At a court held for Botetourt County the 12th day of June, 1770.

Present.
   Robt. Breckenridge, John Bowyer, Is. Christian, Wm. Fleming, Jas. Trimble &
Stephen Trigg, Gent.

   James Robinson, one of the Gentlemen named in the Commission of the Peace,
took the usual oaths to his Majesty's Person and Government repeated and
subscribed the test and also took the oaths of a Justice of the Peace, of a
Justice in the County Court in Chancery, and of a Justice of Oyer & Terminer.

   Anne McAdow's acknowledgment of satisfaction for dower to John McAdow her
husband proved by the oaths of Nathaniel Evans & Baptist Armstrong the witns.
thereto and ord. to be recd.

   A report of the dividing line between this County & Augusta returned to Court
by James Trimble, the Surveyor thereof, and ordered to be recorded. And it is
further ordered that the sd. James be allowed at the laying the next County Levy
sixteen pounds, three shillings and three pence for running the same, being the
fees allowed by law, and for his expences, which the Court doth allow him.

   Ordered that Andrew Lewis, John Bowyer, Wm. Christian, Francis Smith &
Stephen Trigg or any three or more of them sell such lotts as now are or shall
be laid oft in the Town of Fincastle out of the County land on such terms as
they shall judge most for the advantage of the County and for the improvement of
the Town.

   Ordered that the Surveyor of this County do survey the entries of land made
on behalf of the County and lay them off in lotts as the persons appointed to
sell the other lotts shall direct and make report thereof to the Court.

   Ordered that Charles Gatliff be fined in five pounds for breaking the peace
in presence of the court, and that he be committed to the goal untill he shall
pay the same and untill he shall be bound in the penalty of fifty pounds and
find two sufficient securities to be bound in twenty five pounds each for his
good behaviour during the term and time of twelve months from this day.

   Ordered that John Smith be summoned to the next court to shew cause why his
children should not be taken from him and bound out accdg. to law.

   Philip Love proved a certificate accdg. to law for three thousand nine
hundred and forty two pounds of winter rotted hemp made on ins plantation in
this County.

   Thomas Tosh proved a certificate accdg. to law for five hundred and seventy
five pounds of winter rotted hemp made on his plantation in this County.

   Richard Woods, Junr., proved a certificate accdg. to law for one thousand
four hundred and ninety eight pounds of winter rotted hemp made on the
plantation of Richard Woods, Senr., in this County.

   Samuel Moore proved a certificate accdg. to law for nine hundred & twenty
nine pounds of winter rotted hemp.

   Arthur McClure proved a certificate accdg. to law for two thousand three
hundred and twenty nine pounds of hemp.

   John Willey proved a certificate accdg. to law for thirteen hundred and
thirty five pounds hemp.

   John Kilpatrick proved a certificate for Thos. Kilpatrick accdg. to law for
eighteen hundred & ninety one pounds of hemp.

   Archibald McCurdy proved a certificate accdg. to law for seventeen hundred
and one pounds of winter rotted hemp.

   Thomas Willson proved a certificate accdg. to law for two thousand two
hundred and seventy nine pounds of winter rotted hemp.

   Hugh Allen proved a certificate accdg. to law for five hundred & fifty four
pounds of winter rotted hemp.

   James Scott proved a certificate accdg. to law for nine hundred and thirty
seven pounds of winter rotted hemp.

   Samuel Willson proved a certificate accdg. to law for nine hundred and ninety
eight pounds of hemp.

   Matthias Yoakum proved a certificate accdg. to law for six hundred and sixty
pounds of hemp.

   William Lawrence proved a certificate according to law for twenty hundred
weight of winter rotted hemp.

   Robert Breckenridge proved a certificate accdg. to law for seven hundred &
fifty one pounds of winter rotted hemp.

   William Christian proved a certificate accdg. to law for twenty five hundred
three quarters and fourteen pounds of hemp.

   The order made yesterday to fine Charles Gatliff set aside and he is
discharged out of custody and allowed untill the next court to get security for
his good behaviour.

   This court doth appoint the several persons following to be Constables
(towit): William Prewit on Holston's River in the room of Frederick Stern, who
is discharged from that office; Conrod Goldman between the above Precinct and
Beaver Creek.

   John Armstrong, Bryan McDonald and Francis Smith, three of the persons
appointed to view and lay off the nearest and best way from the first ford on
Catawba to the head waters thereof, having made report that a road may be made
round the fields of Jas. McCown, James Adams, and William Ledgerwood, it is
ordered that the same be established, and that James McAfee and James Glenn do
with the tithables belonging to the said road open and keep the same in repair.

   A report of a road being made and returned by Daniel McNeill and John McAdow
and approved of by the court. It is ordered that Daniel McNeill be Surveyor
thereof.

   Ordered that Henry Cartmill, Michael Cloyd, James Cloyd, James Gilmore and
Bryan McDonald or any three or more of them being first sworn do view the
several ways proposed for roads (by Mrs. Buchanan's, Wm. Crow's, John Smith's
and William Rowland's) from Walter Stewarts on the north side of the river to
the court house, and report the conveniences & inconveniences attending each
respectively, as well as the several distances, to the next court, and the party
petitioning for the same to pay the expence of measuring the sd. distances.

   Bryan McDonald, James Rowland and James Snodgrass appointed to view the
nighest and best way from Miller's Mill to the first ford on Catawba, having
reported to the court that a road may be easily made, it is ordered that the
same be established, and that Bryan McDonald and James Snodgrass, together with
the tithables that John Armstrong & James Rowland shall appoint to attend them
do open & keep the same in repair.

   This court doth set George Willson Levy free provided he maintains his
children and keeps them off the Parish.

   Ord. that this court be adjd. till tomorrow morning eight o'clock.

   The minutes of these proceedings were signed.

At a court held for Botetourt County the 13th of June, 1770.

              Present.
William Preston, Israel Christian, John Bowyer, James Trimble, William Fleming,
John Bowman, & Stephen Trigg, Gent.

   Ordered that the Church Wardens bind Joseph Love, orphan of Joseph Love,
decd., to James Stewart, accdg. to law.

   Ord. that the court be adjd. till tomorrow morning, eight o'clock.
The minutes of these proceedings were signed.
