School History

A motion calling for an inquiry into the advisability of establishing a
high school was passed October 5, 1901. It was not until June 7, 1902
however, that the resolution providing for its establishment was adopted. At
the same meeting it was decided that the school should bei situated at
Morrisdale, and that provision should be made for it by building two
additional rooms to the building there. At a meeting of the school board held
July 5, 1902, Mr. R. E. Moyer, of Tower City, Pennsylvania, was chosen First
principal. The school opened its first session in the Morrisdale school
building on the 2nd day of September, 1902. Thirteen young men and women who
had qualified enrolled as students. Subsequently, because of overcrowded
conditions, it was decided to move the high school into the town hall. The
addition to the Morrisdale building was completed in August, 1903. At a
meeting of the board of directors in August of that year, Mr. W. W.
Bisenhart, of Abbotstown, Pennsylvnia, was elected Principal to succeed Mr.
Moyer. Only one of the former high school pupils enrolled for the term 1903-
04. During the early Fall, however, three others were persuaded to continue
their studies, making a total of four students for that year. For a few years
a class of grade pupils were taught by the principal of the high school. The
following year the requirement for graduation was changed from two to three
years of study. There was no graduation that year. Since then classes have
been graduated yearly. In 1910 the course was enriched and work of the school
strenghened as a result of the employment of an additional teacher. In 1913
the course of study was again

changed so as to offer four years of regular high school work. The
principal's efforts in promoting this improvement were nobly seconded by the
high school pupils, who presented the board of directors in behalf of it, a
petition signed by more than one hundred parents of school children. Mr. W.
W. Eisenhart was succeeded by Mr. R. A. Shields in 1915, who was followed by
Mr. Orville Wrigley and Mr. J. C. Coons, who was principal until 1922. Other
principals up to the present supervising principal included Arthur Allard, M.
A. Switzer, Lytle M. Wilson, Samuel W. Miller, Benjamin F. Olena, J. H. Hess,
Charles E. Miller, Walter S. Granlun, and Harry N. Hays. We have had six
county superintendents of schools in forty-seven years of school growth. E.
C. Shields, W. E. Tobias, C. A. Weisgerber, W. P. Trostle, F. R. Kniss and
present superintendent David Yingling, have served in this capacity.

On December 11, 1922, the school burned, destroying the records of the
graduates to that date. The present school was erected and opened in the fall
of 1924. A gymnasium was constructed in 1928. Four additional rooms were
added in the years 1937-38, giving the students a modern well-equipped
chemistry laboratory. At that time also much needed space was added and
showers installed in the gymnasium. In 1949, a cafeteria, a home economics
room and a nurse's room were innovated.

A dental clinic was established in 1950. It was the first of its kind
in this part of the state. The Parent-

Teachers Association sponsored this venture. They were also the original
sponsors of the school lunch project.

The following organizations are active in the school at the present
time, namely: the Athletic Association, Booster's Club, Parent-Teachers
Association, Mother's Club and the Varsity Club. The Alumni Association has
been deactivated since the beginning of World War II.

Since its establishment the school has enrolled approximately 1,550
students. 1010 students have been graduated from the school from 1905 through
the year 1951.

At the present time consolidation views concerning alliance with other
schools are being considered.

PEACE
With tottering hope the world seeks peace
As war's deep roar knows no surcease.
Our boys on Foreign shores so far
Fight hard to keep life's door ajar.

Such is the plight of men today
As they look anew to Christs' Birthday,
Through Him may each man find the light
To live in union with the right.

The good that Christ for mankind wrought
Be upper most in every thought.
And His Advent recalling thus,
May He true peace grant each of us.

—Chaplain J. L. Anderton, Lt. Col., U. S. A. F.
