The girls of 1778----The following has been rescued from a newspaper,
published at the time of the Revolution;
"The following droll affair lately happened at Kinderhook, New York. A
young fellow, an enemy to the liberties of America, going to a quilting
frolic, where a number of young women were collected , and the only man in
the company, began his aspersions on Congress, as usual and held forth some
time on the subject, till the girls exaperated at his impudence, laid hold
of him, stripped him naked to the waist, and instead of tar, covered him
with molasses, and for feathers took the downy tops of flags which grow in
the meadows, and coated him well, and then let him go. He has prosecuted
every one of them, and the matter has been tried before Justice SHOMAKER. We
have not as yet heard his worship's judgement. It is said that PARSON BUEL'S
daughter is concerned in the affair.

Sudden death in Church---A very sudden death occurred at Middle Spring,
near Shippensburg, on Sunday morning last. Services were being held in the
Church at Middlespring; a few minutes after the minister commenced his
sermon, MR. ANDREW FRAZER, a resident of the neighborhood, was seized with
appoplexy, and instantly expired, in his pew. MR. F. was enjoying his usual
health up to the moment of his death, Previous to entering the church , a
number of persons shook hands with him and enquired how he was. He replied
that he was very well.
The deceased was about seventy years of age, was most respectable
gentleman, and highly esteemed by all who knew him, and they were many. A
large number of friends are left to mourn over his sudden departure; among
them is a daughter (MRS. ALLEN) who but a week ago started for the far West,
little thinking that she would so soon hear the sad news of her aged father,
who she left in the enjoyment of health, was no more!
Another proof of the adage, "In this midst of life we are in death."
The funeral of MR. FRAZER took place on Tuesday morning. His remains were
interred in Middle Spring cemetery.

character happened in South Washington street in this place, on Saturday
evening last. MATYHEW, son of MR. ESAIAS Z. LITTLE, whilst in the act of
getting off a two horse wagon, loaded with wood, missed his footing upon the
doubletree, and fell to the ground, the front wheel passing over his body,
and so seriously injuring him in the spine and else where, as to cause his
death in less than an hours time.

Hagerstown Hearld----Death from Lock-jaw---MR. ISAAC WIDDIS, a stone mason
of this town, accidently tramped on a nail a week ago on Saturday last, the
nail penetrating his heel, but not causing a severe hurt nor exciting any
alarm at the time of its occurrence. A few days afterwards, however, he was
seized with lock-jaw which baffled the best medical skill and terminated his
existence on Thursday last. He was a member of Potomac Lodge of Odd Fellows,
who followed his remains to their last resting place on Friday last, and
interred them in accordance with the beautiful and impressive burial service
of that order.

Carlisle Volunteer---Death of MAJ. E. S. EGE--We perform the sad duty this
morning in announcing the sudden death of an esteemded townsman, MAJ. E. S.
EGE. On Tuesday he was enjoying his usual good health, and was in our office
about 4 o'clock, p.m., in fine spirits. At supper time he took his seat at
the table (at Patton's Hotel) and commenced conversation with the boarders
about him. After taking a sip or two of tea, his head fell forward on his
breastm and in three or four minutes he was a corpse! He did not speak after
his head fell. It is supposed he died of disease of the heart. He was in the
39th year of his age.

Suicide--We regret to announce the death of MR. ELDER McCUNE, who commited
suicide, by hanging, yesterday morning, near Middle Spring. About 10 o'clock
he was found suspended in a feeding room, in his barn. No cause is assigned
to the act. MR. McCune was engaged in erecting sheds to the barn, and on the
morning of his death spoke to procuring hands to assit in the afternoon. It
is supposed he had left home for that purpose, until found, as above stated.
The above are the paticulars, as we received them. Deceased was an
excellent man, highly esteemed throughout the community in which he lived,
and his death is lamented by a large circle of relatives and friends.

The Harrisburg Telegraph of the 12th inst., has the subjoined:--ELDER JOHN
WINEBRENNER, of this city, died last night, after a lingering illness. For
years past the deceased has been prominently connected with the "Church of
God," in various capacities. As the founder of this branch of the Christian
Church, he accomplished a vast amount of good, and was honored and esteened
by the entire membership, embracing many thousands in different States of
the Union. The deceased was a man of considerable ability and indomitable
energyn and triumphed over obstacles that would have proven impassible
barriers to many men of less determined will similarly situated. He enjoyed
the respect of our citizens generaly and his death will be sincerely
lamented.

               APPALLING CALAMITY AT PITTSBURG

Pittsburg, September 25----One of the most appalling calamities that ever
occurred here startled our citizens yesterday.
The boiler at the marble works of W. W. WALLACE exploded at 1 o'clock
this afternoon---There were one hundred men engaged in the works at the
tiemm ten or twelve of whom it is supposed were killed and several wounded.
The boiler passed through the building, reducing a part of it to a heap
of ruins, and then struck rthe front of a clothing store on the opposite
side of Liberty street, killing the proprietor, MR. ROBERT BURKERS, who was
standing in the door. His head was nearly taken off. The boiler then passed
throught the rear wall of the store into SWARTZ's Lager Beer Hall, which it
nearly demolished; and a man named WILPEIFER who was in the saloon was
killed. The boiler finally landed in the Presbyterian grave yard back of the
Hall, having passed through four walls.
