Texas Henderson County October 19, 1856

Dear Brother,

I embrace this opportunity of writing to you. I'm hoping that you have received
the letter that we wrote to you stating that your dear mother departed this life
in August 1856. She died on the 10th day after she was takin sick. O Roly,
what an awful time that was to see our dear mother dying who had raised us all
and had lived with us so long in this world and felt long and dear to us. O to
think of it. What a great satisfaction it was at anytime to see or to hear from
Mamma. Mamma, mamma how sweet the name sounds. Rolly, she talked about you and
wanted to see you so bad. Rolly, all the children was withher except you and
Thomas. Thomas lived 150 miles from us. He heard of her being sick and came to
see her but he was too late. Mamma was gone before he got there. I wish you and
Thomas both had have got to seen her. Rolly, she said all the time she was sick
that was not afraid to die that she was going to heaven nearly her last words
was that all of dear children could meet in heaven for she knowed that she was
going there. Rolly, we cannot help shedding tears at the thoughts of having to
give up our dear mother, but Rolly, O what a great satisfaction it ought to be
to us to think that our dear mother has gone to a better world. Pap was taking
sick two or three before Mamma died and he was not expected to live for some
time, but he has got up and since more.

Rolly, I will send you a lock of dear mother's hair. Steven Sanders lost one his
children last week. His youngest child. It was about ten months old. Myself and
family are all well at this time. All the rest of the connections are well so
far as I know.

Dear brother, I hope these few lines may find you and family all well and doing
well. Times is hard. Money is scarce so I must bring my letter to close.

Yours respectfully,
Joseph W. Hightower

P.S. Rolly write to me as soon as you get this in hand. Direct your letter to
Browne Burrough.
Bro, give my respect to the connection all and all in Tushing? friends.

Her death was recorded in the family Bible of her son, Joseph Watts Hightower.
It reads, "Elon Hightower, August 20th, 1856, aged 59 years". Only two months
after the death of Elon, Charnell remarried Mrs Thomas Jefferson Morris of
Cherokee County, Texas. Mrs Morris or Glovina as she was called, probably met
Charnell when he visited his son, Thomas P, who also lived in Cherokee County.
Charnell and Glovina were married there on October 30, 1856, though they lived
afterward in Charnell's home in Henderson County. Several of Glovina's children
from her previous marriage lived with them. Glovina was almost twenty years
younger than Charnell, and their marriage record her name was listed as
"Lucretia Morris". Charnell fathered two children by his new wife, when he was
over 60 years old. Both of there children were born in Henderson County. (Sidney
S born in 1857 and Lucinda or Cynthia born in 1859).
