ACCIDENT FATAL TO MRS.THURMOND...Funeral services for Mrs.Nannie Malvine THURMOND,who died in the Lauderdale County Hospital,Ripley,about 5 Tuesday morning of injuries received in an automobile accident the previous morning, were held at 2 Wednesday afternoon at the Woodville Methodist Church,in which she held membership. The Rev.Bartlett of Curve officiated,burial in Woodville Cemetery. A native of Lauderdale County, Mrs.THURMOND was 39.  State highway patrolman Billy MOORE reported that she was injured when a car driven by Ray ASHMORE left Highway 51, North Monday morning and struck a telephone pole about 7 a.m.   Mrs.THURMOND is survived by her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Arch Lee CROWDER.She also leaves three sons, Ernest THURMOND, Sammy THURMOND, and Johnny Mack THURMOND,all of Gates; five daughters, Mrs.Jesse ROBBINS and Mrs.C.R. ROBBINS,both of Ripley, Shirley THURMOND, Dorothy THURMOND, and June Ann THURMOND,all of Gates; three brothers,Chester CROWDER,Dan CROWDER, and William L. CROWDER,all of Ripley; three sisters, Evelyn WILLIAMS and Mrs. O.D. HUTCHERSON,both of Ripley, and Mabel CROWDER of Gary,Ind.

LUCILLE NELSON MURLEY WILSON...79, of Ripley, died Saturday of heart failure in
her home. Services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Garners Funeral Home burial in Mt.
Pleasant Cemetery at Arp. She leaves three sons, Gene MURLEY of Ripley, John
MURLEY of Henning, and Jimmy MURLEY,of Torrance,Calif.; two sisters, Elizabeth
MUELLER of Ripley, and Katie YOCHUM, of Lafayette,La.; nine grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren. 

"The Daily Advertiser"  (Issued Saturday, February 20, 1999) A Lafayette woman
died in a house fire Friday morning in the Oakbourne Subdivision.  A firefighter
was injured fighting the blaze.  Katie Yocham, 93, died inside a one-story brick
house at 213 Vennard St near the end of East Simcoe St.  The exact cause of the
fire was still under investigation Friday night by Lafayette Fire Dept.
investigators.  The fire investigator said the fire started in the attic of the
house.  A housekeeper expected to be in the home Friday morning was not there
when the fire started.

"The Daily Advertiser"  (Issued Monday, February 22, 1999) Ripley, Tenn. --
Funeral services will be held at a later date in Ripley, Tenn. for Mrs. Martin
Dee Yochum, the former Katie Nelson, 93, of Lafayette, who died Friday, February
19, 1999, at her residence.  Interment will take place in the Arp Cemetery in
Arp, Tenn.  A native of Gold Dust, Tenn., Mrs. Yochum was a resident of
Lafayette since 1970.  She was the daughter of the late William Nelson and the
former Sarah Meter.  Mrs. Yochum is survived by one daughter, Emma Dee Bell of
Lafayette; two sons: Cled Yochum of Sun City, Arizona and George E. Yochum of
Somonauk, Illinois; 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded
in death by her husband; a 4-year old son, John T. Yochum; 5 sisters; and 2
brothers.  Delhomme Funeral Home are funeral directors in charge of the
arrangements.

"The Lauderdale Voice" (Issued Wednesday, March 3, 1999) Katie P. Martin Yochum,
93, of Lafayette, La., formerly of Ripley, died Friday, Feb. 19, at her home.
Services were Friday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. at Ripley Church of Christ with burial
in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.  Mrs. Yochum, the widow of Martin Yochum, leaves a
daughter, Emma Dee Ray Bell of Lafayette; two sons: Cled Yochum of Sun City,
Arizona and George "Pat" Yochum of Illinois; 3 grandchildren and 3 great-
grandchildren.

"The Lauderdale County Enterprise"  (issued Thursday, March 4, 1999) Katie P.
Yochum, 93, widow of Dee Yochum, died Feb. 19th in a house fire in Lafayette,
La. where her daughter, Emma Dee Roy Bell, resides.  Services were at 11 a.m.
friday in Ripley Church of Christ with burial at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Arp.
Garner Funeral home of Ripley is in charge.  She was born at Gold Dust, Sept.
28, 1905, daughter of the late William and Sarah Meter Nelson.  Survivors
include 2 sons, 3 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

in Halls, died Monday in Haywood Park Hospital in Brownsville. Rites will be
Wednesday in Halls Funeral Home, burial in Woodville Cemetery. He was an Army
veteran of WWII. A Mason and Shriner,he was a member of the Rotary Club and the
Maranatha Baptist Church at Toulon. He leaves his wife, Billie HICKS JACOCKS;
daughters, Ann RAY, of Puryear, & Rose Marie SOUTHARD, of Brownsville; a step-
son, Paul HICKS, of Tigrett; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and
one great-great-grandchild.

IN FATAL ACCIDENT..on Highway 19 east of Ripley-the second in a week-at 10
a.m.last Friday was this vehicle(picture)in which Mrs.Mary P. RAY,23,wife of
Aubrey Guy RAY of Nut Bush,and her 15-month-old son,John Blake RAY, were killed.
The car struck a cotton trailer which jack-knifed four miles west of
Brownsville,according to Highway Patrolman Don REINHARD,who identified the
driver of a pick-up truck pulling the trailer as John F. HALL,16,of Halls,and
the owner as Roosevelt JONES,of Halls.The trailer was hauling motes to Abner
ROBERSON's plant on Halls Air Base.  HALL was charged in Juvenile Court in
Haywood County with reckless driving and involuntary manslaughter.

LANGLEY, Henning, and sister of Juanita HAYNES, Ripley died Sunday in Pleasant
View Healthcare Center. Rites were Tuesday in Garner Funeral Home,burial in
Ripley Memorial Gardens. She had retired as owner of Vann's Interiors in
Knoxville. She was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in
Maryville.Other survivors include her daughter,Paula LANGLEY WILHITE of Bolivar;
four grandchildren.

was the widow of Edgar Levi KOONCE. She leaves five sons, Lloyd, Lane, &

Hospital-Lauderdale in Ripley after a long illness.Services will be at 2:30
p.m.Thursday at Garner Funeral Home with burial in Memorial Gardens.He was a
member of Mary's Chapel Church. Klutts,the husband of Echiel Milam Klutts also
leaves two daughters,Maxine Forsythe and Evelyn Elder; a son,Dwain Klutts; and a
half-sister,Pauline Kavanagh,all of Ripley; six grandchildren and four great-

County,moved to Crockett County at age 19 years.  He moved to Memphis in 1933.

of Gulf Farm Center in Halls,drowned about 5:30 p.m.Sunday when his pick-up left
Highway 88 East of Gates,just East of the Crockett County Line and over-turned
into backwater,trapping him inside.  Services were at 2:30 p.m.Tuesday in

lifelong resident of Crockett County,he was a member of the Woodmen of the

Saturday when the car in which he was riding struck a railroad overpass in

Home,Jackson,burial in Cave Springs Cemetery in Chester County.Born in Chester
County,she moved to Ripley with her parents early in life and resided here until
ahe moved to Jackson after her marriage to William Herschel SHUMATE.The SHUMATES
moved to Mercer two years ago.She was a Baptist.She died two days after the
death of her infant son,Michael Dwayn SHUMATE.Besides her husband & parents,she
leaves two sons,Rodney & Timmy,both at home; three brothers,Bill FRYE of
Ripley,Jimmy FRYE,of Memphis,and L.W.FRYE,of Chicago,Ill.; two sisters,Mrs.James

accident on Highway 87 near three points.They were transfered to a Memphis
Hospital Sunday.Both were painfully injured.

MARCH 13,1970 L.J.WAKEFIELD IS TAKEN BY DEATH..L.J.(Jack)WAKEFIELD,79,of
Ripley,farmer and retired merchant,died at 6 a.m.Wednesday in Baptist
Hospital,which he had entered two weeks ago.Services were Thursday in Ripley
Funeral Home,burial in Ripley Memorial Gardens.He was the son of the late Thomas
Newton WAKEFIELD & Mrs.Mandy GLIMP WAKEFIELD,each a member of one of Lauderdale
County's oldest families.He was a merchant in Ripley 46 years and had extensive
farming operations.He leaves two sons,Hobson WAKEFIELD of Ripley and Gordon
WAKEFIELD of Covington; two sisters,Mrs.Oma CROOK of Glimp and Mrs.C.A.McGARRITY
of Ripley; four grandchildren.

Baptist Church mourned Milton WILSON,20,son of Mr.& Mrs.Walter WILSON of
Ripley,who died Tuesday of last week in Jackson-Madison County Hospital of
injuries received in an auto accident at the intersection of Interstate 40 and
Highway 70 between Jackson & Brownsville.Burial was in the church cemetery.A
graduate of Lauderdale High School in Ripley,he was a sophomore in Jackson State
Collage.He also leaves four brothers and eight sisters.

MARCH 20,1970 CRASH IN FRAYSER IS FATAL FOR MOORE..Robert A.MOORE,27,of 550
S.White Station,Memphis,grandson of Mrs.John A.MOORE,Sr.of Halls,and of Mrs.Lynn
LAWRENCE of Ripley,was killed Sunday in a collision at Frayser & Watkins in
Memphis.Police said the car MOORE was driving west on Frayser collided with a
car traveling on Watkins,driven by Vicki Lynn ROBINSON,19,of 2011
Burnham.Mr.MOORE,a cost accountant for Humko Inc.,was taken to St.Joseph
Hospital,where he was pronounced dead.He was a veteran of two years service in
Viet Nam.He also leaves his parents,Mr.& Mrs.John A.MOORE,Jr.,and a
sister,Patricia E.MOORE,all of 2052 Worchester,Memphis.

MARCH 27,1970 SILVER STAR HAILS WOUNDED HARRIS..Capt.Jimmy W.HARRIS,son of Mr.&
Mrs.Bill HARRIS of Shoaf's Island,received the Silver Star near Tay Ninh,Viet
Nam,Feb.6th,as commanding officer of Company G,3rd Battalion,25th Div.22nd
Infantry.According to the Silver Star citation, "Captain HARRIS distinguished
himself during the entire operation. With complete disregard for his own
safety,he selflessly exposed himself to enemy fire as he directed and organized
his company,placed supessive fire against the enemy positions and aided in
evacuting numerous wounded personnel,etc." Capt.HARRIS also holds the Air Medal
and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was wounded Feb.20th and is in a hospital near
Ft.Benning,Ga.

were laid to rest in Mary's Chapel cemetery.

ENGAGED IN..loading logs on Forked Deer River Monday morning,Mr.R.P. WATKINS had
both legs broken above the ankles and possible spinal injury when a log fell on
him.He was brought to Ripley for first aid treatment by Dr. Joe LACKEY,then sent
on to BRownsville hospital.He gave his home as Philadelphia,Miss.,and was
employed by Woods Construction Co.,of Luxora,Ark.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY   JULY 17,1931 MRS.
J.R.FREELAND..who was taken ill last week while on a visit to her daughter,
Mrs.V.W. YATES,was carried to the Brownsville hospital Friday and passed away
Sunday afternoon.The immediate cause of her death was double pneumonia.The
funeral service was held in Brownsville Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock and the
remains were brought to Ripley and laid to rest in Maplewood cemetery.Deceased
was the daughter of Mrs.N.A.HART who survives her,as well as a daughter and
several brothers and sisters.

HENNING...After lingering more than four weeks,Richard Alexander HALLIBURTON
passes away at his home here on Sunday,July 12 at 2 p.m. He was the only son of
W.A. & Mary NIXON HALLIBURTON,and was born August 14,1869 in Lauderdale
County,near Henning,where he spent his entire life.He was married to Miss Emma
BOWERS on December 4,1888.To this union was born four daughters and one son;
Mrs.Bates PORTER & Mrs.Robert BARFIELD,of Memphis, Mrs.T.D.TURNER and Miss Grace
HALLIBURTON of Henning, and W.A.HALLIBURTON of Gainsville,Fla. He was a member
of the Church of Christ,burial in Bethlehem Cemetery.He also left two
sisters,Mrs.Florence POLK,of Memphis and Mrs.Jack ALSTON and a
brother,W.D.BOYD,of Henning.

PRISONERS ESCAPE..Friday night one white man and seven negroes broke jail,exit
being made by cutting a hole in the roof and sliding down a waterpipe in the
rear of the jail.Those making their get-a-way were Collin GRAVES,white,bound
over on a charge of house breaking and larceny; Wheeler WASHINGTON,charged with
larceny; Jack YOUNG,charged with larceny; Sammie FLOWERS,charged with larceny;
J.C. BLACK,juvenile case,charge,making an indecent proposal to a girl; Robert
REED,charged with murder; and Mose MOODY.The latter was recaptured Saturday.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE FRIDAY   JULY 24,1931 HENNING..The
death of Albert Francis POSEY occurred at his residence,1154 Agnes
Place,Memphis,Saturday morning,July 18,at the age of 56 years.He was the husband
of Mrs.Mary Olive UPCHURCH POSEY and the father of Mrs.R.H.SHEFFIED of
Hattiesburg,Miss.Funeral services,conducted by Rev.BATEMAN were held Sunday
morning and the remains were brought to Henning and interred in Bethlehem
cemetery.He was the only son of the late Albert and Frances SMITH POSEY.

readers would be interested to know of the death of Mrs.Hattie GRANDE,which
occurred July 19th.You,of course will remember her as the lady who lived for
many years with the late Mrs.R.F.GAINES in your county and city.Mrs.GRANDE's
maiden name was OSBORNE,a sister to my father,J.T.{Dock}OSBORNE.Her other
brothers,William,John,Robert and Alcy OSBORNE all once lived in Lauderdale
County,but are all dead now.Mrs.GRANDE had passed her 77th birthday,having been
born March 7,1854,in Haywood County,near Brownsville.She was buried in Lone Tree

If he worried,he never let on,always had peace in his mind. A mant that helped

THANKS...During the illness and death of our beloved William F. {Buddy}
KIRKPATRICK,we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your
thoughts,calls,visits,food,and for the people that helped sit with Buddy. Ripley
and Lauderdale County proved to be a great bunch of people.Thanks to Garner
Funerl Home for a job well done. Buddy loved the people of the county and he
would be very proud of all of you. Thanks to the four ministers that made his
service so great for the family. A thank you to Mary Beth BARNES and the
Rev.Gary GREEN for the beautiful songs. Most of all, we thank you for your many

"Buddy" Kirkpatrick,69,of Ripley,retired farmer and carpenter,died Monday at his
residence. Services were at 1 p.m.at First Assembly of God Church,where he was a
member,with burial in Ripley Memorial Gardens.Garner Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors include his wife,Mae Kirkpatrick,of Ripley; a son,Tony Kirkpatrick,of
Ft.Myers,Fla.; two daughters,Linda Trinidad and Sherry Morrison,of Ripley; three
brothers,Don Kirkpatrick and Bobby Kirkpatrick and Gary Kirkpatrick,all of
Ripley; and one sister,Pam Laton,of Henning; five grandchildren; and one great-
grandchild.

MEMORIAN..With hands as tough as boot leather, but as soft as a baby's behind.
If he worried,he never let on,always had peace in his mind. A mant that helped
mold this county of Lauderdale. Just like other great ones of his generation,
never held a public office.His job was that of a strong church supporter and a
very strong farmer.If he has his way,he's already taking care of something in
Heaven and doing a very good job at it. He will be missed but never forgotten,
because he was from a family of very strong ties.So proud he was a big part of

LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE JANUARY 18,1996 HAL BLANTON
McBRIDE...87, of 308 College, Halls, retired farmer and ginner, died Monday in
his home. Services were set for Thursday in Halls Funeral Home,burial in Mount
Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery, Unionville, of which he was a member. He was
born at Unionville November 25,1908, son of the late Albert and Ola H. BURKS
McBRIDE. He leaves his wife, Virginia Maurine MOORE McBRIDE; a daughter, Doris
FITZHUGH of Halls; a son, Donald McBRIDE of  Littleton,Colo.; a brother, Don
McBRIDE of Paragould,Ark.; two sisters, Mattie Sue AKIN,of Unionville and Arline
HIPPS, of Dyersburg; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE JANUARY 18,1996 MARTHA LOUISE
FAIN...63,of Henning, widow of Charles Edward FAIN, died Saturday of heart
failure ,in Baptist Hospital  in Memphis. Services were Monday in Yarbrough
Funeral,Ripley, burial in Maplewood Cemetery. She leaves a son, C.E. "Chuck"
FAIN, Jr. of Henning; two brothers, John Stacy BALLARD of Halls, and G.P.
BALLARD  of Covington; seven sisters, Alice PERRY, Connie BURRIS, Josephine
TRAVIS, Shirley BEST, and Virginia WEIR, of Covington, Mildred SONDERMAN of
Memphis, and Frankie LOVETT, of Downers Grove,Illinois.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY, TENNESSEE FEBRUARY 8,1996 MRS. FRANK
BLACK...103, of Memphis, mother of Olivia Mai CHIPMAN, of Ripley, died Sunday of
heart failure in Baptist Hospital East in Memphis. Services were Tuesday in
Garners Funeral Home, burial in Lightfoot Cemetery. She was a member of First
Baptist Church in Ripley. She was the widow of Frank BLACK. Survivors include
three other daughters, Dorlese OWENS and Martha HENDREN of Memphis, and Frances
Lavelle ROBERSON of Livermore, Calif.; six grandchildren; and 15 great-
grandchildren.


LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY, TENNESSEE JANUARY 25,1996 FLORENCE
WANDLER...76, of Ripley, widow of P.D. WANDLER, died Friday of complications
from liver disease,in Methodist Hospital, Dyersburg.Services were Sunday in
Woodville Baptist Church, of which she was a member,with burial in its cemetery.
She leaves a daughter, Mary Jane SMITH; three brothers, Algie SUMMAR, Clyde
Jr.,SUMMAR & James SUMMAR, of Ripley;  three sisters, Evelyn ROSE and Ruby
SHELTON of Ripley, and Maggie BURKS, of Memphis; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-
grandchildren.


LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSE JANUARY 11th,1924 ***A TRIBUTE***On
December 3rd.1923,the Death Angel visited the Blytheville,Ark.,claiming one of
the most mature and fairest flowers in the household of Mr.D.A.CRAIG.The spirit
of his dear wife and companion winged itself back to God from whence it
came,Mrs.CRAIG was born in Meckleburg County,VA.,April 6th,1868 and came here as
a child.She professed faith in Christ at the age of 12 years.she was the
daughter of P.A.& Lucy PIERCY.She was married to D.A.CRAIG on December
27th,1888.To this union was born four children;Walter,of Memphis: Mrs.John
DENNIE,of Arp; Joe,of Ripley; and Bessie Lou CRAIG,who died at the age of four
years.Her devouted companion now resides in Blytheville,Ark.One brother; two
sisters; and five grandchildren to mourn her death.Mrs.CRAIG had been in failing
health for two years.Hoping the change might help her,she left her home here on
October 26th and was carried to the home of her sister-in-law,Mrs.J.T.ALFORD in
Blytheville,where she died. Her Friend;Rev.ROACH.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RIPLEY,TENNESSEE SEPTEMBER 1,1950 DEATH COMES FOR
FORMER TURNKEY...Funeral services for David Anderson CRAIG,retired county
jailer,who died about 4:30 Monday morning at the home of a son,Joe P. CRAIG in
the Asbury community,were held at 2 Tuesday afternoon at the Mount PLeasant
Church at Arp,in which he held membership.The Rev.C.C.LEWIS conducted the
rites,burial in Mt.Pleasant cemetery. Pallbearers for Mr.CRAIG were: David
JOHNSTON, Willard NORVELL, Bud DENNIE, Lynn DENNIE, Hiram CRAIG, Marvin CRAIG,
Prentiss LATHAM, and Walter ROSE. A native of Lauderdale County,Mr.CRAIG was
originally a farmer,he served as jailer for eight years under Sheriff Andrew
CRAIG. He leaves another son, Walter CRAIG; a daughter,Mrs.John DENNIE; a
brother, Luther CRAIG; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
