Leonard J. Seifts 
Fire fighter
  Leonard J. Seifts died Aug. 16 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
  He was born July 18, 1924, to John Louis Seifts and Elizabeth McCrea Seifts, 
and was a longtime resident of Port Washington, N.Y., and Chester, Vt.
  Mr. Seifts served in World War II with Gen. George Patton in the 3rd Army in 
Normandy Beach, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and Czechoslovakia and 
helped build the Palace of Justice. He was also a 50-year member of the Port 
Washington Fire Department.
  Mr. Seifts attended St. Peter's School in Port Washington, and was a member of 
St. Peter's Church in Port Washington and St. Joseph's Church in Chester.
  He is survived by his wife, Margaret Brennan Seifts; three daughters, Margaret 
Seifts Bodre of Seattle Wash., Mary Seifts Ritucci of Park City, Utah, and 
Maureen Seifts Elting of North Bethesda; and five grandchildren.

Priscilla Mary Bowman Auvil 
Produce stand worker
  Priscilla Mary Bowman Auvil, 91, of Redland, died Aug. 25 at Casey House in 
Derwood.
  Born July 16, 1909, in Colebank, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late 
Benjamin and Eva Runner Bowman.
  She was the wife of the late Roscoe "Reds" Auvil, who died in 1998.
  Mrs. Auvil was of the Protestant faith. She loved birds and wildlife. She has 
retired from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda after 30 years of 
service, where she had worked as a lab technician and animal caretaker.
  After retirement she helped her husband at their produce stand in Redland, 
which they operated for many years.
  Mrs. Auvil is survived by four children, JoAnne Morris and husband W.T. of 
Rockville, Jimmie Ray Auvil of Redland, Laura L. Barnes of West Virginia, and 
Frances M. Stevens and husband Earl of Gaithersburg; and five grandchildren and 
four great-grandchildren.
  Funeral services were held Aug. 29 at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home in 
Laytonsville. Interment was at Parklawn Cemetery in Rockville.

Eleanor Eugenia White 
Administrative secretary
  Eleanor Eugenia White, 86, of Virginia Beach, Va., and formerly of Olney, died 
Aug. 18 at Virginia Beach Rehabilitation and Health Center.
  Born March 24, 1914, in Darnestown, she was a daughter of the late James 
Wilson and Ethel Woolley White.
  Until retirement, Miss White had worked as an administrative secretary for 
GMAC.
  She was a member of Lynnhaven Colony Congregational Church in Virginia Beach 
and was a former member of Darnestown Presbyterian Church.
  She is survived by her brother, James B. White of Virginia Beach and 
Clarksburg; two nieces, Eleanor W. Hawse and Mary Anne White; and two nephews, 
James W. White of Ocean City and Edward B. White of Summerville, S.C.
  Funeral services were held Aug. 23 at Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home in 
Damascus. Interment was in Darnestown Presbyterian Cemetery.

May Blaskiewicz Lankowski

  May Blaskiewicz Lankowski, 60, of Olney died July 21 while vacationing in 
Washington State.
  She was born in Scranton, Pa., May 1, 1940, the daughter of the late Anthony 
and Rose Sawicki Blackiewicz.
  Mrs. Lankowski attended Technical High School in Scranton and the University 
of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. She was a homemaker.
  She is survived by her husband, Frank Lankowski; a son, Jerry Blake of Silver 
Spring; two daughters, Patricia Plunk of Oak Harbor, Wash., and Christine Benson 
of Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren; a brother, Anthony Blackiewicz of Avoca, 
Pa.; and two sisters, Romayne Brace and Shirley Kepic, both of Sarasota, Fla.
  She was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Dobrydney, and a brother, Richard 
Turner.
  A Mass was held Aug. 5 at Holy Rosary Church in Duryea, Pa.

Joseph Roland Gamble Jr. 
Firefighter
  Joseph Roland Gamble Jr., 58, of Germantown, died Sept. 1 at the Anne Arundel 
Medical Center in Annapolis, after suffering a heart attack onboard his boat.
  He served 24 years as a firefighter for the District of Columbia and was also 
retired as a bus driver for Montgomery County Public Schools. He was a member of 
the Emerald Society.
  Mr. Gamble was born in Maryland, the son of the late Joseph Roland Gamble Sr. 
and Bessie Pierce Gamble.
  Surviving are three daughters: Joanne L. Gamble of Hagerstown, Suzanne 
Christine Bennett of Frederick and Kathleen Kirkpatrick, and three 
grandchildren. Also surviving is a long-time companion, Arlene Waters of 
Germantown.
  Services were held Tuesday at the Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus. 
Interment was private.

Mary Louise Haines

  Mary Louise "Billie" Haines, 75, of Lehigh Acres, Fla., formerly of Silver 
Spring, died Aug. 28 at the home of her daughter in Olney.
  Born in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late John and Lois Gullette 
Reese.
  She was the wife of the late George Louis Haines Jr., who predeceased her in 
February.
  Mrs. Haines was a graduate of Westminster High School and Western Maryland 
College in Westminster. She had worked as a substitute teacher in Montgomery 
County and as a salesperson for Woodward and Lothrop department store for many 
years. She had also worked as a salesperson at Antique Row in Kensington. Mrs. 
Haines had worked at the election polls in Montgomery County as well as in 
Lehigh Acres.
  She was a charter member of Glenmont United Methodist Church in Glenmont. More 
recently, she attended Christ United Methodist Church in Lehigh Acres and sang 
in their choir. 
  She loved to entertain and was an avid bridge player. She was also a 
Washington Redskins fan.
  Mrs. Haines is survived by children, Reese Haines of Derwood, Sharrie Ross of 
Brookeville and Bobbee Kolb of Olney; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth 
Hotes of Florida. 
  Visitation was at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home in Laytonsville. Services were 
held at the funeral home Aug. 31. Interment was at Westminster Cemetery in 
Westminster.
  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Donald Kessinger 
Engineer
  Donald Kessinger, 41, a registered professional engineer with Jackson & Tull 
and formerly Bechtel Power, died Aug. 27 in Silver Spring. 
  Born in Montgomery County, he was the son of Jean Kessinger of Frederick and 
the late Jack Kessinger.
  Mr. Kessinger was a graduate of Springbrook High School and the University of 
Maryland School of Engineering. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for 
more than 30 years. He was a member of Troop 144 of the Olde Mill District where 
he served as a Scout, assistant Scoutmaster, camping coordinator, high adventure 
adviser for both the troop and district, the Eagle Scout adviser and the adult 
adviser for the Olde Mill chapter of the Order of the Arrow. He was the 
recipient of the District Award of Merit, District Scouter of the Year and Vigil 
Order of the Arrow. He loved working with Scouts of all ages. 
  Besides his mother, he is survived by a brother, John Kessinger of Richmond; 
sisters, Sharon Walton of Damascus, Marilyn Kessinger of Burtonsville, Sally 
Phifer of Richmond and Kristine Schroeder of Frederick; and nieces and nephews, 
Johnny, Keith, Lauren, Robin, Nicole, Kelly, Noah, Jimmie, Zach and Tyler, and 
cousin, Mary Jane Burt.

Robert W. Lebling 
Real estate broker
  Robert W. Lebling, 79, a real estate broker and civic leader in Montgomery 
County, died Aug. 2 at Sibley Memorial Hospital after a prolonged illness. He 
lived in Gaithersburg.
  Mr. Lebling was owner and president of the Bogley Inc. real estate firm and 
served two consecutive terms as president of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Chamber of 
Commerce in the 1960s.
  As chamber president, he spearheaded the Bethesda Beautification Project, 
which included building the Woodmont Triangle Park and planting hundreds of 
trees along the median strip of Wisconsin Avenue, with the active support of 
LadyBird Johnson.
  Mr. Lebling also served on the boards of Metropolitan Federal Savings and Loan 
and the Bank of Bethesda.
  Mr. Lebling was born Nov. 19, 1923, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to the late William L. 
Lebling and Isabel Horan. He spent his boyhood years in Colorado but later moved 
to Montgomery County and graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.
  Mr. Lebling attended Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., but World War II 
interrupted his college years. He became a captain and a B-26 bomber pilot in 
the U.S. Army Air Corps and flew 50 missions in the European Theater.
  On May 29, 1946, he married Rita T. Walsh of Chevy Chase.
  After the war, he attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., 
and went into real estate, working for his father, William L. Lebling. He moved 
eventually to a real estate firm owned by Samuel E. Bogley and eventually bought 
the company.
  At its peak, Mr. Lebling's firm had four offices in Montgomery County. It was 
acquired in the 1980s by Mount Vernon Realty. Mr. Lebling was also a commercial 
developer and builder and did extensive appraisal work in Montgomery County. 
  Over the years, Mr. Lebling and his family lived in Bethesda, Potomac, 
Germantown and Gaithersburg. 
  Mr. Lebling was buried Aug. 5 at Saint Gabriel's Catholic Cemetery in services 
officiated by The Rev. Henry O'Meara and Pastor Jan Lookingbill.

  Daniel Reynolds Page, 18, a former Rockville resident, died Aug. 29 in 
Atlanta, Ga.
  He is survived by his mother April Measell Cline and stepfather Steven Cline

Dunwoody, Ga.; brothers Todd Page of Syracuse, N.Y. and Matthew Cline of

John J. Parise Sr 
Investment executive
  John J. Parise Sr., 78, of Montgomery Village, died Aug. 28 at Casey House 
Hospice in Rockville. 
  Born in Belle Vernon, Pa., he was a senior vice president for investments at 
the Morgan Stanley Dean Witter office in Gaithersburg and a former library 
director at the Pentagon.
  Mr. Parise served in the Army in Italy and North Africa during World War II 
and was awarded three Bronze Stars. After the war, he moved to the Washington 
area and went to work for the Army as a civilian. He joined Morgan Stanley after 
he retired in 1972.
  His first wife, Alvina Parise, died in 1960. His marriage to Dorothy Parise 
ended in divorce.
  Survivors include his wife, Carol, of Montgomery Village, and 11 children, 
Ronald of Ft. Myers, Fla., Donald of New Windsor, Md., Patricia of Baltimore, 
Michael of Germantown, John Jr. of Montgomery Village, Anne of Centreville, Va., 
James of Poolesville, Jane of Montgomery Village, Elizabeth of Germantown, David 
of Montgomery Village and Jennifer of Chicago, Ill. He is also survived by a 
brother, James F. Parise of Silver Spring, and a sister, Evelyn Manown of Belle 
Vernon, as well as 13 grandchildren.
  Services were held Sept. 2 at St. Martin's Church with burial at Gate of 
Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring.

  Arlene Rose DeNio Winneberger, 63, a longtime resident of Rockville, died Aug. 
30 in North Carolina.
  She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Ronald Winneberger; three 
children, Rhonda Spriggs, Lori Hynes and her husband Joe, and Russell 
Winneberger and his wife Robyn; three grandchildren; and three siblings, Joan 
Kyro and her husband Richard, Marvin DeNio, and Paul DeNio and his wife Wanda; 
her brother-in-law, Drew Winneberger and his wife Catherine; her mother-in-law, 
Irma Winneberger; and several nieces and nephews. 
  Services were held Saturday at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel in 
Zebulon, N.C.

Roderick Howard Cox 
Environmentalist
  Roderick Howard Cox, 89, of Bethesda died Aug. 25 at National Naval Medical 
Center shortly after suffering a heart attack.
  Mr. Cox was born to British parents living in New York City. He moved with his 
family to Birmingham, Mich., after his father became an American citizen and 
affiliated with the automobile industry in Detroit.
  Mr. Cox was a 1933 graduate of the University of Michigan, where he was a 
member of the national championship football team of 1932. Mr. Cox was the 
national collegiate hammer-throwing champion of 1933.
  He earned his master's in teaching from Harvard University in 1941, and was a 
returning student in the Harvard graduate school in 1968-1969.
  For a short time before going to Harvard, Mr. Cox was a reporter for the Daily 
Press in Pontiac, Mich., and later taught at the Cranbrook Boy's School, a 
private secondary school in Bloomfield, Mich. 
  After receiving his master's, he taught in a public school at Long Branch, 
N.J., until he joined the U.S. Navy shortly after Pearl Harbor.
  During World War II, Mr. Cox was stationed in Washington, D.C., where he was a 
communications officer. He stayed in the Naval Reserve after active duty and 
became a commander.
  After the war, Mr. Cox became head of the history department at Sidwell 
Friends School and re-joined the staff of Keewaydin Camp on Lake Temangami in 
Ontario, Canada. All together, Mr. Cox amassed more than 60 summers at 
Keewaydin, and became an expert canoeist.
  An active environmentalist, Mr. Cox was a lover of the outdoors, and a member 
of the Men's Garden Club of Montgomery County. He was also a member of St. 
John's Episcopal Church, Lafayette Square. In his younger days, he was active in 
its Men's Club, president of the Men's Council and president of the Young Adult 
Club.
  He also served on the board of St. John's Child Development Center. He was a 
lover of dancing. He belonged to the Candlelight Waltzes as well as the Tuesday 
Evening Square Dance Group.
  He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Burnet Cox of Bethesda, as well 
as three nephews and one niece, all living in the West.

Jitendra V. Dave 
Researcher
  Jitendra V. Dave,74, of Silver Spring, died Sept. 1 at Montgomery General 
Hospital in Olney.
  Born May 4, 1926, in India, he was the son of the late Vishvanath and Moti 
Dave. He was the husband of the late Kunjbala J. Dave.
  Mr. Dave has received his doctorate in physics and retired as a research 
computer person from the IBM. He was a member of the Oakdale Emory United 
Methodist Church in Olney.
  He is survived by a daughter, Sheela J. Huff and husband, Mark, of Olney; 
grandchidren, Aianna Huff and Nicholas Huff both of Olney; and sister, Mangala 
Dave of California.
  A memorial service was held Sept. 8 at Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church. 
Arrangements were by the Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home in Laytonsville.

Jacob Louis Gable

  Jacob Louis Gable, 89, of Montgomery Village, died Aug. 31 at Montgomery 
Hospice's Casey House in Rockville.
  Born in Mountville, Pa., he lived with his wife, Ruth Anna Deen Gable, in the 
Maryland area for 59 years.
  Besides his wife, he is also survived by three daughters, Susan Connors of 
Olney, Linda wills of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Diane Gable Charuhas of 
Montgomery Village; one son, Jacob Louis Gable Jr. of Pittsburgh. and seven 
grandchildren.
  An engineer, he attended Mercersburg Academy and Rensselaer Polytechnic 
Institute.
  In 1980, he retired from the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, where 
he was Director of Public Works.
  Graveside services were held Sept. 2 at the Norbeck Memorial Park in Olney.

  Mary Matosian, 95, of Gaithersburg, formerly of Washington, D.C., died Sept. 
8, at Shady Grove Nursing Center in Rockville. 
  Born in Turkey, she was the wife of the late George Matosian, who died in 
1988.
  She is survived by two children, Alexander Matosian of Wheaton and Rose M. 
Werner of Derwood. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great-
grandchildren.
  Mrs. Matosian and her husband owned and operated People's Delicatessen in 
Northeast Washington, D.C. for many years. She was of the Catholic faith. Her 
hobbies were crocheting, sewing and her flower garden.
  A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Tuesday at St. Francis of Assisi 
Catholic Church, Derwood. Interment was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver 
Spring.

  Linda Martin Benson, 59, of Gaithersburg died Sept. 16, at Shady Grove 
Adventist Hospital, Rockville. She was the wife of Robert L. Benson II. 
  She worked as a title supervisor at the Department of Motor Vehicles. She was 
also a registered nurse and had formerly worked at Chestnut Lodge in Rockville.
  She was an active member of the Pythian Sisters in Gaithersburg.
  Born in Morgantown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Meredith A. Martin 
and Wenonah A. Harrison Martin.
  Surviving besides her husband are daughters Rosalyn Marie Benson of 
Gaithersburg and Roxanne Benson Beatty and her husband Charles H. M. Beatty of 
Germantown; a granddaughter, Kathleen Lea Beatty of Germantown; sister and 
brother-in-law, Maryellyn and Theodore H. Holmes of Baltimore; brother-in-law 
John D. Benson of Gaithersburg; and two nieces.
  Services were held Tuesday at Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus, 
conducted by the Pythian Sisters. Interment followed at Oak Grove Cemetery, 
Terra Alta, W.Va.

  Helen Laverne Fawley, 81, of Potomac, died Sept. 12 at the Citizens Nursing 
Home in Frederick. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Fawley.
  Born Jan. 4, 1919 in Triadelphia, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John 
and Helen Tichoufski Pavlina.
  Mrs. Fawley was retired from Montgomery County Public Schools, where she 
worked as a cafeteria worker for 37 years.
  She is survived by a son, Larry Fawley and wife Sheri of Mt. Airy; a daughter, 
Terry L. Fawley of Ijamsville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a 
sister, Delores Williams; a brother, Johnny Pavlina.
  Mrs. Fawley was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Fawley.
  Services and interment were private.

  Maurice Hinshaw, 80, of Gaithersburg, died Sept. 7 at Shady Grove Hospital in 
Rockville.
  Born in Illinois, he was the son of the late Don A. Hinshaw and Esther Johnson 
Hinshaw. He was the husband of the late Martha L. Hinshaw.
  Mr. Hinshaw had worked as a printer for the Government Printing Office.
  He is survived by a daughter, Lila Stanley of Illinois. He is also survived by 
nieces and nephews.
  Funeral services were held at the Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville. 
Interment was in Norbeck Memorial Park Cemetery, Olney.

Gloria Janet Lowery

  Gloria Janet Lowery, 57, of Frederick and formerly of Seneca, died Sept. 11 at 
Frederick Memorial Hospital.
  Born in Seneca, she was the daughter of Myrtle Virginia Grimes Lowery of 
Frederick and the late Francis Leon Lowery Sr.
  Until her retirement, Ms. Lowery was employed as a machinist with RACAL 
Communications in Gaithersburg. 
  Surviving besides her mother are four sisters, Bettie Lowery of Collingswood, 
N. J., Jane Wonders of Dillsburg, Pa., Connie Lowery of Woodstock, Va., and 
Roxanne Lowery of Miami, Fla.; and one brother, Francis Lowery Jr. of 
Littlestown, Pa.
  Funeral services and interment were private.

Eleanor W. Offutt 
National Institutes of Mental Health employee
  Eleanor Watkins Offutt, 78, of Cedar Grove died Sept. 12, at Shady Grove 
Adventist Hospital, Rockville. 
  Mrs. Offutt retired from the National Institutes of Mental Health, Grants 
Management Office, in 1978, where she rose from a secretary to the chief of the 
section.
  She was a member of Upper Seneca Baptist Church in Cedar Grove and the wife of 
the late Russell E. Offutt. 
  Born on the Watkins family farm in Cedar Grove, she was the daughter of the 
late Charles Lee Watkins Jr. and Rosie Johnson Watkins.
  She graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1940 and attended Strayer 
Business College in Washington, D.C.
  Surviving are one sister, Rosemary Burdette and husband Orin of Harbeson, 
Del.; one niece, Margo King Karbacher of Aqua Dulce, Calif.; and a special 
great-nephew, Dustin Linton. Mrs. Offutt was preceded in death by a sister, 
Margaret E. King.
  Services were held Saturday at Olin L. Molesworth Funeral Home, Damascus. The 
Rev. Randy Dick officiated. Interment followed at Upper Seneca Baptist Cemetery, 
Cedar Grove.

  Mr. Joseph A. Riedmuller, 29, of Walkersville, died suddenly Aug. 28, in

  He was the devoted father of Shane Vincent.
  Born in Silver Spring, he was the son of George Riedmuller of Sandy Lake, Pa., 
and Marcia Fallon of Maybrook, Va.
  He attended Magruder High School and Gaithersburg High School. 
  He was employed by Valley Excavation Co. in Frederick.
  In addition to his son, he is survived by 12 brothers and sisters, Diane, 
Michael, Brian, Kevin, Kathleen, Brendan, Susan, Steven, Laura, Jennifer, Monica 
and Daniel.

  Alfred R. Triano Sr. died Sept. 14. Mr. Triano was formerly of Oradell, N.J.,

  Son of the late Giuseppi Rocco Triano and Maria Savena Mucucci, he was the 
husband of the late Catherine Kelly Triano. 
  He is survived by four children, Joseph Francis Triano, Alfred Robert Triano 
Jr., Michael Anthony Triano and Aileen Marie Triano. He is survived by two 
sisters, Grace Teravainen and Dotty Milazzo. He is also survived by 11 
grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Casey House in Rockville. 
  Born in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Anna Josephine Loss, 
and the wife of John Buric.
  Mrs. Buric attended Kingwood High School in Kingwood, W.Va. She was a member 
of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Howesville, W.Va. 
  Besides her husband, she is survived by five children, John David Buric and 
Thomas J. Buric of Gaithersburg, Diane Marie Buric and Julie Ann Buric of Silver 
Spring, and Nicholas Lee Buric of Ellicott City. She is also survived by three 
sisters, Paula Choquette of California, Ginger Shaw of Virginia and Betty Ann 
Kolwey of Hollywood, Md.; and seven grandchildren.
  The Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville, handled the arrangements.

  Violet J. Harding, 86, of Gaithersburg, died Sept. 20 at Shady Grove Adventist 
Hospital.
  She was the wife of the late John Edward Harding Sr. and the daughter of the 
late Maude Schwartzbeck Souders and Robert Souders.
  Mrs. Harding was retired from the Montgomery County Board of Education.
  She was a Catholic and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
  She is survived by eight children, Jean Graham and husband Charles of 
Rockville, Priscilla Hansen and husband Ronald of Gaithersburg, Kenneth Harding 
and wife Carole of Rockville, Carvel Harding and wife Janet of Jefferson, Upton 
Harding and wife Constance of Gaithersburg, Janet Burdette and husband John of 
Monrovia, Jacqueline Harding of Gaithersburg and Julia Gabor of Frederick; one 
daughter-in-law, Marguerite Harding of Bowie; one sister, Helen Beck of 
Rockville; and 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
  She was predeceased by one daughter, Lita Joan Harding; two sons, John Edward 
Harding Jr. and Robert L. Harding; and six brothers.
  Viewing was held at the Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home in Rockville.
  A mass of Christian burial was held Sept. 25 at St. Martin's of Tours Catholic 
Church in Gaithersburg. Interment followed in Forest Oak Cemetery in 
Gaithersburg.

Frances B. Heisterman 
Retired accountant
  Frances Broy Heisterman, 96, of Damascus, died Sept. 25 at Shady Grove Nursing 
and Rehabilitation Center in Rockville.
  She was the wife of the late William H. Heisterman Sr., who died in 1972.
  Mrs. Heisterman was most recently an accountant for several small building 
contractors until she retired in 1969 at the age of 65. 
  She did research at Johns Hopkins Hospital until 1937, and then became 
director of personnel for a major department store chain. As World War II 
approached, she changed jobs to become an accountant for several government 
supply companies.
  She was born in Mt. Jackson, Va., the daughter of the late Elijah Newton Broy 
and Henrietta Susan Smith Broy. She won a scholarship to West Virginia 
University in Morgantown, where she majored in psychology and graduated with 
honors in 1922 at age 18.
  Surviving her are her son William H. Heisterman Jr. of Damascus and daughter 
Joy D. Pittman of Glen Burnie, as well as six grandchildren and nine great-
grandchildren.
  Friends may call 10 a.m. until services begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the Olin L. 
Molesworth Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus.
  Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Baltimore.

Paul R. Martin 
Retired U.S. Navy contractor
  Paul R. Martin, 78, of Englewood, Fla., formerly of Rockville, died Sept. 10.
  He was the husband of Betty Martin of Englewood.
  He was born in Palmyra, N.Y. He moved from Rockville to Florida in 1977.
  He had served with the U.S. Army in World War II and received a Bronze Star 
for his efforts during the Battle of the Bulge.
  He was a retired contractor with the U.S. Navy and had been involved in the 
Kensington Lodge of the Masonic Temple, the Lions Club, American Legion, Elk's 
Club, Holiday Ramblers Travelers Club and the National Association of Retired 
Federal Employees.
  He was of the Protestant faith.
  In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Betty Martin of 
Englewood, Joyce Whitten of Gaithersburg, Kathy Powell of Brunswick, Md., and 
Joan Penfold of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sons, Robert Englewood of Libertytown, 
Md., and Mike Englewood of Frederick; two sisters, Fay Martin of Manassa, Va., 
and Ruth Scales of Rouse's Point, N.Y.; one brother, Charles Cookman of Rotonda, 
Fla.; and 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
  He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Donald Lee Shipley 
Volunteer fire fighter
  Donald Lee "Chick" Shipley, 66, of Leesburg, Va., died suddenly Sept. 18 in 
Atlanta, Ga., while on a business trip.
  Mr. Shipley was born in Lewisdale, Md. The son of the late Maurice Alton 
Shipley and Nora Brown Shipley, he was raised in Maryland. He was a life member 
of the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department, serving as deputy fire chief for 
several years, and fire chief from 1970 to 1976. 
  Mr. Shipley and his family moved to Leesburg, Va. in 1976, where he was the 
owner/manager of the Ben Franklin Store in Leesburg for 26 years.
  Mr. Shipley is survived by his wife, Brenda Sharon Shipley; three children, 
Cheri Garvin of Richmond, Va., Carrie Johnson of Sterling, Va., and Donna 
Shipley of Leesburg, Va.; two sisters, Norita "Sissy" Shipley of Gaithersburg 
and Mary Ellen Winters of Silver Spring; four brothers, Alton Shipley of 
Damascus, Carroll Shipley of Damascus, Roby Shipley of Douglas, Wyo., and 
Linwood Shipley of Damascus. 
  He is also survived by two sons-in-law, Danny Garvin and Keith Johnson, and 
one grandson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
  A fire department memorial service was held at the Olin L. Molesworth Funeral 
Home in Damascus. Funeral Services were held at the Leesburg United Methodist 
Church, Leesburg, Va. Interment was at the Union Cemetery in Leesburg.

  Paul E. Strausser, 75, of Germantown died Sept. 24 at Suburban Hospital, 
Bethesda. He was the husband of Josephine V. Strausser. 
  Born in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John and Anna Brocious 
Strausser.
  In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Susanne Davis of 
Boston, Mass., and grandchildren, Cameron Davis, Hannah Davis, Jennifer Siever 
and Bryan Siever. He is also survived by a brother, James Strausser of Mt. 
Shasta, Calif., and a sister, Grace Berger of Pennsylvania.

Ruby G. Watkins

  Mrs. Ruby G. Watkins, 86, died Sept. 22 at the Wilson Health Care Center in 
Gaithersburg. She was formerly of Washington Grove.
  Born Dec. 28, 1913, in Montgomery County, she was a daughter of the late 
George and Elizabeth Carter Brigham. She was the wife of the late Russell C. 
Watkins, who died in 1987 and to whom she had been married for almost 50 years.
  Mrs. Watkins was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville and 
a member of the Washington Grove United Methodist Church in Washington Grove. 
  She is survived by a son, Ronald L. Watkins and his wife, Brenda, of Hamilton, 
Va. She is also survived by a brother, George Brigham of Myersville, Md. Also 
surviving are eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded 
in death by a daughter, Pat Munday; and two sisters, Annie Coleman and Ruth 
Harrison.
  Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, 
Laytonsville. Interment was in Kemptown Cemetery, Kemptown, Md.
