There are not sufficient records yet to tie our John W. Moore to this
area. TX 1880 Soundex was examined and none of our Moore family were
identified there.

A further comment on our Moore family: A close study of the censuses
shows John Moore had a son and two daus in 1830 who would have been ages
between 20 and 25 in 1850. These obviously were out of the home by then
and could have died as well as married and/or left the home. 1840 there
were other people in his home than his inmediate family, but the three
children of the 1830 census should then have fallen in the age group of
10 to 15. Only one boy showed in the home of this age group which could
have meant the girls had died. With John leaving Amite Co., it will be
very difficult to prove any further on his family and great caution
should be taken by the family unless a descendant can be found.

Henry Quin, father of Minerva, was son of Peter Quin Sr. who came to the
Pike Co. area (then Marion) in 1812, who was minister of the Missionary
Baptist Church, b in Ireland 1750, d 1824 in Holmesville, Pike Co.,
married Judith Robinson in Mecklenburg Co., VA and had the following

Quin (m James Garner); Mary Adaline (m Thomas Garner, bro of James);
Elizabeth Hugh Quin (m Dr. Vincent J. Wroten); Arthur G. Quin (never

William Foreman Cain is designated "General" on his tombstone. Dunbar
Rowland in the MILITARY HISTORY OF MISSISSIPPI 1803-1898, reprinted 1978,
p. 34 named the officers of the MS Militia in 1860 and on the list was
Brigadier-General, William F. Cain. Also pointed out in this reference
is that the militia system in MS was not an effective organization and
that in 1858 volunteer companies were being organized.

From HISTORY OF PIKE COUNTY MS by E. Russ Williams Jr. with complete
reprint of Pike County, MS 1798-1876 by Luke Ward Conerly, on p.145 was
printed:

General William Cain had been appointed general of the militia
organizations of South Mississippi counties, and in 1860 he ordered
a review to take place in the town of Magnolia. The Quitman Guards
were ordered out and responded, the whole company going to Magnolia,
clothed in their military uniforms, to participate in the grand
review. General Cain was handsomely uniformed and mounted on a
splendid iron-gray charger, accompanied by a numerous staff of
elegantly uniformed officers. It was a gala day in Magnolia, but
the Quitman Guards had possession, from a military point of view, of
the entire field, under direction of the commanding general. No
other troops presented themselves for review, and the history of the
occasion becomes deficient by the absence of the mass of South
Mississippi forces. Nevertheless this was a historical occasion.
It was a niche in events to follow. It was duty performed.

With the rank of general, one would suspect he had some military
experience in the Mexican War. One William L. Cain served in this war
from MS in Co. B Battalion MS Rifles (Anderson) as a private. No pension
was claimed by him or his widow and nothing further is known. As initials
are so frequently picked up in the old records incorrectly, one cannot
eliminate the possibility of this William being ours.

Nothing further was available in regard to his being a general and as to
his Civil War experience from the public library at McComb or the MS
State Archives. A request for information to National Archives brought
only information on William F. Cain, Paulding. CO., who d in Hospital at
Liberty, Va. on 20 May, 1862. The Bible record of this William Franklin
Cain can be seen in MS BIBLES AND CEMETERIES Vol.8, p.36 and is very
clearly not our William Foreman Cain. Apparently, there is no record of
our William Foreman Cain in the National Archives, Washington D.C.

The only Civil War record of a William F. Cain found in the Pike Co. area
is in an Amite Co. record of a private in Co. K 44 MS Reg. Amite Rangers.
A note made after the War in Amite Co. stated he was from Fr.Co. but was
probably Pike Co. There is not enough information on him to identify him
as our William Foreman Cain, but neither can it be determined Who else he
could be. William F. Cain was then age 55. No pension was applied for by
him or his widow.

William Foreman Cain was a member of the MS Legislature from Pike Co.
1865, 1866 and 1867.

See pages 120, and 121 for the earliest history of him.

Amite Land Entry Bk, p.30 shows him receiving 85 ac on 25 Aug 1836, the
S/2 SE/4 Sec 13 T4 R3E.

He joined by experience the Mars Hill Baptist Church 6 June 1846 and
Minerva Cain by experience 7 Dec 1852. This church is located Sec 17 T4
R6, about 4.5 miles west of Pike Co. line on Hwy 570 (Smithdale Road) to
intersection with Greensburg Road, then .2 miles north on west side.
They seemed to move back and forth to the Zion Hill Church, getting
letters of dismissal and received by letter several times in both
churches. He served as clerk in both churches. Apparently, they finally
attended church in summit where they both were buried in the Woodlawn
Cemetery.

Not much is known of his first marriage. In Vol. 3 of Casey AMITE CO MS
are found some notes from the loose probate papers. In File 158 Estate of
Paul W. Wroten, administrative Bond 1835 to John Sojourner and Huldey
Wroten with securities Robert Longmire and John F. Collinsworth. The only
way' Huldah was eligible to administer the estate of Wroten was that she
was widow of Paul W. Wroten.

In Amite Probate Record 7-277 was the following: The administrative
account of John Sojourner and W. F. Cain, adm. in right of his wife Hulda
Cain formerly Hulda Roten of Paul (Wroten? part missing in margin)
rendered on final settlement. The administrators show to the court that
there are no? other distributees than Mrs. Cain

The family of Peter Quin was published by Madge Quin Fugler of McComb, MS

have access to the revised copy, the Quin data here is mostly from the

"THE BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL MEMOIRS OF MISSISSIPPI

Elbert B. Seale is a member of the prosperous; mercantile firm of
Seale & Byrd, of Roxie, Miss., the members of which, by their excellent
management, business ability and efficiency, have built up an extensive
patronage, and have done not a little to advance the reputation the
county enjoys as a commercial center. Mr. Seale was born in Greene
county, Ala, in 1827 (March 11), being the fourth of nine children born
to Wright and Nancy (Cane) Seale, who were born in Ga October 4, 1796,
and February 13, 1804, respectively. They both came with their parents to
what is now Amite county, Miss, in 1807, and were here married in 1821,
removing three years later to Greene county, Ala, where they resided
until 1832. At this date they returned to Amite county, and here Mrs.
Seale was called from life in 1842. A year later Mr. Seale was married to
Catherine Whittington, and in 1844 took up his abode in Franklin county,
settling two miles south of the present town of Roxie, where be was
called from earth in December, 1865. He had been a member of the Baptist
church since 1828, and was a successful and practical farmer and a man of
sound views, notwithstanding the fact that he received a limited
education in early life. Thomas Seale, his father, was born in Georgia on
the 7th of July, 1759, and was married five times. He was a private
soldier during the Revolutionary war, was a planter by occupation, and
died in Greene county, Ala, November 12, 1825. He was the father of
fourteen children. The maternal grandfather, John Cane, was a Georgian,
born Jan. 24, 1751. In 1807 he brought his family to Amite county and
improved a good place on Amite river. He died there about 1847. Elbert B.
Seale is one of six surviving members of his father's family. Elijah W.
is a planter of Morehouse parish, La., and was a soldier in the
Confederate army during the war; Pascal H. was also in the Confederate
army, and is a planter of Franklin county; Sarah J. is the wife of
Charles F. Gates; Amanda is the wife of John Chambers, and William T.,
who was a private in the Confederate army and afterward served as a
member of the board of supervisors of Franklin county, are the other
members. Elbert B. was sent to the district schools near his home when
his services were not needed on the home farm, and at the age of eighteen
years he begun farming for himself. In 1845 he was married to Miss
Lizetta, daughter of Aaron and Lucretia Van Normand, natives of Canada,
their marriage taking place on Long Island. They were early settlers of
Amite county, the father dying here in 1862 and the mother in 1851, the
former being a blacksmith by trade. Mrs. Seale was born in Liberty,
Amite county, June 24, 1830, and died, having borne four children, of
whom are living: Thomas G., and Nancy E., wife of Millard F. Byrd. His
second union took place on the 23d of November, 1881, Mrs. Elizabeth
Buffkin, a daughter of James Carlisle, becoming his wife. Mr. Carlisle
died in Lawrence county, this state, in 1844, having come thither from
Georgia. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, was with Jackson at New
Orleans, was an earnest member of the Baptist church, and was an honest
and upright citizen. His wife, formerly Miss Mary Bishop, was born in the
state of Georgia, dying in Lawrence county in 1840, also a member of the
Baptist church. Mrs. Seale was born in that county in 1830, and in 1850
was married. there to Solomon Buffkin, who was born in Copiah county and
died in Franklin county in December, 1877, she having borne him two
daughters. When first married Mr. Seale resided for eight years in
Liberty and kept a hotel. He then came to Franklin county and engaged in
farming and merchandising six miles east of Roxie, where he continued
until 1877, at which time he moved to the town, where he has since
conducted a general mercantile establishment. In connection with this he

owns and con ducts five hundred and seventy five acres of land, which is
in three tracts, which is excellent and valuable property. He is the
present mayor of the town, was formerly a member of the A. F. & A. M, and
for thirty years has been a member of the Baptist church, his wife having
been a member of the same for about forty years. Mr. Seale is quiet and
unassuming in manner, but takes a deep interest in matters pertaining to
the general welfare of the county. He has never aspired to office, his
greatest aim being the advancement of the cause of Christianity.

                              THE GA CAINS

A study of the MS census records reveals the migration pattern of Hardy
Cain -- N.C. (1793), GA (1808), then MS (1810). He was not among the
first Cains into GA, but as he probably joined his kinsmen there, an
account of the earlier Cains are given here.

There was a great influx of people into GA following the Revolutionary
War because of the opening up for settlement of Indian lands as they were
ceded to the state and the inducements the state offered in cheap land in
order to get its land settled. A study of the grants of Georgia revealed
several early Cains among them, but it must be remembered too that land
was also purchased by the settlers as they moved in and found their grant
land was not in the area they wished to live or they could not find grant
land still open where they wished to settle.

All the earliest Cain grants are given here for your evaluation (with the
exception of one John who settled 1758 in Midway)
John Cain, 250 ac in Wilkes Co. bounded SE by land of Hugh Wilfon and on
all other sides by vacant land. 13 Feb., 1784. Bk DDD, p.83.
John Caine, 287.5 ac in Washington Co., bounded SE by John Eady's land
and on the other Sides by Vacant Land (On Bounty) 14 Jan. 1786. HHH-819.
John Caine, 250 ac Wilkes Co., bounded SW by Pelabs & vacant land, NW by
Daniel Purkin's and Vacant and on all other sides by vacant land. 25 Jan
1787. MMM-226.
William Cane 330 ac in Washington Co., bounded NE by vacant & Jones land,
SE by vacant and on all other sides by surveyed land.
31 Oct 1787. OOO-560.
William Cain 160 ac in Washington Co., bounded SW by Cain's land and on
the other sides by unknown land beginning at a pine and running Southerly
East Sixty chains to a pine and Southerly west Twenty three chains to a
pine and northerly west seventy three chains to a red oak and East twenty
seven chains to the Beginning. 21 Dec 1791. VVV-195
John Cain, 100 ac in Greene Co., bounded NW by Cain's Land, bounded SE by
vacant land & on the other sides by Surveyed Land. 18 Apr 1792. WWW-66.
John Cain, 123.5 ac Hancock Co., bounded NW by James Bonners and William
Cains land, NE by Wm. Cain's land, SE by Wm. Jackson's land & SW by sd
Jackson's land. 26 Apr 1803. EEEEE-366.
Morris Cain 48 ac in Wilkes Co., bounded W by Gilbert's land, S by John
Carter's land, E by Ridley's land and N by Canes Land. 20 Dec 1804.
EEEEE-950.

Comments. The words "On Bounty" means a grant because of Revolutionary
War service. But not all such grants were marked "on Bounty". GA started
out using the headright system for granting land much the same as S.C.
used. Though the amount of land could vary in certain years, it was
generally 200 ac for a head of a household, the wife not being eligible
(unless a widow) and 50 ac for each minor child and each slave, a child
over age 16

                                 Page A01
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
                              THE GA CAINS

being eligible for 50 ac in his own name. Many times additional land was
awarded as a man's family increased. The state also issued land to
persons for services rendered to the state in lieu of other payment. But
due to graft, one cannot make too accurate assessments of families using
the headright system.

Township and Range system was not in use so that these lands cannot be
too accurately located. Also, as the land was rapidly settled, boundary
lines changed as new counties were created. Wilkes Co. was opened before
the Revolutionary War but because of the War, not many people settled on
it until after the War. Washington Co. received many Revolutionary War
veterans, but due to several fires, their records are mostly lost before
1865. However, Hancock Co. was formed 1793, partly from Washington and it
seems the Cain's land then fell in Hancock. Part of Wilkes Co. fell in
Greene Co., but the Cain's there could have moved also. Our concern is
mainly with the Hancock Co. Cains.

The census records for GA were burned by the British during the War of
1812 in Washington D.C. so that the 1820 census is the first one
available which is too late to be of help to us. However, the record of
all the draws, both prize and blank, for the first or 1805 (draws made
in 1804) land lottery was preserved which gives a list of most heads of
households then. As those who had draws were required to have been an
inhabitant for at least three years, it can be assumed they had been in
the state at least since 1801 or 1802. Usually one draw meant a single
man, two draws could mean a man or woman with minor children as well as a
man, wife and children. The list of Cains is as follows:

As seen from the plats, there were Cains in neighboring Greene Co. and
they seem to be of the same Cains as the Hancock ones. Greene Co. was
formed earlier than Hancock in 1786 and took its land from Washington,
Oglethorpe and Wilkes. When Hancock was formed in 1793 it's land was
taken about half from Greene and half from Washington Co.

The 1798 Tax for Greene Co. showed in Capt M. Spears Dist.

                              THE SC CAINS

There is a record in South Carolina that seems to be important to us. It
is the will of Dempsey Cain dated 6 June 1802, recorded 21 Aug. 1802 in
Will Bk. C p. 434, Kershaw Co. In this reference is a typed copy of the
will which reads "Will of Dempsey Cain. If Please God I never Return
from my Journey, it is my wish that my Brother James act as my Executor I
Expect my Crop will pay all my Debts and when that is done I wish my
Brother James to have my Fellow John his Son Dempsey to have his wife
Call. I then wish my Sister Rebekah to have my wench Betty & Brother
William to have her Daughter Hetty & my Sifter Christin to have her
Daughter Mariah I Shall Carry Austin F. Peays Note for $300. which I wish
Given to my Brother Hardy or laid out in a negro which he pleases & an
order on Col. Thomas Taylor for $150. which I wish Collected & my Debts
paid I want my Bror Absalom to have my horse & saddle I wish my Brothers
James & Hardy to Divide my Cloths. if my Crop will pay my Debts I Out of
the order on Taylor to have fifty Dollars Apeace Given to my Sifters
Sarah & Cinthy there is a deed for a lot lying in the hands of Thos Bell
of No. Carolina & Chatham who payd tax for it the lot lies in Pitts
Borough of the Same State & County if my Father moves to this Country it
is my wish that Brother James lets him have John or Call to help work for
him until Dempsey comes of age, In Witnefs whereof - I have hearunto set
my hand this 6th June 1802. /s/ Dempsey Cain."

The typed copy then ends with the witnesses and reference: "Recorded in
Will Book C. page 434. Recorded Aug. 21st 1802. J. P. I. Alexander. Apt.
13. Pkg. 412."

In apt. 13 pkg 412 are found other loose papers. See beginning p. B- 5.
There seems to be a page missing of these papers and one wonders if there
was a codicil. The next page begins: "County the lot sold & the money
given to Brother Hardy. June 6th 1802. In the presence of
Jas. Cain /s/ Dempsey Cain
Elizabeth Cain

As the witnesses James and Elizabeth Cain were legatees of the will,
there was a need of further proof. The record continues:
"South Carolina ) Personally came Robert flow and made Oath
Kershaw District ) that he is well acquainted with the hand
writing of Dempsey Cain Deceased and well
believes that the above Signature is his handwriting. Sworn 21st Aug
1802. /s/ Robert Dow
Before me J. Alexander Ordy Kers. Dist."

not shown in the appraisement: "To 1 note of hand of three hundred

End of the papers from the file.

Comments: There is a lot of food for thought here. He begins his will
"..If..1 never return from my journey.." The History of Kershaw Co.
gives no account of an Indian War in 1802. A newspaper was being
printed in 1802 but only one copy survives, that in Oct. 1802. In view
of future events, one wonders if his family had engaged him to travel to
the MS Territory to assess the situation for them and possibly stake out
claims for them. If so, with the probation of his estate coming so soon
after the date of the will, it would not have been possible for him to
have reached this destination. See HISTORIC CAMDEN by Kirkland &
 Kennedy.

Note on p.3 this compilation that in 1811 James Cain paid taxes on his
property in Franklin Co. MS - 374 ac on Homochitto River and 21 slaves.
The next year Elizabeth Cain paid the taxes on this land and 19 slaves.
Very few records exist for Franklin Co. and there is no list of the names
of their slaves. But the only way Elizabeth could be paying taxes on
this property is that she was then the widow of James. By 1821 Dempsey
P. Cain was paying taxes on 160 ac in the same locality and 7 slave s.
160 ac and 7 slaves is 1/3 of the property of James Cain. The heirs of
James Cain were named in a suit filed 1829 and four sons were named. As
the recorded records seldom give details of suits, one can only speculate
concerning what the suit was about. But one can easily believe that this
early James Cain was the brother of Dempsey Cain of the 1802 will when
also Dempsey of S.C. named a Dempsey as son of his brother James; also a
brother Hardy and a Hardy Cain settled near James before 181 0 in
Franklin Co.

Dempsey Cain (d.1802) states his father was of Chatham Co. N.C. Hardy
Cain of MS was from Chatham Co. N.C. as will be seen in the N.C. records
and though no record exists as to the name of his father, the elder Cain
in Chatham Co. was Elisha Cain.

Other records of Kershaw Co. were examined.

The Equity Court Records index and the Deeds index of Kershaw Co.
revealed no record for Dempsey Cain. As only part of Dempsey's crop
belonged to him, he probably had leased his land.
