Laverne Buller

  Laverne Elton Buller, 86, died on Wednesday, June 29, 2005 in a skilled 
nursing facility in Lodi, California. He suffered from dementia caused by a 
series of strokes. He was a skilled artisan, builder, and farmer. He was a 
peace-loving man with high moral principles. 
  He was born in Bowden, North Dakota on May 16, 1919 to Albert Buller and 
Matilda Bietz-Buller. When he was a child his family moved to a farm in 
Shafter, California. He graduated from Kern Academy and attended Pacific Union 
College in Angwin, California. He married Evelyn Dahl in Bakersfield on 
September 8, 1940. She was the love of his life for 64 years. 
  In 1944 he was drafted into the United States army. He worked as a surgical 
techician, at the 121st General Hospital in Bremerhaven, Germany until his 
discharge in 1946.
  During the 1950's he managed a 540 acre farm in Wheeler Ridge, California, 
The epicenter of the 1952 Tehachapi earthquake was near the farm, seriously 
damaging the farmland and structures. He worked around the clock to save the 
crops from dying of the summer heat, replacing underground irrigation pipes 
destroyed by the power of the quake. 
  In 1962, the family moved to Napa where they purchased a home overlooking 
Napa Creek. The home was a palate for Laverne's creativity and became a 
favorite place for family and friends to gather to enjoy the unequaled 
hospitality. He lived there until 2003 when ill health required him to move to 
Lodi. 
  He was a life long member of the Seventh-day-Adventist Church. He enjoyed 
travel, hiking, and camping. He loved the high Sierras having hiked the John 
Muir Trail, climbing both Mt. Whitney and Half Dome. He was a skilled 
photographer and documented his travels with memorable photographs. He enjoyed 
reading. He had an extensive collection and knowledge of classical music. He 
was an avid gardener and especially loved growing flowers. He was skilled in 
creating fine furniture and has left many beautiful creations for his family to 
treasure. 
  He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Lodi; two daughters, Beverly Anderson 
of Napa and Patricia Stump of Lodi; six grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren; two brothers, LeRoy Buller and Dale Buller both of Glencoe, 
California. 
  Services will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at 1:00 pm at Treadway and 
Wigger Funeral Chapel, 623 Coombs St. Napa with Paspor Marvin Wray of the Napa 
Seventh-day Adventist Church officiating.
