John Patrick Hemby was a Baptist Minister. A brief account of his
ministry is recorded in Vol. 13, MISSISSIPPI GENEALOGICAL EXCHANGE.
They secured their data from a book by L.S. Foster, published 1895.
John Patrick Hemby was born in Fr.Co., MS 2 July 1854, educated at
MS College, Clinton, then attended Southern Theological Seminary;
ordained by Union Church, Fr.Co. 27 July 1879. He was pastor at
Union and Hopewell Churches 1878 and of Wall St. Church, Natchez
1880-1881. Later he preached in Copiah, Simpson, Jefferson and
Claiborne Counties. 1895 he was located at Gloster, MS.

late Mr. and Mrs. Otho Obe Kennedy and the late Mr. and Mrs.
James R. Tate of Picayune. The bride elect graduated from
Mississippi State College for Women. Mr. Tate received his
bachelor of science degree from Mississippi State University.

of Huntsville, TX). Note earlier in this compilation that Unice Day, b
1808 m Andrew Cain, son of John Cain and the records showed she was dau
of Robert Day and this Robert Day was neighbor to Caleb Johnson but there
seemed to have been a father Robert Day on the same land. Most likely
there is Caleb Johnson blood in this Mary Butler but I do not wish to
state any further at this time.

Isaiah Cain was one of the inspectors for the election in Aug. 1824.
Amite Probate Record 3-46. He was a delegate to the Constitutional
convention 1832 at Jackson, representing Amite Co. Dunbar Rowland in
HISTORY OF MISSISSIPPI, The Heart of the South, 1925, p.565. The
delegates to the constitutional convention met at Jackson on Sep 10,
1832, its session of six weeks being held in the little two-story capitol
that continued to stand on the northeast corner of Capitol and President
streets.
On 12 Jan 1833 Isaiah Cain swore he kept the list of the purchasers at
the sale of property of John H. Causey decd. Among the purchasers were
Andrew Cain, Moses Seale, John W. Moore. Amite Probate Record 5-331.
Isaiah Cain was administrator of Thomas N. Reynolds decd. sec. Thomas
Reynolds, Elijah N. Davis, bond $10,000. Amite Probate Record 8-381. 23

A descendant of this line is Malcolm Cain of Clinton, LA. He wrote in
1955 that the Cains were originally English, a wealthy tight-knit group
who became powerful enough to concern the King. To keep his own power,
the King exiled them to the Isle of Mann. They soon got passage to
Ireland where they stayed a period of time, then returned to England and
from thence to this country.

This was apparently done as he stayed on in Parksdale, AR until he
died in 1867 of pneumonia. He was a graduate of St. Mary's College
in KY.

Gordon Cain Pickett to K.M. Cain January 8, 1961:
"May I tell you the story of how they happened to meet and know each
other. My mother was L. G. Cain, Clinton, LA. She was corresponding
with a cousin here in MS. His name was Jackson, by the way. Her
cousin made the fatal mistake of addressing the letter to Miss L. G.
Cain, Clinton, MS instead of to Clinton, LA. My father, G. L. Cain
was a student at MS College in Clinton, MS. So the postmaster gave
the letter to G. L. Cain. He opened the letter and saw that it was
not for him. So he wrote a Page

note of apology and sent the letter on to L.G. Cain, my mother, at
Clinton, LA. She answered and wanted to know who his ancestors were,
etc. This correspondence kept up quite a while, and finally G. L. Cain

married and here am I, ... and I have heard my mother say that she and my
father were about 5th cousins.

The will of Elizabeth Husbands in Amite Will Bk. 1-275 dated 21 Sep 1844,
proved 28 Oct 1844 names Ivy Trisvan Kinabrew, minor, a grandson. Ephraim
Marsalis was a witness. It appeared that Kinabrew and Husbands operated
a business. Amite Letters of Administration, Vol. 3 p.175 reveals the
father of Tresvan: Dec. Term 1842 John G. Kinabrew made bond as guardian
of the real and personal property of James Kinabrew, Leonard Kinabrew,
William Kinabrew and Tresvan Kinabrew, infant children of David Kinabrew
decd. 26 Dec 1842.

entitled FAREWELL TO THIS DAY, The Diary of Miss Frances Ann Cain
of Zion Hill, MS 1856-1858. The diary is now owned by Frances
granddaughter, Yvonne Weeks who gave permission for its
publication. She noted that Frances and her husband taught school,
and all five of their children taught at some period of their
lives.

introduction to FAREWELL TO THIS DAY, the Mogans gave

some of the early history of the Cains and Butlers, and also contributed
the following:
"Zion Hill. Once a town with a post office, Zion Hill, MS still exists as
a community and a spirit. The post office was established 1851. Frances'
father, brother and husband all served as postmasters. Her father Isaiah
was the original postmaster, followed by brother Christopher Columbus
Cain, then James E. Jagers, his wife Margaret Butler Jager (Note by ME:
He m 1st Elizabeth Cain, dau of Elijah Cain. See p.57 and 82 this
compilation.), and later W. M. Dunn, by that time Frances' husband. John
H. Jones was the husband of Frances' niece Mary A. Cotten and also was a
Zion Hill postmaster. The post office was finally discontinued in 1914,
long after Frances' death. The many diary references to Mr. Jagers and
the "office" thus have largely to do with the Central role played in the
community by the town post office but also with the close ties it had
with Frances' own family. She must have remembered being there and
helping her father from her earliest years.
"Zion Hill Baptist Church was organized 1811. Aaron Butler ('Grandpa')
was one of the constituting members. .. Except for the addition of an
educational wing to the building, Zion Hill Baptist church is still
basically the same edifice as to structure and location that Frances
attended regularly. she joined Tuesday, July 31st, 1860, and her brother
Hardy joined the same day. They were baptized along with Mary Cotten and
several others in a large group on August 6th, 1860, at water near John
H. McGehee place' (church minutes in possession of Doris Huff Stokes)."
The pages of the diary itself covers 101 pages as the Mogans reproduced
it. I copy a few of the entries here as representative of her writing.
I found every entry absorbing reading though she spent many days only
knitting, weaving, spinning, cooking, etc. but there seemed to be a
stream of people visiting all the time.
November 26th 1856 Wednesday Oh unhappy girl that I am! Will I never
again see any more peace. Here is Bud (Bro. Christopher C. Cain) going
to move away to AR and carry nearly all my happiness. I don't think I
will live many years if I keep on this way. Other girls are happy and
contented but Alas I am miserable. I think my future lot will be
misery. What ere it is, but enough of those kinds of thoughts. Grandpa
and Grandma (Aaron Butler and his wife Mary) have been here all day. I
have be en sewing and knitting this evening. I feel bad, bad enough.
December 11th 1856 Thursday Happy days! are passed away. Ma, (her
mother Mary Butler Cain) Jim (Bro.), Sis (Mary Adeline Cotten) and
myself went up to Emma's (Butler) this morning and I rode behind James
and it seems so like old times "when I used to ride behind Papa" that a
tear dropped from my eye before I was aware of it. Some say they don't
like to. think of the past but to me it is a great consolation. Some of
my happiest hours now are spend in studying and calling up old
remembrances but I am going too far, we went to help mama sew. Mrs. N
Jones and Susan Jones were there. We made a tent cloth and waggon cloth
and part of a dress all day. We ate supper and came home in the bright

moonlight for the moon was full. Bud was here when we came back. He
staid until bedtime. No more at the present.
January 13th 1857 Tuesday I sleep so sound here lately that I can
hardly get up until Ma makes me. Ma & Liz trimmed Sis a bonnet this
morning. Liz got it yesterday. It is very pretty. I have been at work
all day and my head aches and hands are chapped. Ma is calling at me.
January 19th 1857 Monday If I didn't have a time of it this
morning. I thought sure I would go to school and got everything ready
and started and got up on the hill and turned back, though it cost me a
many tear and sigh to do so. I knew Ma did not want me to go and I hope
always to obey her but I hope I will go tomorrow. I have finished my
stocking at last!
March 13th 1857 Friday It snowed today. We staid last night at our
visiting place. I was most sorry we went for Uncle Jabe (Jabes Butler)
was off on a spree and Aunt Nancy (his wife) was gone to Natchez. I
enjoyed myself very well with the girls, sat up until near midnight and
lay down and talked until the chickens crowed twice. We came home, I
helped Ma get dinner & no more, Miss F A Cain.
March 18th 1857 Wednesday We arose this morning, ate breakfast and
helped Liz (sister Elizabeth) get ready to start. It did. not take us
long, the buggy came before breakfast (Pickette Reynaulds). Then came
the parting hour and if I could have been many miles from here I would
have perhaps felt better. We gave her and Tris (Kinabrew) the parting
hands amidst sighs and tears and they started. I looked after them until
they were gone, the dear little sweet Eula. I could not bear to kiss
her when they left. But they are gone now and there is a vacancy in my
heart which no sister ever filled but Liz, now she is gone. I can only
think of her and sweet little babe. It will be many months ere I forget
her little lively smile. After they left, I fixed me a little silk
apron. I went to Mrs Jones after dinner to carry some meal home. I
must leave off for I have to get supper. It rained last night but fair
as a lily now. (See p.263 for record of Eula.)
March 20th 1857 Friday Ma, Sis and me went to the gin this morning,
got some cotton and made a mattress and then got dinner, and I have been
ironing this evening. A peddler was here. Ma got her two dresses and Sis
and me a spencer.. (Note by M.E. There was no ready to wear. When they
said dresses they meant dress lengths of material. Evening meant
afternoon, dinner the noon meal.)
May 9th 1857 Saturday A beautiful Saturday evening this is! Worth of
record, neither too warm or cold. Everything seems basking in the joys
of this pleasant even. The sun is sinking in the golden lighted vest,
clear and calm and not even a soft zephyr stir smallest leaf. All is
hushed save the notes of a few daily songsters and here I sit about as
happy as usual in the gallery in the arm chair. I have been ironing
this evening. I worked in and about the garden this morning. May I feel
as well next Saturday, amen!
July 16th 1857 Thursday Today has been as solemn a one as I ever wish
to witness. Mrs. Jagers is dead! (Elizabeth Cain, dau

of Elijah & Mary Cain, b 1825, wife of Capt James E. Jagers; bur Zion
Hill Cem.). She died last night before midnight. They sent for Ma
Awhile before she died and now she is no more. That is one good woman
that I think has gone to rest. Ma came home before breakfast and her and
I went up there and. Fide and Minerva made her burying clothes. She
looked very natural even in death though she was very poor. The coffin
came about four o'clock and we all went with her to the grave and seen
her laid away in the silent tomb. After we come back home there was an
awful cloud arose and I never saw such lightning or heard such thunder
before, but it did not rain much. I was scared so bad.
September 15th 1857 Tuesday Well after a hard days quilting we have
made a finish of the quilt after it being in nearly six weeks! I have
worked study today sure. Uncle Billy went up after Mary and Amanda today
and they called here this evening and staid an hour or so. I rec. a
letter from Amanda Hazlewood this even and I was glad sure. Nothing
more, only my head aches and Hard went to Ben J(acobs) and got some
paper and some sulphur to kill this old itch that we have.
September 16th 1857 Wednesday Well this day has passed away alike the
most of others. I hardly know what I have done though. I put a cushion
in the old rocking chair this morning and helped get dinner and this
evening I fixed my hoop over and I like it very well. Sis and I went and
grabbled some potatoes for the first. Miss F A C.
September 23rd 1857 Wednesday O! last night was indeed a joyful one.
Just as we were all seated at the supper table, some one hollowed at the
gate and we came out and "0 and behold there was Trisvan, Liz and
darling Eula. Jinny and her children and Mary Longmire, oh I nearly
cried for joy. We just pulled Liz and Eula off the horses. I didn't
hardly sleep any last night, I was so rejoiced to see them once more.
This morning we were all going with Mary to see Aunt Nancy and Cousin
William and Cousin Harriet, Sis and Mary Jane J(ones) rode up so we all
staid but Jinny and Mary, they went on. I haven't done anything today
but just knock around and nurse Eula. Grandpa and Ma came down after
dinner and a Mr Van Eaton, a candidate, taken dinner here. Mary staid at
her Ma, Jinny and Tris came back, he is sick now. Nothing but the
children are squalling, Miss F A Cain.
December 17th 1857 Thursday Well I have got about a bushel to write on
today. I went to the wedding and there was about three hundred persons
there. They were married at candle light. Mr. Taylor and Nicy both
looked very nice and so did the waiters. They had a nice supper prepared
but I did not eat much for I was studying about something else, which
was this. About dark Mary Jane Anderson and I taken a walk and she told
me she was going to run away that night with Athert Dobbyns and wanted
me to go with her, so I told her I would go but after supper was over
they all went in the house and started a play. Mary Jane and I played
until near ten o'clock and we had it all made up how we would get off
and about half after ten I slipt out at the front door and she at the
back one, and left them all busy engaged in the play. They had the
horses ready for us, and we mounted. and if we didn't leave there in a
hurry why there is no going. We came on

here and Mary Jane put on one of my calico dresses and away we started
again. Uncle Bob, Trisvan, Andrew W, Jim, Albert, Mary Jane and myself
composed the company that started out for Meadville. Well we went on and
on and I know it was the longest road that ever I travelled without
stopping. There was no light to guide us but the bright little Stars.
We rode all night and it was about three o'clock in the morning when we
got to the Homochitto River and as it was up we had to be ferried
across. They made a fire and Mary Jane and I got down and warmed good.
We staid there about an hour and started again. We arrived at Meadville
just as day was breaking. We stopped at Dr (John) Sample's. We went into
a blazing fire which was very acceptable with us. They rec. us very
kindly. I was acquainted with Margaret (Sample, a dau aged 21), they
used to live down here. Mary Jane and I then went and lay down and
rested until sunup. The men went after the license, and after we ate
breakfast Albert and Mary Jane was married. Andrew and I waited on them.
She had a silk dress and I was dressed in black. We was scared a little,
not much though. There was several of the town people came up to see
them married. So ends that scrape and me with it now. So farewell, Miss
F A Cain.
December 18th 1857 Friday Soon after they married we started for home
again. We came a very bad road which fatigued us a good deal. We got
home about two o'clock and Ma had a right nice dinner for us. They all
left after dinner but Albert and Mary Jane, her and I went up to Mr
Jagers late in the evening. Marg (Jagers) wished us both much joy and I
guess we are all rather sleepy this evening. Andrew's eyes looked like
they were about a minute high when he left. They have all taken a nap I
believe but Mary Jane and I so adieu.
June 23rd 1858 Wednesday Oh dear me, I sometimes think I am almost
tired of living, but of me what a wicked thought. It is quite plain I
am put here for some purpose and why should I complain but I cannot help
my thoughts, though I try ever so hard. There has been a beautiful
shower of rain since dinner and it reminds me of a spring shower, so
fresh and lovely does everything appear this bright even. There is a
few clouds but the goddess of day is setting in all her fair beauty and
brightness, shedding a ray of golden light on all of natures works, But
now Adieu as my thoughts appears to wander this evening.
October 5th 1858 Tuesday Nothing new as I know of today. I enjoyed
myself very much at school and took great pleasure in getting my lessons
well. I have such a good and kind teacher, I love to go to her.
So farewell to this day and all its joys and sorrows.
