Woody Jr.
Services for Mrs. Woody were held March 4 at 5 p.m. at Bethel Hill Baptist 
Church with the Rev. Jason Evans officiating. Burial followed in the church 
cemetery.

Lucy Holt Byers, 84, of 1139 Union Church Road, Halifax, died March 5 at her 
home.
Mrs. Byers was born in Halifax County on July 31, 1918, the daughter of Robert 
Pinchbeck Holt and Lucy Petty Cole Holt and was married to Joseph Crayton Byers. 
She was a member of Union United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one sister, Hallie H. Hankins of 
Ingram; and many nieces and nephews.
Services for Mrs. Byers will be held tomorrow, March 8 at 11 a.m. at Powell 
Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Thomas Boggs and Kent Wise will officiate. Burial 
will follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home this evening from 7:00

Roy Cecil Fisher


Roy Cecil Fisher, 74, of 709 Riely Avenue, South Boston, died March 5 at Halifax 
Regional Hospital.
Mr. Fisher was born in Halifax County on March 8, 1928, the son of George W. 
Fisher and Lena Stowe Fisher. He was a member of Center United Church of Christ 
and Halifax Country Club.
Survivors include one daughter, Teresa C. Fisher of Glen Allen; and two sisters, 
Gracie Fisher Dodson of Nathalie and Bertha Fisher Motley of South Boston.
Services for Mr. Fisher will be held tomorrow, March 8 at 2 p.m. at Powell 
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Wilder officiating. Burial will take 
place in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Wanda Gail Robertson Gonzales, 50, of 1017 Grove Avenue, South Boston, died 
March 5 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Gonzales was born in Halifax County on May 31, 1952, the daughter of Floyd 
Robertson and Helen Barksdale Robertson. She attended Revelation Baptist Church, 
and was a former employee of Wabash Magnetics and Amoco Food Shop.
Survivors include her father of Vernon Hill; two sons, Rickie Compton of South 
Boston and John Richard Scheiderer of Vernon Hill; two daughters, Angela Rocha 
and Jennifer Scheiderer, both of Winston-Salem, NC; three sisters, Carolyn 
Barksdale and Irene Seamster, both of Nathalie, and Shelia Martin of South 
Boston; two brothers, Chris Robertson of South Boston and Ronnie Robertson of 
Vernon Hill; and 10 grandchildren. Mrs. Gonzales was preceded in death by her 
mother.
Services will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel tomorrow, March 8 at 3 p.m. 
with the Revs. Rudolph Jacobs and Richard Saunders officiating. Burial will take 
place in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Lamont Logan, 20, of Nathalie, died February 28 in Brookneal.
Mr. Logan was the son of William S. Logan of South Boston and the late Kathy 
Logan.
Survivors include his father; one brother, Tony Logan; maternal grandmother, 
Angeline Boyd; and his paternal grandparents, Hoover and Mary Logan of Halifax.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. March 5 at New Shiloh Baptist Church in 
Nathalie with burial in the church cemetery.

Henry L. Warren Jr.


Henry L. Warren Jr., 74, of Columbia, MD, formerly of Halifax County, died March 
4 in Columbia.
Mr. Warren was born in Ansted, WV on February 12, 1929, the son of Henry and 
Elizabeth Warren.
Survivors include four daughters, Deborah W. Naranjo of Columbia, Annita Warren 
and Anita Warren, both of Baltimore, MD, and Shirley Barksdale of Martinsville; 
eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Seludia Warren of 
Columbia. Mr. Warren was preceded in death by a son, Lewis Warren.
Funeral services will be held March 11 at 5 p.m. at Wayland Baptist Church in 
Columbia.

Roscoe Douglas Woods


Roscoe Douglas Woods, 80, of 213 Greenfield Road, South Boston, died March 5 at 
his home.
Mr. Woods was born in Mecklenburg County on February 2, 1923, the son of the 
late James Woods and Hallie Duggar Woods and was married to Frances Earley 
Woods. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Clarksville, was a WWII 
Army Veteran, and was a retired employee of the New York Transit Authority.
Survivors include his wife; one sister, Helen Wray of New York, NY; and one 
brother, Gerall O. Woods of Brooklyn, NY.
Funeral services for Mr. Woods will be held Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. at 
Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frederick Kelly officiating. Burial 
will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Ralph Earl Austin


Funeral services for Ralph Earl Austin were held yesterday at the Brooks Funeral 
Home Chapel at 2 p.m.
The Revs. Don Davidson and Marvin Cook officiated.
Burial followed in the Clover cemetery.
Mr. Austin died Friday, March 7 in Halifax Regional hospital.
He was 79.
Mr. Austin was born in Halifax County on December 6, 1923, to the late Jim H. 
Austin and the late Nannie Moss Austin.
AVirginia Game Warden for 40 years, Mr. Austin was married to the late Gladys 
Conner Austin, and was a member of Clover United Methodist Church, the American 
Legion Post 8 and the Halifax Sportsman's Club.
Survivors include one son, David "Speedy" Austin of Raleigh, one brother, James 
R. "Pete" Austin of Shelbyville, Tn. and two sisters, Barbara Ann Jones of Red 
Oak and Sandra Edwards of Mechanicsville.
He was predeceased by one son, Richard Michael Austin, two brothers, Sonny 
Austin and Dude Austin and one sister, Ruby Holdren.
The family request that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Patrick 
Henry Boys and Girls Plantations, P.O. Box 1398, Brookneal, Va., 24528.

Rosa Lee Ballou, 49, of 6217 Hunting Creek Road, Nathalie, died March 6 at 
Halifax Regional Hospital.
Ms. Ballou was born in Halifax County on August 19, 1953, the daughter of 
Prunious Ballou and Nell Edmunds Ballou. She was a member of Bethel Grove 
Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Katherine Ballou of Nathalie; four 
grandchildren; two sisters, Brenda Ballou and Carolyn Ballou, both of South 
Boston; three brothers, Perry Ballou of Clarksville, Lawrence Ballou of Halifax, 
and Jerry Ballou of Lawrenceville.

William Lloyd Gravitt


Funeral services for William Lloyd Gravitt, 79, of Huell Matthews Highway, will 
be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, with burial 
in the church cemetery.
The Rev. Don Davidson will conduct the service.
Mr. Gravitt died Saturday at McGuire Virginia Hospital in Richmond.
He was a retired tobacco farmer and Army veteran.
Mr. Gravitt was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church, a member of the 
American Legion Post 8 and the D.A.V.
He was born in Halifax County on September 29, 1923, a son of the late Hustler 
A. Gravitt Sr. and Willie Lucy Cole Gravitt.
Mr. Gravitt is survived by his step-mother, Bertha L. Gravitt of Virgilina, 
three sons, Randolph L. Gravitt and Christopher L. Gravitt, both of South 
Boston, and Gerald B. Gravitt of Vernon Hill, three brothers, Hustler A. Gravitt 
Jr. and Arthur Gravitt, both of South Boston, and Billy Gravitt of Richmond, one 
sister, Betty Ann Drury of Albany, Georgia, six grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren.
Visitation time will be at Brooks Funeral Home on Tuesday between 7:00-8:30 
p.m., and at other times at the home, 4122 Huell Matthews Highway, South Boston.

Charlotte Elizabeth Kent


Charlotte Elizabeth Kent, 83, of Wilmington, NC, died March 6 at New Hanover 
Medical Center.
Mrs. Kent was born in Camden County, NC on January 13, 1920, the daughter of 
Charlie Sawyer and Bette Simpson Sawyer and was married to Maurice Samuel Kent.
Survivors include one daughter, Sharyn K. Adams of South Hill; one son, Maurice 
Kent Jr. of Virgilina; three grandchildren, Gary L. Kent of Boydton, Charlotte 
K. Pennington and Brian A. Keeton, both of South Hill; three great-
grandchildren, Chase Kent of Boydton, Nathaniel Pennington and Dale Keeton, both 
of South Hill.
Graveside services for Mrs. Kent will be held today, March 10 at 11 a.m. at 
Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Sue Wiley conducting the service.

Betty Sue Penick


Ms. Betty Sue Penick of Wickham Street, South Boston, died Thursday, March 6, at 
Halifax Regional Hospital.
Ms. Penick was 55.
She was born in Halifax County on October 18, 1947, and was a daughter of 
Geanettie Penick. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Ms. Penick is survived by four daughters, Ms. Patrice Penick and Ms. Monica 
Penick, both of South Boston, Mrs. Samantha Wade of Clover and Mrs. Stacy Greene 
of South Carolina; three sons, David Collins, Alfie Penick and Tracey Bailey of 
Alexandria; 13 grandchildren; her mother, Ms. Geanettie Penick of Clover; four 
sisters: Mrs. Sarah Wilson and Mrs. Jacqueline Lacks of Halifax, Mrs. Yvonne 
Gordon of Philadelphia and Mrs. Joyce Sydnor of Alexandria.
Other survivors include seven brothers: Warren Penick, Jesse Penick, Freddie 
Penick and Fulton Penick, all of Halifax, Robert Penick of Louisiana, Lawrence 
Penick of Alexandria and Vincent Thompson of Philadelphia; one son-in-law, one 
daughter-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In honor of the wishes of Ms. Penick, there will be no memorial service. In lieu 
of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial contributions be made to the 
American Heart Association, Mid-Atlantic Region, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va.

Ms. Betty Sue Penick of Wickham Street, South Boston, died Thursday, March 6, at

She was born in Halifax County on October 18, 1947, and was a daughter of 
Geanettie Penick. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Ms. Penick is survived by four daughters, Ms. Patrice Penick and Ms. Monica 
Penick, both of South Boston, Mrs. Samantha Wade of Clover and Mrs. Stacy Greene 
of South Carolina; three sons, David Collins, Alfie Penick and Tracey Bailey of 
Alexandria; 13 grandchildren; her mother, Ms. Geanettie Penick of Clover; four 
sisters: Mrs. Sarah Wilson and Mrs. Jacqueline Lacks of Halifax, Mrs. Yvonne 
Gordon of Philadelphia and Mrs. Joyce Sydnor of Alexandria.
Other survivors include seven brothers: Warren Penick, Jesse Penick, Freddie 
Penick and Fulton Penick, all of Halifax, Robert Penick of Louisiana, Lawrence 
Penick of Alexandria and Vincent Thompson of Philadelphia; one son-in-law, one 
daughter-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In honor of the wishes of Ms. Penick, there will be no memorial service. In lieu 
of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial contributions be made to the 
American Heart Association, Mid-Atlantic Region, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 
23058.

Gloria Yvonne Davis


Gloria Yvonne Davis, 50, of Forestville, MD, formerly of South Boston, died 
March 8 at Arlington Hospice Care Center in Arlington.
Ms. Davis was born in South Boston on October 6, 1952, the daughter of Samuel 
Davis Sr. and Rosa Majors Davis. She was a member of Faith United Church of 
Christ in Washington, DC.
Survivors include her mother of South Boston; two sisters, Sandra Davis-Johnson 
of Forestville, and Audrey Davis-Sehon of Sunnyvale, CA; and two brothers-in-
law, Walter Johnson and Michael Sehon.
Graveside services for Ms. Davis will be held tomorrow, March 15 at 11 a.m. at 
Halifax Memorial Gardens in South Boston. The family will receive friends at the 
gravesite Saturday.

James Louis Saunders


James Louis Sanders, 62, of Smithville, NC, died March 10 in MD.
Mr. Sanders was born in Smithville on October 15, 1940, the son of Robert and 
Quissie Sanders.
Survivors include one son, Michael P. Sanders of MD; one daughter-in-law, Tyra 
Sanders; four grandchildren; and his former wife, Queen Davis. He was preceded 
in death by a friend, Sarah Canty.
Burial for Mr. Sanders will be held tomorrow, March 15, at 10 a.m. at the Miller 
Family Cemetery in South Boston.

Vianna Lowe Pleasants


Vianna Lowe 'Vi' Pleasants, 81, of 206 Yates Street, South Boston, died March 11 
at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Pleasants was born in Somerset, KY on January 6, 1922, the daughter of 
William Jackson Lowe and Lillie Ware Lowe and was married to Alton Baxton 
Pleasants. She was a member of First Baptist Church of South Boston.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and daughters-in-law, Alton B. Pleasants 
III and wife, Sarah, of South Boston, and Rodney M. Pleasants and wife, Donna, 
of Danville; one brother, David Lowe of Somerset.
Mrs. Pleasants was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Lori Michelle 
Pleasants; five sisters, Violet Vorich, Jesse Plummer, Violet Girdler, Ruth 
Helen Roberson, and Virginia Lowe; and one brother, Daniel Lowe.
Services will be held today, March 14 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with 
the Revs. Dane Skelton and Tim Nuckles officiating. Burial will take place in 
Danville Memorial Gardens.

Arthur Lee Williams, 84, of 1110 Deer Ridge Trail, South Boston, died March 10

Mr. Williams was born in Halifax County on February 13, 1919, the son of James 
H. Williams and Willie Barksdale Williams. He was a member of New Vernon Baptist 
Church and was also a Navy Veteran.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Williams Screen of Bronx, NY; two 
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, James Williams of 
South Boston.

Samuel Louis Ashby, 69, of Gladys died March 13 at his home. He was the husband 
of the late Helen Hailey Ashby.
Mr. Ashby was born in Halifax County on January 15, 1934, the son of the late 
Johnnie Louis Ashby and Maggie Mason Ashby. He was a member of Childrey Baptist 
Church and a retired employee of Burruss Lumber Company.
Survivors include one son, Bobby Wayne Ashby and wife, Angie, of Baltimore, MD; 
three daughters, Glenda Dale Ashby, Janet Beadles and fiance', George, all of 
Baltimore, and Lisa Dawson and husband, Raleigh, of Altavista; three sisters, 
Lucille A. Woosley, Ethel A. Woosley and Geneva A. Crews, all of Nathalie.
A funeral service for Mr. Ashby was held March 15 at 11 a.m. at Childrey Baptist 
Church by the Rev. Rodney Barwick. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Ruth Elliott Pulliam


Funeral services for Ruth Elliott Pulliam of Aarons Creek Road will be held at 
Hitesburg Baptist Church on Tuesday at 3 p.m with burial in the church cemetery.
The Revs. Lee Merck, Richard Cooke and Vance Midgett will officiate.
Mrs. Pulliam, 87, died Sunday at The Woodview.
She was born in Halifax County on September 18, 1915, a daughter of the late 
Nannie Rose Hudson Elliott and Hammett Elliott. She was married to the late John 
Pulliam.
Mrs. Pulliam, a homemaker, was a member of Hitesburg Baptist Church.
Mrs. Pulliam is survived by two sons, Ronnie Pulliam of Aarons Creek and J. Ray 
Pulliam of Lynchburg, one daughter, Joan P. Newman of Lynchburg, one brother, 
Robert Elliott of Virgilina, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Carroll Elliott, Alfred Elliott, 
Marshall Elliott, Ben Elliott and Edgar Elliott and one sister, Dexter Elliott 
Smith.
Visitation time at Brooks Funeral Home is Monday from 7:00-8:30 p.m., and at

Rawleigh Allen 'Bossie' Snead


Funeral services for Rawleigh Allen "Bossie" Snead will be held today at 2 p.m. 
at the Clover Baptist Church.

Mr. Snead died Saturday at the Tar River Manor in Greenville, N.C.
He was 79.
Mr. Snead was born in Halifax County on May 25, 1923 to the late Carl Raymond 
Snead and the late Sallie Throckmorton Snead.
He was a member of the Clover Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 
where he served during World War II.
Mr. Snead is survived by one daughter, Sandra Snead Everett and husband Lester 
of Robersonville, N.C., two sisters, Mary S. Parks of Scottsburg and Sarah S. 
Weston and husband Ernest of Chase City, one brother, George Snead and wife

Funeral services for Felton Edison Whitlow, formerly of South Boston, will be 
held today at 3 p.m. at the Palmetto Street Church of God in Florence, S.C.

Mr. Whitlow died early Friday morning in a Florence hospital after an illness.
He was 77.
Mr. Whitlow was born in South Boston to the late George H. and Gladys Wilkerson 
Whitlow.
He was a member of the Freedom Worship Center in South Boston, and was a retired 
buyer for Export Leaf Tobacco Co.
Mr. Whitlow is survived by his wife, Pearl Campbell Whitlow, four children, 
Linda Barnio of Florence, Danny Whitlow and Ricky Whitlow, both of South Boston 
and Jack Whitlow of Lexington, S.C., one sister, Sylvia McCurry of Halifax 
County, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Carrie Womack Adams, 85, of 160 Craddock Street, Halifax, died March 17 at 
Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Adams was born in Cumberland County on March 12, 1917, the daughter of 
Norvell J. Womack and Mattie Sue Wright Womack, and was married to Walter Carsie 
Adams Jr. She was a member of Beth Car Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Jimmie McCourt of Roxboro, NC; and one 
niece, Shirley Jean Everton of Farmville.
Services for Mrs. Adams will be held today, March 19 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral 
Home Chapel with the Rev. Lewis Wall officiating. Burial will take place in 
Floral Hills Memory Gardens, Danville.

Alma Puryear Comer, 92, of 4029 East Hyco Road, South Boston, died March 17 at 
Twin Oaks Convalescent Home.
Mrs. Comer was born in Halifax County on February 1, 1911, the daughter of 
Howard Lee Puryear and Minnie Forlines Puryear, and was married to Sampson 
Comer. She was a member of Cherry Hill United Methodist Church where she was a 
member of the WSCS.
Survivors include one son, Sammy W. Comer and his wife, JoAnne, of South Boston; 
one grandson, Clinton S. Comer; five sisters, Ester P. Tillotson and Virginia P. 
Morris, both of Virgilina, Myrtis P. Brann of Reedville, Clara P. Wimmer of 
Raleigh, NC, and Catherine P. Kimbrough of Irvington.
Other than her parents, Mrs. Comer was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara 
Ann Anderson, and two brothers, Wilson and Robert Lee Puryear.
Services will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel today, March 19 at 2 p.m. 
with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge 
Cemetery.

Frank Brooks Easley


Frank Brooks Easley, 82, of Clarksville, died March 15. He was the husband of 
Joan Boyd Easley.
Mr. Easley was born in Clarksville. He operated Easley Supply and was a mail 
carrier for many years.
Funeral services were held March 17 at 11 a.m. at Clarksville Presbyterian 
Church. Burial followed at Oakhurst Cemetery.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Easley is survived by two daughters, Barbara Easley 
Stanley of Montpelier and Frankie Owen Easley of Madison Heights; two brothers, 
Robert Henry Easley of Spartenburg, SC and, Eugene Brannock Easley of Staunton. 
He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Gibson 'Pomp' Easley, and a daughter, 
Molly Davis Easley.

Ellis Jones Ingram Sr.


Ellis Jones Ingram Sr., 80, of Stagecoach Road, Nathalie, died March 17 at Berry 
Hill Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Audrey Conner Ingram.
Mr. Ingram was born in Halifax County on June 26, 1922, the son of Eraustus 
Jones Ingram and Willie Watts Ingram. He was a member of Clover Bottom Baptist 
Church where he served as a deacon, and the French Masonic Lodge. He was the 
retired owner of Town and Country Upholstery.
Survivors include three sons, Ellis J. Ingram Jr. and wife, Emma, of Swords 
Creek, Charles Ingram and wife, Jackie, of South Boston, and David Ingram and 
wife, Gloria, of Gladys; three daughters, Hilda Martin of Republican Grove, 
Clara Fariss and husband, Everett, of South Boston, and Mary Gregory of Duloth, 
GA; one brother, Sidney Ingram of Halifax; four sisters, Mary Richardson and 
Peggy Wilkins, both of South Boston, Arlene Oakes of Halifax and Sally Elliott 
of Oxford, NC; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in 
death by a brother, Wesley Ingram, and a sister, Betty Jane Smith.
A funeral service for Mr. Ingram will be held at 2 p.m. today, March 19, at 
Clover Bottom Baptist Church by the Revs. James Crocker and Charles O'Roark. 
Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites at the grave.

Gladys Fawcett Marshall


Gladys Fawcett Marshall of Arlington died in San Antonio, Texas on March 16.
She was born in Fawcett's Gap in 1923, and was married to John 'Bus' Marshall, a 
former Halifax resident. She worked as a secretary to the Department of the 
Navy.
Survivors include one sister, Emily Fawcett Thrasher of Albuquerque and one 
brother, William S. Fawcett of FL; one son, Robert E. Marshall and fiance', 
Aggie Ballard, of Woodbridge; one daughter, Ellen and husband, John Onderdonk, 
of San Antonio; one granddaughter, Tammy Marenick and husband, Paul, of 
Chesterfield; one grandson, John H. Marshall and wife, Tamie, of Leesburg; and 
three great-grandchildren.
Interment is at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, March 20, at St. John's Episcopal Church in 
Halifax. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at St. 
Michael's Episcopal Church in Arlington.

Larry Darnell Traynham, 48, of 6051 Hunting Creek Road, Nathalie, died March 14 
at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Traynham was born in Halifax County on February 10, 1955, the son of Bertha 
Traynham. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Survivors include his mother of the home; two sisters, Marie Roberts and Ruby 
Bane, both of New Haven, CT; and one brother-in-law, David Roberts of New Haven.

Mrs. Baucom died Tuesday, March 18 at the home of her daughter in New Jersey.
She was 71.
Mrs. Baucom was born in Ashville, N.C., on July 20, 1931 to the late Edward 
Baucom and Bertha Baucom.

S.Darlene Hosterman of Asbury, N.J. and Dawn Kenyon and husband Patrick of

William Sydnor Jr.


William Sydnor Jr., 73, of 2307 Hamilton Blvd., South Boston, died March 17 in 
South Boston.
Mr. Sydnor was born in New York, NY on June 5, 1929, the son of William Sydnor 
Sr. and Annie Nicolas Sydnor. He was a member of St. James Baptist Church, was a 
Navy Veteran and a member of American Legion Post 99.
Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth Sydnor of Jackson, MS, Valarie 
Sydnor of Tuckahoe, NY and Aprel Bolt of Yonkers, NY; two grandchildren; one 
sister, Joan Coleman of Yonkers; one brother, Raymond Sydnor of New York; two 
sisters-in-law, Rosetta Sydnor Jackson of Scottsburg and Hillary Sydnor of New 
York; and a friend, Amanda Bates of South Boston.

Eugene Frederick Venable, 79, of 430 North Main Street, Halifax, died March 17 
at his home.
Mr. Venable was born in Halifax County on January 17, 1924, the son of Willie 
Venable and Tassie Dixon Venable and was married to Lillian Thompson Venable. He 
was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church and was a WWII Army Veteran.
Survivors include one sister, Ruth N. Venable of Jamaica, NY; and two sisters-
in-law, Irene Sawyer and Araminta Goode, both of Halifax.

member of Ephesus Baptist Church.
Survivers include five sons, Micky Conner and wife Ann and Ricky Conner and his 
son Matthew, all of Ringgold, Warren Conner, Wayne Conner and Frank Clay, all of 
Halifax, one daughter, Barbara Newcomb and husband Glenn of Clover, one sister, 
Lucy Conner Wells of Clover, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and a 
special niece, Virginia Wilmoth of Clover.

Mr. Hodges was born in Halifax County on February 2, 1935, the son of Lewis 
Brantley Hodges Sr. and Melinda Murphy Hodges, and was married to Estelle Clay 
Hodges. He was a member of Woodmen of the World.

Thomas Anthony Francis, 65, of 18709 Carter Road, Dinwiddie, died March 24 at

Mr. Francis was born in Halifax County on March 7, 1938, the son of John Massey 
Francis Sr. and Minnie Owen Francis and was married to Mary Long Francis. He was 
a member of Faith Baptist Church in Colonial Heights.
Survivors include his wife; one brother, Owen Francis of Scottsburg; three 
sisters, Agnes Grundman of Jacksonville, FL, Lucille Thompson of Virgilina, and 
Madeline Moorefield of Scottsburg. He was preceded in death by a brother, John 
Massey Francis Jr.

William Berkley Hill, 78, of 1035 Westside Park Drive, South Boston, died 
recently in Philadelphia, PA.
Mr. Hill was born in Halifax County on December 9, 1924, the son of James Thomas 
Hill and Flemetta Bassett Hill. He was a member of Berry Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include one brother, Thomas Easley Hill of Philadelphia; and one 
sister-in-law, Rev. Gwendolyn Hill of P hladelphia.
Funeral services for Mr. Hill will be held today, March 26 at 11 a.m. at Berry

Mardan Omar Hunt


Mardan Omar Hunt, 56, of 514 Greenway Drive, South Boston, died March 23 at 
Hunter-Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center.
Mr. Hunt was born in Clarksville on July 8, 1946, the son of Daniel O'Connell 
Hunt and Margaret Glasscock Hunt and was married to Anne Hazelwood Hunt.
He was a member of South Boston Seventh Day Adventist Church, American Legion 
Post 8 in South Boston and the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Hunt served in

Evington; one brother, Ralph Hunt of Orange; and three sisters, Rose Chandler of 
South Hill, Mary Hunt of South Boston, and Charlotte Harris of Bullock, NC.
Services for Mr. Hunt will be held today, March 26 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral 
Home Chapel with the Rev. Garland Day officiating. Burial will take place in Oak 
Ridge Cemetery with Military Rites.

Henry Edward Woody Sr.


Henry Edward Woody Sr., 76, of 1025 Tuck Trail, Nathalie, died March 23 at his 
home.
Mr. Woody was born in Pittsylvania County on November 24, 1926, the son of 
Howard Woody and Minnie McDowell Woody and was married to Colleen Gregory Woody. 
He was a member of Catawba Baptist Church and was a Veteran of WWII.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn W. Clark and Patricia W. Fields, both 
of Nathalie; one won, Henry E. Woody Jr. of Scottsburg; four grandchildren and 
four great-grandchildren. Mr. Woody was preceded in death by one granddaughter, 
Mary Katherine Woody; and three brothers, Carroll, Leroy and Elmer Woody.
Services will be held today, March 26 at 2 p.m. at Catawba Baptist Church with 
the Revs. Michael O'Shea and Jason Murray officiating. Burial will take place in 
the church cemetery.

Cabell Solomon Murray


Cabell Solomon Murray, 88, of South Boston, formerly of Virgilina, died March 25 
at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Murray was born in Virgilina on December 8, 1914, the son of Cabell Flournoy 
Murray and Emily Belle Tuck Murray and was married to Mary Ellen Clark Murray. 
He was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church in Person County, NC.
Survivors include his wife of South Boston; one daughter, Mildred M. Torian of 
Collinsville; two sons, Cecil Murray of Danville and Garland Murray of 
Chesterfield; six grandchildren, Sam Torian IV of Berryville, Sarah Torian of 
Atlanta, GA, Steve Murray of Mt. Laurel, Ben Murray of San Francisco, CA, John 
Murray and Anne Murray, both of Chesterfield; four great-grandchildren; one 
sister, Ada Shotwell of Virgilina; and one brother, Fraser Murray of Virgilina. 
Mr. Murray was preceded in death by one son, Glenn Murray.
Services will be held tomorrow, March 29, at 2 p.m. at Olive Branch Baptist 
Church with the Rev. Victor Blackwell officiating. Burial will follow in the 
church cemetery.

Dorothy Anne Vaughan Peregoy


Dorothy Anne Vaughan Peregoy, 56, of 2204 Jones Ferry Road, South Boston, died 
March 27 at the V.A. Hospital in Richmond.
Mrs. Peregoy was born in Mecklenburg County on October 4, 1946, the daughter of 
Joseph Lewis Vaughan Sr. and Mary Elliott Vaughan, and was married to James 
Peregoy. She was a retired LPN with The Woodview.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, March 29 at 11 a.m. at Brooks Funeral 
Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Hebron United Church of Christ Cemetery.
Survivors of Mrs. Peregoy include her husband; her father of Nelson; three 
brothers, Joseph L. Vaughan Jr. and his wife, Sue, John Patrick Vaughan and 
wife, Lisa, all of Nelson, and James A. Vaughan and wife, Libby, of Cluster 
Springs; one sister, Judy Bigger and her husband, Alfred of Chase City. She was 
preceded in death by her mother, and one sister, Sara Lucille Vaughan.
The family will receive friends this evening, March 28, from 7:00 until 8:30 at 
Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the home.

Emma Banks Williams, 88, of Halifax, died March 26 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Mrs. Williams was born in Halifax County on August 30, 1914, the daughter of 
Paul and Hallie Long Banks, and was married to Naman Williams.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Williams will be held tomorrow, March 29 at 1 p.m. at 
Dunn & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Halifax with the Rev. R.S. Wimbish

Cornelius Olander Carrington


Funeral services for Mr. Cornelius Olander Carrington will be held at 2 p.m. 
Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at the Mason Chapel Baptist Church.
The Rev. Ronald Claiborne will officiate.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Carrington died Thursday, March 27, at his residence, 284 Witcher Road, 
Ringgold, Va.
He was 58.
Mr. Carrington was born in Halifax County on October 6, 1944 to William 
Carrington and Priscella Hamlett Carrington.
He was married to Rosalyn Harper Carrington and was a member of Mason Chapel 
Baptist Church. He was a former employee of Lorillard, Inc.
Mr. Carrington is survived by his wife, one sister, Clarice Berry of Tampa, Fl., 
one step- daughter, April J. Waller of Danville, one step-grandson, one brother-
in-law, Lloyd Berry of Tampa, Fl., and a host of nieces, nephews, other 
relatives and friends.
The family will recieve friends at Mason Chapel Baptist Church on Monday evening 
from 6-8 p.m., and at all other times at the residence.

James Anthony Kintigos


Mr. James Anthony Kintigos of Old Cluster Springs Road in Halifax County died 
Sunday, March 30, 2003 in his home.
He was 74.
Mr. Kintigos was a retired real estate agent and a veteran of the U.S. Air 
Force.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Raab Kintigos.
Private services for Mr. Kintigos are scheduled.

Martha Cole Link


Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Cole Link will be held at the Mt. Cana United 
Methodist Church on Monday, March 31, at 3 p.m.
The Rev. Randy Holmes will officiate.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Link died Saturday, March 29, at the Halifax Regional Hospital.
She was 83.
Mrs. Link was born in Halifax County on July 6, 1919 to the late Deshazo Cole 
Sr., and the late Maude Hudson Cole. She was a member of the Mt. Cana United 
Methodist Church, and was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy L. Cole and Martha L. Clark, both of 
South Boston, one son, Robert W. Link of South Boston, six grandchildren and two 
great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Link was preceded in death by one son, Lionel Link, three sisters, Lois 
Shelton, Ethel Cole and Virginia Wilson, and one brother, D.S. Cole Jr.

Gloria Jean Medley


Funeral services for Ms. Gloria Jean Medley of Washington, D.C., formerly of 
Scottsburg, will be held at St. James Baptist Church on Thursday, April 3, at 2

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Ms. Medley died March 28 at the Washington Hospital Center.
She was 44.
Ms. Medley was born in Halifax County on September 7, 1958 to the late Sherman 
C. Medley and Mrs. Gertrude Bailey Medley. She was employed by the AFL-CIO.
Ms. Medley is survived by three sisters, Lillian Holt, Pamela Gayles and Paula 
Traynham, all of Scottsburg, one brother, Willie Sherman Medley of the Bronx, 
N.Y., three aunts, Gertrude Bailey of Alexandria, Beulah Edmunds of Sutherlin 
and Josephine Barksdale of Scottsburg, five uncles, Willie G. Bailey of 
Alexandria, Curtis Bailey and Milton Barksdale of Scottsburg, Willie Edmunds of 
Sutherlin and Eldridge Bailey of Roanoke, one brother-in-law, Eddie Holt of 
Scottsburg, one sister-in-law, Anna W. Medley of the Bronx, N.Y., three nieces, 
four nephews and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends, including the 
devoted Dyrell Madison of Washington, D.C., and Tonia Smalls of Scottsburg.

James Edward Morris


James Edward Morris, 34, of 8225 James D. Hagood Highway, Scottsburg, died March 
27 in Mecklenburg County.
Mr. Morris was born in Halifax County on August 31, 1968, the son of Tommy 
Morris and Rose Lane Smiley Compton.
He was a member of Clover Baptist Church and was a U.S. Air Force Veteran.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Tommy Compton, of Scottsburg; his 
father and stepmother, Inez Morris, of Scottsburg; three sons, Tyler, Jordan and 
Alexander Morris; one daughter, Jillian Morris; two sisters, Kimberly Fisher and 
Tina Mocarsky, both of Scottsburg; and his maternal grandmother, Gladys Smiley 
of Clover.
Services for Mr. Morris will be held today, March 31, at 11 a.m. at Clover 
Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the 
Clover Cemetery.

Lee T. Pamplin


Funeral services for Mr. Lee T. Pamplin of College Street in South Boston will 
be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at the Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Coleman Hill Cemetery in Cluster Springs.
Mr. Pamplin died Wednesday, March 26, at his residence.
He was 73.
Mr. Pamplin was born in Halifax County on February 10, 1930 to the late Embro 
Pamplin and Urmy Harris Pamplin.
He was married to Rose Harris Pamplin.
Mr. Pamplin is survived by his wife, three daughters, Lorraine Patterson and 
Cheryl Pamplin, both of South Boston, and Karen Pamplin of New York, three sons, 
Mitchell Pamplin, and Eric Pamplin, both of New York, and George Pamplin of 
Bronx, N.Y., 14 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren, and a host of 
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Boston.
