Letter from Silas Holloway Wood, who lived in Pontotoc Co., MS to his brother Thomas J. Wood of MS

Mr. T.J. Wood
Dear Bro.,
This will inform you that I am back in Brownwood. I wrote you at Junction City, Kimble Co. that I would write to you when I got here. I found the family well enough, our crops very sorry, the people in debt, money very scarce, very little in circulation. I am at a loss to determine how some people will live. No news of much interest so will proceed at once with the family record.

Our father, James H. Wood was born Feb. 29, 1786, killed by a negro and died April 22, 1848.

Our Mother was Amy Holloway, was born Dec. 19, 1801, died Jan. 30, 1857. Do not know the exact date of their marriage but it was in the early part of 1817. Our oldest Bro. William Wood was born Feb. 25, 1818 died in Arkansas in 1877, no date. Stephen H. Wood was born Nov. 13, 1820 died some time in the year 1859. Ann Elizabeth Wood was born Oct. 7, 1822 died in April 1864. She married William Rutledge.
Silas H. Wood, myself, was born Aug. 2, 1824 will be 70 years old Aug.2 if living then.  James H. Wood was born Aug. 19, 1826 was killed by outlaws during the War.  W.M.D.L. Wood was born Aug. 1828 died in Wood Co., Texas no date of death.
Moses Wood was born Feb. 18, 1831 died in Gregg Co. Tex. no date.  John Wood was born Nov. 23, 1823 was killed by Dr. E.B. Miller Dec. 24, 1856  Douglas H. Wood was born Nov. 23, 1832 died July 27, 1836 Francis Marion Wood was born Feb. 18, 1836, was killed at Atlanta, Georgia in battle July 22 1864.
Thomas J. yourself, was born Jan. 1838 will be 57 years old next Jan. if living.  Mary A. Wood was born July 29, 1840 died same day my wife died Jan. 14, 1891.

Jack, since that time my life has been a blank, I no not what is best for me to do. I visit about amongst the children, ride horseback when it suits me. But I am nor satisfide. I have two good houses and lots in town that I rent out, 320 acres pasture 7 miles from town , a few horses and cattle and about three thousand dollars loaned out at interest. A deed of trust on two good little farms and can hardly get money enough to support me. I make it a rule to pay my way as I go and not be a burden to any of my children. I have my own bed, chairs, writing desk, etc. and make my headquarters with M.L. Sanders ( Sally's husband) He is getting along well, some of the children are financially broken up. I would like very much to visit you and to spend a short time with you and others in Miss. and if I am ever able to collect what is due me and life and strength last I will most assuredly make the trip. I weigh 190 pounds but I am getting very clumsy and see that I am failing. The Lord has been very good to let me live this long. The family Bible I first bought was burned with my dwelling house in 1874. My wife and myself made this record soon after the burn and I think it is correct. Well Jack, if we never meet anymore on the earth let us try to live so that we will meet in that haven of rest prepared for all those that love and serve the Lord where we will be reunited with those loved ones who have gone on before us. May the Lord bless, guide and direct you through life and prepare you for that meeting, it is my prayer. Give my kindest regards to all inquiring friends and tell them to write me and be sure to write yourself. I will always answer your letter though I am very nervous, my eye sight and hearing are both bad, yet I am thankful to God that all is as well with me as it is. No more at present, only that I am your loving brother until death.
