BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. – Norman M. Barker, 76, of 285 Ferndale Drive, died
Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at his home.

Born July 23, 1928, in Bristol Tennessee, he was a son of the late Millard Lewis
and Eunice Morgan Barker, and the husband of Peggy June Davenport Barker. Mr.
Barker was retired from Teamsters after 45 years of service and as a dispatcher
at Sparta Bus. He was a member of Gateway Baptist Church and a former member of
Carlisle Wesleyan Church for over 20 years, where he served as deacon, usher and
Sunday School superintendent for many years. He was past master of Springdale
Lodge 430 in West Columbia, a past patron of the Cayce OES Chapter 206, a member
of the Hejaz Shrine, a 32nd Degree Mason and a lifelong musician. He was a U.S.
Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Jim Smith of Lexington,
S.C., Paul M. Barker and his wife Angie of Boiling Springs and Tommy D. Barker
of Charleston, S.C.; a daughter, Terri Smith Wilkinson and her husband Ken of
Charleston; seven grandchildren, Kyle and Maggie Smith, both of Lexington,
Ashley Wilkinson of Brunswick, Ga., Tra Wilkinson of Moore, S.C., and Blythe,
Brett and Jade Barker, all of Boiling Springs; a sister, Paula Millard of
Bristol Tennessee; a brother, Wayne White of San Angelo, Texas; a stepsister,
Virginia Justus of Bristol Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at Floyd’s Boiling Springs
Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at
Floyd’s Boiling Springs Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ray K. Stuart and the Rev.
Michael Stepp. Burial will be in Celestial Memorial Gardens, West Columbia, S.C.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carlisle Wesleyan Church Building
Fund, P.O. Box 16025, Boiling Springs, SC 29316; or to Gateway Baptist Church
Missions, P O. Box 160086, Boiling Springs, SC 29316. The family is at the home.

David Eugene Cowan

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The funeral service for David Eugene Cowan will be conducted at
1 p.m. Thursday in the Mausoleum Chapel in Glenwood Cemetery, with the Rev.
Dewey Williams and Rev. Bryan Read officiating. Interment will follow. Honorary
pallbearers will be Stevie Calhoun, Bill Trainham, Phil Cowan, Tony Cowan, Jacob

David Eugene Cowan, age 49, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, in the Mountain City

Gussie L. Farmer

LEBANON – Gussie L. Farmer, 74, died Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, in the Maple Grove
Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 14, 1930, in Russell County, a daughter of the late George Thomas
Mutter and the late Era Cox Mutter, she was the wife of the late James Fletcher
Farmer. She was a member of the Lebanon Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday
School teacher for 35 years. In addition to her parents and husband, she was
preceded in death by her half-brothers and sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Doris Farmer Stoughton and husband Dr. John R.
Stoughton, Holland, Mich.; three sons, James C. Farmer and wife Catherine B.
Farmer, Beaufort, S.C., Greg Farmer and wife Linda Farmer, Raleigh, N.C., and
Bobby Farmer and wife Anita Farmer, Lebanon; seven grandchildren, Mike
Stoughton, Catherine Creely, Jennifer Farmer, Nathan Farmer, Elizabeth Farmer,
Meredith Farmer and Anna Farmer; also three great-grandchildren; two brothers,
George Mutter and wife June Mutter, Belfast, and Lloyd Mutter and wife Lorena
Mutter, Pearisburg; also several nieces and nephews.

The family extends special thanks to her caregivers, Jo Anne Stinson and Mary
Lou Stinson and to the staff of Maple Grove Health Care Center.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, in the
Lebanon Baptist Church, with Rev. Tom Edwards, pastor of the church,
officiating. Burial will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will
be Carter Mutter, Harold Mutter, Wesley Mutter, Marty Howington, Thomas
Howington, Johnny Mutter, Danny Godbey and Jerry Slate. The family will receive
friends after 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at the funeral home. In lieu of

Roy Bill Fleming

COEBURN – Roy Bill Fleming, age 76, died at Johnson City Medical Center on
Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004.

Born in Dickenson County, he had lived in Coeburn for the past 31 years and was
a self-employed truck driver. His parents, Luther and Bertha Willis Fleming;
sons, Billy Carrol and Joseph Fleming; daughter, Karen Fleming; and brothers,
Hershel, Ferrel Burns and Kermin Fleming, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Madge Yates Fleming, Coeburn; three sons, Bobby
Fleming, Clintwood, Jeff Fleming, Pound, and James Fleming, Wise; three
daughters, Catherine Large, Coeburn, Janet Mullins, Clintwood and Laverne
Mitchell, Nora; two sisters, Evon Branham, Clintwood, and Evelyn Eney, Cut Bank,
Mont.; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Roy Bill Fleming will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct.
15, 2004, from the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel, with Minister Terry W. Price
officiating. Burial will follow in the Fleming Cemetery, Route 3, Clintwood. The
family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Thursday, with a song service to follow
at 7 p.m. Pallbearers are grandsons.

David L. Henderson

HALIFAX, Va. – Mr. David Lawson Henderson of 2180 Love Shop Road, died Tuesday,
Oct. 12, 2004, at his home.

He was born in Halifax County, Va., April 3, 1919, and was 85 years of age. He
was the son of Letcher David Henderson and Ola Amanda James Henderson and was
married to the late Mary Louise Puryear Henderson. He was a member of Oak Level
Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by three daughters, Shirley Elliott and husband Lafell of
Halifax, Margaret Elliott and husband Kennerly of Halifax and Mary Elizabeth
Henderson and fiancé, Chuck Morgan of Bristol Virginia; one sister-in-law, Raye
Henderson of Vernon Hill, Va.; three grandchildren, Scottie Elliott of Halifax,
David Elliott of Halifax and Alice Bond and husband Rev. Michael Bond of Durham,
N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Reuben Bond of Durham and Ryan Bond of
Durham.

A funeral service for Mr. David Lawson Henderson will be held Thursday, Oct. 14,
2004, at 11 a.m. at Oak Level Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David
Kilpatrick and the Rev. Michael Bond officiating. Burial will follow in the
church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 until 8 p.m.
at Powell Funeral Home and other times at his home. For memorials, please
consider the Oak Level Presbyterian Church.

William Kinsley Sr.

ABINGDON – William Curtis Kinsley Sr., age 77, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, in
Grace Health Care, Abingdon.

He was born in Abingdon, then moved to Pennsylvania. He moved back to Abingdon
in 1974. He was of the Methodist faith. He was the son of the late Noah Lee
Kinsley and the late Elizabeth Simmons Kinsley. He was a Tec 5th Grade in the
U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Disabled American
Veterans, James E. Peters Chapter 57 and the VFW Abingdon Memorial Post 1994. He
was a retired body shop foreman at Washington Motors Co.

Survivors include his wife, Effie B. Kinsley of Abingdon; one daughter, Donna
Gibson of Norton,; one son, William Curtis Kinsley Jr. of West Chester, Pa.; one
brother, Robert Kinsley of Bristol Tennessee; six grandchildren; eight great-
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for William Curtis Kinsley Sr. will be conducted at 8 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, in the Campbell Funeral Home Chapel, Abingdon, with the
Rev. Wayne Chant, the Rev. James Beaver and the Rev. Dale Frazier officiating.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in the
National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn. Military honors will be conducted by
Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at
the Campbell Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 6 p.m. until the time of the
service. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the nurses at Grace
Health Care at Station 2 for their kindness. The family would also like to thank
Dr. William J. Baker, Dr. Forrest Swan, Dr. Thomas Johnson and Dr. Anthony De

James E. Lampkins

LEBANON – The funeral service for James Edward Lampkins will be conducted at 11
a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev.
Lester Sexton officiating. Burial will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park in
Castlewood. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

James Edward Lampkins, 71, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, in the Maple Grove
Health Care Center. Combs Funeral Service is serving the Lampkins family.

Jeane S. Oakley

Jeane Sutherland Oakley, 87, formerly of Bristol, passed away Sunday, Oct. 3,
2004, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

She was the widow of Edmund H. Oakley and had lived most of her life in Bristol.
She moved to Roanoke in 2000, and lived at Friendship Manor, before moving to
Raleigh Court Nursing Home. She was a member of State Street United Methodist
Church in Bristol.

She is survived by three children and their families, Nancy O. Ratner and her
husband Victor of Roanoke and their four children, Joel Ratner and his wife Lisa
of Centreville, Va., Paul Ratner and his wife Julie of Parker, Colo., Dan Ratner
of Springfield, Va., and Karen and John Kennington of Orlando, Fla., Harry C.
Oakley and his wife Barbara of Bristol and their three children, Kim and her
husband Craig Dishner of Winston-Salem, N.C., Clark Oakley and his wife Leslie
of Bristol and Kelly and her husband Tal McBride of Arlington, Va., Sam C.
Oakley and his wife Jennifer of Centreville and their two sons, Sam Oakley, a
student at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., and Brad Oakley, a student at
Radford University in Radford, Va.; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia
S. Rogers of Bristol; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 o’clock Saturday morning, Oct. 16,
2004, in the Heritage Chapel of Memories at Glenwood Cemetery, with Rev. Reed
Shell officiating. The family will greet friends after the service. Memorial

Lydia M. O’quinn

HAYSI – Lydia M. O’quinn, age 76, of Route 2, passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2004,
at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol Tennessee.

Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Bart and Jocie Owens
Deel. She was a homemaker and of the Old Regular Baptist faith. In addition to
her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James M. O’quinn, her
son, Jimmy Wayne O’quinn, four brothers, Arthur, Cornelius, Herbert and Harold
Deel, and two grandsons.

Survivors include four sons, Jack and LeeVern O’quinn, both of Haysi, Gary
O’quinn of Anger, N.C., and Carl O’quinn of Vansant, Va.; one daughter, Kathy
Mattox of Louisa, Va.; four sisters, Martha Rife of Haysi, Birchie Fuller of
Tazewell, Lona Blankenship of Harmon, Va., and Elva Dales of Green Springs,
Ohio; two brothers, Andy Deel of Freeport, Pa., and James Arvil Deel of
Tazewell; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at the
Russell Prater Church, with Elders Freddie Ramey, Jackie Yates, Frank O’quinn
and Buster Mullins officiating. Burial will follow in the Bart Deel Cemetery,
Haysi. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive
friends Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, after 6 p.m. at the Russell Prater Church,
where an evening service will be held at 7 p.m.

Gladys V. Poole

ABINGDON – Mrs. Gladys Widener Poole, age 66, went to be with the Lord on
Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Born on July 14, 1938, in North Carolina, Gladys was a daughter of the late B.O.
Widener and Ella (Nanny) Widener. She was also preceded in death by an uncle,
Dewey Osborne. Gladys was a loving wife and mother, as well as a loyal friend to
all who knew her. Gladys had been employed in retail sales and was a loyal
employee to her employers through the years. Her family was her greatest joy.
She enjoyed gardening, especially the flowers in her yard and flower gardens.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Bill R. Poole Sr.; a son and
daughter-in-law, Bill R. Poole Jr. and Susan Poole; a daughter and son-in-law,
Robin Poole Grubb and Ronald J. (Bones) Grubb II, all of Abingdon; her uncle,
Verner Osborne of Abingdon; a sister-in-law, Alva Poole of Fredericksburg, Va.;
and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, in the
Mausoleum Chapel at Knollkreg Memorial Park, with Rev. Danny Thompson and Rev.
John Wesley Price officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until
the time of the service. Honorary casket bearers will be Ralph Fern, Bob Cumbow,
Roy Wilson, Ronnie Johnson, Roger Linkous, Floyd McVey, Doug Wheeler, Bobby
Bolling, Cecil Gobble, Dr. Matthew Wood, Dr. Jim Moore, James Denton and Judge
Charles H. Smith. The family will receive friends at any time at their home, 397
Baugh Lane, Abingdon. Family and friends are welcome to sign the register book
at the funeral home at any time. In place of flowers, the family has asked that
memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, in support of breast-

Ina A. Powers

CLINTWOOD – Ina A. Powers, age 98, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at
Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Clintwood.

Born in Nora, Va., she was a daughter of the late Elijah and Katherine Phillips
Amburgey. She was a homemaker and a member of Sulpher Springs Primitive Baptist
Church, Frying Pan, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
her husband, Harvey W. Powers; two sons, Cecil and Noel Powers; and one
daughter, Trula Powers.

Survivors include five daughters, Eda Bartley of Oregon, Dolly Mullins of
Cincinnati, Earline (Billy) Epling of Columbus, Ohio, Lear (Harry) Mullins of
Haysi and Sue (Bob) Birchfield of Johnstown, Pa.; two sons, Harvey W. Powers Jr.
of Haysi and Glenn Powers of Kingston Spring, Tenn.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at Haysi
Funeral Home, with Elders Joe Edwards and Darrell Davis officiating. Burial will
follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. Family and friends will serve
as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at the
funeral home, where a visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m.

Ralph Eugene Taylor

NORTON – Graveside burial rites for Ralph Eugene "Gene" Taylor will be conducted
at 11 a.m. Thursday at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton, with VFW Post 4301 of
Norton conducting military honors. Family and friends will gather at the funeral
home on Thursday at 10:30 a.m., prior to leaving in procession to the cemetery.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the West Norton
Church, 4423 Robinette Hill Road, Norton, VA 24273, or to the Cancer Outreach
Foundation, Inc., 206 Abingdon Place, Abingdon, VA 24211.

Ralph Eugene "Gene" Taylor, 48, went to be with the Lord, Monday, Oct. 11, 2004,
at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital, after an extended illness. Hagy & Fawbush
Funeral Home of Norton is serving the Taylor family.
