Co., S.C.
2 March 1869

This Indenture made this 2nd day of March 1869 between B. F. WHITTLED & wife 
Charity M. of the County of Wayne, State of North Carolina & Hazard WHITTLED & 
wife Catherine Francis of Williamsburg County, State of South Carolina of the 
first part & James W. EDWARDS of Williamsburgh said State of South Carolina of 
the Second part, Witnesseth that the said party of the first part, for the 
consideration of Ten Dollars to them paid by the said party of the Second part, 
have remised, released, bargained, sold & conveyed & by these presents, remise, 
release, bargain sell & convey, to the said party of the Second part, his heirs 
& assigns all their right, title, interest, & claim in & to the six tracts or 
parcels of land situate in the County of Lenoir in said State of North Carolina, 
bounded & described as follows: The first tract or parcel of land being that 
which was devised to the said Cicero WHITFIELD, in item thirteenth of the last 
will and testament of Lewis WHITFIELD died Grandfather of said Cicero, which was 
duly admitted to Probate and on record in said County of Lenoir as follows: all 
that part of my lands in Wheat Swamp in Lenoir County adjoining (on the east) 
lines made in the presence of Joshua MOSELY as described in Harriet CARRAWAY'S 
Legacy, BRIGHT land on the South and West and Wheat Swamp on the North, "The 
Second tract or parcel of land lying that which was devised to the said Cicero 
in the same item of said will as follows, "all the lands I hold by deed from 
Micajah BELL and W. Alexander MOSELY." The third tract or parcel of land being 
that which was devised to the said Cicero in the same item of said Will as 
follows, also that part of my CARMAR place lands lying (West and North of my 
Lafayette Plantation given in the legacy to my daughter Harriett CARAWAY, which 
said lands I hold by deed from S. B. CARRAWAY. "The fourth, the half interest 
and an undivided interest of one third of the other half of a tract or parcel of 
land being that devised to the said Cicero in the same item of said Will as 
follows "one half i value of the remaining lands which I hold by deeds from 
James KILPATRICK and Calvin TYSON and wife adjoining Harriet CARRAWAY'S legacy 
in Bog hole pocosin and the CARMER place lands" The gift tract or parcel of land 
lying that which was devised to the said Cicero in the same item of said will as 
follows, "one half of my lot at BECKTON'S old field landing, "The sixth an 
undivided interest of one third of the tracts or parcels of land being that 
which was devised to Lewis WHITFIELD (now dec'd brother to the said Cicero in 
the fourteenth item of the said will as follows, "I give devised and bequeath to 
my grandson Lewis WHITFIELD (son of Lewis S. WHITFIELD, Dec'd all my lands in 
the bank of Neuse River and Stonington Creek which lands I hold by deeds from 
William LOVICK, Reuben CLARK, and James DAUGHETY, lying on Neuse River and both 
sides of Stonington Creek, also the lands I hold by deed from Jesse JACKSON 
including the CLARK place and the Walter JACKSON, plantation and mill stead also 
the remainder of the lands which I hold by deeds from James KILPATRICK and 
Calvin TYSON and wife not before given in legacies in this will and one half of 
my lot at BECTON'S old field landing.
To have & to hold to the said party of the second part his heirs & assigns 
forever, In witness whereof the said party of the first part, B. F. WHITFIELD & 
wife Charity M. & Hazard WHITFIELD & wife Catherine Francis have hereunto set 
their hands & seals the day & date first above written.

Commissioner, of Williamsburg County, State of South Carolina, Greeting:
By virtue of Authority vested in me by the laws of the said State of North 
Carolina, you are hereby authorized to take the acknowledgment of Hazard 
WHITFIELD & wife Catherine Francis, two of the grantors of a deed to James W. 
EDWARDS & his heirs, for six tracts or parcels of land situate in said County of 
Lenoir, North Carolina, touching the execution thereof & you are requested to 
make return of your proceeding to me at my office. Given under my hand & seal of 
my office, in the town of Kinston in said County of Lenoir & State of North 
Carolina the 13th day of February, 1869.

State of South Carolina
To the Judge of Probate, Kinston, in the County of Lenoir, State of North 
Carolina
Pursuant to the foregoing Commission to me directed I have proceeded to take the 
acknowledgment of the said Hazard WHITFIELD & wife, Catherine Francis, two of 
the grantors, named in the annexed deed of conveyance (which being produced & 
exhibited before me) touching their execution of the same & the said Hazard 
WHITFIELD & wife, Catherine Francis, personally appeared before me the 2nd day 
of March 1869 & acknowledged, the due execution thereof as their act & deed & 
thereupon the said Catherine Francis being by me privately examined, separate & 
apart from her said husband, touching her free consent in the execution of the 
said deed of conveyance, she on such her examination declared that she had 
executed the same freely of her own will & accord & without any force, fear or 
under influence of her said husband or an other person & did still voluntarily 
sent thereto.
Given under my hand & seal of Office this 2nd day of March A. D. 1869.

Lenoir County, In the Probate Court
Be it remembered that on the 15th day of March 1869 before the undersigned Judge 
of Probate for said County, personally came B. F. WHITFIELD and his wife Charity 
M. WHITFIELD two of the persons described in and who signed the foregoing deed 
and acknowledged the deed execution thereof by them as their act and deed and 
therefore the said Charity M. WHITIFIELD being by the undersigned privately 
examined touching her free consent in the execution thereof doth declare on such 
her examination that she had executed the same freely of her own will and 
accord, and without any force for or under influence of her said husband or any 
other person and did still voluntarily assent thereto, Therefore let said deed  
with this certificate be registered.
