MRS.JOHN LANCASTER,and brother of MRS.GEORGE HARGETT & MRS.BURNELL CONNER,all of
Ripley-died Wednesday night of last week in Haywood County Memorial Hospital,after
injured in an auto accident seven miles west of Brownsville on Highway 19.He was 64
years old.Services were last Friday in Trinity Methodist Church,burial in church
cemetery.He also leaves his wife,Mrs.Lelia WALKER WILLIS,sister of Wm.F. WALKER and
Lewis J.WALKER,both of Ripley; a son,TOMMY B. WILLIS of Brownsville; a
daughter,MRS.ROBERT KELLY of Arlington,Virginia; two brothers, Rev.AVERY WILLIS of
Tulsa,Okla.,and BILL LANCASTER,of Memphis; two other sisters, MRS.PAT WILEY of
Jackson and Mrs.JOHN KNOX of Trenton.

DON POWELL--Dyer County Register and brother of MRS.DAVID HURT,of Halls,died
Thursday morning of last week,shortly after being admitted to Parkview
Hospital,Dyersburg,suffering a heart attack in his home in RoEllen,he was 59
years.Burial in Rehobeth Cemetery in RoEllen.

MRS.PEARL CIANCIOLA--mother of MRS.JOSEPHINE JACOCKS of Halls,died last Thursday in
her home in Memphis after a long illness,she was 74. Mass was in Sacred Heart
Catholic Church,burial in Calvary Cemetery,Memphis.Born in Sicily,she moved to
Memphis as a young girl.Her husband,GUS CIANCIOLA,died in 1960.She also leaves four
sons; FRANK, VINCENT, MIKE, and PETE CIANCIOLA,all of Memphis; five other
daughters; MRS.ANNE PAYNE, MRS.MARY BRYANT, MRS.PEARL TAYLOR, and MRS.PAULINE
DONATI,all of Memphis and MRS.CONSTANCE FERRERA,of Detroit.

MRS.ADA ESCUE VADEN--widow of JASPER C. VADEN, died Saturday in the home of her
son,J.W. VADEN at Curve.She was 90. Services were Sunday in Concord Methodist
Church,burial in church cemetery.Born in Haywood County,she had lived in this
county since her husband's death in 1932. She leaves two other sons, CHARLIE SMITH
VADEN of Forked Deer and WILLIAM CLYDE VADEN of Sledge,Miss.;four brothers, HENRY

Halls,died Tuesday in her home in Halls.She was 46. She had been dismissed Saturday
from Campbell's Clinic in Memphis where she had received treatment for a broken hip
suffered in a fall on the ice at her home several weeks ago.Services were Wednesday
in Halls Funeral Home,burial in South Fork Cemetery.She leaves her husband; her
parents,MR.& MRS.JOHN BAILEY of Halls; three daughters,MRS.MADALINE JANE WOOD of
Jackson, MRS.PANSY ARNELL LANGLEY of Memphis and MRS.PATRICIA ANN WILSON of

MRS.ETHEL BONER BROWN--wife of BOB BROWN,in Antioch community near Halls was found
dead in bed Wednesday morning at her home, she was 52. Services were Thursday in
Antioch Church of Christ,burial in church cemetery.She also leaves four sons;
TIFFORD, JOE, and GARY WAYNE BROWN,all of Halls and DONALD BROWN of Memphis; three
daughters, MRS.PERCY POOLE, MRS.ROY COOK,and MISS BONNIE SUE BROWN,all of Halls;

OSCAR (COLLIE) OSTEEN--of Star Route,Ripley,died Sunday in Lauderdale County
Hospital,he was 57. Services were Thursday in Garner Funeral Home,burial in
Mt.Pleasant Cemetery.Born in Cardwell,MO,he moved to Lauderdale County more than 50
years ago.He leaves his wife,MRS.THELMA KIRKPATRICK OSTEEN; two daughters, MRS.LADY
MAE CANNON of Memphis and MRS.ELNORA PALLEY of Pomona Park,FL; two
sisters,MRS.POLLY WHITE of Chicago and MRS.DORIS HUGHES of Chicago.

CHRIS WAYNE NEWMAN--son of VERNON & EVANGELINE KOONCE NEWMAN Jr.,who was born
December 25th in Lauderdale County Hospital,died December 27th in LeBonheur
Hospital,Memphis.Graveside services were held last Monday in Lauderdale County

farmer,died in 1940.She leaves a son, MURRAY W.BLURTON of Dyersburg,an auto dealer;

DAVID C.PARTEN--retired Central farmer,died Saturday in the home of his son,PAUL
PARTEN at Central,he was 79.Services were Sunday in Grace Baptist Church,burial in
New Hope Cemetery.Born in Brighton,he moved to Central in 1963.He also leaves
sons,HORATIO L.,of Chicago and SILAS,of Fillmore,Calif.; two daughters,MRS.GERTIE

MRS.EDITH R.COKER--of Memphis,sister of POWERS SMITH of Henning,died Monday at
St.Joseph's Hospital,Memphis,she was 59.Born in New Albany,Miss.,she moved to
Memphis from Henning 21 years ago.She made her home with her daughter,MRS.ALMA MAE
LEE.Her husband,WILLIS H.COKER died 20 years ago.She also leaves a
sister,MRS.C.B.CRAWFORD of memphis; another brother,C.D.SMITH of Memphis.

MRS.ALMA OLDS HUTCHERSON--of 1121 Knox Road,Memphis,who was born and reared in
Nankipoo,died at 2:30 a.m.Tuesday in St.Joseph Hospital,Memphis after a long
illness.She was 49.Services were at 1 p.m.Wednesday in Memphis Funeral Home,burial
was in Halls Cemetery.She moved to Memphis 25 years ago.Her husband,LOFTON
J.HUTCHERSON,is an employee of Klinke-Reed Dairies there.A member of the Decatur
Street Christian Church,Memphis,she was active in it's Woman's Society of Christian
Service.She leaves her husband; a daughter,MRS.PHILLIP HARDING of Whitehaven; her
mother,MRS.JOHN E.OLDS; six sisters, MRS.ILA CLAY, MRS.AUDREY HALL, MRS.EFFIE
WILLIAMS, MRS.LULA BELTON, MRS.ALLIE CLEMENT,and MRS.EILEEN TILLMAN; three
brothers,LUSTER OLDS, LOUIS OLDS, and DR.JOHN G.OLDS,all of Halls; and two
grandchildren.

ALEX OSBURNE (BUDDY) WILSON--retired Halls farmer,died Wednesday in Lauderdale
County Hospital,where he had been a patient for 16 days after breaking a hip in a
fall,he was 89.Services will be Friday in New Hope Methodist Church,burial in Grace
Cemetery.His wife,MRS.LAURA CALDWELL WILSON died March 18,1963.His brother,HERMAN
WILSON,who died in 1956,operated H.M.WILSON & Co.,in Ripley.He leaves two

AUBREY LEE OLDS--of Lexington,a factory employee; brother of CHARLES OLDS, MRS.ALF
THURMAN and MRS.JENNY LILLEY; a half-brother of MRS.ANNIE SANDERS,all of Halls,
died Wednesday night of last week at Kenneday Hospital,Memphis,which he entered in
December.He was 45.Services were last Friday in Nebo Methodist Church in
Lexington,of which he was a member.Born in Lauderdale County,he moved to Henderson
County about 20 years ago.He also leaves his wife,MRS.IRENE OLDS; a daughter,
MRS.GLENDA RUSSELL,of Alexandria,VA; two other brothers,TOLLIE OLDS of Oakland and
FREEMAN OLDS of Memphis; and another sister,MRS.LOUIS WHITE of Memphis.

ROBERT FLOYD ROBESON--farmer of Central,died Monday in Lauderdale County
Hospital,he was 72. Services were Tuesday in Ripley Funeral Home,burial in
Lauderdale Memorial Gardens.Born in Dyer County,a son of ROBERT and JOCIE HAYES
ROBESON,he moved to Lauderdale County 35 years ago.He leaves his wife,MRS.MATTIE

leaves his wife,MRS.MARY HARRISON KELTNER; three sons, HENRY NEAL KELTNER of Halls,

DAVIS,and MRS.CHARLES HARRIS,both of Poplar Grove and MRS.RAY McMILLAN,of Memphis;

GEORGE NOLEN NASH--of Somerville,a retired landowner and farmer,who was the father
of GEORGE I.NASH,of Henning,died Monday in Jackson-Madison County Hospital,he was
92.Services were Tuesday in Crawford Funeral Home,burial in Pleasant Hill
Cemetery.He also leaves two daughters,MRS.JOHN LANDRETH and MISS LELLIA NELSON,both
of Jackson;a sister,MRS.ALICE BRYANT of Memphis.

CHARLES WESLEY LATHAM--custodian of Allen Park College in Michigan,brother of PAUL
LATHAM and MRS.CLEO KNOX,both of Halls,died Wednesday of last week in Wayne County
General Hospital in Detroit,he was 51. Services were Sunday in Friendship Methodist
Church,burial in Olive Cemetery near Dyer.He was born in Crockett Co.,TN.He also
leaves another sister,MRS.ROBERT SANDERS of Gary,IN.His wife,MRS.MARY LATHAM

Memorial Park.He had lived in Memphis 40 years.He leaves his wife,MRS.SARAH
E.HOPKINS; a son,DEWEY WAYNE HOPKINS of Memphis; four brothers,V.G., J.P., and
RICK,all of Memphis and C.A.HOPKINS of Hawthrone,Calif.; four sisters,MRS.LELIA
SANDERS of Henning, MRS.RUTH SANDERS of Ripley, MRS.TENNIE CUNNINGHAM and
MRS.KATHERINE KIRBY,both of Memphis.

FRANK WALLACE--retired commercial fisherman,of Fulton,died Wednesday of last week
in Kennedy Hospital,Memphis,he was 69. Services were Friday in Ripley Funeral
Home,burial in Maplewood Cemetery. Born in Alton,Illinois,he spent most of his life
in Lauderdale County.He leaves only neices and nephews,including MRS.MARGARET
BAIN,of Osceola,AR.

MRS.MAGGIE HARRISON RICHARDSON--widow of CHARLES RICHARDSON,died last Thursday in
Lauderdale County Hospital,she was 79. Services were Friday in Ripley Funeral
Home,burial in Mt.Pleasant Cemetery.She leaves three sons,WILLIAM, ALFRED,and
CHARLIE,all of Ripley; one sister,MRS.MATTIE KING of Harrisburg,Illinois.

BENJAMIN H.WHITE--of Millington,former Ripley barber,died Monday in St.Joseph
Hospital,Memphis,he was 84. Services were Wednesday in the First Baptist Church in
Ripley,burial in Trinity Cemetery,Nut Bush. Born in Crockett County,he moved from
Ripley to Memphis 18 years ago.He had been a barber for 53 years.Shortly before his
death,he willed his eyes to an eye bank.His wife,ROSA MANESS WHITE,who died in
1949,was born and reared in Ripley.He leaves two sons,ELLIOTT WHITE of Memphis and
THOMAS J.WHITE of Millington; a daughter,MRS.CHARLES M.YEAGER of Millington; and a
sister,MRS.ELLA BARBEZAT of Calif.

MISS MARY MARGARET FOWKLES--17,of Dyersburg,granddaughter of MR.& MRS.JOHN HOLCOMB
of Ripley died last Friday in Baptist Hospital,Memphis.She had long been ill with a
heart ailment. Services were Saturday in Hawthrone Baptist Church,Dyersburg,burial
was in Concord Cemetery near Gates,Tenn. She also leaves her mother,MRS.MARY
E.SMITH of Troy; her father,CHARLES A.FOWKLES of Dyersburg; five sisters,HILDA FAYE
FOWKLES, ANNIE SUE FOWKLES, PAMELA SMITH and LEE SMITH,all of Troy and MITZIE GALE
FOWKLES of Dyersburg; three brothers,DAVID ALLEN FOWKLES and GERALD RAY
MASSENGILL,both of Dyersburg and HERBERT ALLEN SMITH of Troy; and her
grandfather,CLYDE FOWKLES,of Dyersburg.

MRS.MAUDE GRIFFIN DURHAM--widow of WALTER L.DURHAM SR.,died Monday morning at her
home in Ripley after 18 months illness,she was 84. Services were Tuesday in Garner
Funeral Home,burial in Maplewwod Cemetery. Born in Crockett County,she had lived in
Lauderdale County fifty years.Her husband who was Lauderdale County Register from
1918 until 1930; also a tobacco tax inspector,died in 1935.She leaves a son,C.LYLE
DURHAM of Ripley; a brother,E.LYLE GRIFFIN of Tampa,Fla. Another son,the late
WALTER L.DURHAM,JR.,was Agriculture and Plant-to-Prosper editor of the Memphis
Commercial Appeal.

ROBERT HURSHEL DANIEL--retired Lexington farmer,brother of EVERETT R.DANIEL of
Halls,died late Saturday in Jackson-Madison County General Hospital,he was 76.
Services were Monday in Antioch Baptist Church,burial in church cemetery.He laso
leaves his wife,MRS.ONIE DANIEL; three daughters,MRS.CLARA MAY PART and MRS.MILDRED
LOUISE BALLARD,both of Lexington and MRS.EULA ERNESTINE GARDNER of Henderson; two
sons,FRANKLIN DANIEL and ROBERT DANIEL,both of Louisville,Ky.;and another
brother,JOHN DANIEL of Lexington.

LEONARD WAITS BREWER--who had farmed near Henning for the last two years,was found
shot dead about 10 a.m. Monday in his car parked on the side of a Covington
street.He was 53. Tipton Co.Sheriff BILLINGS said a 12-gauge shotgun wound was
self-inflicted. Services were Tuesday in Maley Funeral Home,burial in Munford
Cemetery.He had visited his estranged wife,MRS.EUNICE CONLEE BREWER,at the home of
her sister,MRS.A.Q.ROBERTS,near Covington,his wife's relatives told Sheriff
BILLINGS.The sheriff said MR.BREWER told his wife's relatives they "would see him
again,but he would not see them." Born in Tipton County,he moved to Lauderdale
County in 1962.He leaves his wife; a son,JOHN FRANKLIN BREWER of Covington; a
daughter,MRS.JOSIE LEE WILLIAMSON,of Palestine,Illinois; a brother,CHARLIE BREWER

DIES IN CAR-TRAIN COLLISION--One employee of Custom-Craft Mfg.Co.in Halls was
killed and another seriously injured about 11:25 p.m.last Friday when their car
struck a train at the Tigrett Street grade crossing in Halls.The fatality was
ROBERT PAUL REYNOLDS,32,father of seven,a truck-driver for the mfg.co.Taken to
Parkview Hospital,Dyersburg,was his assistant driver,DANNY MEEKS,22,who suffered
shoulder,rib and right leg fractures.The men were on their way to board their
truck.Both men were thrown from the car. Services for MR.REYNOLDS were Sunday in
the First Baptist Church,burial in Palestine Cemetery.He leaves his wife,MRS.JOY
GIPSON REYNOLDS; his parents,MR.& MRS.W.P.REYNOLDS of Bruceville; four
sons,PHILLIP, STEVIE, GARY,and DAVID REYNOLDS; three daughters,JUDY, ANITA,and
CARLA JO REYNOLDS,all at home; three brothers,WYMOND and LARRY REYNOLDS,both of

GILBERT LEE HUNTER--retired farmer,died Tuesday at his home in Glimp after long
illness,he was 73. Services were Thursday in Garner Funeral Home,burial in
Lauderdale Memorial Gardens.Born in Glimp,he moved to Forrest City,Ark.,in 1916 and
lived there 33 years before returning to Lauderdale County.He leaves his
wife,MRS.THARAH HOWELL HUNTER; a daughter,MRS.LOUISE GILBERT of Memphis; a
brother,J.B.HUNTER of Memphis; a sister,MRS.LINNIE BOYLES of Memphis.

LOUIS ODOM--formeremployee of Anderson-Tully Lumber Co.,who moved to Memphis from
Henning in October,died last Thursday in St.Joseph Hospital,Memphis after two years
illness,he was 79. Services were Saturday in Memphis Funeral Home,burial in
Ravencroft Cemetery in Munford.Born in Nashville,he had spent most of his life in
Henning.He leaves several neices and nephews.

GEORGE A.JACKSON--clerk in Cursey's Minnow Shop in Ripley took his own life at 8
a.m.last Friday in his home in Mary's Chapel,according to Dr.A.J.BUTLER,Lauderdale
County Medical Examiner.Mr.JACKSON,who was 57,had been in bad health.His body was
found hung from a doorframe in his home with a nylon fishing cord. Services were
Sunday in Conner Assembly of God Church,of which he was a member,burial in Mary's
Chapel Cemetery. Born in Dyer County,he had lived in Lauderdale County 47 years.He
leaves his wife,MRS.HELEN LAND JACKSON; his mother,MRS.ALICE HOLCOMB of Edith; a
son,JAMES JACKSON of Chicago,Ill.;two daughters, MRS.GEORGIA BRIDGEWATER and
MRS.MARTHA CROWDER,both of Ripley; three brothers,JESSE JACKSON of Edith,CLARENCE

MR.& MRS.WYATT R.TOMLINSON,she lived in Shelby County before she moved to Henning

GEORGE E.MORTON--Memphis,employee of Humko Products Corp.,whose wife is a cousin of
MRS.WILLIE BEST, MRS.G.W.TAYLOR and MRS.B.M.COOK,all of Ripley,died Tuesday in
St.Joseph Hospital,Memphis,after long illness.He was 47. Born in Brighton,TN he
moved to Memphis as a child.He leaves his wife,MRS.LOUISE LACY MORTON; his
mother,MRS.ELIZA D.MORTON,of Memphis; two sons,GERALD GRAYSON MORTON and GEORGE

Covington until she moved to Memphis 22 years ago. She worked for Shelby Box Co.for
16 years and later worked as a seamtress.She also leaves her father,C.A.ELLIS of
Bells; four other half-sisters,MISS GAIL ELLIS and MRS.JOHN MAYFIELD,both of
Memphis, MRS.SAM GRIFFIN of Covington and MRS.FAYE GUINN of Brownsville; and a
brother,HENRY C.ELLIS of Memphis.

MRS.LUCY ETTA TALLEY PATTON--of Halls,widow of Lauderdale County Judge
W.C.PATTON,of Ripley died Tuesday in Lauderdale County Hospital,she was 86.
Services were Wednesday in First Methodist Church ,Halls,burial in Halls
Cemetery.Born near Watertown,Wilson County,she moved to Lauderdale County in
1903.Her husband died November 10,1958. She leaves a son,ROY PATTON of Halls.

WALTER MARION VOWELL--Henning farmer,died at 10 p.m.Sunday in Lauderdale County
Hospital,which he entered that day,after brief illness.He was 87. Services were at
2 p.m.Tuesday in Glimp Methodist Church of which he was a member.The Rev.F.R.BELL
and the Rev.B.I.CRIDER,officiated.Burial was in Lauderdale Memorial Gardens.He was

Phoenix,former Riplian,was killed Sunday when a 50 gallon oil drum exploded in his
face as he forced air into it.Detective JON SELLARS reconstructed this account:
KINNEY,a freshman in Phoenix College,and four other youths drove a pickup trunk
into the station.KINNEY sat on the edge of the truck bed and forced air from a
station air hose into the drum,which had been partly filled with water,"We wanted
to see if the can could build up enough pressure to squirt water," said KINNEY's
friend,DAVID NORRIS,20. "I heard what sounded like a sonic boom," said STEVE
SELBY,17,service station attendant.Young KINNEY was pronounced dead at St.Joseph
Hospital.His mother,MRS.MARGARET TUCKER KINNEY,and her husband,a Phoenix
attorney,formerly lived in Brownsville.The youth also leaves four brothers,JOHN
KINNEY,a Phoenix College sophomore, RANDOLPH KINNEY,a high school senior, KENNETH

HARRY A.BOOKOUT--a meat cutter,who was born in Ripley,died shortly before noon
Tuesday in his home in Collierville from a gunshot wound to the head.Sheriff's
deputies said a suicide note was found and a .32 caliber pistol was near the
body.Relatives said MR.BOOKOUT had been dispondant because of illness which had
kept him from working.The body was found in the home in the bedroom by his
brother.JOHN F. BOOKOUT,JR. He moved to Collierville in 1940.He had operated a cage
there and worked as a meat cutter at Farmers Market,Memphis.He also leaves his

Service,was killed and three young women seriously injured ar midnight Saturday in
a collision on Highway 19 West,about a mile west of Scott's Hill.MR.OWEN drove a
station wagon which had just rounded the curve before its impact with a sedan in
which the young women,residents of Star Route,Ripley,were west bound.Admitted to
Lauderdale County Hospital were the driver of the car,MARY PHYLLIS

20 year armed robbery sentence from Shelby County,suffered a fatal head wound last
Friday in an ax swinging battle with two other negro inmates at Fort Pillow State
Prison Farm.The two others were THEORDORE ROGERS,20,and JAMES NICHOLS,20,both of

HEAD-ON COLLISION--FARNSWORTH EUGENE PUGH,54,Halls landowner,ginner and bank
director,was killed Saturday in a head-on collision on Highway 51,south of
Gates.The other driver,BOBBY GERALD CAPPS,35,of Union City credited his fastened
seat belt with the fact he received only minor chin and wrist injuries.It was
CAPP's first accident in 14 years as cable splicer for Southern Bell Telephone
Co.CAPPS told patrolman that PUGH was looking off the highway when his pick-up
began to angle into CAPPS' lane.CAPPS said he swerved to miss a crash,but PUGH's
truck struck the right front side of CAPPS truck.JACOBS found CAPPS truck in the
south bound lane headed north,PUGH's truck was at right angles in it half off the
highways other lane,with it's rear end on the shoulder.  Services for PUGH were in

Saturday in Parkview Hospital which she entered May 20th,after having broken a hip

Cemetery near Friendship.Born in Dyer County,she moved to Lauderdale County in

MRS.NORA LEE LEGGETT DEW--widow of HENRY H.DEW,Curve farmer,who died in 1962,died

car driven by MISS MELLIE LOUISE VOGT,17,were injured.The other car,driven by
MR.D.F.WOLFE,20,had two infured,his wife,20,and their 19-month-old son,WILL.MISS

A HEAD-ON COLLISION--during pouring rain early Wednesday killed one recent Ripley
High School graduate and injured another.Dead is NORMAN DALE PARHAM,18,son of MARK
TURNER PARHAM,of Ripley,an employee of Fort Pillow State Prison Farm.In serious
condition in Naval Hospital,Millington,is ROBERT STAFFORD,18,of Bartlett,formerly
of this county.NORRIS TAYLOR NIX,Jr.,22,of Covington,tried to pass a gasoline truck
on a slight curve and hit STAFFORD's car.  Services for PARHAM were in Garner

hanged from a rafter in a shed behind his home in Henry Tuesday of last week.He was
53.His wife,MRS.RUBY PARRISHGUINN found the body when she returned home from her
job at Paris Mfg.Co. DR.IKE JONES,Henry County medical examiner said MR.GUINN had
been dead about 8 hours,he classified the death a suicide.He also leaves a
daughter,MRS.VIRGINIA JOYCE COOK of Paris; two sons,JAMES L.GUINN of Paris,and

MRS.ISADORE LEE OUTLAW SAVAGE--widow of M.W.SAVAGE,Gates merchant,died at 11:15
p.m.Wednesday in the home of her daughter,MRS.E.D.SULLIVAN,in Gates,after a long
illness.She was 99.Services will be at 11 a.m.Friday in Gates Baptist Church,of
which she was a member.Burial will be in Gates Cemetery.Born in Haywood County,she
lived at Toulon before she moved to Lauderdale County in 1906.The oldest resident
in Gates,she and her husband had been married 72 years when he died seven years

TWO DIE AS FREIGHT RIPS PANAMA--The conductor of the Panama Limited,crack Illinois
Central Railroad passenger streamliner,and a negro porter were killed at 12:35
a.m.Monday when a freight backed into the obervation car as it rolled onto a siding
north of Halls,im maneuvering to pass the frieght during pouring rain.The
conductoe,JACK EDWARDS,51,of Memphis,formerly of Fulton,Ky.,died enroute to
Parkview Hospital.The body of the porter,CLARENCE W.SUTTON,64,of Chicago,had to be
cut from the wreckage of the car.The freight train's conductor,CLYDE BATTS,of
Fulton,Ky.,whose wife is the former GRACE VADEN of Halls,was not in the
caboose,having left the train to telephone a dispatcher in Memphis to schedule the
pass at Halls,rather than at Rialto,as orginally planned.

ROBERT W.SUTTON--Memphis cheif engineer of the Chotin Touring Co. of Baton Rogue
and New Orleans,La.,son of MRS.E.L.SUTTON and brother of W.F.SUTTON and MRS.RUSSELL
REVIERE,all of Ripley,died Wednesday aboard the river tug Louisiana,after a heart
attack.He was 44.MR.SUTTON's 13-year-old son,ROBERT,JR.,was making his first river
trip with his father at the time. Services were in Memphis Funeral Home and in

Nashville after a visit here.She was reported to have followed her father across

wife,CHRISTINE CULLOM BRANDON,died shortly before he moved to Memphis.He also
leaves two great-grandchildren.

DEATH--A neighbor Wednesday night found SANFORD A.WALKER,40,who a week ago reported
having been kidnapped and robbed,dead from a shotgun blast in the face in a pasture
300 yards behind his home at 4699 Raliegh-Millimgton Road.WALKER's left shoe was
off deputies said,and a .410-gauge shot gun lay nearby.The death was officially
listed as self-inflected.WALKER,agent for the Life of Georgia Insurance Co.,had
been missing since Wednesday of last week,the day after he reported two men jammed
him in the trunk of his car,robbed him of $164,and drove him around for 8 hours
while threatening to throw him in the Mississippi River.He told deputies he freed
himself when his captors drove off in another car.Born in Lauderdale County,he
moved to Memphis eights months ago from Atlanta,Ga.He was an Army Vet of WWII and

LARRY RAY TAYLOR--18-year-old Kenton High School student was killed Wednesday when
his 1962 Super Sport Chevrolet collided with an empty gravel truck driven by JAMES
PIERCE MILLER of Route 4,Ripley,who was shaken but not seriously injured.TAYLOR,a
part-time employee of Hill's Dairy Bar in Kenton was on his way home from school
when the collision occurred near the home of his parents,MR.& MRS.VAN TAYLOR.

MRS.MYRTLE RAY BRANTLEY--79,wife of DUPREE BRANTLEY,farmer of Curve, died Sunday at

MRS.ANNIE LOU WEST--69,wife of ROBERT L.WEST,SR.,of 232 Highland,Ripley,died
Wednesday in Lauderdale County Hospital which she entered June 10th.Rites were
Thursday in Garner Funeral Home,with burial in one of the first three plots
purchased in Maplewood Cemetery by MR.WEST's farther,the late I.P.WEST.The
Rev.MARCUS GURLEY officiated.Born at Arp,of the pioneer patents,the late MR.&
MRS.JOSEPH G.MORRIS,she attended Ripley schools and had been a member of the first
Methodist Church here since childhood.An avid reader,she excelled in handicrafts
and was an ardent gardener.She leaves her husband with whom she celebrated their
golden wedding anniversary last September; two sons,ROBERT L.WEST JR.,an executive
of Contintal Bakery and JOSEPH EDWARD WEST,a plywood and hardware lumber
representative,both of Memphis; five grandchildren, R.L.WEST III,18, DANNY WEST,11,
BEVERLY JO WEST,9, BILL WEST,6, and MRS.MONTE PECK,whose husband is head coach at

in Carroll County,he had retired from the ministry in Arlington,Ky.,three years

BONNIE JEAN CARR--15-year-old majorette in the Lee High School band of
Columbus,Miss.,died of injuries received last Thursday when she was struck by a car
driven by JOHN NUNN,25,son of MR.& MRS.OLIVER NUNN of Halls.MISS CARR,daughter of
MR.& MRS.H.J.CARR of Columbus,was walking in a group of 14 girls on U.S.Highway 82
near Columbus when she was struck by the NUNN car.NUNN,a senior pharmacy student in
Mississippi State University at Starkville,said that as he topped a rise on the
highway he saw a car ahead of him stopped or slow speed,when he applied brakes his
car skidded out of control striking MISS CARR. NUNN has been charged with reckless

THOMAS CAPELL WALKER--of Lexington,who was born in Lauderdale County,died of
leukemia Monday in a Lexington hospital,after 5 years illness.He was 64.Services
and burial were in Lexington.A son of the late J.M.& PAULINE CAPELL WALKER of
Ripley,he was a large landowner in Haywood County.He held a doctor of philosophy
degree and had studied and taught abroad.He had taught French in the U.of
T.,Knoxville and taught English in Lexington,Ky.,until a year ago.About two weeks
ago,he sold a lot he owned on the corner of Highway 51 South and Volz Circle in
Ripley.He leaves his wife,MRS.DOROTHY HUNTER WALKER; a son,THOMAS CAPELL

p.m.Saturday in Lebanon Methodist Church of which she was the oldest
member.Rev.ENOS THURMOND will officiate.Burial will be in the church cemetery.Born
September 18,1864,a few miles northeast of Halls in Dyer County,now Crockett
County,she had lived in Halls about 19 years.She was a daughter of the late GEORGE
WASHINGTON & MARTHA ANN BEASLEY ADAMS.Her husband died in 1931.She also leaves
seven grandchildren;24 great-grandchildren; & eight great-great-grandchildren.

JOHNNY JOE THOMPSON--33,of Anchorage,Alaska,son of MR.& MRS.JOHN THOMPSON of
Curve,was one of three men killed Saturday when a light pleasure plane in which
they were making a hunting trip,crashed near Anchorage.He was employed in Anchorage
by American Van Lines.Funeral services were held in Anchorage before graveside
services Wednesday in Mount Vernon Cemetery in Memphis. He leaves his parents; his
wife,MRS.GLORIA THOMPSON; two sons,MAXIE THOMPSON & JOHNNY THOMPSON,JR.,all of

TONY RAY BOONE--2,grandson of Mrs.Lucille BOONE of Halls,died in flames which badly
damaged the Dyersburg home of the TOM AUTRY'S early Monday.Dyersburg fire chief
CLINTON KESTERSON said MRS.AUTRY,who had been keeping the son of O'NEAL & MATTIE
ROBERTSON BOONE of South Dyersburg for sometime,got two children out,but the victim
"broke away from her and she couldn't get back to get him."He said the house was 75
per cent destroyed.MRS.AUTRY and one child was treated for slight burns.Services
for the child were in Curry Funeral Home in Dyersburg.He also leaves three

NEWTON C.UTLEY--76,Lauderdale County Clerk since 1942,suffocated about 11:15
p.m.Tuesday when a fire broke out in his home on Sinclair Circle in
Ripley.Neighbors and firemen who found the living room ablaze and the house filled
with smoke discovered him in a rear bedroom.He was dead on arrival at Lauderdale
County Hospital.His sister,MISS SADIE UTLEY,who resided with him,was spending the

Methodist Hospital,Memphis,of self-inflicted gunshot wounds.He was 54.Sheriff's
deputies said MR.BEAVER,who had been in ill health,told them he shot himself twice
with a .38 caliber pistol at his home in Germantown Monday before last.He had been
in critical condition at the hospital since then.Services were in Memphis Funeral

home on West Tigrett in Halls shortly after 2 a.m.Thursday.Fireman surmised he had
fallen asleep in a chair in the living room and sought escape toward the rear of
the house,through the dining room.Policeman BUDDY MOORE,parked at the traffic light
on West Tigreet,saw the front of the house explode intp flames,blowing out both
windoes.MR.CRIHFIELD'S wife,MRS.VIRGINIA VIAR CRIHFIELD,was next door at the home
of her mother,MRS.LON VIAR,when the fire broke out.A native of Edith,he had lived
in Halls about 25 years.Services will be in the First Baptist Church,Halls,burial
in Fairview Cemetery,Dyersburg.Besides his wife,he leaves a son,PHILLIP CRIHFIELD,a

driver,RALPH B.CANNON,of Cleveland,were listed in critical condition in Upper
Cumberland Medical Center.The SHERIDANS had visited the CLARKS in Ripley and were
enroute to their home in Bethesda,Md.,when the collision occurred near
Crossville.MRS.CLARK remains with her sister in Crossville.

CYNTHIA LYNN POWELL--2,of Brownsville,great-granddaughter of MRS.WILLIE THOMPSON,of
Ripley,was killed Sunday when a car left Highway 19 about twelve miles east of
Ripley and crashed into a ditch.Relatives said the child apparently hit or grabbed
the steering wheel,causing her mother,MRS.GLORIA JEAN POWELL to lose
control.MRS.POWELL received facial cuts and bruises.Services were in Trinity

Wednesday night of last week when his truck overturned about eight miles east of
Gates.He was 38.He was traveling on the Johnson Grove - Frog Jump Road when he lost
control of the truck which overturned in a ditch and caught fire. Services were
last Friday in Maury Chapel Methodist Church,burial in Archer Chapel Cemetery.He

JAMES HAROLD TRAVIS--Dresdan auto dealer and father of MRS.DALE OVERTON,of
Halls,died Friday night after a heart attack at the Halls-Dresdan fooyball game in
Halls.He was 50. Funeral services were in Dresdan Methodist Church,burial
there.MR.TRAVIS,who had a previous history of heart trouble,was in Halls to visit
his daughter and family and to attend the game.His son,JIMMY TRAVIS,starting
quarterback for Dresdan was slightly injured in the fourth quarter and had to be
helped from the field.MR.TRAVIS collasped and never regained consciousness.He
leaves his wife,MRS.VIRGINIA CHANDLER TRAVIS; his mother,MRS.FIELDING TRAVIS; three

MRS.SADIE HILLIARD--was found dead in her home on Hazel Street in Halls Thursday
morning.She was believed to have died sometime Tuesday night.She was 71.Halls
Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.Among survivors is a sister,MRS.GUS HOPPERS

SIX PERSONS HURT,ALAMO NEGRO DIES IN FAYETTE CRASH--JUNIOR DANLEY of Ripley,MR.&
MRS.WILLIS WHEELER of Route 2,Gates and MRS.WHEELER'S sister,MRS.JOE P.BEARD of
Halls,were injured about 6:40 p.m.Saturday when Ripley Funeral Home ambulance
transferring MR.WHEELER from Lauderdale County Hospital to Kennedy
Hospital,Memphis,was involved in a collision with a pick-up truck and a car on
Highway 70 in Fayette County.Negroes in the car were VELMA MACKLIN,17,of Alamo,who
was killed,and JOHN MELVIN BROWN of Mason,the driver,who was taken to John Gaston
Hospital,Memphis,in serious condition.MR.& MRS.GEORGE McCULLY of Mason,occupants of
the truck were also injured.

MRS.LIZZIE CHAMBERS BRADSHAW--of RoELLEN,mother of MRS.RAYMOND HALL of near
Halls,died Monday in Parkview Hospital,Dyersburg.She was 90.Services were in
Johnson Funeral Home in Newbern.She was the widow of E.P.BRADSHAW,Dyer County
farmer.She also leaves a son,OSCAR J.ROGERS of Dyersburg; and step_son,W.M.BRADSHAW
of Memphis.

RAY MARRS--a welder of Lobelville,brother of MRS.PETE LAWRENCE of Ripley,died
Sunday of a heart attack in a Nashville restaurant.He was 43. Services were in
Lobelville Methodist Church,burial in Leeper Cemetery.He also leaves his
mother,SHELLIE STANFILL MARRS of Lobelville; a son,ROBERT MARRS,with the Army in
Korea.

MRS.RUTH LULA STALLINGS--widow of WILLIAM A.STALLINGS; mother of J.W.STALLINGS and
MRS.EVIE CONYERS,both of Halls,died Saturday in the home of a son,CASEY
STALLINGS,of Friendship.She was 75. Services were in Lebanon Methodist Church near
Friendship,burial in church cemetery.Her husband,Crockett County landowner,died in
1960.She leaves two other sons,BENNIE STALLINGS of Memphis and TOMMIE STALLINGS of
Friendship; two other daughters, MRS.ESTELLE GARRETT of Friendship and MRS.INEZ
GARRETT of Paris.

MRS.PENNEY MAUDE HALL--who moved to Memphis 25 years ago from Halls,daughter of
MRS.BEATRICE SILER of Halls,died last Friday in her home in Memphis.She was 51. She
also leaves her husband,W.TRENT HALL; a brother,OHLIN SILER of Winchester; and two
sisters,MRS.WESLEY SWIFT of Huntsville,Ala.,and MRS.ROY V.LITSEY of Dallas,Texas.

MRS.LIZZIE WILLIAMS LANGLEY--of Route 2,Gates,died last Thursday in Parkview
Hospital,Dyersburg.She was 75. Services were Saturday in Concord Methodist

County,she moved to Lauderdale County in 1907.She leaves three sons,W.B.VOSS and

Sunday morning in LaGrange,Illinois in an automobile accident.He was 40. Services

employed by Fisher Body Works in Lockport.He serves in Italy and Germany in WWII.He

BILLY JOE SANDERS' MURDER IS CHARGE VS AUBREY WEBB--General Sessions Court Judge
ODEAN CRAIG Tuesday afternoon bound AUBREY WEBB,Ripley merchant and theatre
operator over to the Grand Jury Action on charges of murder and of carrying a
pistol and freed him under $2,750 bonds.WEBB is charged with the fatal shooting of
BILLY JOE SANDERS,29,in The Pit cafe WEBB owns on South Main Street in Ripley about
midnight Saturday.Sheriff GWINN MATHEWS said WEBB told him that police had been
called to the cafe after SANDERS quarreled with HERBERT GRAY of Curve,and that
after GRAY left,that SANDERS had threatened him with a knife before WEBB fired
three shots from a >22 caliber pistol,two of which struck SANDERS in the left side.
Services for SANDERS,veteran of three years' Army service,who was employed by
Custom-Craft Co.in Halls were at 2 p.m.Monday in Ripley Funeral Home.He leaves his

CAR STRUCK BY TRAIN--MRS.HILDA PATTON,57,of Memphis,formerly of Ripley,was killed
Wednesday when her 1965 Cadillac was struck by a freight train at White Station and
the Southern Railroad Crossing.Witnesses said MRS.PATTON was driving north on White
Station at about 10 miles an hour and the train was moving east at slow speed.
"MRS.PATTON apparently looked east instead of west when she came to the crossing,"
said Police Inspector GRAYDON TINES."When she looked west and saw the train,she
apparently opened the door and tried to jump clear,but it was to late." He said the
train struck the left front of the car and turned it around,catching the victim
between the car and the train.Her body came to rest 20 feet from where the car
stopped.ALBERT H.CRAWFORD,41,of Ala.,fireman on the 40 car freight headed for
Sheffield,Ala.,said,"It appeared the car would stop,but it didn't.When the woman
saw that she was to far onto the tracks to avoid getting hit,she opened the door to
jump,but she didn't have time." Other witnesses; WILLIAM GEORGE SHURTLEFF,19,of
Memphis and the engineer,WILLIAM E.KEENUM,of Sheffield,said the train's whistle was
bloeing and its lights were on,and that the signals at the crossing were flashing
and the bells were ringing. MRS.PATTON,born in Ripley,operated a photographic
studio here before she moved to Memphis in 1951.She was the former wife of HARRIS
P.PATTON,chairman of the board of National Bedding and Furniture Industry Co.,on
Presidents Island. She leaves a daughter,MRS.FULTON KLINKE of Memphis; a
son,B.P.GARDNER of Palo Alto,Calif; a sister,MRS.KATHLEEN GRAVES of Ripley.

MRS.ALICE BLANKENSHIP WALDING--widow of J.D.WALDING,died Monday in O'Keefe Nursing
Home in Memphis,where she had been a patient for four years.She was 74. Services

Jackson-Madison Hospital Wednesday after three years illness.He was 80. Services
will be in South Fork Baptist Church near Halls,burial in church cemetery.Born in
Hardeman County,he moved to Dyer County near Halls in 1916.He leaves his
wife,MRS.MYRTLE MORGAN BLANKENSHIP; a son,L.B.BLANKENSHIP JR.,of near Halls; three
daughters,MRS.LESSIE JANE EZEKIEL and MRS.ROSIE LEE GILLON both of near Halls and
MRS.DAISY M.DRUGGETT of Friendship; and three sisters.

RAYMOND HUGHES--farmer of Halls,died Wednesday in Western State Hospital in
Bolivar,which he entered in 1944,after long illness.He was 52. Services will be in
Halls Funeral Home,burial in Antioch Cemetery.Born in Limestone County,Ala.,he
moved to Halls as a small child.He leaves a son,BOBBY JOE HUGHES of Chicago; two
brothers,HARRY HUGHES of Halls and NINEVEH HUGHES of Blytheville,Ark.;and a
sister,MRS.SYBIL CURLEE of Houston,Texas. END*********
