CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY:
------------------------

In 1879, an acre of land was purchased from the Perry family in the Bear Swamp
Community for nine dollars. Upon this land a wooden church was built. Thus, the
Double Springs Baptist Church was founded and organized with well over three
hundred chartered members.

There were two springs from which the church gets its name, and a pond located
at the bottom of the hill used for drinking and baptizing.

A school was built in 1890 that opened for six months a year and went from first
to sixth grades. For a time, this was the only educational institution in the
area for Blacks; for some, the only education they received.

A graveled road separated the church from the cemetery. The date of the first
burial is unknown, but those great men of faith and courage who founded the
church lie in this final place of rest.

As the years passed, the younger generation of the community began to move away,
thus causing the church's membership to decrease. Under the leadership of
Reverend William Jenkins, Deacons Preacher Young, Barry Kilpatrick and Earl
Jenkins, the church survived these changing times.

The present church was built in July of 1973 and seats about 140. Today, under
the leadership of Reverend Amos Lewis, Double Springs is prospering. The church
is a member of The Seneca River Baptist Missionary Association and supports many
other organizations and higher educational institutions. Double Springs is proud
of its heritage and contributions to the community.

Seneca River Baptist Association - 1982

Double Spring Baptist Church is located in the Bear Swamp community on Route
one, approximately three miles south west of Walhalla, South Carolina.

In 1879, an acre of land was purchased from the Perry family for the amount of
nine dollars by three deacons: Brothers William Turner, Warren McElroy, and
William Brown. Upon this acre of land a wooden structured church was built
facing west and was named Double Double Springs for the two springs located near
by.

In 1948, the wooden structured church was torn down and rebuilt with cement
blocks facing east. It was remodeled in 1964, and in 1973, it was torn down and
replaced with a larger edifice of cement blocks. The new structure, facing
north, has the bapistry, the lunch room, and classrooms on the same floor.
Brothers Jeroy Young, Albert Davis, Charles E. Wright, Woodrow Cleveland,
Richard Davis, James R. Wright and Benny Kilpatrick are greatly responsible for
the construction of this building. They serve as deacons and trustees of the
church today, (^deceased)

The Double Springs Baptist Church is a member of Union No. III of the Seneca
River Missionary Baptist Association. It is a supporter of the Foreign Mission
Board, Morris, Benedict, and Friendship Colleges, N.A.A.C.P. and the Seneca
River Improvement Association.

Today, with a membership of almost one hundred, the church is prospering under
the leadership of Reverend Oliver Thomas Hill from Greenville, South Carolina.
He has been the pastor for seven years. Because of Ills leadership, we feel, the
Double Springs Baptist Church will always be a monumental institution in the
community.
