father William Sr. This would indicate that William Jr. had become of age
at this date. (Bertie C-119). Almost immediately William Jr. began to
dispose of the land he had inherited. On 31 July 1728 he sold 100 ac to
Robert Bracewell, and on the same day sold 250 ac to John Wood. Deed C-
3. In August of the same year he sold 240 ac to his step-father, Moses
Guinn (C-79) Then on 31 August 1782 William Jr. and wife Margaret
Braswell, he being the son and heir of William Bracewell decd of Bertie
Co., sold 250 ac to Thomas Daughtry, in accordance with his father's
bond. C-5.
In February of 1729, William Bracewell of Bertie Co. sold 603 ac "all the
tract where my father last lived" north of the Meherrin River, to John
Baude (Boddie). D-9.
It is apparent that by this time William Braswell was planning to move.
On 25 May 1734 he was living in Edgecombe Precinct when he sold the last
of his Bertie Co. land to Rev. John Boyd, Gentleman, minister of the
gospel in Bertie Co., 300 ac where the sd Boyd doth now live" D-150, 313.
William Braswell's kinsman Jacob Braswell and his wife Elizabeth had
preceded him to Edg Co. in 1729, having sold their land in Bertie Co. in
1727. Bertie C-360.
William X Braswell received a grant from Earl of Granville (#7) 25 Mch
1749 for 200 ac on Little Creek, a branch of Pigbasket. Chain bearers:
William Braswell, Jr and Jacob Braswell. This land was situated 2 or 3
miles above where the town of Nashville now stands.
        ***

Jacob Braswell, a younger son of the first Richard Braswell of Isle of
Wight Co., VA, was the first Braswell in the Edg. area. He received a
grant of 284 ac north of the Tar River and in an eastern direction of
Swift Creek in 1728. Deed 3-286. This tract of land, would, have been a
few miles northwest of where Tarboro now stands, probably in the area of
the Leggett community. Jacob sold his land to Robert Braswell in 1740.
Edg Deed -391. Jacob also patented 528 ac north of the Tar River in 1729
. The boundaries of this tract were marked by trees growing on the bank
of the river. Evidently this land was near the site of the present city
of Rocky Mount, as the river makes a turn just north of the city and
flows in a southwesternly direction. Jacob lived on this land for many
years, but sold part of it to Benjamin Bunn in 1748. He sold the last of
his holdings in Edg Co. 1762 and moved to Johnson Co. Edg 1-232.
About 1663, the territory now embraced by Halifax, Edgecombe, Bertie and
others were known as Albemarle Co. In 1732 a petition was presented to
the governor's Council for a new precinct south of the Roanoke River and
Fishing Creek. The petition was granted but not settled until 1741. The
new precinct was called Edg Prect. Although William Bracewell was living
in Edg Co. as early as 1734, the first record of a land grant or patent
made by him was on 21 Mar 1742, when he patented 500 ac north of Tar
River on Maple Creek in Edg Co.. Pat Bk 5-132. The next year William
Braswell secured 500 ac more north of Stony Creek, Edg Co. Pat 5-157.
These grants were located in the central section of what is now Nash Co.
Many of William Braswell's relatives began taking up land and
establishing homes and plantations in the central and western

parts of Edg Co. One of the first to arrive was Richard Braswell, who
settled in the extreme southern part of what is now Nash Co. on White Oak
Swamp. When Richard divided his property among his sons in 1747, he had
over 1000 ac and 30 slaves. This was a large number compared with the
number of slaves owned by most plantation owners in this area of the
country. Deed 3-177, Grant 13-252.
William Bracwell's brother James bought 150 ac in Edg Co. from
Christopher Ginn on 5 Jan 1741. B-50. Another James Braswell, son of
Robert Braswell Jr. was active in the co. both before and after 1769. At
that time he purchased a lot in the new town of Tarboro. Edg Deed O-294.
This was the direct ancestor of the late James Craig Braswell of Rocky
Mount..
William Braswell Senior will is dated 4 Mar 1785, proved May Court 1785,
recorded Nash Co., part L p.91 and abstracts as: wife Margaret, son
Jacob, Arthur, dau Patience West, dau Dorcas Hooks, dau Pattey Bridges,
son Samuel, son Samuel and John Chitty Senior exrs. There was a son
William not mentioned in the will as he died c.1792 proved by his dau
Morning Braswell having a guardian, Joel Exum, when taxes were listed in
1782.

This is the end of the material copied from Braswell's BRASWELL ON THE
MOVE... as the line Samuel Braswell is followed now. It would seem that
James Braswell, brother to William Braswell is the line we are interested
in, as his will proved 1760 in Edg. named a dau Sarah.

It is hoped that the compilation of the early records here might give
some insight into our female lines.

Many in the family will question why I have written in so many
miscellaneous records here. It is because the lines of Benjamin Foreman
and Benjamin Blake have not yet been connected back to the first into
N.C. and our connection to James Braswell is not established. Some lines
cannot be established from the few records that have survived to today.
But it is the records I have given here that genealogists find the
"proof" of early family connections. This proof many times is determined
by the logic found in the records. It is hoped a study of these records
may find more of our family.
