               FIFTY-NINTH REGIMENT, P. V. - SECOND CALAVARY.
                         (Three years service)

The Second Cavalry was organized at Camp Patterson, near Philadelphia,
in September, 1861, under Colonel Richard Butler Price, Lieutenant-Colonel
Joseph P. Brinton, and Majors Charles F. Taggart and Joseph Archambault.1

On the first of April, 1862, a part of the regiment left camp and
proceeded to Baltimore, where it was soon joined by the remainder of the
command, and after being reviewed by General Dix, proceeded to Washington
on the twenty-fifth. Being here mounted and equipped, it passed into
Virginia to the front, on the twenty-seventh of June, and was assigned to
duty with the brigade of General Cooke, fit the First Reserve Army Corps.
On the twenty-sixth of July, it moved forward through Centreville,
Warrenton, Little Washington, Sperryville, and Culpeper, to Madison Court
House, where it arrived August 5th, and was assigned to the brigade of
General Buford.

Although the duties of cavalry are full of excitement and danger, and its
service is of the utmost importance to the army to which it belongs, yet it
is scarcely possible to give as clear or interesting account of its
campaigns, as can be given ofthe ponderous movements of infantry and
artillery, with their charges, and bombardments. The Second was actively
engaged in all the operations of Pope, in his unfortunate campaign of 1862,
at Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Brentsville, and Chantilly. At Bull
Run, the regiment destroyed one hundred and forty-seven car loads of Union
supplies, which it was found impossible to save from the enemy otherwise.
Captain A. N. Seip says, in his diary, that in a foray, made by a detachment
of the Second, toward Aldie, "five rebels were captured by a stuttering
bugler, who proposed to surrender himself, but it took him such a long time
to stammer out the word surrender that the rebels mistook his meaning, and
surrendered themselves instead. The bugler called loudly for help, and
gained great credit for the achievement." On the, first of October, the
regiment was transferred to the command of General Bayard. An expedition
was made towards Rappahannock Station, for the purpose of capturing the
rolling stock of the railroad, but returned unsuccessful. Then a raid was
made against a body of the enemy at Thoroughfare Gap, where a hundred
rebel, were captured. From the second of November until the close of the
year, it was constantly in the saddle, engaged in scouting and skirmishing.
On the twenty-eighth of December, it fell into an ambuscade of three
thousand open, under Wade Hampton, and was overpowered, with the loss of
more than a hundred in killed, wounded, and missing. In the spring of 1863,
it moved, on the fourth of April, to Fairfax Court House, and was assigned
to the Second brigade of Stahels Division, and, late in June, moved across
the Potomac to the Gettysburg campaign, as we have seen.

After the battle it joined in the pursuit, crossing the Potomac, and
through Manassas Gap to Warrenton. In participated in the fights at,
Culpeper, and at the fortifications on the Rappahannock, from the eleventh
of October until the fourteenth. It was employed in the usual cavalry duty
during the movement, of the Mine Run campaign, during which Major Taggart
was mortally wounded, charging at the bead of the battalion. On the
twenty-ninth of November, the regiment fought at Parker's Store, losing
thirty-five men, and inflicting heavy loss on the enemy. Winter quarters
were taken at Warrenton, from which place many of the men went, home on
veteran furlough. At, the opening of the spring campaign, it moved with the
Army of the Potomac, and performed good service to the Wilderness fight.
Then, with Sheridan, it participated in the great raid against the enemy's
communications, delivering a fierce fight against Stuart at Yellow Tavern,
near Richmond, in which action that rebel leader was mortally- wounded.
Then it was attacked by infantry at Meadow Bridge, but repulsing this, it
raided on till it reached Haxall's Landing, on the James, May 14th. After
resting a few days, it rejoined the army on the twenty-fifth, moving by way
of White House and Hanover. It fought at Hawes Shop on the twenty-eighth,
where Lee and Hampton were routed with heavy loss. Then came the successful
raid round Lees left, then the attempt to cut the enemy's lines at
Gordonsville, and the attack of Wade Hampton at St. Mary's Church, on the
twenty-fourth, where the enemy was repulsed and driven back. For a
dismounted charge, made by the Second, it received special compliment by
the division commander.

Next came its services in the campaign of Petersburg, at the exploding of
the mine, and after recrossing the river at, Bermuda Hundred, it fought at
Deep Bottom, Malvern Hill, and Charles City Cross Roads, from the
fourteenth to the sixteenth of August, and later, at Reams Station. It had
fought in sixteen general engagements since crossing the Rapidan, and was
reduced to an effective strength of not more than two hundred, Subsequently
it was engaged in the fights of Boydton Plank Road, Wyatt Farm, MeDowel15
Hill, and Five Forks, and assisted at the closing scene at Appomattox
Court House.

It formed part of the great pageant of the review of the three armies at
Washington, on the twenty-third and twenty-fourth of May, and on the
thirteenth of July, 1865, the officers and men of the Second Cavalry-all
that were left of them-were mustered out of service at Cloud, Milk,
Virginia.

1 Probably there was not, in all the Union service, during the War of the
Rebellion, a man, around whose name clung more of romance than that of
Joseph Archambault.

He was born in the year 1796, at Fontainblleu, France. Soon he was left
an orphan, and in comparatively poor pecuniary circumstances, but, through
the influence of friends of his family-which was an aristocratic one-he
gained admission to the military school, and, after graduation, was
attached to the personal suite of the Emperor, Napoleon the First. He had
previously been in the capacity of page to the Empress Josephine.

When the great chief returned from his Elban exile, Joseph became again a
member of the Imperial household, arid followed the fortunes of his
redoubtable master most faithfully. At the battle of Waterloo-June 18th,
1815-he was with the Emperor, and saw the Empire melt away before the
furious fusillade of Blucher, and when darkness closed over the lost
fortunes of the day, he lay wounded and helpless on the field. He, however,
recovered sufficiently to rejoin his great muster and friend in his
captivity, and was one of the favored ones selected to accompany the
Imperial prisoner to St. Helena. When he first surrendered himself, on the
British frigate, being directed to deliver up his sword, he broke it, and
threw the pieces into the sea, in his indignation and grief. He, remained
in St. Helena only about a year but, on being sent back to Europe, he could
no longer endure a residence in France, and so he came to the United
States, where he arrived in 1817, and, after many changes, he at last took
up his residence at Newtown, Bucks county. He was an enthusiastic
Unionist, and on the call for troops, decided to try his hand once more at
the trade of war although, when entering the service, with the Second
Cavalry, he was sixty-five years of age. He died In Philadelphia in 1824.

                     FIFTY-FIRST REGIMENT P. V.
                       (Three years service.)

The organization of this regiment was effected at Camp Curtin, under
Colonel John F. Hartranft, Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas S. Bell, and Major
Edwin Schall. The Fifty-first left Harrisburg on the eighteenth of
November, 1861, and proceeded to Annapolis, Maryland, where it embarked
on the sixth of January, 1862, with the Burnside expedition, which set sail
for North Carolina, on the ninth.

It seemed as if even old Ocean was leagued with the enemies of the Union,
for no sooner had the expedition passed outside the Capes of Virginia than
there burst upon it, such a cyclone as occurs not often in maritime
experience. For ten days the heavily freighted vessels labored through the
waste of waters, and it seemed as if each coming hour must send them to the
bottom. It was not until the seventh of February, that a landing of the
troops was effected, on Roanoke Island, which the rebels had strongly
fortified. In strong earthworks, on the northwest portion of the island,
was where our troops found them, intrenched in all almost unassailable
position, protected on all sides, by an impracticable swamp, and only to be
reached over a single causeway, which was commanded by all their tremendous
armament. The Fifty-first, as a part of Reno's Brigade, was ordered to pass
through the swamp, to the left of the causeway. But they became entangled
in the mire, and returned, only in time to take the right of Fosters line,
in the final charge which triumphantly carried the works. On the third of
March, the regiment embarked with the expedition for the capture of
Newbern. On the twelfth it lauded at Slocum's Creek, fifteen miles from
Newbern. In moving to that point, assisting in the movement of the
artillery many of the command lost their shoes in the deep mod, and, as a
consequence, were obliged to enter the next, days battle, barefooted. In
the attack Reno held the left, of the line, Foster the right, and Parke the
centre, In the enemy's position were thirteen redans . Foster attacked
their left with fury, but was over matched, Then Reno fell on their right,
and the battle raged and thundered all along the line for nearly four
hours. The Fifty-first had been held in reserve for the supreme moment, and
was now ordered to make the final charge. It was made most magnificently,
and the enemy fled before it. Fifty prisoner were captured in the redan.
Again, in tile expedition against Elizabeth City, the Fifty-first played a
prominent and gallant part, losing three killed and twenty-one wounded.

Affairs on the peninsula now assuming a menacing look, General Burnsides
command was moved to Fortress Monroe, where the Fifty-first arrived on the
eighth of July. It was now assigned to the Second Brigade, commanded by
General Edward Ferrero, who, though by profession, a dancing-master,
afterwards proved to he all excellent and gallant soldier.

On the twelfth of August, the command was transported to Fredericksburg,
on its way to join and support Pope, in his disastrous campaign of 1862.
His army, after considerable counter-marching, finally stood in line on the
old Bull Ran battle-field. In this line Reno's troops, field the left the
Fifty-first was posted in support of two or three batteries near the
position, on all eminence, and when our troops began to fail back in
disorder, this position became of the greatest importance. Against it the
enemy charged, again and again, in vain. It, was bravely held, and the army
trains, under its protection passed on in safety.

The next morning the regiment moved to Centreville and rejoined the main
body. During the march of that day, the Fifty-first held the post of honor
in retreat-that of rear guard. In the afternoon, the enemy made a sudden
attack on the batteries which were under his protection, but this attack
was gallantly met and repelled. A counter-attack was at once made by
Kearney and Reno, although it was now night. The enemy was beaten back, but
the magnificent Kearney lost his life.

From this theatre of operations, the regiment entered with Reno's Corps,
into the campaign of South Mountain and Antietam, and thence, to that of
Fredericksburg, in which battles it bravely performed its duty, as we have
seen.

From the Rappahannock, the Fifty first was moved to Fortress Monroe, and
thence, with two divisions of the Ninth Corps, to Kentucky. Thence, after a
season of post duty, in which no fight occurred, it was ordered to the
support of General Grant, at Vicksburg where it arrived on the fourteenth
of June. There, and in the vicinity, it performed laborious siege duty,
until the fall of the stronghold, on the third of July. It, participated in
the expedition of Sherman against Jackson, the Capital of Mississippi, and
occupied the city, or the eighteenth. Soon it, returned to Vicksburg, and
thence was moved back to Kentucky, to rejoin Burnside, passing through
Nicholasville, Crab Orchard, and Cumberland Gap, to Knoxville. Just at this
time Longstreet, who had been sent by Bragg from Chattanooga, was
approaching Burnsides position, his principal objective point being
Campbell's Station. It fell to the duty of Colonel Hartranft to cover with
his troops, the London road. In this, the Fifty-first did excellent
service, and aided most materially in enabling Burnside to bring his
columns safely mix the town of Knoxville. Here, in the fortifying of the
place, find in the pursuit of the enemy, when he was forced to fly, on
account of the approach of Sherman, the regiment bore a prominent and
gallant, part. It went into winter quarters at Blaine's Cross Roads, after
pursuit was no longer necessary. On January 5th, the members of the
regiment nearly all re-enlisted for an additional three years,, and orders
were received to turn face, towards the north, on veteran furlough, By way
of Camp Nelson and Cincinnati, the command reached Harrisburg, and was
there swelled in numbers, by new recruits, who were more than willing to
join a regiment of such renown.

Still attached to the Ninth Corps, the Fifty-first followed Grant into
the hell of the Wilderness, of Spottsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor,
in which last, named battle, its commander-Colonel Schall-was killed, and
was succeeded in command of the regiment, by Lieutenant-Colonel Bolton.

From there, to the front of Petersburg, it advanced, arriving there on the
seventeenth of June.

It would not be easy to give an intelligible account of all the services,
and all the deadly perils, which the heroic Fifty-first passed through, in
the incessant, sorties and attacks, which were of daily occurrence, before
that old rebel town-the Mine, the Crater-the Weldon read, Poplar Spring
Church, Reams Station, Hatchers Run, and in the engagements which finally
dropped the curtain, over the Confederate tragedy. It is enough to say that
in all these, the favorite regiment of Hartranft, gallantly sustained its
part, and that when all was over, and peace was assured, those weary
veterans of Antietam and Fredericksburg, of North Carolina and Kentucky, of
the Mississippi, the Potomac, and the James, stood proudly in line at
Alexandria, Virginia, on the twenty-seventh of July, 1865, and then and
there, received the official announcement, that their days of toil, and
night of danger, were past.

           SIXTY-FOURTH REGIMENT, P. V. - FOURTH CAVALRY.
                       (Three years service)

The Fourth Cavalry Regiment was mustered into the National Service in
October, 1861, at camp, near the Soldiers Home, at Washington, under
Colonel David Campbell, Lieutenant-Colonel, James H. Childs, and Majors
James K. Kerr, William E. Doster, and James H. Trimble. The State
colors were presented by Governor Curtin in person. After long and
wearying attempt, the Colonel succeeded in mounting the entire command, and
early in May, the regiment was ordered to join McDowell on the
Rappahannock, where, on arrival, it was assigned to the Pennsylvania
Reserve Division under McCall.

This division was soon ordered to the Peninsula, and the Fourth
accompanied it, proceeding by way of the Potomac and York rivers, and
disembarked at White House, on the Pamunkey, on the twenty-fourth of June.
One battalion ( "A," " G," "H," and "K," companies) was ordered to
garrison the post of Yorktown, and there remained till the close of the
Peninsula campaign. The other two battalions performed the usual cavalry
service during the Seven Days fight, and the entire regiment was present in
the Antietam campaign, a, has been mentioned in the account of those
operations.

After Antietam, during the fall of 1862, the Fourth was encamped near
Hancock, Maryland. One battalion under Captain Duncan, performed the
exploit, of capturing a picket reserve at Hedgeville, on the Virginia side,
and for this act, was complimented by General McClellan. Pressing on in
the command of Pleasanton, in pursuit of the rebels, it was engaged in
several severe skirmishes, from Harpers Ferry to Warrenton. The part it
took in the great battle, of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, we have
already noticed, as also in the grand struggle at Gettysburg. On its way
from the Rappahannock to take part in that great campaign, it fought at
Aldie, and in the engagements in the vicinity of Middleburg, and at
Upperville, under Kilpatrick. After Gettysburg, in the pursuit, on Virginia
soil, skirmishing and hard marching was the order of the day, and the
regiment was kept at this work without cessation. In the cavalry fight of
the twelfth of October, five miles beyond Warrenton, it fought bravely, but
was over powered, and sustained a loss of almost two hundred, in killed
wounded, and prisoners. These poor fellows saw hard times, indeed, in their
rebel captivity, at Richmond and Andersonville, the greater portion of them
leaving their bones in that accursed prison pen.

They were now too weak and exhausted to do more fighting until
reorganized and recruited, and a skirmish at Beverly Ford, and at Bristoe,
completed their service in this campaign. During the winter, the fragment
of the Fourth laid guarding the line of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad.
Meanwhile, recruits had come forward to join the regiment, by which mean,
it had become so diluted that, after the veteran furlough had been granted,
there was but little left, by which to recognize the original Fourth
Pennsylvania Cavalry. Still it went through, the Wilderness campaign with
credit. It was with Sheridan in his raid for the surprise of Richmond, and
fought well at Yellow Tavern, and in the various minor engagements.

Rejoining the army on the North Anna, the regiment found recruits and
returning veterans awaiting it, sufficient, to swell its numbers above
those of any other regiment in the corps. On the advance of the army, the
Fourth fought bravely at Hawe's Shop, on the twenty-eighth of May, and did
excellent service at the battle of Cold Harbor, four days afterward.

At the battle of Trevilian Station, which occurred during Sheridan's raid
towards Lynchburg, the regiment delivered a most gallant charge, by which
the enemy was wholly routed, though the loss to the Fourth was very severe.
Starting now for, the James River, and having in charge the army trains
which it conveyed from the White House, the division again met the enemy,
who was in strong force at St. Mary's Church; in which action the Fourth
was hotly engaged, and suffered the loss of Colonel Covode, who was
mortally wounded, and fell into the hands of the rebels. The entire loss of
the Fourth in this fight was eighty-seven, killed, wounded, and missing,
The remainder of the summer was passed by the regiment, in constant
scouting, skirmishing, and picketing. It was engaged in the actions at
Second Swamp, on the thirtieth of July, and at Jerusalem Plank Road a few
days later. At Boydton Plank Road, October 28th; and at, Hatchers Run,
December 1st; and in the second engagement at the same place, February 6th,
as well as at Grays Church, on the seventh of December, the regiment took
active and honorable par, and, on the opening of the final campaign in the
spring, it was continually on the move; fighting to the actions of
Dinwiddie Court House, and at Farmville, on the seventh of April, and was,
actually engaged with the enemy on the morning of the ninth, when, the glad
news of the great surrender, announced by flag of truce ended the fight,
and closed the Fourths campaigning forever.

After nearly twelve weeks more of peaceful duty, in North Carolina and at
Petersburg, and Lynchburg, Virginia, in charge of captured Confederate
property, the regiment, was mustered out of service at Lynchburg, on the
first of July 1865.

Roll of the Northampton company mustered with the Fourth Pennsylvania
Cavalry:
