  Herbert E. Donten Sr.

SR. TREMONT Herbert E. Donten, Sr., 94, passed away February 14, 2011, with his
wife Mary by his side at the Tremont Health & Rehab Nursing Center. Herbert was
born January 14, 1917, in Lebanon, the son of the late George and Matilda
Miller Donten. Herbert could accomplish anything he set his mind out to do. He
could fix just about everything. He loved to carve things out of wood, he even
made his own swing set for the children to play on, which still stands. He
loved to tell his family stories of his childhood and working on the railroad
and loved being the caretaker for his parents. He served in the United States
Army and worked at the Bethlehem Steel Foundry, then worked for the Reading
Railroad for 33 years until his retirement. His main position was a brakeman,
along with all the other duties, such as building railroad tracks and assisting
with train accidents, same as his father did before him. He is survived by his
wife, Mary Ditzler Donten of 71 years; sister, Marguerite Donten Ditzler; a son
and a daughter, Herbert Donten, Jr. and Joyce Donten Pete and their spouses,
  Jeanie and John; 10 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-
grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by
10 sisters, one brother and two great-grandchildren, Brooke Pete and John
Kirkpatrick III. He will be sadly missed by all his grandchildren, great-
grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Graveside service on Monday at 11
a.m. at Grand View Memorial Park , 500 N. Webber Street, Anvils. Thompson
Funeral Home, Inc., 126 S. 9th St., Lebanon, is entrusted with the
  arrangements.
