Seekers of Religious Liberty who Fled from Silesia to Saxony and Thence to
Pennsylvania in the Years 1731 to 1737". Edited by Samuel Kriebel Brecht,

[NOTE: The Silesia referenced below was an area of Europe which
is now in southwestern Poland. Germany ceded this province to Poland
after WW II. The area borders present day Germany and the Czech
Republic. The founder of the Schwenkfelder Church, Caspar Schwenckfeld,
was born in Ossing, Silesia, which was changed to Ossig (Osiek in Polish),
and is still a small town outside of Lubin, Poland, which is outside of
Legnica (Liegnitz in German), Poland.

                     DAVID SCHUBERT (SHOEBART)

DAVID SCHUBERT (Shoebart) and his wife, MARIA TEICHMAN started to come to Pa.
with the other group of Schwenkfelders who left Haarlem on June 19, 1734, but
Mrs. Schubert died on the "St. Andrew" on Aug. 22, 1734, just one month before
the boat landed in Phila. She had injured herself a few days before while
mounting the deck. She was buried at sea. A son was also born to David and
Maria on the "St. Andrew", on June 30, and died Aug. 18, 1734, do that David
Schubert probably had more anguish and sorrow than any of the other immigrant
Schwenkfelders.

David Schubert, b. abt. 1693, d. Oct. 24, 1774, married a second time, Apr.
29, 1740, by Rev. Balthasar Hoffman to Anna KRAUSS, b. ?, d. Aug. 13, 1778,
and is buried in the Yeakle private cemetery, Hosensack, Pa.

David Schubert was naturalized Sept. 24, 1745, and on Apr. 6, 1745, he bought
land on Chestnut Hill. On Oct. 28, 1774, Christopher Schultz in a letter to
Silesia says that David Schubert of Chestnut Hill (near Germantown), died on
the 24th of that week, and was buried on the 26th. He also says that for a
number of years he was so weak that he could not even go out to visit his
neighbors. Place of burial is unknown.

Children of DAVID SCHUBERT and MARIA TEICHMAN:

1. David, b. Aug. 17, 1728, d. in Berthelsdorf, Jan. 26, 1729

2. Susanna, b. Feb. 11, 1730, d. Aug. 5, 1756, unmarried.

3. David, b. Apr. 25, 1732, d. Sept. 25, 1734, buried in Philadelphia.

4. Son, b. June 30, 1734, d. Aug. 18, 1734, buried at sea.

Children of DAVID SCHUBERT and ANNA KRAUSS:

5. Maria, b. Dec. 21, 1742, d. 1823, m. ______ Homiller.

6. Rosina, b. May 28, 1745, d. Jan 25, 1799, m. George YEAKEL, b. Nov. 19,
1738, d. June 1, 1812, s. Hans Heinrich Jaekel and Susanna Heydrick. Children:
    i. Anna, b. Nov. 20, 1769, d. Mar. 16, 1852, m. Matthias Geho.
    ii. Abraham, b. Mar. 31, 1772, d. May 17, 1835. Unmarried.
    iii. Maria, b. Apr. 4, 1776, d. Jan. 18, 1831, m. Jacob Deisher.
    iv. Jacob, b. June 6, 1778.
    v. George. b. Aug. 13, 1782, d. Dec. 31, m. Maria Deisher.

7. Melchior, b. July 9, 1747, d. Dec. 24, 1831, m. Maria KRAUSS, b. Mar. 13,
1751, d. Dec. 13, 1849, dau. Christopher Krauss and Susanna Schultz.

According to the data obtained by the Editor, it would appear that Melchior
Schubert was married twice. Records in the Schwenkfelder Hist. Lib. show that
on May 30, 1775, Melchior Schubert was married to Maria Krauss by Rev.
Christopher Schultz. Both Melchior Schubert and his wife Maria Krauss
Schubert, are buried in the Hosensack Schwenkfelder Cemetery, and according to
the dates on the tombstones, Melchior Schubert died in 1831, and Maria in 1849.

There evidently must be an error in the date of death of Maria Krauss Schubert,
for in the will of Melchior Schubert, which was probated January 17, 1832, we
find, among other items this statement: "I give and bequeath to my late wife,
Hannah James_______" which would indicate that he was married a second time to
Hannah Hames. A search of he court records failed to disclose any divorce or
separation papers granted to Melchior Schubert, and it is not likely that he
had two wives living at the same time. Hannah James Schubert was born, Aug. 8,
1757, and died Sept. 20, 1862, aged 105 years, 1 month and 12 days. She is
buried in the Evangelical Cemetery at Upper Milford, Lehigh Co., Pa.

The Editor has corresponded with several people who knew Hannah James Schubert
personally, but they have been unable to throw any light on this situation.
Mr. Charles E. Schubert of Shimerville, Pa., a grandson of Melchior Schubert,
states that he remembers seeing Hannah Schubert when he was a boy. Reuben
Schubert of Zionsville, Pa., states that he believes that Maria Krauss was
the mother of Melchior Schubert's children.
