AKERS 13 Nov 1906 William S Akers, age 27, son of J. Nelson Akers a merchant at 
Silver Mills PA 8 miles northeast of Flintstone, died last Wednesday (Nov 7) of 
consumption. He went to New Mexico last spring for his health but returned 
unimproved. He leaves a wife and 4 children. 

ANDREWS 04 Sep 1906 Mr & Mrs Joseph Andrews, Barton, celebrated 57 years of 
married life (6 paragraph article). Children present were: Joseph of Macon GA; 
James of Westernport MD; George, William, and Robert all of Barton MD; Mrs John 
W Young, Mrs Peter Wilson, and Mrs Emory Lewis all of Cumberland; Mrs William 
Summerville of Barton MD; unable to attend is Mrs Calvin Shockley of McComas. 

ARCHITECTURE 01 Mar 1906 Footer Dye Works to build a new building and move from 
North Liberty Street to South Mechanic Street. (Long story with photo of both 
buildings). 

BEQUEATH 09 Jun 1906 Bedford PA- Frank W Bequeath of Earlston PA died last 
Friday (01 Jun) night in his 26th year from consumption. About 2 months ago, 
divorce proceedings were filed by his wife Julia W Bequeath whom he had married 
in 1901. He had left her and later claimed to have secured a divorce. Wherefore 
she had married Charles W Cox in good faith, but now those proceedings have been 
dropped. 

BUCY 06 Mar 1906 Miss Harriett Bucy died at the home of Summerfield Hinkle at 
Rush this county yesterday morning at 11:00, aged 81 years. Her immediate 
relatives living include Mr Hanson Bucy of Irons Mt and a sister Mrs Mary A 
Hinkle also of this county. The funeral is at Mt Pleasant Church on Tuesday. 

CESSNA 16 Aug 1906 Jacob Cessna, who recently moved from the Cumberland Valley 
to Hyndman PA, died last night at 10:00 at the age of 73 years. He leaves a 
widow and these children: John K Cessna of Ridgeley WV; Benton Cessna of Mt 
Savage; Charles Cessna of Smithfield PA; Edward Cessna of South Cumberland; Mrs 
William G Gillum of near Cumberland; and Mrs Clara Jamison who lived with her 
parents. 

CLINGERMAN 13 Dec 1906 Anthony Clingerman, aged 76 years. Died a few days ago at 
Northcraft, not far from Hancock. A remarkable note is that he leaves 9 
surviving brothers and one sister, all living at this old age. 

CRAWFORD 13 Dec 1906 Mr F Samuel Crawford, A B&O yard conductor, was killed 
shortly after noon today. He was engaged in the South Cumberland yards coupling 
cars when he was caught in a jamb and squeezed in a terrible manner across the 
abdomen. He was taken to Allegany Hospital where he died shortly after 
admittance. He was about 34 years old and lived on Virginia Avenue with his wife 
and 4 children. He formerly lived in Keyser before being transferred to 
Cumberland. Gertrude Hoopengardner of Thomas WV and Mrs Hattie Goshen of 
Washington are sisters. The funeral will be in Keyser WV with burial in the 
Queens Point Cemetery. 

DEAN 28 Mar 1906 Mrs Maria Dean, widow of the late Joseph Dean, died last night 
at her home in Rush MD. She was 84 years of age and survived by 4 grown 
children: Mrs Henry North; Mrs Martin V Rice; Mrs Flake and Mr Harmon Dean. 

DICKEN 26 Jan 1906 Mr William Dicken who resided in PA near Flintstone, died 
Wednesday (24 Jan) and was buried this afternoon. He was 70 years old and a 
miller by trade and was well known. He is survived by 4 children; Mrs Frank 
Robinson and Mr Milton Dicken of Cumberland; Mrs Ella Bucy and Mr Wood Dicken of 
Davis WV; Mr Adolph Dicken of Hancock; Alonzo Dicken of PA; Kelly Dicken of 
Thomas WV; and Misses Alice and Della Dicken at home. 

DIEHL 23 Apr 1906 Mrs Amasa Diehl, wife of the late Michael Diehl, had a 
paralytic stroke on Saturday afternoon (21 Apr) and died Saturday night at her 
residence in Everett PA, aged 77 years. Her husband died about 13 years ago. She 
is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs Alice Steckman of Everett and Mrs Mary Knieriem, 
the wife of Henry Knieriem of Cumberland; and 2 sons, Henry Spang Diehl and O. 
Shannon Diehl of Everett. The funeral will take place at the Reformed Church at 
Everett. 

FLETCHER 03 Aug 1906 Personals- Mrs David Fletcher died Monday (30 Jul) at 
Woodbury, Bedford County. Mr David Fletcher is a brother of William Fletcher of 
Pratt, this county. 

GURLEY 03 Dec 1906 Mrs Lycurgus Gurley died this morning at 3:00 at her 
residence at Dicken's Mills after a weeks of illness of a complication of 
diseases, aged 63 years. She was a Miss Frantz prior to her marriage. She is 
survived by these children; TW Gurley of Myersdale PA; Dr. LM Gurley of 
Johnstown PA; HM Gurley of Lancaster PA; CR Gurley, JF Gurley, and OC Gurley 
residing at the home; Miss Clara Gurley and Mrs Walter Wentling of Cumberland; 
and Mrs RM Laing of Bedford PA. Funeral is Wednesday from Zion Church and burial 
in the Zion Cemetery. 

HARDMAN 18 Aug 1906 Hyndman Personals- Mr & Mrs JH Hardman is entertaining Mrs 
Hardman's brother MH Potter and wife of Conemaugh PA. 

HARTSOCK 06 Mar 1906 Miss Nellie Hartsock, aged 15 years, 2 months, and 16 days, 
daughter of William K Hartsock of Keyser, died Sunday (4 Mar) evening at the 
home of her aunt and uncle Mr & Mrs Francis Piper Diehl at Centenary, 6 miles 
out on the Bedford Road. Her funeral is Tuesday at the Zion Church. This leaves 
Mr Hartsock with only 1 daughter, his wife having died on May 8 last, and 
another child a few years ago. Blanche, the only child left is 13 years old. Mrs 
Hartsock was a daughter of Captain Robinette who lives near this city. 

HENDRICKSON 17 Feb 1906 Mr Perry Hendrickson died yesterday at the home of a 
brother George Hendrickson on Flintstone Creek, aged 84 years. He was also the 
brother of JS Hendrickson of Cumberland. The funeral at Union Grove near Dickens 
MD. 

HENDRICKSON 07 Feb 1906 FC Hendrickson received a telegram this morning stating 
that his brother Orion P Hendrickson, who has been an engineer on the Cumberland 
Valley railroad for many years with headquarters in Hagerstown, was killed in a 
wreck last night. No details were given. He was a widower leaving several 
children and the following brothers and sisters; FC and Summerfield Hendrickson 
of Cumberland; MC Hendrickson of Dickens MD; Mrs Victoria Willison and Mrs 
Caroline Eyler of Hazen MD. He was the son of Oliver P Hendrickson of Hazen MD. 
He had been a railroader for 30 years. The funeral will be in Hagerstown. Also, 
08 Feb 1906 from Hagerstown Mail- RR Accident at Raven WV- Mr hendrickson 
belonged to the brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He was 47 years of age. His 
wife died about 3 years ago. He is survived by the following children: Otis; Guy 
H; Howard J; and Edith; all of Hagerstown; and Mrs Grace Burke of Arkansas; and 
Arthur J Hendrickson of Baltimore. 

HINKLE 10 Feb 1906 Miss Estelle Hinkle, 8 year old daughter of Mrs Emma Hinkle, 
died at 3:00 yesterday afternoon at the residence of her grandparents, Mr & Mrs 
Peter Rice of Mt Pleasant, five miles east of the city, of brain fever. Funeral 
tomorrow at Mt Pleasant with Rev. Mr Gaither of Flintstone officiating. 

HINKLE 24 Jan 1906 The funeral of Mrs Catherine Hinkle took place today, her 
death having occurred suddenly on Monday (22 Jan) at the residence of her 
mother, Mrs Harriet Hinkle of Mt Harmon. Her death was from acute indigestion. 
She suddenly became ill and returned to her room. When her mother called her for 
supper, she found her daughter was dying. Miss Hinkle was a sister to Mr 
Clarence Hinkle of Cumberland. She was to have been married this spring. Also, 
26 Jan 1906 Coroner Humbird issued a death certificate certifying that the young 
woman died from carbolic acid poison. She had died Monday and acute indigestion 
was stated as the cause. Dr WF Twigg had been summoned after she was found dying 
and arrived there to find the spark of life extinct. He made investigation and 
found traces of carbolic acid. Her mouth was slightly burned and from one 
nostril, the deadly poison had flowed and burned her cheek. It is not now known 
how the poison was secured and further investigation continues. 

JOHNSON 11 Jun 1906 Jeremiah Johnson died this morning at Twiggtown, aged 77 
years of dropsy of the heart. He is survived by 4 daughters and 1 son. The 
funeral is tomorrow at 1:00 at the Lutheran Church in Rush. 

JOHNSON 17 Jan 1906 Mrs Mariah Johnson, wife of Jeremiah Johnson, died Tuesday 
(16 Jan) evening at 7:00 at her home in Twiggtown, aged 76 years. The funeral 
takes place tomorrow at the ME Church. She leaves a husband, one son, Griffith 
and 4 daughters; Mrs Charles Twigg of Twiggtown; Mrs William Smith of Plains VA; 
Misses Ella and Naomi at home. She was a member of the Lutheran Church all her 
life. 

KEECH 08 May 1906 Mrs Ellen Keech, wife of Mr Edward J Keech, died at her home, 
181 Virginia Ave, last evening at 7:40 o'clock, aged 45 years. She was the 
daughter of Mr & Mrs Edward Cooney of 32 Thomas St and leaves 6 little children, 
5 boys and 1 girl. Also, 2 brothers John Cooney of Newburg WV and William Cooney 
of Cumberland; and 2 sisters, Misses Margaret and Sarah Cooney of Cumberland. 
The funeral is Thursday at St Mary's Catholic Church with interment in St 
Patricks. 

KREITZBURG 19 Oct 1906 Miss Mary McGraw and Mr George Kreitzburg were married 
yesterday morning at 8:00 by Father Stephen J Clark at St Michael's Church in 
Frostburg. They were attended by Miss Annie McGraw, sister of the bride and by 
Mr Thomas Kreitzburg, a brother of the groom. After the nuptial, they were 
driven to the home of the bride for a breakfast where a large number of friends 
greeted them. They received a great number of handsome and useful gifts. The 
bride is a daughter of Mr & Mrs John McGraw and one of the cities most popular 
young ladies. Mr Kreitzburg is a son of Mr & Mrs George Kreitzburg of Grant 
Street and a most popular young man. After a short honeymoon in the east, they 
will take up residence in Frostburg where the groom is employed. 

KREITZBURG 21 May 1906 Frostburg- Miss Elizabeth Kreitzburg, a daughter of Mr & 
Mrs George C Kreitzburg, died at the residence of her parents on Grant St, this 
city at 11:00 o'clock on Saturday (19 May), aged 26 years. Miss kreitzburg had 
been ill for several weeks and her death is deeply regretted by a large circle 
of friends and relatives. She is survived by her parents, 3 brothers and 2 
sisters, all of this place. The funeral took place today at 9:00 at St Michaels 
Catholic Church with a requiem mass by Father Noland who spoke very freely of 
the true Christian character of the deceased. Interment was made in the church 
cemetery and the remains were followed to the grave by a large crowd of mourning 
friends. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. 

KREITZBURG 04 Sep 1906 Mr Joseph Kreitzburg, a fireman on "Old Maude", the 
monster engine helper on the Connellsville Division of the B&O, was instantly 
killed last Friday (Aug 31) just west of Sand Patch PA tunnel. Mr Kreitzburg had 
just stepped down from his engine to throw a switch, when No. 9, the early 
westbound express, struck him and instantly killed him. He was about 30 years 
old and leaves a wife with whom he resided about a mile from Myersdale PA. He 
was very well known by railroad men in South Cumberland and all sympathize with 
his bereaved wife. 

LEASURE 19 Apr 1906 Miss Lurana Leasure died this morning at her home in Hazen, 
aged 82 years, 6 months, and 15 days. Her funeral will take place on Saturday at 
Elliott's Memorial Church with interment in the Bald Hill Cemetery. Rev. Walter 
Anderson will preach the funeral. The deceased leaves 1 brother, John H Leasure, 
a merchant at Hazen; and 2 sisters, Mrs Lucinda Turner of Boynton PA and Miss 
Mary J Leasure of Hazen (mute). 

McELFISH 14 Jun 1906 Miss Anna McElfish, aged 72 years, died Tuesday (12 Jun) at 
Springfield of paralysis. She was a sister of Amos McElfish, a large land owner 
of the area. 

MILLER 04 Aug 1906 A few days ago, Mr Emanuel Miller, a carpenter who is 
building a barn for William A Brant at the pike on Martin's Mountain, walked out 
to the woods near the home and discovered wild bees in a hollow tree. They cut 
the tree and secured 150 pounds of excellent wild honey. 

NYCUM 25 Sep 1906 Mrs Rebecca Nycum, aged 82 years, mother of Simon Nycum of 
Hanover St, this city, died a few days ago at the home of her only daughter, Mrs 
BF Ward at Pine Ridge, Bedford County. She was the wife of George Nycum. 

O'NEAL 26 Nov 1906 Thomas O'Neal, aged 73 years, was found dead in his bed at 
home in Williamsport yesterday morning. 

OLIVER 01 Jan 1906 Patterson Oliver, the oldest male in Cumberland Valley, has 
died at his son's residence, 3 miles East of Centreville, aged 94 years, 1 
month, and 14 days. He is survived by 4 sons and 3 daughters; Mrs Annie 
Hardinger of Missoula MT; Benjamin Oliver of Burnt Cabins in Fulton County PA; 
Owen Oliver of Hyndman; and Mrs Daniel Mock; Mrs Claude Donahoe, FM Oliver and 
HH Oliver of Cumberland Valley. 

OSTER 08 Sep 1906 Mr Fred C Oster of Columbus Ohio, a son of Mr & Mrs Calvin 
Oster of Cumberland Valley and Miss Lettie Boor, a daughter of Mr & Mrs Oliver P 
Boor of the Cumberland Valley married on 04 Sep at Trinity Lutheran Church 
parsonage, Rev. ML Culler presiding. Mr Oster is a Orderly Sergeant at Columbus 
Barracks. 

PERRIN 06 Aug 1906 Mr Murray Perrin, aged 58 years, a farmer near Flintstone, 
died Sunday evening (5 Aug) of paralysis. He leaves a widow and 5 children, 
namely: William, Nora, Nettie, Carrie, and Henry Perrin. His widow's name was 
Hartsock, a daughter of Isaiah Hartsock. Also surviving are 3 brothers; Jarius 
Perrin on the pike near Flintstone; Henry F Perrin of South Cumberland; and 
Dennis A Perrin of Glenn Street. The funeral is tomorrow at the Fairview MP 
Church with burial in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.  


RICE 12 Feb 1906 Mr Norman Elliott Rice and Miss Annie Magdalene Smith were 
married Thursday (Feb 8) at the parsonage of Zion Reformed Church, 32 Chestnut 
St by Rev C Schmidt, pastor. The bride is the daughter of Mr & Mrs John Smith of 
Columbia St and the groom is a son of Mr & Mrs Eli Rice of near Westernport MD 
Mr Rice holds a fine position at the Allegany County Asylum. 

RICHARDSON 20 Feb 1906 Lonaconing- Mr Thomas Richardson, who was crushed in a 
mine accident in Jackson Mine several months ago, died yesterday morning. He 
would have been age 49 the next July 27. He leaves a widow and six children, 
several grown. 

ROLAND 24 Feb 1906 Mrs Zella Roland, wife of Mr Jno. Roland, a farmer near 
Flintstone, died yesterday age about 37 years. She is survived by her husband 
and 6 little children. Death was due to lung trouble. The funeral is tomorrow 
with burial in the IOOF cemetery. 

SHERTZER 02 Nov 1906 Mrs Barbara Shertzer, aged 76 years, died last night at the 
home of a daughter, Mrs AH Shinholtz of Piedmont Avenue, Cumberland, after a 
long illness. She is survived by the following children: Mrs Katherine 
Shinholtz, Messers, Andrew, Michael, and John Shertzer. The funeral will be on 
Sunday at the German Lutheran Church. 

SMITH 08 Aug 1906 Eli Hite, son of William B Hite of the Cumberland Valley and 
Miss Ida Smith, daughter of Charles Smith of near Flintstone were married at the 
home of the bride, Rev AH Green, pastor of Bedford MP Circuit presided. 

STALLINGS 18 Sep 1906 Licenced to wed are Mr Samuel T Stallings, Spring Gap, a 
farmer, 77 years of age and Mrs Mary Marie Athey, Cumberland, a member of the 
Salvation Army Corps. 

STECKMAN 01 Feb 1906 George Steckman, the father of Johnson Steckman, the 
blacksmith on harrison St, died Monday (29Jan) at his home in Clearville, 
Bedford County, PA at the advanced age of 84 years and 1 month. His funeral took 
place Wednesday in Clearville. He leaves six sons; Lawrence, Johnson, Oliver, 
Jefferson, George, and Lewis Steckman; and one daughter, Mrs Jane Cornell, the 
wife of Daniel Cornell. 

STEWARD 18 Jun 1906 Mrs Rebecca Steward, age about 75 years, died Sunday (17 
Jun) night at Pratt on the pike below Flintstone. She leaves her husband John 
Steward Sr and 3 children; John and Frank Steward and Mrs Julia Dean, the wife 
of Frank Dean of Mt Savage; and also, 2 brothers, William Fletcher of Pratt and 
Daniel Fletcher who works in the lumber woods up the West Virginia Central road; 
and also 2 sisters, Mrs Sara Wilson of Rush and Mrs Elizabeth Weimer of 
Chapman's Run PA. Mrs Steward was a daughter of the late Daniel Fletcher Sr of 
Clear Ridge PA. Funeral services are tomorrow with interment in the family 
burying grounds. 

THRASHER 23 Aug 1906 Mr Edward Thrasher of Seymour St and Miss Maggie L Colbert 
of this city were married at the home of the bride on Oak St on Sunday evening 
(19 Aug) by Rev GTD Collins of the ME Church South. 

TRUE 30 Jan 1906 Martin True of Fulton County PA, died at the home of a daughter 
Mrs Samuel C Hendershot at Bucks Valley PA, aged 74 years. Mr True came to Buck 
Valley in 1861 to avoid the conscription into the Confederate Army and resided 
there until a few years ago when he and his wife removed to Cumberland where 
their sons are employed with the B&O railroad. But he still loved Buck Valley 
and enjoyed visits to friends and relatives and frequently expressed the desire 
to be buried in the ME Cemetery of the church where he was a member for years 
and a trustee. 

TWIGG 30 Mar 1906 Greensberry Twigg died yesterday morning at the Alms house, 
aged 70 years. Funeral services will be held at the Stein Chapel after which the 
body will be taken to Twiggtown for interment. 

TWIGG 17 Nov 1906 Mrs Twigg, wife of Mr Jarius Twigg of Town Creek, died 
yesterday morning at her home from the effects of consumption. Besides her 
husband, she is survived by 4 children. The funeral took place today from the 
house, interment being made in the family cemetery. 

WHETSTONE 31 Jan 1906 Edward H Whetstone died at his home ½ mile south of 
Wolfsburg PA on Friday (26 Jan) at 8:15 in the evening, aged 42 years. He was 
born in Colerain Township near Koontzville, a son of Levi and Margaret 
Whetstone. In June 1887 he was married to Jennie Diehl, a daughter of SS Diehl 
of Bedford Township. He is survived by his mother Margaret Whetstone of 
Koontzville and his wife and the following children, all at home: Ward, Oscar, 
Rose, Cora, and Raymond. Two sisters, Mrs John Irvine Diehl of Koontzville and 
Mrs Sol Diehl of Cumberland. 

WILLISON 12 Feb 1906 Frostburg- Today was the funeral of Miss Missouri Willison, 
the youngest child of Mr Andrew J Willison of Bowery St who died suddenly on 
Saturday (10 Jan), age 30 years. Her mother died when she was 2 weeks old. 
Burial in Allegany Cemetery. 

ZEMBOWER 28 Feb 1906 Mrs Louise Zembower, aged 68 years, died at her home in 
Cumberland Valley last night. She is the widow of JM Zembower and is survived by 
2 children; Mrs CH Boor and ET Zembower.
