Annie Compton Conner


Annie Compton Conner, 78, of 6151 Bethel Road, Scottsburg, died May 30 at her home.
Mrs. Conner was born in Halifax County on August 30, 1924, the daughter of Charlie B. Compton and Fannie Chaffin Compton and was married to James Harold
Conner. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where she was a member of the WMU. She was also a member of the Bethel Home Demonstration Club with
the VPI Extension Homemakers.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Mike Conner and wife, Carol of Scottsburg; one daughter, Vanessa Conway and husband, Ray of Walhalla, SC; seven
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Carl Compton of Scottsburg. She was preceded in death by one son, Skip Conner; three brothers and six
sisters.
Services for Mrs. Conner were held June 1 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Tony Brooks conducting the service. Burial followed in the church
cemetery.

Joan Coates Davis


Funeral services will be held at Swicegood Funeral Home in Danville at 11 a.m. today for Joan Coates Davis, 68, of Dry Fork, who died Friday at her residence.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Duane O. Blevins.
Mrs. Davis was born in Halifax County on August 18, 1933, and was the daughter of the late Clem Coates and the late Elsie Shelton Coates.
Mrs. Davis was married to the late Marvin I. Davis, and lived most of her life in Halifax and Danville, where she was a member of Riverview Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son David A. Davis of Dry Fork; two brothers, Leroy Coates and Clarence Coates, both of Halifax; two sisters, Peggy Clark of Nathalie and
Frances Conner of Halifax; and two grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Clem Coates, James Coates and Andrew Coates, and three sisters, Grace Childress, Ada Lloyd and Cathryn Lowery. 
Burial will follow at 1 p.m. today at the Halifax Memorial Gardens.


Albert Kenneth Morris


Albert Kenneth Morris, 78, of 3236 Wilson Road, Virgilina, died May 31 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Morris was born in Halifax County on May 24, 1924, the son of the late Willie Osborne Morris Sr. and Bessie Tuck Morris and was married to Lula W.
Morris. He was a member of Union United Church of Christ where he served as a deacon and was a former member of the Board of Directors. He was a retired
supervisor with Collins & Aikman, retired farmer and was a US Army Veteran.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Waverly L. Morris of Virgilina; three brothers, Henry Morris, Gerald Morris and Franklin, all of Virgilina; two
sisters, Beatrice Buchanan of Clarksville and Barbara Holt of Cluster Springs. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas, Woodrow, Junior and David
Morris.
Services for Mr. Morris were held at Union United Church of Christ on June 2 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Wilburn officiating. Burial was in Virgilina Cemetery.

Mattie Wilkerson Sattlewate
Mrs. Mattie Wilkerson Sattlewate of Philadelphia, Pa., formerly of Halifax County, died May 31 in Philadelphia.
Mrs. Sattlewate was the daughter of the late Richard Wilkerson and Mrs. Rozella Wilkins Wilkerson. 
She was the sister of Mrs. Elsie Strange of South Boston.
Funeral services for Mrs. Sattlewate will be held Friday in Philadelphia.


Luther William Stephens


Funeral services for Mr. Luther William Stephens, 89, of Java will be held Saturday, June 8 at 11 a.m. at the County Line Baptist Church.
The Pastor Otis R. Dillard will conduct the services.
Burial will take place in the church cemetery. 
Mr. Stephens died Saturday in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Pittsylvania County on September 15, 1912.
Mr. Stephens was the son of the late Robert William Stephens and the late Mae Ella Chambers Stephens.
He was married to the late Mildred Dixon Stephens.
Mr. Stephens was a member of the County Line Baptist Church.
He is survived by three daughters, Ms. Betty Jones of Lynchburg, Mrs. Julia Frances Berkley of Vernon Hill and Ms. Clarine Stephens of Washington, D.C., and
one son, Mr. John Robert Stephens of Capital Heights, Md.
He is also survived one brother, Mr. Joseph Stephens of Nathalie, one sister, Mrs. Lillie Terry of Philadelphia, Pa., and by eight grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren. 
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and other times at the home of Mrs. Julia Frances Berkley, 4242 Ridgeway Road in Vernon Hill.

William Edward Gupton


William Edward Gupton, 78, died Wednesday, May 29, at his home in Oceanside, CA. A native of Halifax County, he was born June 14, 1923, in the Aarons
Creek community. He was the son of the late Eugene Graham Gupton Sr. and Nora Royster Gupton. 
Mr. Gupton is survived by his wife, Anita Ramsay Gupton of the home; a son, Dr. Michael Edward Gupton and his wife, Joy of Clarksville; a daughter, Cindy
Gupton Strong and husband, Bob of Myrtle Beach, SC; three step children, Jack Ramsay of Los Angeles, CA, Calvin Ramsay of Seattle, WA and Linda Ramsay
of Oceanside, CA; two grandchildren, Jennifer Fesperman of Seattle, WA and Christopher Fesperman of CA; three step-grandchildren, Kady and Bryce Ramsay
of Seattle, and Raymond Gonzalez of Oceanside; three sisters, Virginia G. Wilson of Virgilina, Gladys G. Thompson of Richmond, and Helen G. Bomar of South
Boston; two brothers, Prentice V. Gupton and Bobby J. Gupton, both of Clarksville; and a number of nieces and nephews survive. He was preceded in death by his
brothers, Eugene G. Gupton Jr., Douglas R. Gupton and Wallace H. Gupton and his sister, Ruby G. Overbey.
Mr. Gupton was a member of Aarons Creek Baptist Church in Virgilina, was a World War II veteran, having served with the U. S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre. He
was active in Boy Scouts of America in the Los Angeles area where he served as a leader for the Explorers as well as Boy Scouts. He was a retired businessman in
California.
A memorial service will be held at Aarons Creek Baptist Church, Virgilina, on June 15, at 2:30 p.m.

Willie Thomas Francis


Willie Thomas Francis, 61, of Nathalie died June 2 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home.
Mr. Francis was born in Halifax County on June 6, 1940, the son of John Thomas Francis and Ella Pierce Francis. He served in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include one son, Willie Thomas Francis Jr. of Halifax; one grandson, Holden Thomas Francis of Halifax; six brothers, Paul J. Francis of Brookneal, Vanda
Lee Francis of Gastonia, NC, Howard B. Francis, Glenn M. Francis, Stanley C. Francis and David L. Francis, all of Nathalie; four sisters, Ann Francis Butler of
Halifax, Vernell Francis Ford of Davidson, NC, Donna M. Owen of Danville and Judy Faye Elder of Brookneal.
Services for Mr. Francis will be held today, June 5 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will take place in
Halifax Memorial Gardens.


Eleanor Reagan Cannon


Eleanor Reagan Cannon, 87, of 2526 North Main Street, Danville, died June 2 in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Mrs. Cannon was born in Glens Falls, NY on August 16, 1914, the daughter of the late Henry T. Reagan and Ella Roussea Reagan and was married to John
Thomas Cannon. She was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include four daughters, Gina Mallare and Joannie Sheldon, both of Danville, Joyce Prichard of Selkirk, NY and Judy Kobrin of Boca Raton, FL; two
sons, John R. Cannon of South Boston and Thomas Cannon of Balston Spa, NY; 25 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one
sister, Charlotte Reagan, and her husband.
A funeral service for Mrs. Cannon was held June 4 at 10 a.m. at the Funeral Liturgy at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Charles Breindel officiating. Burial
will take place in Glens Falls.

Rosa Conner Hancock


Rosa Conner Hancock, 87, of 1058 Shepherd's Gate Road, South Boston, died June 4 in Richmond.
Mrs. Hancock was born in Halifax County on March 9, 1915, the daughter of Holt Easley Conner and Daisy Powell Conner. She was a member of Glenwood
United Methodist Church and a retired employee of Star Laundry.
Survivors include two daughters, Alice Tucker of Douglasville, GA and Alice Tucker of Richmond; one son, Hubert Trent of Saxe; one sister, Lucille Moore of
South Boston; one brother, Emery Conner of South Boston; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hancock will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel June 6 at 11 p.m. with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will take place in
Oak Ridge Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening, June 5, from 7:00 until 9:00, and other times at her home.

Josephine Jones Moneymaker


Josephine Jones Moneymaker, 79, of 2011 Snow Hill Road, Alton, died June 9 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Moneymaker was born in Halifax County on January 14, 1923, the daughter of George Washington Jones and Roddie Douglas Jones and was married to
Clarence Alexandria Money. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, William Tucker Moneymaker of South Boston and Tom Moneymaker of Alton; one daughter, Susie Moneymaker Turner of Halifax;
special niece, Pat Martin of Cluster Springs; one brother, A.B. Jones Sr. of South Boston; four grandchildren, Michael Scott Turner of Halifax, and Emily, Erica and
Eliana Moneymaker, all of Alton. Mrs. Moneymaker was preceded in death by two brothers, George Hampton Jones and Andrew Frank Jones; and one sister,
Virginia Jones.
Services for Mrs. Moneymaker will be held today, June 12 at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Frakes officiating. Burial will take place
in Halifax Memorial Gardens.


Pauline Beach Werner


Pauline Beach Werner, 85, of 103 Rosehill Drive, South Boston, formerly of Keeling, died June 9 at The Woodview.
Mrs. Werner was born in Camden, NJ on February 26, 1917, the daughter of the late Henry Mervin Beach and Emma Louisa Scythes Beach and was married to
the late Francis V. Werner. She was a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Robin Stayton of Reno, NV; and one grandson, James Swain of Ringgold. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Dr.
Leslie Beach.
Funeral services for Mrs. Werner were held June 11 at 11 a.m. at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Thomas Setliff officiating. Burial was in
Fernwood Cemetery in Bridgeton, NJ.

'Brud' Eric Gordon Moorefield, 80, of 1012 Whitlow Trail, South Boston, died June 9 at his home.
Mr. Moorefield was born in Halifax County on April 14, 1922, the son of the late Willie T. and Allie Blanche Moorefield. He was a member of Friendship Baptist
Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Jo M. Davis of South Boston, Martha W. Moorefield of Scottsburg and Dorothy M. Conner of Mt. Laurel; one brother-in-law,
Walter A. Davis of South Boston; six nieces, Nancy Hill, Sheila Henry, Tammy Fitch, Krista Conner, Teresa Seamster and Debbie Hite; four nephews, Marty
Davis, Phil Davis, Dale Conner and Chris Conner; five great-nieces, Sarah Henry, Meagan Fitch, Jennifer Laughorn, Allie Conner, and Emily Conner; six
great-nephews, Sean Davis, Jeff Hill, Travis Whitt, Nathan Henry, Zachary Davis and Chase Conner. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Willie 'Doc'
Moorefield, John Moorefield and Arney Moorefield; and two sisters, Lena M. Davis and Kathleen Moorefield.
Graveside services for Mr. Moorefield will be held today, June 12 at 11 a.m. at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ed Fullenwider officiating.

Nannie Jones Pulliam


Nannie Jones Pulliam, 82, of 1029 Crestview Trail, South Boston, died June 10 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Pulliam was born in Halifax County on May 21, 1920, the daughter of the late Lewis Oliver Jones and Virginia Trickey Jones and was married to the late
Clifton Junior Pulliam. She was a member of Glenwood United Methodist Church and was a retired waitress at Crestview Restaurant.
Survivors include three daughters, Lajanice 'Top' Morris and her husband, Riley, Hope Keatts and her husband, Stuart, all of South Boston and Mary Jane
Stembridge and husband, Johnnie Jr., of Red Oak; one sister, Lena Long of Birmingham, AL; one sister-in-law, Reva Jones of South Boston; one brother-in-law,
Giles 'Red' Hancock of Highland Springs; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
Services for Mrs. Pulliam will be held at Glenwood UM Church tomorrow, June 13 at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Michael Teixeira and Raymond Bucklew officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening at Brooks Funeral Home from 7:00 until 8:30 and other times at the home.

Joseph Wallace Easley


Joseph Wallace Easley, 73, of Nathalie, died June 9 at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Mr. Easley was born in Halifax County on May 18, 1929, the son of the late Estelle Dawson and the late Johnnie Easley.
Survivors include one brother, the Rev. Silas Easley of Nathalie; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Easley will be held tomorrow, June 15, at 1 p.m. at Banister Hill CME Church in Nathalie with the Rev. Francis Coates officiating. Burial
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of Ruby Easley Chism, 1013 Trinity Trail, Halifax.

Walter Dewey 'Giles' Sneed


Walter Dewey 'Giles' Sneed, 81, of 205 Merritt Street, South Boston, died June 14 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Sneed was born in Halifax County on June 15, 1920, the son of Arthur Manley Sneed and Mattie Cully Sneed and was married to Frances Evelyn Dance
Sneed. He was a member of Faulkner Memorial Masonic Lodge #91 in South Boston, a Shriner, a Veteran of WWII, and guarded the Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sandra C. Murphy of Binghamton, NY and Wanda S. Ulsaker of Wilmington, DE; four grandchildren, Kelly Russo and
Shannon Murphy of Binghamton, Grace Ulsaker and Sean Ulsaker of Wilmington; two great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Madelyn Russo of Binghamton; four
brothers, Chester Sneed of Nathalie, John Sneed and Eugene 'Dink' Sneed, both of South Boston and Richard Sneed of Fayetteville, NC; one sister, Ruby Watts of
South Boston.
Services for Mr. Sneed will be held today, June 17, at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Wilder officiating. Burial will take place in Halifax
Memorial Gardens with Military Rites.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.


J.L. King


J.L. King, 59, of Gibsonville, NC, died June 13 at his home. 
A native of Pittsylvania County, he was the husband of Sandra 'Sandy' Turner King and son of the late Robert Christopher and Lillie Mae Doss King. 
Mr. King was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, a member of the American Legion, DAV and a Life member of the VFW. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Lisa Glore of Cornelia, GA, Tammy Barton of Ellenwood, GA and Tina Whited of Stockbridge, GA; six grandchildren;
brothers, Hermon King and Roger L. King, both of Gretna, Roy L. King of Halifax, Burke King of Nathalie and Jim King of Decator, GA; sisters, Virginia Hanes of
Lexington, NC, Virgie Marsh of High Point, NC, Susie Waller of Bedford and Emma Thornton of Christiansburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister,
Irene Barbour; and two brothers, Hoover King and Charles C. King.
Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. June 15 at Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. Ernest Beck.

James Harold Conner


Funeral services for James Harold Conner, 80, of Scottsburg, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church.
The Rev. Dr. Tony Brooks will conduct the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Conner died Saturday at Halifax Regional Hospital.
A Halifax County native, he was born July 6, 1921, a son of Luther T. Conner and Mrs. Annie Blount Conner. He was married to Annie Compton Conner.
Mr. Conner was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church where he was a lifetime deacon and former Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Bethel
Ruritan Club.
He was a World War II Army veteran and received two Purple Hearts.
Mr. Conner is survived by one son, Mike Conner, and his wife Carol of Scottsburg, one daughter, Vanessa Conway, and husband Ray of Walhalla, South Carolina,
seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and one brother-in-law, Carl Compton, of Scottsburg.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Compton Conner, one son, Skip Conner, three sisters and five brothers.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Monday from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m., and at other times at his home, 6151 Bethel Road, Scottsburg.

Mrs. Blanche Poole Wilson


Blanche Poole Wilson, 78, of Virgilina, died Saturday at Avante of Lynchburg.
A funeral service will be held today at Shady Grove United Methodist Church at 11 a.m.
The Rev. Don Davidson will conduct the Monday service. Burial will be in Shady Grove U.M.C. Cemetery in Virgilina.
A native of Person County, North Carolina, Mrs. Wilson was born December 18, 1923, a daughter of the late Thomas Lennie Poole and Patty Rudder Poole
Harris. She was married to the late Woodrow Samuel Wilson Sr.
Mrs. Wilson was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church where she was a past member of the board of directors.
She was a Cub Scout (Pack 401) and Boy Scout den mother, a volunteer assistant librarian at Cluster Springs Elementary School and she managed a tobacco and
grain farm.
Mrs. Wilson was an avid gardener and nature lover, and was very active in her church and community.
She was a retired sales associate with Leggett Department Store, where she worked 23 years.
Mrs. Wilson is survived by two daughters, Peggi W. Vance and her husband, Sanford, of Virginia Beach, and Judy W. Trader and her husband Chad of Concord,
North Carolina; one son, Woodrow "Woody" S. Wilson III, and his wife Betsy of Amherst; three sisters, Rosa Whitlow of Virgilina, Mary Knott of Roxboro,
North Carolina, and Jeannie Cheesmon of Glendale, California; and two brothers, Leamon Poole and Victor Poole, both of Roxboro, North Carolina. 
Other survivors include three grandsons and two granddaughters. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Jean W. Vaughan, and two sisters.


Gerald Louis Crews


Gerald Louis Crews, 56, of Rockville, will be buried Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Republican Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street, in Glen Allen.
Mr. Crews was an electrician for Union Local 666.
Survivors include his son Clinton T. Crews of Henrico County, a daughter, Katie Crews Simpson, also of Henrico County, his mother, Emma Francis Crews, of
Nathalie, three brothers, Marshall C. Crews of Brookneal, James E. Crews of South Boston and Phillip S. Crews of Statesville, North Carolina, and his sister,
Mary Crews Gillian of Hillsborough, North Carolina, two grandchildren, and his fiancee Linda Gail Wilson of Rockville. 
He was preceded in death by his father, Stanford Crews, and his step-father, L. Clinton Crews.
Memorials may be made to the Rockville Fire Department, Co. # 9, or to the Goochland Fire and Rescue Squad Co. #3.

Mary Frances Powell Crafford


Mary Frances Powell Crafford died June 15 at the Village at St. Edward's, independent living facility, in Fairlawn, Ohio.
Mrs. Crafford was the daughter of the late William and Nannie Pat Powell and was married to the late William A. Crafford Sr. She was a quintessential antique
dealer.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. William A. Crafford and wife, Christine of Wilmington, NC and Thomas C. Crafford and wife, Elizabeth of Anchorage, AK; four
grandsons, Billy, Chad, Matthew and Drew of wilmington; and dear friends, Peggy Joe and Reid Whitman of Peninsula. She was also preceded in death by two
sisters, Nettie Halliday and Helen Williams; and five brothers, Roy, Fleet, Harry, Frank and Early Powell, all originally from South Boston.
Services for Mrs. Crafford will be held June 21 at 11 a.m. at Dunn-Quigley Ciriello & Carr Fairlawn Chapel in Fairlawn with the Rev. Mark Frey officiating. Private
burial will take place at Moore's Chapel Cemetery in Bath, Ohio.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 Thursday evening at the funeral home.

William Thomas Martin


William Thomas Martin, 80, of 309 Merritt Street, South Boston, died June 17 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Martin was born in Halifax County on February 12, 1922, the son of the late Felix D. Martin and the late Mary Powell Martin and was married to Chrystine
Coates Martin. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Millstone, was an Army Air Force Veteran of WWII, was a POW in Normandy, was a survivor of the
Grostychow Death March, received four bronze stars, a POW Metal and an Air Metal. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 8.

Josephine Jones Moneymaker


Josephine Jones Moneymaker, 79, of 2011 Snow Hill Road, Alton, died June 9 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Moneymaker was born in Halifax County on January 14, 1923, the daughter of George Washington Jones and Roddie Douglas Jones and was married to
Clarence Moneymaker. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, William Tucker Moneymaker of South Boston and Tom Moneymaker of Alton; one daughter, Susie Moneymaker Turner of Halifax;
special niece, Pat Martin of Cluster Springs; one brother, A.B. Jones Sr. of South Boston; four grandchildren, Michael Scott Turner of Halifax, and Emily, Erica and
Eliana Moneymaker, all of Alton. Mrs. Moneymaker was preceded in death by two brothers, George Hampton Jones and Andrew Frank Jones; and one sister,
Virginia Jones.
Services for Mrs. Moneymaker were held today, June 12 at 11 a.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Frakes officiating. Burial took place in
Halifax Memorial Gardens.


James Nathaniel Owen


James Nathaniel Owen of Salem, died June 12.
Mr. Owen was born May 17, 1929, the son of the late Hatcher and Rena Hughes Owen and was married to Janie Sue 'Polly' Wade Owen. He was a Halifax
County native, and was a member of Salem Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Terri Deitz and husband Dutch; one son, Larry and wife, Cathy; two granddaughters, all of Salem; one brother, Jesse
Owen of Emporia; two sisters, Bessie O. Simmons of Greensboro, NC and Julia O. Jones of Halifax. 
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Owen of Alton and the Rev. John O. Owen of Greensboro; and a sister, Gertrude Owen of Halifax.


Louvinia Dabbs Terrell


Louvinia Dabbs Terrell of Richmond, formerly of Scottsburg, died June 16 in Richmond.
Mrs. Terrell is survived by three daughters, Dollie M. Terrell, Dorothy T. Faulkner and Carolyn Gilmore; two sons, Robert L. Terrell Jr. and James E. Terrell; nine
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fannie Dean and Juanita Womack; and one brother, Joe N. Dabbs.
Funeral services for Mrs. Terrell will be held June 21 at 11 a.m. at Fifth Baptist Church in Richmond with the Dr. Earl M. Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Oak

James B. Younger


James B. Younger, 84, of Vernon Hill, died June 16 at the Richmond Community Hospital.
Mr. Younger was born in Halifax County on July 21, 1917, the son of the late Frank Younger and the late Estelle Rone Younger and was married to Ellen Leigh
Younger. He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; his children, Thomas E. Younger of Jessup, MD, Thelma Watford of Brooklyn, NY, Ellen Watson of Oxon Hill, MD, J. Yolanda Davis
of Richmond, and Kenneth J. Younger of Beltsville, MD; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; seven sisters and one brother.
Funeral services for Mr. Younger will be held June 20 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul CME Church with the Rev. Sam Leigh officiating. Burial will take place in the church
cemetery.

Stella Hubbard Crowder, 90, of Nathalie, died June 14 at Berry Hill Nursing Home.
Mrs. Crowder was born in Halifax County on September 30, 1911.
Survivors include two sons, Algie Crowder and Steve Crowder, both of South Boston; and one sister, Mary Walters of Nathalie.

Doris Puryear Marks


Doris Puryear Marks, 64, of 2300 Heron Place, Lynchburg, died June 20 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Mrs. Marks was born in Halifax County on November 6, 1937, the daughter of the late Wilson Peyton Puryear and the late Mary Wilborn Puryear and was
married to Bernard 'Bunny' Marks. 
She was a member of Peakland United Methodist Church and Oakwood Country Club, was a charter member of the Hospital Auxiliary in Lock Haven, PA, and
served for a time as president of the Women's Golf Association at Clinton Country Club. 
Mrs. Marks graduated from Halifax County High School, attended Mars Hill College and received a B.S. in Elementary Education from Longwood College in
1960. She taught school for several years.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Lt. D. Wilson Marks of the United States Navy; two sisters, Nell P. Hudson of Virgilina and Betty P. Caldwell of South
Boston; four brothers, J.T. Puryear of Virgilina, Phil Puryear of South Boston, Lindy Puryear and Jerry Puryear, both of Roxboro, NC; and one granddaughter,
Anna Elizabeth Marks.
Funeral services for Mrs. Marks will be held June 22 at 2 p.m. at North Fork Baptist Church, Virgilina at 2 p.m. The Rev. Robert M. Fox Jr. will officiate. Burial
will follow in the church cemetery.

William Thomas Martin


William Thomas Martin, 80, of 309 Merritt Street, South Boston, died June 17 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mr. Martin was born in Halifax County on February 12, 1922, the son of the late Felix D. Martin and the late Mary Powell Martin and was married to Chrystine
Coates Martin. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Millstone, was an Army Air Force Veteran of WWII, was a POW in Normandy, was a survivor of the
Grostychow Death March, received four bronze stars, a POW Metal and an Air Metal. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 8.
Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Essie M. Wade of South Boston and Hallie M. Puckett of Nathalie; one granddaughter, Amanda Stone of Oak Ridge, TN.;
and one son-in-law, Gary Stone of Oak Ridge. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois M. Stone.
Services for Mr. Martin were held June 19 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Watts conducting the service. Burial followed in the First

Sheila Betts Morton


Sheila Betts Morton, 53, of 403 Rosser Avenue, South Boston, died June 20 at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Morton was born in Halifax County on December 26, 1948, the daughter of Bishop Harry W. Betts and Gracie Anderson Betts and was married to John
Nathaniel Morton. She was a member of St. Luke Apostle Church.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Melissa Boxley of New York and Danisha Morton of South Boston; one son, Lamont Thomas of South Boston; her
parents; and two brothers, Charlie Betts and Elder Harry J. Betts, both of South Boston.

NC; one daughter, Jennifer Nicole Cochran of Pelham; one stepson, Donald Carter Rickman Jr. of Halifax; one stepdaughter, Catlin Rickman of Halifax; one
brother, Randall Wayne Stophel of Ruffin; one stepbrother, Freddie Kirkman of Ringgold; two sisters, Dale Stophel LaValley of North Haverhill, NH and DeLena
Kirkman Davis of Pelham. She was the granddaughter of the late Pearl Slaydon.

Donald Carter Rickman, 41, of 1217 Oak Level Road, Halifax, died June 18.
Mr. Rickman was born in Halifax County on June 14, 1961, the son of Billy Ronald Rickman and Mary Lou Carter Rickman and was married to Juanita Kirkman
Rickman. He was a member of Oak Level Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his parents of Halifax; one daughter, Catlin Denise Rickman of Halifax; one son, Donald Carter Rickman Jr. of Halifax; four sisters, Mary Ellen
Lowery and husband, Dan, Patricia R. Stevens and husband Mike, all of South Boston, Deborah R. Glover and husband, Wash of Clover, and Janet R. Lacks and
husband, Wally of Twenty Nine Palms, CA; one brother, Ronald L. Rickman and wife, Sharon of Alton; also survived by Gayle Crews Rickman and Wendy
Beadles, both of Nathalie. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Loraine and Ellen Rickman of Nathalie and William and Lea Carter of Roanoke.

Mrs. Smith was born January 3, 1921, in Rockingham County, NC, a daughter of the late Richard Manuel and the late Sarah Dalton Manuel. She was retired from
Baxter Kelly Foust with 25 years service and was a member of Beaver Island Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Geneva Zilinsky and husband, Tom of Honolulu, HI; one son, the Rev. James Luther Smith and wife, Joyce of Buffalo Junction; one

Graveside services for Charles Pleasant Henderson, 76, of Lakeside Drive, Halifax will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Henderson died Sunday at Somerset.
He was born in Drewey's Bluff on September 1, 1925, a son of Hubert Howell Henderson and Mrs. Annie Dunn Henderson, and was married to Marion Dance
Henderson.
He was a World War II Army veteran and of the Presbyterian faith.
Mr. Henderson is survived by his wife, Marion Dance Henderson, of Halifax; one daughter, Carolyn Henderson, of Halifax; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Lebsack of
Oak Level and Mrs. Margaret Dorman of Charlottesville; one brother, Hubert H. Henderson, of Richmond; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one son, Chuck Henderson, and two sisters, Ruth Hodnett and Nancy Gee.

Estelle Cumby Tate


Estelle Cumby Tate, 94, died Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Northside Baptist Church in Mechanicsville, with interment at 3:30 p.m. in Oak Ridge Cemetery in South
Boston.
The family will receive friends Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Reid Funeral Home in Ashland.
Mrs. Tate was a daughter of the late Lewis Edward and Lutye Carden Anderson.
Her first husband of 45 years, James Booker Cumby, and her second husband of 15 years, Lawrence Haley Tate, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter, Jane Cumby McAlexander, and her husband, Calvin, of Ashland; a step daughter, Hilda Tate Wood, of Falls Church; one sister,
Lillian A. Taylor, of LaCrosse; one sister-in-law, Myra A. Anderson, of South Boston; four grandchildren, two step grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a niece,
nephews and many devoted friends.
Before moving to Richmond, she was a member of Dan River Baptist Church in Halifax County, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and Royal
Ambassador Leader.
Moving to Richmond in the late 1930s, she joined Northside Baptist Church, where she worshipped and served for over 50 years.
She was an Honorary Deacon, a Training Union director, Sunday School Teacher and WMU leader when the church was in Highland Park, and later when the
membership moved to its present location on Studley Road in Mechanicsville.
Mrs. Tate worked for many years as a bridal consultant for a store in Richmond.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Holly Chapter 11, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Maynard Lee Chandler


Maynard Lee Chandler, 63, of Clarksville, died June 24 at his home.
Mr. Chandler was married to Anita Johnson Chandler, was a graduate of Bluestone High school, class of 1957, was a member of Gravel Hill Baptist Church where
he served on the Board of Deacons and was a past chairman. 
He was a former member of Bethel Baptist Church in Skipwith, was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 119, and ACCA Temple Shriners. In 1985 he founded and
served as a partner in Atlantic Medical, Inc. He retired in 2000. Mr. Chandler was captain of Chase City Rescue Squad for 10 years and was Life and Charter
member.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. June 27 at Bethel Baptist Church, with Masonic Committal Rites following.
Survivors of Mr. Chandler in addition to his wife, include a son and daughter-in-law, James Allen and Dolly Chandler of Clarksville; a daughter and son-in-law,
Renee and Todd Hamlett of Fredericksburg; four grandchildren, Chad Chandler, Sean, Brandon and Aisley Hamlett; two sisters-in-law, Wanda Chandler and

Jerry Wayne Dean, 46, of 207B East Tenth Street, Richmond,Va., died June 25, 2002 at his home.

Born August 8, 1955 in Elwood, Indiana, Mr. Dean was the son of the late Alva Wayne Dean and Patricia "Patty" Baugher Dean of South Boston.
Mr. Dean was employed as a computer technician at the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
He was a member of Community Baptist Church in Richmond, and served as a volunteer with Good Samaritan of Richmond.
Survivors include his mother; two daughters, Tara Gretchen Dean and Melissa Opal Dean, both of Richmond; three sisters, Cindy Throckmorton and her husband,
David Throckmorton, of Scottsburg, Diana Cole and her husband, Danny Cole, of Virgilina, and Jenny Knutti and her husband, Bob Knutti, of South Boston and
one brother, Tommy Dean, and his wife, Elaine Dean, of Scottsburg.
Six nieces and one nephew also survive.


Annie Laura Ewell


Annie Laura Ewell, 86, of Nathalie, died June 20 at the Woodview Nursing Home.
She is survived by four sisters, Rosa B. West and Edmonia E. Bailey, both of Richmond, Emma E. Brown of Clover and Lou Ella Jennings of Nathalie.

Billie Dodson Myers


Billie Dodson Myers, 79, of 412 Ellyson Avenue, South Boston, died June 25 at her home.
Mrs. Myers was born in Pittsylvania County on October 23, 1922, the daughter of the late Roy Wister Dodson and the late Myrtie Owen Dodson. She was a
member of Seven Oaks Baptist Church, and was retired from J.P. Stevens.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Wayne Myers of Forest and David Raye Myers of South Boston; one daughter, Linda M. Burgett of South Boston; two sisters,
Cecil Blair of Danville and Mary Ola Marshall of Crownsville, MD; three brothers, Mitchell Dodson of Semora, NC, Glen Dodson and Vernon Dodson, both of
Yanceyville, NC; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Myers was preceded in death by two sisters, Pattie Clark and Nelsie Taylor; and four
brothers, Buster, Alexander, Roger and Newman Dodson.

James Archer Saunders Jr., 70, of Richmond, died Sunday, June 23.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dale Harman Saunders; four children, James Archer Saunders III, Julian Harman Saunders, Dale Harrison (DeeDee)
Saunders White and Samuel Philip Goodloe Saunders; six grandchildren; two sisters, Maryanne Saunders McElroy and Elizabeth Saunders Miller. 
Mr. Saunders attended VMI in the class of 1955. He was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church; an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving in Korea as a
member of the Combat Engineers; a member of the Mathew's Yacht Club; and a retired contractor. 
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 26, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.

Harold Bradcher Brogden, 72, of 1404 Moore Street, South Boston, died June 25 in the V.A. Hospital in Salem.
Mr. Brogden was born in Granville County, NC on March 27, 1930, the son of Early P. Brogden and Mary Bell Cash Brogden and was married to Ophelia Wilson
Brogden. 
He was a member of Florence Avenue Baptist Church, a member of American Legion Post 8, the Disabled Veterans, a former member of Virgilina Vol. Fire Dept.
and the South Boston-Halifax County Museum. Mr. Brogden was a retired truck driver with A.E. Morris Trucking and was an Army Veteran.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Joy Brogden Butler and husband, Raymond of South Boston; one son, Ricky A. Brogden and wife, Sharon of
South Boston; one sister, Margaret Humphries of Oxford, NC; three granddaughters, Karen Lee Butler, Elisabeth Cayce Brogden and Sarah Bliss Brogden; and
three grandsons, Raymond Allen Butler, Nicholas Brian Butler and Shane Allen Brogden.

of Ferry Street, South Boston.
Survivors of Miss Jackson include three sons, Stanley Jackson, Shelton Jackson and Chris Lofton, all of Washington, DC; five grandchildren; three sisters, Celeste
Holt of South Boston, Ann Shorter of VA, and Ruby Overby of Landover.

Funeral services for Mr. Yancey will be held June 29 at 2 p.m. at Mayo Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Winfree officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar
Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Roxboro.
The family is receiving friends at the home of Madeline Yancey Wilkerson, 1051 Clarksville Road, Virgilina.
