Sept. 4, 1917 — Oct. 28, 2005

Graveside services will be Tuesday for World War II veteran Roy W. Mehring,
88, who died Oct. 28 at his Modesto residence.

Born in Grand Island, Neb., Mr. Mehring moved to Tracy with his parents when
he was a baby. He attended Tracy High School, where he loved to play football
and basketball. He lied about his age to get into the U.S. Navy and served as
a ship’s mechanic until the end of World War II. In 1945, he married his high
school sweetheart, Mabel.

After the war, Mr. Mehring swept floors at Holly Sugar, where he worked his
way up to supervisor before retiring in 1982. He also volunteered as a Tracy
Rural firefighter from 1947 to 1983. He enjoyed woodworking and working with
his hands, and he built two of his homes. He also loved to watch sports on TV.
He never remarried after his wife died in 1983. Mr. Mehring moved to Modesto
in 2004.

Mr. Mehring is survived by his children, Mark Mehring, and his wife, Judy, and
Nancy Alves, and her husband, Ed, all of Tracy; grandchildren, Clayton Mehring
and Lisa and Eddie Alves, all of Tracy, Nicholas Mehring of Coral Gables,
Fla., and Brandi Alger of Oceanside; and great-grandchildren Natasha Mehring
of Tracy and Ryan Alger of Oceanside.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Mabel; parents, Frank and
Ethel Mehring; and siblings, Clyde and Bertha Mehring.

Tuesday’s graveside services will begin at 11 a.m. at Tracy Cemetery.
