                              THE MS CAINS

Shooting was going on we all (the whole Brigade) was formed in a line of
Battle, as soon as this was done, we made tracks for our Picket in double
quick but the Yankees was all gone before we got to Unionville. they had
captured our Cavalry camp, they had the whole encampment on fire when we
got in sight and all had left for they knowed we would be on them very
soon if they stayed. they thought that was _____ thing. But while this
was going on Van Dorn was making his way __ them on the left, so next day
they were surprised by him as he captured 1,200 besides killed and
wounded. It is said he captured, killed & wounded in all 2,600. I saw
the prisoners yesterday in Town when we came through the Court House yard
was full of them. they were a rough looking set, I assure you
Van Dorn captured the prisoners at Chapell Hill, 12 miles from
Unionville, This was done on Thursday and on Sunday and we, our Brigade,
Walthan & Manygolt's made a forward move towards Eagles Ville to try to
capture some more yankees as Van Dorn was to cut them off on our left and
get behind them, but he did not succeed in doing it, so we did not get to
see any Yankees that day. We went out that day from camp before we turned
back about 10 or 11 miles. _____ were situated at the same place we were
before the trouble out on the Picket. We got back yesterday evening to
our old camp and our was very axcepted last night as it was raining all
night and it is raining now at ___ found all quiet in Camp. Goshen is
mending fast. I heard that Brother Harvey has married. Jake Sample got
a letter from his Mother stating to him that Hardy was married.

Laura A. Cain was borned December 27, 1855

In 1881, obituaries mentioned deaths of Hardy Cain of Mt. Zion, and
Andrew Cain of Zion Hill. W.H. Tucker, compiler wrote: "Thus, one by
one, we are passing away, and it becomes us seriously to consider the
charge given us by the Master to 'watch'."

Hardy Cain showed on the Franklin Tax Digests:
        1835 Cain, Hardy 1 poll 1 slave
        1836 Cain, Hardy 1 poll 1 slave
        1837 Cain, Hardy 1 poll 1 slave
1838 Cain, Hardy Homochitto 1 poll 1 slave
1839 Cain, Hardy Householder 1 poll 1 slave
        1841 Cain, Hardy 1 poll 2 slaves
        1842 Cain, Hardy 1 poll 2 slaves
        1844 Cain, Hardy 3 polls 2 slaves
        1845 Cain, Hardy 4 polls 1 slave
        1848 Cain, Hardy 1 poll
        1854 Cain, Hardy 1 poll 6 slaves
He had land at least by 1836, not sure now why the land did not show on
the digests. It could be possible that due to the poor condition of the
digests, the land was not copied.

A letter 12 Sep 1954 from Mrs. G.W. Willis, Rt. 1, Hubbard, TX
revealed that Bryant Marshall Carraway was 3 days old when his
mother died; 5 years old when his father was killed by a horse. His
uncle (his mother's brother) Joseph Cotton and wife Adeline took him
and raised him. They were the only parents he knew. So he named
his first two children for them, the first Joseph Thomas and the
     second Adeline.

                              THE MS CAINS

George Monroe Cain served in Co. A, 7th Reg. CSA (Hadskey, HISTORY
OF FRANKLIN CO., MS). His pension application 4 Sep 1916 states he
was age 75, unmarried, and lived with his daughter at McCall Creek.
He was an ordained Hardshell Baptist minister at Mt. Gilead Church.
This church is located Sec. 13, T5, R5, 1.2 miles west of the
Lincoln Co. line, about 3 miles north of Hwy 98 by various farm
     roads.
The Concord Baptist Church, where George Monroe Cain and wife are
buried, land and land surrounding belonged once to the Criders. A
family cemetery was there long before the church was established. It
was called the Crider and Cain Cemetery. After the church was
founded, the church building was built at the cemetery. The land
surrounding was cleared to enlarge the family cemetery for church
use. Eventually, when enlarging the cemetery again, the Crider and
Cain locations in the cemetery were lost. They were buried at the
very end of the new cemetery.

Note: The above list of children of George Monroe Cain is a corrected
list from Mrs. Vera Cain Evans.
Published in the Meadville newspaper in 1980 in a column on Genealogy
FROM WHENCE WE CAME sent to them by Mrs. Lee R. Smith, 603 Tioga Road,
Pineville, LA 71360 and reads: This is for my dear "Lee" cousin" Mrs.
Vera Cain Evans, and anyone else researching the Cains. I read that in
1998 at Little Springs G.M. Cain and A.J. Everett were to give a
genealogical review of their families. Mr. Cain was the first to talk and
he said, "The Cains were Virginians of Scotch-Welsh descent being pioneer
settlers of Amite and Franklin counties."
The maternal part were Johnsons. They came on from Georgia in 1811. He
went on to tell about the grandfather (correction made here as they
recorded godfather) Caleb. He told about how Caleb served throughout the
Revolutionary War in the southern division. After the hostilities had
ceased, he returned to his family. The only garb he possessed was a
girdle of Osnaburgs about his lions, and he was wearing his hair in crude
Indian fashion. He was drawing a federal pension when he died in 1850
being more than a centenarian.

                              THE MS CAINS
When Mr. Cain finished talking, Mr. Everett began to speak. He said that
Mrs. Cain's side of the family was Everett. They were from North
Carolina of Irish ancestry. There were seven brothers and all served in
the Revolutionary War. None of them we re killed or wounded. They all
went to live in separate states. On the maternal side of the family were
the Felders, who were of Dutch origin. Mr. Everett said, "The old sire
being a pioneer Baptist preacher in N. La. and S. Miss., a singular
coincidence resulting in the elder Felder assisting in the ordination of
Mr. Cain's grandfather in the ministry."
..George Monroe Cain married Cassandra Adeliza Lee in 1868 She was the
only sister of my grandmother, Louretta Rebecca Lee, who married Wm.
Thad. Raulins. These sisters were orphaned at an early age, and were
raised by their aunt, Mrs. Charlie Walton Beam.

to Bude, MS.. He was son of John Rollins, who d 1 831, St. Helena
Parish, LA. The stone for the Rollins graves was erected by their
      daughter Mollie Rollins.

Absalom Wells, father of Wiley Wells, above, was the son of John
Wells and his first wife Jane Duhart. Because there are other
connections to John Wells, some data is presented here on him. John
Wells came from Burke Co., GA where he married first Jane Duhart,
dau of John Duhart and she is the mother of Absalom and Rebecca
(who m Robert Holloway). John Duhart (John Dohart) received a grant
1763 in Ebenezer, GA, where the Salzburgers were settled on grant
land set aside for their exclusive use. These were refugees mostly
from present day Austria (then the Province of Salzburg, Germany)
who were assisted by England to settle in GA. See THE SALZBURGER
SAGA by George Fenwick Jones (The Univ. of Georgia Press, Athens).
Jane Duhart died in GA and John m 2nd Susannah Young, not sure if
she was a Boykin, widow of Young, but if she had Young children,
they were not mentioned in the probate records.
In MS John first settled on Sandy Creek which was then, C. 1800, in
Adams Co., today is very near the western border of Fr.Co. There
are some graves near the place where he and his son Absalom settled
where Absalom could be buried but no Wells engraved stone was found
there. See later for map. P.215. John later moved to St. Helena
Parish, LA, settling on Sandy Creek there, leaving his sons John
and Absalom on Sandy Creek in Fr.Co. MS. The absence of so many
records at the Franklin Co. courthouse has hindered us in knowing
all the children of Absalom Wells.
