Mrs. Bobbie Jean Foster, age 68, of Gulfport, died August 1, 2008, in Gulfport. 
Mrs. Foster was born in Uri, AL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl 
Eugene Foster. Burial: Biloxi National Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Villalpando of Biloxi, MS, died August 1, 2008. She was a devoted 
military wife for 58 years. During those years they spent much of their time 
traveling the world, meeting up many times with their friends of the Burtonwood 
Association. For the past 34 years she and her husband proudly owned M & L 
Gifts in Edgewater Mall. She was also active iShe was preceded in death by her 
parents, Thomas and Mary Sharkey of St. Helens, England. Burial: Biloxi 
National Cemetery.

Buddy Woodcock, age 74, of Gulfport, MS, died August 1, 2008 in Gulfport. He 
was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Woodcock 
was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Woodcock; his parents, Wiley Woodcock, 
Sr. and Viola Bennett Woodcock. Interment: Alphose Malley Memorial Cemetery, 
Pass Christian, MS.

Sue Woodcock, age 62, of Gulfport, MS, died August 1, 2008 in Gulfport. She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Buddy Woodcock; her parents, M.L. Bergeron 
and Retha Graves Bergeron; and her sister Edith Rink. Visitation will be held 
from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 3, 2008 at Funeral Home. Services 
will be held on Monday, August 4, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Alice (Lavigne) Creel, 55, of Anniston, AL, died August 2, 2008 at her 
residence. A former resident of Picayune, MS. She is preceded in death by her 
parents, Roberts and Ena Mae Lavigne; sisters, Margie Kay Brown and Addie Mae 
Lavigne; brothers, Harold Lavigne, Hooper Lavigne and Albert “Shorty” Lavigne 
and her second husband, Arthur Delaney. Burial: Gipson Cemetery.

Mary "Elaine" LeBlanc Eaton, 60, a lifelong resident of Biloxi, died August 2, 
2008. Preceded in death by her parents, Ida and Eli LeBlanc; sister, Carriemae; 
brother, Harry and step-daughter, Mary Jane Fletcher. Interment: D'Iberville 
Memorial Park.

Lt. Col. Frederick Joiner Gaston, III, age 49 and a resident of Biloxi, MS, was 
murdered in Gastonia, NC, on Saturday, August 2, 2008, as the victim of an 
armed robbery attempt. He was born on March 27, 1959, at Johnson Air Base near 
Tokyo, Japan, and had resided in Biloxi since 1986. As a child, he lived in 
Montgomery, AL; Misawa, Japan; Biloxi, MS; and then in Gulfport, MS. Lt. Col. 
Gaston graduated from Gulfport East High School in 1977. Upon receiving his 
Bachelor's Degree in computer science from the University of Southern 
Mississippi in 1982, he became a commissioned officer in the United States Air 
Force. He also earned a Master's Degree in telecommunications from USM. After 
serving on active duty at Langley AFB, VA, and Keesler AFB, MS, he continued in 
the active reserve of the USAF and was commissioned as a Lieutenant Colonel. At 
the time of his death, he was traveling to Washington, D.C., to fulfill his 
active duty requirements in the USAF. Lt. Col. Gaston was currently serving as 
a deputy for the Jackson County Sheriff at the time of his death. He joined the 
Moss Point, MS, Police Department as an officer in early 2007 and served as the 
Interim Police Chief for Moss Point from January to late June of 2008. He was a 
Gulfport police officer for 17 years before leaving in early 2007 as a 
lieutenant. For most of his years as a police officer he had been intensely 
involved in educational and enforcement programs targeting prevention of 
alcohol abuse by drivers. Immediately after the September 11, 2001, terrorist 
attacks on New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., his Air Force 
Reserve Unit headquarters called him into special active duty assignment to 
assist with physical security planning because of his valuable law enforcement 
expertise. In his diversified roles as a communications officer with the Air 
Force and his law enforcement service, he took full advantage of all his 
knowledge and experience by using his knowledge in all areas to provide the 
most comprehensive and optimal solutions to all his endeavors. He used his 
computer skills to help move the Gulfport Police Department into the computer 
age for all patrolmen. Frederick had also provided his service for security 
detail at Barnes and Noble bookstore. He believed in serving and protecting to 
provide everyone with a safer community. Frederick believed strongly in serving 
and protecting his local community and was planning on running again for a 
Harrison County Justice Court judgeship. Visitation: St. James Catholic Church, 
366 Cowan Road, Gulfport, MS 39507. A Celebration of Life Service: St. James 
Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Biloxi National Cemetery with 
full military honors rendered by the United States Air Force. 

Dixie Lee Mize Horonzy, 63, of Saucier, died August 2, 2008 in Gulfport. Born 
February 21, 1945 to Christina Mize and the late David Early Mize. Preceded in 
death by her father; and brothers, William D. Mize and Troy A. Mize. 

Harry Glen "Cave Man" Jackson, age 49, of Gulfport, MS died in Covert, MI on 
August 2, 2008. He was the son of Lindsey (Red) and Ella (Big Ella Mae) 
Jackson, the brother of Luther Adams, Robert (Sip) Adams, Lindsey (Pwee) 
Jackson, Bishop Billy (Pastor Carolyn) Jackson, Larry Jackson, Michael (Judy) 
Jackson, Patricia Jackson, Linda Adams Howze and Kelly Lee. Harry Glen Jackson 
was laid to rest August 13, 2008 in Covert, MI, where he lived about eight 
years. 

William Knable, 66, of Gulfport, died Aug. 2, 2008 in Gulfport. 

Stanley Thomas Mitchell, 76, of Saucier, died Aug. 2, 2008 in Wiggins, Stone 
County, MS. Graveside service: Biloxi National Cemetery.

Hellen Judy Sadler Rash, died August 2, 2008, at her home on Porter Avenue, 
Biloxi. Born January 12, 1939, in Biloxi. As Director of Art and History for 
the City of Biloxi from 1975 to 1985, Judy was deeply committed to the 
betterment of her community. She headed up the Biloxi Bicentennial Commission 
and the Gulf Coast Bicentennial Coalition, as well as working on the 
restoration of Tullis-Toledano Manor and the Saenger Theatre. While in this 
position, Judy served on the board of directors of the Gulf Coast Symphony 
Orchestra, Gulf Coast Opera, Mississippi Gulf Coast Ballet and the Mississippi 
Museum of Art Board of Regents. Following her tenure with the City of Biloxi, 
she was the Director of the Harrison County Humane Society and the Director of 
the Gulf Coast Arts Council. Judy was a longtime member of the Biloxi Parks, 
Recreation and Cultural Affairs Board and the National Park and Recreation 
Association, Dogwood Garden Club and Les Masquees Carnival Association. She was 
a life member of the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Junior Auxiliary, the Daughters of 
the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and a 
member of the Gulf Coast Rolls Royce Association. Judy is preceded in death by 
her mother, Hellen Gauger Judy Sadler, and father, Earl Woodward "Pat" Sadler; 
her aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Emery Farrish Sadler and Mr. and Mrs. James 
Kenneth Sadler; and her brother, Robert McKay. Burial: Biloxi City Cemetery. 

Ms. Helena Marie Reddix, age 46, of Biloxi MS, died August 2, 2008. Helena was 
preceded in death by her adopted father Hermes G. (Bill) Reddix, Jr. and her 
maternal grandmother Hazel Lee Alford; her paternal grandmother, Odelia Burns. 
She leaves to cherish her memories her mother, Hattie (George) Thomas of 
Biloxi; her father, Charles Burnes. Services: Macedonia Missionary Baptist 
Church, Weed St., Ocean Springs, MS.

Mrs. Phyllis Strong Toche, 75, a native of Biloxi, MS, died August 2, 2008, in 
D'Iberville.  Mrs. Toche was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, 
Curtis Toche, Sr., and her parents, Rupert and Clara Strong, and two sisters, 
Lois Smith and Patricia Joyce. Interment: Biloxi City Cemetery. 

Aug 3
Lydia Maureen Bartosik, age 68, of Ocean Springs, MS, died  August 3, 2008. She 
was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Bartosik, Sr., her parents, 
Absalom and Myrtle MacDonald and a brother, Ivor MacDonald. Private services 
will be held at a later date.

William Louis Braun, 95, died August 3, 2008. Bill was born in Cincinnati, Ohio 
on February 11, 1913 to Ernest Eugene Braun and Marie Anna Pinet Hannigan 
Braun. He was the third of seven children. All four brothers: Thomas, Richard, 
Theodore and Bill, served in the military during World War II. He was awarded 
the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service during World War II. At the 
beginning of World War II, Bill was the sales manager of a regional air plane 
distributor, Tri-state Aviation. He soon joined and trained in the Royal 
Canadian Air Force. After the formation of the Army Air Corp., Bill transferred 
to the US military and was ultimately assigned a B-29 Aircraft Commander and 
the Group Operations Officer of the 315th Bomb Wing of the 20th Air Force 
stationed on Guam. Among the missions he flew, Bill was part of "The Last 
Mission." On August 14/15th, 1945, the 315th Bomb Wing flew a 16 hour and 50 
minute mission, the longest mission in history at that time, striking oil 
refining targets about 200 miles northwest of Tokyo and significantly reducing 
Japan's capacity to further fuel its military. This mission was flown 9 days 
after the atomic attack on Hiroshima and 6 days after the attack on Nagasaki. 
The end of the war was announced as their planes were returning to Guam. After 
receiving his discharge from the military with the rank of major. In 1958, he 
and Isleta moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast where they enjoyed their long 
and happy marriage, raised their daughters and made many devoted friends. Bill 
owned the Ford Dealership in Gulfport for several years. He also owned one of 
the first Vespa Scooter franchises in the US. He later began a real estate 
firm, Braun & Co. Realtors. Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, 
Isleta Gayle Braun. He is survived by his two daughters and 5 grandchildren. 
Memorial service: West University United Methodist Church. Burial: Live Oak 
Cemetery, Pass Christian MS. 

Prat E. Cambre, 74, a native of New Orleans and longtime resident of the MS 
Gulf Coast, died August 3, 2008. Prat served his country in the United States 
Coast Guard .He  moved into the banking business and retired from Hancock Bank 
after over 30 years of service. A memorial Mass for the immediate family will 
be held at a later date. 

Johnnie Willie Cochran, age 57, of Gulfport, died August 3, 2008 in Gulfport. 
Services: Haven Chapel UMC, Mills Ave., Gulfport. Burial: Biloxi National 
Cemetery.

Doris Nelson Deno (Hot Tamale Lady), 67 of D'Iberville, died August 3, 2008 in 
D'Iberville. She was affectionately know as the "Hot Tamale Lady" for 32 years 
in D'Iberville which she started in her front yard. She is preceded in death by 
her parents, Miral Nelson and Mary Bosarge Nelson, brothers, Walter and Milton 
Ware and sister, Rose Marquez. Interment: Biloxi City Cemetery. 

Mr. Larry Jones, 55, a native of Biloxi, MS, died August 3, 2008, in Biloxi. He 
was a Mason, an auxiliary policeman with the City of Biloxi and former 
volunteer fireman. Preceded in death by his father, William Jones. Memorial 
gathering: the Funeral Home, Howard Avenue, Biloxi.

Ivan Gerard Tureau, 51, of Waveland, MS died August 3, 2008 in Waveland. He is 
preceded in death by his father, Louis Tureau. Visitation: St. Clare Catholic 
Church, Waveland, MS.

Donna Jean Capdepon, 45, died August 4, 2008, in Mesa, AZ. Born on December 26, 
1962, in Gulfport, MS.She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents 
Isham and Irene Parker and her maternal grandparents, Simeon B. and Effie Mae 
Clark. Family will receive friends at Community Bible Church. Burial: Beaufort 
National Cemetery. 

Earleain Chatman, age 91, of Biloxi died August 4, 2008 in Biloxi.

Master Sergeant Willie A. Clendenon, 89, passed away August 4, 2008 after a 
long illness. Mr. Clendenon was a longtime resident of Gulfport, MS. He was 
born in McMinnville, TN. He served in the U. S. Army for 30 years and was in 
Japan during the occupation of Japan and Korea. He was a distinguished and 
decorated Army soldier.  He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-
five years, Maidie V. Clendenon. Graveside Services: Biloxi National Cemetery 
with full military honors.

Jesse Lewis Kinsey, age 74, died August 4, 2008. The eldest of six children, he 
was born October 26, 1933 in Biloxi to Lewis C. and Mary Kinsey. Shortly 
thereafter, he and his parents moved to Washington D.C. and from there back to 
the Coast where he became a permanent resident of Gulfport. He served in the 
U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his 
parents, Lewis C. and Mary Kinsey; best friend and uncle, Joseph N. Kinsey, and 
niece Mary Beth Gremar. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery, Gulfport.

Mrs. Nell Rose Maner, 84, of Biloxi, died August 4, 2008 in Biloxi, born on 
August 18, 1923 in Biloxi, MS. She graduated from Biloxi High School, Class of 
1942. In the 1950's she was Queen of Young Matrons, a Mardi Gras Society. 
Interment: Southern Memorial Park.

Richard Allen Miles, age 63, a resident of Gulfport, died August 4, 2008, in 
Houma, LA. Burial: Floral Hills Cemetery, Gulfport.

Michael D. Sanderson, Sr., age 55, a resident of Gulfport, died August 4, 2008, 
in Gulfport. He was a 1972 graduate of Gulfport High School and was a member of 
Woolmarket Baptist Church. He served in the United States Air Force. Mr. 
Sanderson is preceded in death by his parents, Randolf & Joyce Newell Sanderson 
and two brothers, Butch Sanderson and Eddie Burchfield. Burial: Biloxi National 
Cemetery.

Nhuan Tran, age 98, of Biloxi, MS died August 4, 2008 in Biloxi. Nhuan was a 
native of Vietnam and a resident of  U.S.A. since 1975.  He was preceded in 
death by his wife, Lan Vu. Survivors include three daughters and three sons, 16 
grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Interment: Biloxi City Cemetery.

Jaden Michael Webb, infant son of Aaron and Shalyia Webb, died Monday, August 
4, 2008 in Ocean Springs. He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents: 
Harold and Edith Sniffin, Linda Lou Necaise Page, Billy Joe and Clara Jean 
Webb; great-great-grandparents: Lucille Lizana, Clara and Bravo Woodcock, 
Luvelia Necaise, and Daniel Necaise. Interment: St. Joseph Cemetery, Rotten 
Bayou.

"Libby" Elizabeth Coyle, 78, died August 5, 2008. Memorial: First Presbyterian 
Church of Ocean Springs.

CPO George Franklin Rogers Jr., of Saucier, died in Gulfport on died August 5, 
2008. He was born December 3, 1923 in Biloxi. George was a US Navy veteran, 
having served 26 years which included 4 wars: WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold 
War. He retired a Chief Petty Officer. He also retired from the Biloxi V.A. He 
had two sisters and three brothers, Tressa Mae, Shirley, Kenneth, Joseph and 
James. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Helen Rogers, daughter 
Judy Marie Rogers, his father George Franklin Rogers Sr., his Mother Della Mae 
Rogers and brother Joseph Rogers. George was cremated and given full military 
honors at the Biloxi National Cemetery. There, George and Helen were laid to 
rest. 

Mrs. Nell Rose Maner, 84, of Biloxi, died August 5, 2008 at Biloxi Regional 
Medical Center. Mrs. Maner was born on August 18, 1923 in Biloxi, MS. She 
graduated from Biloxi High School, Class of 1942. In the 1950s she was Queen of 
Young Matrons, a Mardi Gras Society. Preceded in death by her husband, William 
P. Maner, Sr., (MJR). Burial: Southern Memorial Park. 

Dr. Angel Manuel Diaz - Noyola, age 61, a resident of Gulfport, MS, died August 
05, 2008, in Gulfport. Dr. Diaz was a native of Puerto Rico, born: 04/21/1947, 
attended medical school in Puerto Rico, and was a General Surgeon. His was 
preceded in death by his parents and his oldest brother. Services will be held 
in Puerto Rico at a later date.

Mr. J. W. Phillips, age 73, died August 5, 2008, in Ocean Springs. He was born 
on March 18, 1935 in Biloxi and moved to Vancleave in 1975. He was preceded in 
death by his parents, John Wilson and Lucy Lee Simmons Phillips; one daughter, 
Valerie Renee Phillips and seventeen siblings. Memorial service: Northside 
Assembly of God Church, LeMoyne Boulevard, St. Martin.

Ingrid Woehrl Andrews, age 79, died August 6, 2008 at Keesler Medical Center. A 
Biloxi resident since August 1969. Mrs. Andrews was born November 23, 1928 in 
Weiden, Germany and moved to Munich as a child. There she met and married MSgt. 
Arlington "Chuck" Andrews in 1950. Mrs. Andrews was preceded in death by her 
husband, Arlington "Chuck" Andrews; parents, Hans and Pauline Woehrl and a 
brother Horst Woehrl. Burial: Biloxi National Cemetery. 

EQCM/CMDMC(SCW) A. A. "Randy" Kuehn Jr., USN Retired, 59, of Gulfport died 
August 6, 2008 in Gulfport. He enlisted in the Navy in July 1969. During his 
32+ year career he was stationed in a wide number of locations throughout the 
world with the United States Navy Seabees. He was advanced to Master Chief 
Petty Officer while assigned to NMCB-7. Following his 1996 graduation from the 
Navy's Senior Enlisted Academy he served as the Command Master Chief of NMCB-7. 
He was selected as the Command Master Chief of the Third Naval Construction 
Brigade, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1997 representing the Pacific Fleet Seabees. 
Master Chief Kuehn was then selected to be the Senior Enlisted Advisor for the 
Seabees when he became the Command Master Chief of the Seabees and Naval 
Facilities Engineering Command in October 1998. As the "Force Master Chief of 
the Seabees" Randy was a respected voice for his beloved Seabees at the senior 
levels of the United States Navy and when he retired in 2002 his awards 
included the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medals, Navy 
Achievement Medals, and various other individual and unit awards. Mr. Kuehn was 
a life member of the Navy Seabee Veterans of America Island X-1 Gulfport, VFW 
Post 4526 Gulfport, CEC/Seabee Historical Foundation. He is preceded in death 
by his father, Alvin A. Kuehn, Sr. Burial: Biloxi National Cemetery with full 
military honors. 

Lisa Ann McKechnie, 36, of Saucier, died August 6, 2008. She was preceded in 
death by her parents, Barbara McKechnie of Ruskin, FL and Victor McKechnie of 
St. Louis, MO and her grandparents, Bertram and Romaine Stager of Apollo Beach, 
FL. Memorial service: Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. 49N, Gulfport.

Mrs. Addie Lee Magee, 76, of Gulfport, died Aug. 6, 2008. Burial: Monroe 
Memorial Park, Canal Rd. 

Mary Helen Patenotte, age 76, of Long Beach, died August 6, 2008 in Gulfport. 
She was born in Batesville, MS and had been a resident of Long Beach since 
1976. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nolan Earl Patenotte. 
Interment: Evergreen Cemetery, Gulfport.

Ida Nell Lewis, age 86, of Gulfport, died August 6, 2008. She was a native of 
Collins, Covington County, MS and had been a resident of Gulfport since 1950. 
She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Frederick J. Lewis, her 
parents, R.B. and Pearl Knight of Collins, MS; and four sisters, Verl Dossett, 
Jo Barber, Christine Ray, and Louise Faler. Interment: Floral Hills Cemetery.

Betty Burdine Staehling, 83, of Biloxi, MS, died August, 6, 2008 in Biloxi. She 
was a native and lifelong resident of Biloxi. She was MS BHS and Homecoming 
Queen in 1943 of Biloxi High School. She is preceded in death by her husband of 
50 years, Noel J. Staehling, Jr.; parents, Randall and Veda Burdine; brother 
and sister-in-law, Buddy and Geraldine Burdine and brother-in-law, Harry Lyons. 
Burial: Southern Memorial Park.

Robert M. Compton, age 68, of Gulfport, died August 7, 2008, in Gulfport. He 
was born in Lebanon, TN. He was the owner of Toby's Neon and Plastic Signs, 
Inc. in Gulfport. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ellen 
Compton; brother, Fred Compton, Jr.; and sisters, Martha Jean Sheffield and 
Barbara Compton. Burial: Floral Hills Cemetery. 

Philip James Gilbert, died August 7th, 2008. Born in Biloxi, MS, he served in 
the National Guard in Mississippi until going in the Navy, where he served 22 
years before retiring in 1971. Burial: Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans

George Frederick Jolly, 65,resident a of Brockton, MA, died August 7, 2008, at 
the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. Born December 12, 1942, 
in Biloxi, Mississippi, he was a son of the late George Jolly and Alice 
(Waddington) Durand. He was the husband of Jean P. McQuaide-Jolly of Brockton. 
Mr. Jolly served two tours of duty in the United States Marine Corp during 
Vietnam. Following cremation, a memorial gathering will be at  Russell & Pica 
Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St. (Rte. 123), Brockton, funeral Mass: Our Lady of 
Lourdes Church, 433 West St., Brockton, MA. 

Mrs. Susan (Kendricks) Martino, age 55, of Lizana, died August 7, 2008 in 
Lizana. Mrs. Martino was born in Clovis, CA.  Mrs. Martino was preceded in 
death by her husband, Kenneth Wayne Martino, and by her father, John Wesley 
Kendricks, Sr. Graveside service: Wolf River Cemetery.

Major Robert Louis Miller, Sr., age 89, died August 7, 2008 in Biloxi, MS. Bob 
was born April 19, 1919 in Cochocton, Ohio to Karl Edwin and Annette Waverly 
Miller who have preceded him in death. He was the brother of Mary Margaret 
Mahood of St. Simons Island, Georgia and Kaye Skelding of St. Thomas, Ontario, 
Canada who both preceded him in death. He was devoted to his nine children, his 
30 Grandchildren and 22 Great-Grandchildren. In 1939 he enlisted in the United 
States Army Air Corp. He was stationed at Keesler Field when it was only a tent 
base. While stationed on the Mississippi Gulf Coast he met the love of his 
life, Thelma DeMetz. They were married December 20, 1942 at St. Paul Catholic 
Church in Pass Christian, Mississippi. He was then transferred to Alconbury, 
England during World War II. While serving his country in England he received a 
Field Commission and was promoted to 2nd Lt. He returned to Keesler Field in 
1945. In 1948 he was sent to Okinawa at the onset of the Korean Conflict. Upon 
his return he briefly went into the Active Reserve and worked as a civilian at 
Keesler. After his re-enlistment he attended Officier Candidate School in 
Montgomery, AL and in 1951 was re-commissioned a 1st Lt. in the United States 
Air Force and returned to Keesler Air Force Base. He served in Iceland in 
1957/58 during the Cold War and was promoted to the rank of Captain. He 
returned to Keesler. Major Miller was the base Adjacent to General George Hardy 
at Keesler until his retirement in 1963. At his retirement he was honored with 
a full military parade and reception. Burial: Biloxi National Cemetery.

James Luther Moore, 63, died August 7, 2008. A retired member of U.S. Army, Jim 
served in the Special Forces as a Green Beret. He served three tours of duty in 
Vietnam and 13 months as a POW. During his career he earned the Silver Star, 
Bronze Star, Purple Heart, MIA-POW and the Cross-of Gallantry, the highest 
award given by the South Vietnam government. During his 24 years in the 
military, Jim earned his degree in Sociology, served as a combat medic, taught 
race relations, served as a recruiter and a recruiter trainer, and represented 
his country at the Olympic Games in Munich, Germany. He was stationed in 
various locations including the White House, Germany, Ohio, Georgia, Texas and 
Louisiana. He was profiled as a South Mississippi Hero by WLOX two days prior 
to his death. Interment with full military honors will be held at Biloxi 
National Cemetery. 

Jacqueline "Jackie" Risher, age 72, a resident of Gulfport, died August 7, 2008 
in Gulfport. Mrs. Risher was a native of Heidelberg, MS. Private services will 
be held at a later date.

Robert Paul Youngblood, 58, of Midland, GA died August 7, 2008 in Midland. He 
was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Gulfport, a graduate of North 
Gulfport High School. He was also retired from the US Army. Youngblood was 
preceded in death by his parents, Tom & Lizzie Youngblood and a sister, Lillian

Brandon Jamon Hathorn, age 21, of Gulfport, MS, died August 8, 2008 in Gulfport 
He was born November 30, 1986 to Rosetta Peters and Paul Fredrick Jones. He was 
preceded in death by his grandparents, Lovell Hathorn of Bassfield, MS, and 
Sidney & Mary Jones of Gulfport. Burial: Monroe Memorial Park.

Wayne Joseph Krohn, 80, of North Biloxi, died August 8, 2008 at his home. He 
served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Wayne owned and operated Universal Motors 
for 17 years before retiring.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 
62 years, Edna Fore Krohn and his parents, Orey and Irene Santa Cruz Krohn.

Alcide Joseph Lenormand, Jr., died August 8, 2008 in Long Beach, MS. He was 75 
years old. A.J. was a native of the Westbank of LA and a longtime resident of 
Bay St. Louis, MS. He was a Veteran having served in the U.S. Navy. He is 
preceded in death by his wife, Judith Mixon Lenormand and his son, Randy

Robert Neil "Coach" Cave, age 63, lost a two year battle with Lou Gehrig's 
disease on Friday, August 8, 2008 at his home in Pass Christian. Coach Cave 
taught and coached in the Long Beach Schools for 33 years. Coach Cave was 
preceded in death by his grandparents and by his father, John Cave. Funeral

Norma Laing, age 93, a longtime Biloxi resident, died August 8, 2008. She was

Kayleigh is survived by her loving parents, John & Jamie Newton of

Omar Thomas Chisholm Jr., born on Oct. 13, 1937, in Mobile, AL, to Omar Thomas 
Chisholm Sr. and Louise Estelle Carr Chisholm. Mr. Chisholm died at his home in 
Gulfport, MS, on Aug. 10, 2008. Mr. Chisholm was raised in Mobile, AL. He 
entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific. In 1969, Mr. Chisholm moved to 
Pascagoula, MS. Preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert 
Vincent Chisholm. Mr. Chisholm's wish was to be cremated so no funeral services 
will be held. A memorial service will be held at a later date. 

Roscoe Hines Knight, Sr. was born July 15, 1919 in Brookhaven, MS. He worked in 
the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a World War II veteran the United 
States Army. He married Alemta O. Robinson and relocated from Brookhaven, MS to 
Biloxi, MS.  Died August 10, 2008 at in Biloxi, MS at the age of 89. He was 
preceded in death by his devoted and loving wife Almeta Olivia Knight; his 
parents Louis Knight and Mary Nelson Knight; an uncle, Emanuel Brown; and two

Raymond "Generator Ray" Marek, Sr., age 75, of Gulfport, died August 11, 2008 
in New Orleans, LA. He was born December 3, 1932 in Clearwater, MN. Raymond was 
stationed at Keesler AFB in the 1950s. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. for 
two years during the Korean Conflict and then entered the U.S. Air Force where 
he served for 25 years. He retired in 1972 as a Master Sergeant from Nelis AFB 
in Las Vegas, Nevada . He returned to the Gulf Coast and resided for the past 
32 years. He owned and operated Engine and Generator Service from 1976 to 
1995.  He was preceded in death by his father, Ferdinand A Marek, mother, Edith 
M. Watts Marek; stepmother, Ora Marek; a sister, Marge Patterson; and one 
brother, Frank Marek. Graveside service: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens,

Charles Guy Bates, 61, died August 13, 2008 at his home in Biloxi, MS. He was 
born on March 21, 1947 to William and Evelyn (Cope) Bates, who preceded him in 
death in 1999. He was a veteran serving in the USAF in the Vietnam War. He was 
preceded in death by his parents and uncles, Jason Bates, Donald Bates, William 
Cope, Ed Rapp, Jim Williams, and V.F. Smith; aunts, Madeline Bates, Arlene 
Bates; grandparents, Guy and Julia Cope and Sophia and Charles Bates; niece and 
nephew, Edith Ann Cope Tear and Warren Guy Cope. A Service of Remembrance will 
take place at Crock Funeral Home, 1469 Peck St., Muskegon, MI 49441 the first 
week of September.

Wendell D. Daniel, 78, of Navarre died August 13, 2008. Mr. Daniel was a native 
of Bassett, Virginia, but had been a resident of Navarre for the past three 
years, coming here from Gulfport, MS. He dedicated 30 years of his life to the 
U.S.A.F. serving in Korea. He was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church.

Frances Mary Kovacevich, 86, of Biloxi, MS died August 13, 2008 in Biloxi. She 
was a native and lifelong resident of Biloxi and a lifetime member of St. 
Michael's Catholic Church. She was a founding member of the Slavic Benevolent 
Association Ladies Auxiliary and instrumental in producing the Slavic Ladies 
cookbook. MS Kovacevich is preceded in death by her parents, Mateo and Franina 
Kovacevich; brother-in-law, Edward Maranville. A Mass of Christian Burial: St.

Charles W. "Sonny" Thornton, age 77, passed away peacefully at home on August 
13, 2008. Mr. Thornton was known from his Taxidermist Shop. Charlie moved 
through the Boy Scouts and becoming an Eagle Scout, he mounted a dove to earn a 
Taxidermy Badge. After joining the Navy, and traveling to several ports-of-
call. Upon his discharge he returned home to Biloxi, his wife, Kathleen Murphy.

Stratigo Vlahos, 95, of Biloxi died August 13, 2008 in Mobile, AL.

Bobby Lee Williams, 78, of Biloxi, MS died August 13, 2008 in Ocean Springs. He 
was born in Wilson, NC, but made Biloxi, MS his lifetime resident's for 40 
years. Bobby Lee Williams was a retired Master Sergeant. He served 22 years in 
the Army and US Air Force. He fought in the Korean War during his Military 
Career and received many awards and medals through out his career. Burial:

Stratigo Koniditsiotis Vlahos, born October 23, 1912 in Sparta, Greece, lived 
in Biloxi, MS for 70 years, and was a proud citizen of the United States. She 
passed away peacefully at the age of 95, at the Mobile Nursing and 
Rehabilitation Center in Mobile, Alabama, on Wednesday, August 13, 2008. She 
was the beloved wife for 53 years of the late Nicholas Theodore Vlahos. Mrs. 
Vlahos was a founding member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in 
Biloxi and the ladies auxiliary, the Ladies of Agape. Burial: Southern Memorial 
Park, Biloxi.

William E. Boswell, age 74, of Biloxi, died August 14, 2008 in Biloxi. Mr. 
Boswell was born in Washington Co., IL on May 30, 1934, the son of Elza F. 
Boswell and Georgia Donaho Boswell. Mr. Boswell is survived by four sons, one 
daughter, nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. William served in 
the U.S. Navy as Petty Officer in the engine room of the Aircraft Carrier 
U.S.S. Philippine Sea, CVA-47. Two long cruises during the Korean War took 
William all over the Pacific Ocean. Mr. Boswell and his shipmates earned the 
following medals: National Defense Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean 
Service Medal (Four Stars), Good Conduct Medal, China Service Medal, Armed 
Services Reserve Medal, and a Presidential Unit Citation. Burial: Biloxi 
National Cemetery.

Lt. Robert Curry, age 39, of Woolmarket, died on duty, Thursday, August 14, 
2008 in Gulfport from a  car/motorcycle traffic accident. Lt. Curry began his 
employment with the Gulfport Police Department December 1, 1994, after having 
served his country in the United States Air Force during the Gulf War. He was 
currently serving as a lieutenant for the traffic division and district 
supervisor for Orange Grove. Lt. Curry was the current president of the 
S.T.O.R.M. organization, after serving as secretary for many years. He was a 
hostage negotiator for Gulfport Police Department and a Master DUI instructor. 
He served as a DUI officer for several years, and was also a master SFST 
instructor. Lt. Curry was a member of MLEOA, PBA, and attended Coalville United 
Methodist Church. He also worked at Harrison County Police Academy as an 
instructor. Lt. Curry held numerous law enforcement certifications and received 
numerous letters of appreciation during his career. Rob had recently been 
assigned as the Officer In Charge and operated a motorcycle every day. Lt. 
Curry was preceded in death by his father, Richard Curry; and his sister, 
Patricia Curry. Survivors include his loving wife, daughter and son. Funeral

Mrs. Maida "Sis" Geil Hill, age 82, resident of Gulfport, died August 14, 2008,

Antoinette Greblunas Gruzinskas, 94, of Wheeling, WV, formerly of Waveland, MS 
died August 14, 2008 in Wheeling, WV. She was born on February 9, 1914 in 
Scranton, PA and lived in Waveland, MS for 11 years before moving to West 
Virginia after Hurricane Katrina. She was a devoted Catholic and was a member 
of St. Clare Catholic Church in Waveland, MS. She is preceded in death by her 
husband, John Adam Gruzinskas, her parents, Anthony and Eva Gillis Greblunas,

Allen Joseph Legere, Sr., age 61, of Saucier, died August 14, 2008 in Biloxi. 
Mr. Legere served his country in the United States Army after 23 years, 
including two tours in Vietnam. He worked for the Gulfport Police Department 
for 12 years before retiring as Administrative Secretary to Chief Alan 
Weatherford. He was preceded in death by his first wife Marie Legere; and his 
parents Lovis Christine Ashworth and Hypolite Legere; and his uncle Anatole

Cornelius E. Talbert, Jr., 63, of Gulfport, MS, died August 14, 2008, 
surrounded by loving family, friends and co-workers at the VA Gulf Coast 
Veterans Health Care System in Biloxi, MS. His mother, Mamie (Sanko) Davis, 
father, Cornelius Talbert, Sr., two brothers, Leon Davis and Luke Davis, Jr., 
and one sister, Betty J. Kemp, preceded him in death. Burial: Biloxi National 
Cemetery where he will receive military honors.

Joseph A. Martire, age 69, and a resident of Biloxi, died August 16, 2008 in 
Gulfport. Born Nov. 10, 1938 in Gary, Indiana. Joseph was a resident of Chicago 
Heights, Illinois for 39 years and retired to Biloxi, MS for the last five 
years. He was veteran of the US Navy. There will be no services held. Mr. 
Martire will be buried in Steger Cemetery in Illinois. 


Elmer R. Watts, age 84, of Gulfport, MS, died Aug. 16, 2008 at home. Mr. Watts 
was born June 18, 1924 in Bothwell, MS and moved to the Gulf Coast in 1936. He 
attended Gulfport High School .He joined the Navy in 1943, and served 2 years 
with the Pacific Aircraft Unit in World War II. He was employed for 40 years 
with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Gulfport before he retired in 
1978. He was owner of Watts Western Store & Stables and a Ferrier. He was 
preceded in death by his father, Zim R. Watts, of Columbia, TN and his mother, 
Clara Roney Watts, of Gulfport, MS; and two brothers, Bascom Watts of Semmis, 
AL and Edward Watts of Long Beach, MS. Burial with Masonic Rites at Coalville

Billy E. (Cuz) Tompkins, age 82, of Saucier, died August 17, 2008, born in 
Kilmichael, MS on January 20, 1926 to James V. (JV) and Emma Lee Tompkins. 
Billy was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Virginia, Eddie Ruth, 
Bertie Mae, Dorothy, and Shirley; and three brothers, Ronald, Donald, and 
James. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years and his four children; a 
sister; a brother; sixteen grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren. “Cuz” 
was a Navy veteran. He retired in 1974 after twenty years of service from the 
Jackson Fire Department as District Chief. He then worked for the Montgomery 
County (MS) Sheriff's Department and the Kilmichael Police Department until his

Elton C. "Blackie" Blackwell, 86, of Saucier, died 8/18/2008. Mr. Blackwell

USAF Retired Norbert Robert Graczyk, died August 18, 2008. Mr. Graczyk was born 
on February 15, 1932, in Buffalo, New York, the seventh son of Polish 
immigrants, Adeline Makowska Graczyk and Francis Graczyk. Norb joined the 
United States Air Force in 1952. His distinguished twenty-one year USAF career 
included foreign tours in Japan, Vietnam, and Okinawa, and stateside tours in 
New York, Florida, Delaware and Mississippi. Mr. Graczyk served his country as 
an Accounting and Finance Specialist, with special emphasis in Military Pay and 
Travel. He was recognized as an expert in his field, held security clearance, 
and often served as instructor to military personnel. Among his awards, 
Sergeant Graczyk earned the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service 
Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Following 
his retirement in 1973, he was a member of the Air Force Reserve. Norbert was 
preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Mary, and brothers, Raymond, 
Edmond, Henry, Leonard, Richard, Frank, Daniel, and Gerald. Burial: Biloxi

Mrs. Onita Collins Pennylegion, age 92, resident of Pass Christian, died August

husband, Edward David Pennylegion; parents; granddaughter, Wanda Paugh; great

Mrs. Emiline "Emily" Freeman Senseney, of Biloxi, MS, died August 19, 2008, in

preceded in death by her husband, John W. "Johnny" Senseney, who died in 
October, 1982. In addition to her late husband, she was preceded in death by

Lidier "Cotton" Freeman, Asel "June" Freeman; twin brother, Emile Freeman; and 
half-brothers, Walter and Wallace Freeman. Mrs. Senseney and her large family 
of brothers and sisters came to Biloxi from Erath, LA in about 1930 and the 
family settled in the Point Cadet area of Biloxi. She lived her entire life 
from 1930, as a child and as an adult, on the Point until she required assisted 
living in Ocean Springs beginning shortly before Hurricane Katrina destroyed 
her home of 50 years. Interment: Biloxi City Cemetery.

Michael A. Chamberlain, 56, born in Wichita Falls, TX, died August 20, 2008, at 
his home in Gulfport, MS. He was preceded in death by his father Allen H. 
Chamberlain. Michael was a life long resident of New Orleans but had resided in 
Gulfport for the past ten years where he was Convention Sales Manager for the 
MS Gulf Coast Convention Visitors Bureau for the past eight years. He was 
current president for Hotel Sales & Marketing Assoc. International for the Gulf 
Coast Chapter. He was also a member of many professional executive associations 
including the New York Society of Association Executives and International 
Association of Exhibitions and Events. Memorial service: Greenwood Funeral

Julius Dudley, 59, of Long Beach, died August 20, 2008. Burial Mass: St.Thomas

Gerry Hamilton, 69, of Woolmarket, MS, died August 20, 2008. She is preceded in 
death by her husband of 49 years, Rodney Hamilton; parents, Maurus and Beulah

Mr. B.  B. Hayes, Sr., age 71, a resident of Saucier, died August 20, 2008, in 
Gulfport. Mr. Hayes served in the U.S. Army.  He was preceded in death by his 
parents, Jesse H. Hayes and Almeda Pearce Hayes; brother, Roland Hayes. Burial:

Mrs. Dorothy (Sepulvado) Montgomery, 78, of Biloxi, died in Zachary, LA on 
August 20, 2008, born January 25, 1930 in Noble, LA to Paul and Marcelina 
Sepulvado. Preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Paul H. and 
Herbert Sepulvado, and her sisters, Cerena Mae Logan and Catherine Rivers. She 
is survived by her husband of 57 years, Lt. Col. Russell Montgomery, USAF, 
retired, of Biloxi,  and five children. Dorothy was a resident of Biloxi for 
the last 18 years. She was a wonderful Air Force spouse, traveling the world 
and the United States while supporting her family. Burial: Biloxi National

Lance Justin Nonenmacher, age 20, of Long Beach, died August 20, 2008 in 
Gulfport. He was born in Hattiesburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, 
Roy Joseph and Teresa Rene West Nonenmacher; an uncle, Robert Nonenmacher; and

Nolon R. Saucier Sr., died August 20, 2008 in Gulfport. Nolon was preceded in

MSgt David E. Shoemake, Sr., USAF retired, age 73, of Saucier, August 20, 2008 
in Gulfport, MS. Mr. Shoemake served his country during the Korean Conflict and

Jimmy Don Alexander, a longtime Gulfport resident, died Aug. 21, 2008 in Rio de 
Janeiro, Brazil, South America. He was born in Memphis, TN and grew up in 
Jackson, MS. Prior to receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of 
Mississippi and serving in the US Marines, Jim graduated from Murrah High 
School in Jackson where he initiated his first business via The Junior 
Achievement program. The University of Mississippi School of Law awarded Jim 
his Doctor of Law degree. Jim practiced law in Gulfport. He was a founding 
member of the Bayou Bluff Tennis Club. Jim's career continued in Houston, Texas 
where he served as an International Law consultant and was pivotal in launching 
new international businesses in Ecuador and Brazil. Jim traveled widely, 
enjoyed working with heads of state in different countries and was proficient 
in various languages. Jim lived the last seven years of his life in Rio de 
Janeiro, Brazil. His father, Justus L. Alexander, passed away July 31, 2006.

Joy Michele Ben, age 42, born on April 27, 1966 in Gulfport, MS, died Thursday,

Julius "J.C." Dudley, age 59, resident of Long Beach, MS, died August 21, 2008, 
in Gulfport. J.C. was born in Elizabeth, NJ and grew up in Staten Island, NY 
and Worcester, NY. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee during the Vietnam 
War. He married Linda Wojes in 1971 in Schenectady, NY, and they moved to the 
Coast. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard "Charlie" Dudley and

Amy Beatrice Lamere, 87, of Biloxi, MS died August 21, 2008 in Ocean Springs,

Mrs. Zoe Frances Jones Butler, age 88, resident of Gulfport, died August 22, 
2008, in Ocean Springs, MS. She was born in Brinkley, Arkansas on May 1, 1920, 
and her family moved to Jackson, MS where she graduated from Central High 
School in 1938. Mrs. Butler received a vocal music scholarship to Louisiana 
State University and was involved in many musical honorary societies. She 
graduated with a degree in Radio/TV/Music. During WWII, she was a vocalist on 
the USO Tours in the Pacific. Post-War, she met George Butler at LSU, and they 
were later married in Baton Rouge, LA on June 6, 1947. She was a writer for 
several radio and TV stations in Baton Rouge in the 40's, and later worked for 
the American Red Cross in Jackson, MS. She is preceded in death by her husband, 
George Winslow Butler, Jr.; parents, Milton and Frances Jones; son, George W. 
Butler, III; two brothers and one sister. Burial will be private. 

Ruby DeShazo Conrad, age 82 and a resident of Bay St. Louis, MS, died August 
22, 2008, in Gulfport. Mrs. Conrad was born on July 1, 1926 in New Orleans, LA, 
and lived there until retiring to Bay St. Louis, MS, 19 years ago. She was the 
daughter of the late Reginald & Carmell DeShazo, Sr. She was also preceded in 
death by her siblings, Reginald, Jr., Harold, Sr., and Pearl Zulli, and her 
former husband, Robert Moore. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the 
Riemann Family Funeral Home. 

Arnold J. Lawrence, 88, of D'Iberville, MS, died August 22, 2008. Arnold was a 
WWII Veteran in the Army. He was a lifelong resident of D'Iberville. He is

OH. She became a military wife and before settling in Mississippi, lived in

Mrs. Nellie Santa Cruz Robinson, 96, of Woolmarket, died at home Saturday, 
August 23, 2008. She was born in Biloxi and lived in the Woolmarket area most 
of her life. She was a founding member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of 
Woolmarket and was honored to be the oldest member. Survivors are her sister, 
her daughter-in-law; seven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren and two 
great-great grandchildren. Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph 
and Emma Quave Santa Cruz; her brothers, Pat, Delphin, Norman and Donald;

Herbert Gleason Mapp, age 80, formerly of Gulfport and a resident of 
Washington, D.C. died Saturday, August 23, 2008 in Washington, D.C. He 
relocated after Katrina to the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C. 
He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1969 after 20 years of service, having 
served in the Korean War. Herbert was a 32nd Degree Mason with memberships in 
Orange Grove Lodge #635 F&AM, Gulfport and Washington Daylight Lodge #14, 
Washington, D.C. He was a member of Grand York Rite Bodies of MS, Gulfport 
#121, Scottish Rite of Freemasonary, Southern Juridation, Gulfport, Shriners of 
North America, Joppa Temple, Biloxi and the Country Music Association. He was 
preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Lee Archie Mapp. Burial: Biloxi National

husband; Norman Murphy in 1979, sisters; Carol Jean Davis, Mildred Thomas

John Wesley Barnes, Jr., 59, died August 25, 2008 in Biloxi ; born on August 1, 
1949 in Hermanville, MS to the late John Wesley Barnes, Sr. and the late 
Dorothy Mae Barnes. He was educated at Addison High School in Port Gibson, MS, 
where he later transferred to North Gulfport High School where he graduated. 
John was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Christopher Fritzgerald

Wesley Burns Clower, 22, of Oklahoma City, OK, died August 25, 2008. A simple

in Gulfport, MS. He was the son of Ray Clower and his wife, Chris of East Fork, 
MS, and Nan Wesley James and husband, Bill of Canton, MS. Mr. Clower is

Anna Binion White Cotten, age 88, of Ridgeland, MS died August 25, 2008 in 
Ridgeland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Stevens Cotten, 
and her parents, John Binion and Corrin Lee White. A.B. was born in 
Poplarville, MS. After graduating from Ole Miss where she was a member of the 
Kappa Delta Sorority, she married John Stevens Cotten, DDS, and they celebrated 
over fifty five years of marriage. They volunteered extensively with the 
Christian Medical Society in Honduras, ministering for a month each year for 
twenty six years. She was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church,

James Curtis Barnes, Sr., 83, of Gulfport, died August 26, 2008. Born in 
McHenry and was a lifelong resident of the Coast. He served in the U.S. Marine 
Corps and received the Purple Heart. He was a former boat captain. He was

Junius James Criddell, born Sept. 16, 2008, in Biloxi, MS. Junius volunteered 
to serve our country in the U.S. Army where he earned several awards as a 
paratrooper and other medals of honor. He was honorably discharged in 1968 
after a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was elected president of the Boilermakers 
Local 693 and served for 15 years. He was preceded in death by his father, 
James T. Criddell. Burial: Biloxi National Cemetery where he will receive 
military honors. 

Matthew M. "Matt" Hoffman, 56, of Panama City, FL, died  August 26, 2008, at a 
local hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Castle Pollard, 
Ireland, and had lived in Panama City since 1987. Matt retired as a Tech 
Sergeant after 20 years in the USAF, following in the footsteps of his 
grandfather and father. After his military service, Matt received his AA in 
nursing at Gulf Coast Community College. Matt worked a number of years in home 
health care, and last worked at Tyndall AFB Clinic as a RN Case Manager. He was 
predeceased by his father, Wylie W. Hoffman. Burial: Biloxi National Cemetery 
at a later date.

Pauline Webb Ladner, age 84, of Gulfport died  August 26, 2008 in Pass 
Christian. She was born in Mobile, AL and was a resident of the Coast for most 
of her life. She retired in 1987 as Secretary of the Training Evaluation 
Division, 3300 Technical Training Wing at Keesler Technical Training Center.

James Lynn Forrester, 69, a longtime resident of Long Beach, MS, died August

David Swanier, age 53,  born in Gulfport, MS, December 26, 1955, died Aug. 27, 
2008 in Gulfport  He was a member of St. Therese of Lisieux Parish in Gulfport. 
David graduated from Harrison Central High School and joined the Army where he 
served 4 years. He was then employed by the federal government for 24 years, 
mostly at the Veteran's Administration. David was preceded in death by his 
brother, Alvin Martin, grandmother, Lucille Swanier, grand father, Garfield 
Swanier, aunts, Cora Merrell, Velma Douglas, Joann Weston, uncles, Garfield

Cross spent most of her life on the Coast. She owned and operated Cross Grocery

Cross; her son Ronald Elliott Brown; her parents, Allen and Ruth Neal; and her

Robert (Bob) C. McBee, age 84, died August 29, 2008 in Diamondhead. Mr. McBee 
served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He 
was awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. McBee was a life-time member of the Veterans 
of Foreign Wars, the DAV (Disabled Veterans) and Chaplain of the Gulf Coast 
Purple Heart Association. Mr. McBee was preceded in death by his first wife

Ray Carter, age 84, of Woolmarket, Ms died Aug. 30, 2008, in Biloxi. He was 
born Jan. 14, 1924 in McLaurin, MS to the late John A.P. Carter and Kitty Belle 
Carter. Ray Carter was a proud combat veteran of WWII. He served in the U.S. 
Army from 1943-1945 as a machine gunner in the campaigns of Normandy (D-Day), 
Northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland and Central Europe. 
After leaving the Army, he moved to Biloxi, and later retired from the Civil 
Service at KAFB, having served as crew chief of the Fire Department. Mr. Carter 
was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a member of the Sons of 
Confederate Veterans and Sons of the American Revolution. He was preceded in 
death by his sisters: Faye Carter Morse and Annie Margaret Carter Hartfield; 
brothers: J.A.P. Carter, Burl D. Carter, Malcolm Ross Carter, and Rogers 
Carter. Burial: Coalville Cemetery. 

Mr. John Earl "Doc" Holliday, Sr., 72, of Saucier, MS, died  August 30, 2008, 
at his home. Doc was a native of Vicksburg, MS. He joined the U. S. Air Force 
and retired as Tech Sergeant after 20 years of service. After retirement he was 
employed with Civil Service at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, as a training 
instructor for 19 years. Doc was preceded in death by his father, Lamar 
Holliday and wife, Minda, of Edwards; his mother, Anna Loid Stevens Poland of 
Vicksburg, MS; and a sister, Mattie Ruth Mooney of Winona, MS. Burial: Biloxi

Uriel Ray Kennedy, Jr., 54, of D'Iberville died Sunday, August 31, 2008 in 
Biloxi.

Charles Jules "Charlie" Mires, Sr., age 75 and a resident of Gulfport, died 
August 31, 2008 in Starkville, MS. Mr. Mires was a veteran of the Korean War, 
serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis 
O. Mires, and his mother, G. Odeal Mires. Memorial Service at the funeral home. 

Mary Grace Morrison Thomas, age 83, of Gulfport, died Monday, September 1, 
2008, in Gulfport, MS. Mrs. Thomas grew up in Heidelberg, Mississippi. She 
received her Bachelors degree at Mississippi Southern College and her Masters 
at USM. Mrs. Thomas first taught in Petal Mississippi. In 1966 she moved to 
Gulfport to work as an administrator for the Harrison County School District. 
In 1969 she became a reading supervisor for Pass Christian Schools. In 1971 
Mrs. Thomas established Gulf Coast Education Center for children with learning 
disabilities. She served several terms as President of the Mississippi 
Association for Children with Learning Disabilities. She also served the 
National Association for Children with Learning Disabilities in several 
capacities and was appointed by Governor Cliff Finch to the Mississippi Board 
for Children. Mrs. Thomas was appointed by Judge Lawerence Semske as a VIP with 
the Harrison County Family Court. In 1988-1989 Bill Hyatt and Mary Grace served 
as King and Queen Fidelity XXVI with the Gulfport Elks Lodge where she was a 
long time active member with the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of 
Mississippi City United Methodist Church.  Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by 
her first husband, Orville Malcolm "Prof" Thomas; her son Malcolm 
Morrison "Mac" Thomas; and her second husband James Austin Carruth. Funeral 
services: Mississippi City United Methodist Church. Burial: Heidelberg 
Cemetery, Heidelberg, Jasper County, MS.
