HISTORY:
--------

#1

Church was organized in 1902, the idea came out of a brush arbor meeting held in
the Neville Cemetery.

According to the first book of church minutes, the church was constituted 18-
Sep-1904 and was received into the Beaverdam Baptist Association on 7-Aug-1906.

In 1953 land was donated on the Lake Jemiki Road. This would be the site of the
first pastorium.

The church voted on 7-Feb-1954, to begin a new church building. This new
sanctuary was finished in August of the same year. A Sunday School addition was
finished 23-Sep-1962.

A larger sanctuary was needed to accommodate the growth at Rocky Knoll. On 8-
Feb-1987 the third sanctuary to be occupied by members of Rocky Knoll since 1904
was dedicated. This is the present day 14,000 sq ft facility which seats
approximately 770.

The Burklein Family Life Center was completed later in 1987.

The enrollment number as of Sep-2002 is 1227.

#2

Rocky Knoll Baptist Church, Walhalla, was organized in 1902. The idea came out
of a brush arbor meeting held in Neville Community.

In 1903, Mrs. Magdalena Good gave 3/4 acres of land to build a meeting house.
W.T. Abbott was the first pastor, and J.W. Abbott was first clerk.

The first book of known minutes began in 1904. From it came this report: "The
beginning of erecting a Baptist church at or near the old Neville Semitary,
August 20, 1904". According to the same book of minutes, the church was
constituted September 18, 1904.

There have been three different auditoriums. The first in the early 1900s, the
second erected in 1953, and the third started in August 1985, and the first
service being held in it on January 25, 1987.

The pastors who have served are as follows in the order in which they served:
W.T. Abbott, 1906; L.M. Lyda, 1907-1910; W.T. Abbott, 1911-1915; W.T. Land,
1916-1917; W.M. Thompson, 1918-1919; L.M. Lyda, 1920-1924; M.J. Russell, 1925-
1928; J.F. Burriss, 1929-1930; E.A. Harrison, 1931-1932; A.L. Sanders, 1933-
1935; O.F. Owens, 1936-1937; Paul Hayes, 1938-1941; Ralph Hall, 1942-1945; Paul
Hayes, 1946-1952; Carl Rains, 1953-1964; Roy Burgner, 1964-1973; Billy C.
Compton, 1973-1980; James Kirkpatrick, 1981-1993; Walton L. Marsh, November 1993
to present.

Our church has sometimes been referred to as a lighthouse on a hill. It is our
hope that we will always be the reflected light of Christ in our ministry to
those we serve in Oconee County and the surrounding area.
