Lively Jr. Computer expert Thomas A. Lively Jr., 40, of Silver Spring, a computer software expert with the Armed Forces Radiobiology Institute and volunteer soccer coach, died May 24 from multiple strokes at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. He was born in Houston, Texas, Aug. 5, 1959. He was the great-great-great- great-grandson of President James Monroe. At the age of 5, Mr. Lively moved to the Washington area. He earned bachelor of science degrees in microbiology and computer science from the University of Maryland where he was a Phi Beta Kappa. He earned a master's degree in computer system management from the University of Maryland and a master's in computer science from Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering. At AFRI, he won the Outstanding Service Medal in September 1994, the highest honor the institute gives to a civilian employee. Outside of work, he enjoyed playing co-rec soccer and coaching indoor soccer for children at the Burtonsville United Soccer Club and the Calverton Recreational first-grade soccer team. Survivors include wife, Robin; children, Clay, Sarah, Brett and Terence of Silver Spring; father, Thomas A Lively Sr. of South Daytona, Fla.; mother, Elizabeth G. Johnson Lively of Waynesboro, Pa.; brother, Christopher Lively of Ozark, Ala; sisters, Carroll Solis of Summerland Key, Fla., Margaret Melcher of Bowie, Anne Aden of Waynesboro, Pa., and Margarette Wills of Rockville; and many friends. A memorial service was held May 27 at Church of the Resurrection in Silver Spring. Collins Funeral Home in Silver Spring handled the arrangements. Jack Karl De Perini Company owner Jack Karl De Perini, 75, of Derwood, died May 23, 2000, at Washington Adventist Hospital in Rockville. He was the former husband of Mildred Louise De Perini of Sebring, Fla. Born in Washington, D.C., May 31, 1924, he was the son of the late Karl De Perini and Belle Victoria Sanford Tate. Mr. De Perini was a World War II veteran, where he received the Purple Heart along with many other commendations. Mr. De Perini was the owner and president of De Perini Metal Fabricators Inc., in Gaithersburg. Surviving are three daughters, Jacquelyn Bingham and her husband, Terry, of Monrovia; Jo Kisner and her husband, Harold, of Middletown; and Karla M. Bynaker and her husband, Roland, of Damascus. Also surviving are one brother Wilbur De Perini and his wife, Hilda, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a cousin, Delores Lohr and her husband, Robert, of Upper Marlboro. He is also survived by five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and his companion, Mildred K. Scaletta of Sebring, Fla., along with many other friends and relatives. The Olin L. "John" Savage, 85, of Mt. Airy, died May 29, 2000, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Doris Larue Savage. Mr. Savage was a retired farmer. Born on March 11, 1915, in Montgomery County, he was the son of the late Harry Randolph and Osie Bertha Poole Savage. Surviving besides his wife, are one daughter, Doris Lee Redmond and her husband, Charles, of Ijamsville; one son, George Michael Savage of Mt. Airy; one granddaughter, Doris Kristen Gillespie and her husband of Ijamsville; two brothers, Charles Savage of Mt. Airy and Marshall Savage of Frederick; three sisters, Florence Burrier, Evelyn Covell and Betty Rhinecker, all of Frederick. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Leroy Savage, Martin Savage, Kenneth Savage and Melvin Savage; and two sisters, Virginia Ruby and Lucy Dove. Napoli Retired firefighter Vincent Benedict Napoli, 77, of Spruce Pine, N.C., died May 28 at a Spruce Pine hospital. He was a son of the late Frank and Josephine Genovese Napoli of Washington, D.C. Mr. Napoli was a longtime resident of Takoma Park before moving to Spruce Pine. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired federal firefighter. In addition his federal service, as a member of the Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department he received the 1957 Fireman of the Year in Maryland award for excellence in fire prevention. Mr. Napoli was also a firefighting instructor for the University of Maryland Extension Service. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Burleson Napoli of Spruce Pine; daughters, Frances Marie Herrell of Gaithersburg and Gwendolyn N. Tracy of Spruce Pine; sisters, Teresa Napoli of Silver Spring and Frances Catherine Napoli of Washington, D.C.; grandson, Kenneth Herrell; and nieces and nephews. Johnny Alan Mitchell Mechanic Ryan Weldon Pestun Student Ronald Walter Smith Doctor Ronald Walter Smith, M.D., 69, obstetrician and gynecologist, died of a heart attack May 23. Born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., he was raised in Tunkhannock, Pa., receiving his first eight years of education in a one-room schoolhouse. He earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland in 1953 and a doctorate of medicine from George Washington School of Medicine in 1957. Dr. Smith joined the U.S. Navy in 1957, interning at the U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Albans, N.Y., from 1957 to 1958. He was the general medical officer at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Annapolis from 1958 to 1959, completed his residency at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Va., from 1959 to 1962, then served at the Naval Hospital in Annapolis from 1962 to 1967, where he was chief of department the last two years of active duty. Dr. Smith remained active in the Naval Reserve, attaining the rank of captain and serving as deputy fleet surgeon. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1991. Dr. Smith received his board certification in obstetrics and gynecology in 1966. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology at Group Health in Washington, D.C., from 1967 to 1970. He entered private practice in Olney in 1970. He was an emeritus staff member of Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, serving as chairman of obstetrics and gynecology from 1977 to 1980, as well as numerous other committees during his years of active practice. He retired from the staff of Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville and Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. He practiced gynecology at Leisure World Medical Center after retiring from private practice in May 1999 until the time of his death. He was a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Montgomery County Medical Society and the Retired Officers Association. He was a member of the George Washington Society, sponsoring a scholarship for medical students. He was also a member of Manor Country Club, where he was active in the men's senior golf program. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Carol Shaffer Smith; two sons, Gregory Smith and Ronald Smith Jr.; a daughter, Alicia Harvey; stepsons and daughters in law, Stephen and Susan Myers and Douglas and Eileen Myers; stepdaughters and sons-in-law Cindy and Jeff Retterer, Linda and Steve Kindred, Robin and Bob Groves and Cass and Tim Schaedig; 10 grandsons and seven granddaughters; and a sister, Jane Aldridge. Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home in Rockville handled the arrangements. Duane C. Brand Duane C. Brand, 75, died of lung cancer May 17 at his home in Silver Spring. He retired in early 1999 after 44 years as owner and operator of Globe Auto Body Inc. in Takoma Park. Mr. Brand, a former longtime Takoma Park resident, was a native of New Hampton, Iowa, who came to Washington soon after serving in the Pacific as a corporal in the Marine Corps during World War II. In addition to running his business, he served on the board of directors of the Washington Metropolitan Auto Body Association, an organization he co-founded in 1965. Mr. Brand was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Keegan Brand, in 1995. Survivors include four children, Duane C. Brand Jr. of Bowie, Jim Brand of Olney, Dean Brand of Silver Spring and Cheryl Brand of Takoma Park; two sisters, Karen McNeil of Hampton, Va., and Muriel Lofquist of Gilbert, Minn.; and three grandchildren. O'Neale, 75, of Silver Spring, died May 9 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born Dec. 18, 1924, in Maryland, he was the son of the late John and Nellie Lethbridge O'Neale. He was the husband of Ruth Derrick O'Neale. Mr. O'Neale was a graduate of Sherwood High School and served in the Army in World War II. He was a member of the Sandy Spring Lions Club and worked for C&P Telephone as a traffic engineer for 43 years. Besides his wife, he is survived by four children, Patsy Russell and husband Wesley of Silver Spring, Dean O'Neale and wife Wanda of Silver Spring, Bonnie Davis and husband Michael of Silver Spring, and Rodney O'Neale and wife Eileen of Silver Spring; and eight grandchildren. Services were held May 11 at Ashton United Methodist Church. Interment was at Parklawn Cemetery in Rockville. Horwitz, 83, a retired refrigeration service engineer who had been instrumental in promoting laws to require the safe disposal of refrigerators and the professional licensure of refrigeration and air-conditioning service engineers, died April 18 at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington in Rockville. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. Mr. Horwitz, who was born in St. Louis and grew up in New Rochelle, N.Y., and New York City, lived in Wheaton for more than 50 years until moving to Leisure World last fall. After moving to Washington, D.C., in the early 1940s, he worked as an appliance serviceman before starting his own business, Real Estate Refrigeration Service, which he operated for more than 40 years. As editor of the magazines of two organizations of refrigeration service engineers, Mr. Horwitz successfully pressed for laws that sought to prevent deaths of children who suffocated after climbing into abandoned refrigerators by requiring that all discarded refrigerators have their doors removed. He argued for separate licensure for refrigeration service engineers similar to that for electricians and plumbers, legislation first adopted by the District of Columbia in the early 1950s before being adopted by other states and local jurisdictions. He also was the author of books and articles for service contractors on providing quality service. Mr. Horwitz's interest in motion pictures led him to develop a prototype pocket movie camera, for which he was granted a U.S. patent. He founded the National Association of Super-8 Filmmakers and, after his retirement, established and led a film discussion group at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington. He and his wife, the former Annette Reisman, were among the original members of Congregation Har Tzeon (now Har Tzeon-Agudath Achim) of Wheaton. Mr. Horwitz is survived by his wife of 58 years, Annette R. Horwitz of Silver Spring; a brother, Nathan Horwitz of New York City; children, Desdra E. Horwitz of Silver Spring and Michael B. Horwitz of Austin, Texas; and three grandchildren. Robert E. Watkins Former Goodwill chief Robert E. Watkins, 90, former chief executive officer of Goodwill Industries International and an Asbury Methodist Village resident, died April 14 at Shady Grove Hospital of complications following a stroke. Mr. Watkins' career, which began in 1935, was with Goodwill Industries, serving as executive director of the Dayton, Ohio, and Los Angeles, Calif., units before becoming chief executive officer of the international organization in 1966. He retired in 1973. In 1991, he was elected to the Goodwill Industries Hall of Fame. Seven years later the Robert E. and Charlotte Watkins Fund for Mission Advancement was established by Goodwill Industries to honor each year a Goodwill leader that brings to fruition innovative ideas in rehabilitation services. Mr. Watkins was a resident of Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg for 23 years and had been very active in resident affairs. He is survived by his wife Charlotte, four children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Selma Brown Former clerical worker Selma Brown, 82, of Silver Spring, died May 23 at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She came to the D.C. area in the 1940s from Pennsylvania and had been a clerical worker. The Gazette had featured Mrs. Brown in two articles on the care she received from her daughter, Edith Brown, and from several area specialists in the final years of her life. Edith Brown had been honored by the National Parkinson's Foundation for her efforts to care for her mother at home. Brown had Parkinson's disease and a host of other illnesses. Dr. Jonathon Pincus, a neurologist with Georgetown University Medical Center, who coordinated Selma Brown's care, spoke at the funeral May 26 at Danzansky- Goldberg Memorial Chapel in Rockville. Dr. Macy Hall and other health-care providers attended the service. Selma Brown was the wife of the late Abraham Michael Brown. She is survived by her daughter, Edith Brown; son, Aaron Brown; and a granddaughter. Ezell Order of the Eastern Star member Minnie Tolley Ezell, 91, of Damascus died May 31 at her home. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Elizabeth Chapter 45, Norfolk, Va. and was a member of the Ghent Methodist Church of Virginia. She was the wife of the late Earl H. Ezell. Born in Snowden, Va., she was the daughter of the late Emmett D. Tolley and Sally Downey Tolley. Surviving are one daughter, Frances Worley Burlas of Damascus; three grandchildren and four great-children, as well as three nieces. Mr. Haines was a retired farmer and had also worked for many years with the Harry Green and John Greene Well Drilling Company. He was also an agent for Farmers Cooperative Association, Frederick. Mr. Haines was a member of Mt. View United Methodist Church. He was born in Purdum, the son of the late Walter E. Haines, Sr. and Rosie Smith Haines. He was the husband of Ruth Watkins Haines. Surviving besides his wife are son Lewis E. Haines and his wife Janet, of Damascus; granddaughter Shirley Appleby and her husband Paul Mark, of New Market; grandson Jason Haines of Damascus; great-grandchildren Courtney Haines and Steven Haines, both of Damascus; sisters Mazie Watkins and her husband Alvin of Frederick, Gertrude Solenburg of Winchester, Va.; brothers J. Herrmann, 85, died March 20 at Wilson Health Care Center. A resident of Gaithersburg, Mrs. Herrmann was born in Poolesville to the late Joseph Darby and Mary Chiswell Darby. She is survived by her son, Bill Herrmann and wife Nancy of Gaithersburg; a stepdaughter, Joy Fisher; and a sister, Lutie Culp. Mrs. Herrmann was predeceased by her husband, Ferdinand K. Jones Sr. Silver Spring Taxi Co. owner Lee W. Jones Sr., 94, died April 17 at Royal Palm Skilled Care Facility in Florida, where he had been a resident for the past 2 1/2 years. He was born in Washington, D.C., and had moved to Vero Beach from Miami 20 years ago. He was retired as owner of Silver Spring Taxi Co. of Silver Spring. He was a life member of the Masonic and Elks lodges and was a Protestant. Survivors include one daughter, Shirley L. Zeiler; daughter in law, Margaret Jones Stimeling of Vero Beach; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Private services were held April 22. Mrs. Lowe was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and ceramics. She was the wife of the late Donald Leon Lowe. She was born Nov. 14, 1930, in Seneca, the daughter of the late Charles and Gladys Hamman Barton. Surviving her are children Donald L. Lowe, Jr., and his wife Brenda of Damascus, Larry D, Lowe, and his wife Roberta, of Mount Airy, Adele J. Day, and her husband Jerry, David A. Lowe, and his wife Barbara, Darren L. Lowe, and his wife Melanie, all of Monrovia, Daniel L. Lowe, and his wife Beth of Frederick; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister Mary Ellen Burdette of Dickerson; brothers Ernest William Barton Sr. of Rockville and Aubrey G. Maurer, 83, of Silver Spring, formerly Ocean City, died June 2 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born in Clearfield, Pa., the son of the late Paul R. and Molly Neidrick Maurer, Mr. Maurer was the husband of Dorothy French Maurer. Mr. Maurer graduated from Clearfield School in Clearfield, Pa. He served in the Army in World War II as well as Korea, and retired as a captain. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart and a battlefield commission. After his service, Mr. Maurer became the commander of the Pennsylvania National Guard in Clearfield, Pa. He also worked as a furrier at the Clearfield Fur Co. He later moved to Wheaton and was a corrections officer for the Department of Correction in Washington, D.C. He retired in 1975. Mr. Maurer was a member of the Atlantic United Methodist Church, the Elks Club, the Ocean City Marlin Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 166 in Ocean City. He also was a member of Wheaton American Legion Post 268 and a lifelong member of Clearfield Volunteer Fire Department. He liked to travel, fish and watch the Redskins. Besides his wife, Dorothy, Mr. Maurer is survived by two daughters, Dawn D. Maurer of Sandy Spring and Bobbie Sue Abbott and husband, Tommy, of Olney; a sister, Myra Pyle of Pennsylvania; a brother, Robert Maurer of Florida; and many nieces and nephews. Newman Jr. Born in Bethesda, she was the daughter of the late Hillery Hawkins and Ella Bennett Hawkins. Surviving besides her husband are five daughters: Julie Snyder of Mount Airy, Sandra Newman, Deborah Newman, Patricia Newman and Tracy Newman, all of Laytonsville; two grandsons; two granddaughters; and two brothers: James Hawkins of Gaithersburg and Paul Hawkins of Rockville. Rogers Oliver, 85, of Chevy Chase, died May 24 at Suburban Hospital. Mr. Oliver was born in Louisville, Ky., and spent his 41-year career as an executive with Norfolk Southern Railway. He was superintendent of the Asheville, N.C., division of Southern Railway from 1948 until 1962. He graduated from St. Alban's School in Washington, D.C., and the University of Maryland. He was a member of Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Biltmore Forest Country Club and the Rotary Club of Asheville, the Poplar Island Yacht Club, and a longtime member and past president of the Chevy Chase Fire Board. Members of Station 7 on Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase draped the fire station in black bunting after Mr. Oliver's death. His first wife, Camille Parsons Oliver, died in 1961. Ronald Walter Smith Obstetrician Ronald Walter Smith, M.D., 69, obstetrician and gynecologist, died of a heart attack May 23. Born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., he was raised in Tunkhannock, Pa., receiving his first eight years of education in a one-room schoolhouse. He earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland in 1953 and a doctorate of medicine from George Washington School of Medicine in 1957. Dr. Smith joined the U.S. Navy in 1957, interning at the U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Albans, N.Y., from 1957 to 1958. He was the general medical officer at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Annapolis from 1958 to 1959, completed his residency at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Va., from 1959 to 1962, then served at the Naval Hospital in Annapolis from 1962 to 1967, where he was chief of department the last two years of active duty. Dr. Smith remained active in the Naval Reserve, attaining the rank of captain and serving as deputy fleet surgeon. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1991. Dr. Smith received his board certification in obstetrics and gynecology in 1966. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology at Group Health in Washington, D.C., from 1967 to 1970. He entered private practice in Olney in 1970. He was an emeritus staff member of Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, serving as chairman of obstetrics and gynecology from 1977 to 1980, as well as numerous other committees during his years of active practice. He retired from the staffs of Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville and Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. He practiced gynecology at Leisure World Medical Center after retiring from private practice in May 1999 until the time of his death. He was a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Montgomery County Medical Society and the Retired Officers Association. He was a member of the George Washington Society, sponsoring a scholarship for medical students. He was also a member of Manor Country Club, where he was active in the men's senior golf program. Henry Calvin Vaughan World War II veteran Henry Calvin Vaughan, 77, of Germantown, died May 30 at his residence. He was the husband of Frances J. Vaughan for 50 years. Born in Green Bay, Va., he was the son of the late James Wycliffe Vaughan and Sarah Lois Shefield Vaughan. He was a retired small appliance service technician. He served in World War II from Feb. 10, 1943, to Oct. 22, 1945, in Headquarters Battery 151st Field Artillery Battalion as a telephone and telegraph lineman. Among his decorations and citations were European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service Stars and Bronze Arrowhead, and the Purple Heart. Watkins Former CEO of Goodwill Industries International Robert E. Watkins, 90, former chief executive officer of Goodwill Industries International and an Asbury Methodist Village resident, died April 14 at Shady Grove Hospital of complications following a stroke. Mr. Watkins' career, which began in 1935, was with Goodwill Industries, serving as executive director of the Dayton, Ohio, and Los Angeles, Calif., units before becoming chief executive officer of the international organization in 1966. He retired in 1973. In 1991, he was elected to the Goodwill Industries Hall of Fame. Seven years later the Robert E. and Charlotte Watkins Fund for Mission Advancement was established by Goodwill Industries to honor each year a Goodwill leader that brings to fruition innovative ideas in rehabilitation services. Lively Jr., 40, of Silver Spring, a computer software expert with the Armed Forces Radiobiology Institute and volunteer soccer coach, died May 24 from multiple strokes at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. He was born in Houston, Texas. He was the great-great-great-great-grandson of President James Monroe. At the age of 5, Mr. Lively moved to the Washington area. He earned bachelor of science degrees in microbiology and computer science from the University of Maryland where he was a Phi Beta Kappa. He earned a masterís degree in computer system management from the University of Maryland and a masterís in computer science from Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering. At AFRI, he won the Outstanding Service Medal in September 1994, the highest honor the institute gives to a civilian employee. Outside of work, he enjoyed playing co-rec soccer and coaching indoor soccer for children at the Burtonsville United Soccer Club and the Calverton Recreational first-grade soccer team. Maurer, 83, of Silver Spring, formerly Ocean City, died June 2 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Born in Clearfield, Pa., the son of the late Paul R. and Molly Neidrick Maurer, Mr. Maurer was the husband of Dorothy French Maurer. Mr. Maurer graduated from Clearfield School in Clearfield. He served in the Army in World War II as well as Korea, and retired as a captain. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and a battlefield commission. After his service, Mr. Maurer became the commander of the Pennsylvania National Guard in Clearfield. He also worked as a furrier at the Clearfield Fur Co. He later moved to Wheaton and was a corrections officer for the Department of Correction in Washington, D.C. He retired in 1975. Mr. Maurer was a member of the Atlantic United Methodist Church, the Elks Club, the Ocean City Marlin Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 166 in Ocean City. He also was a member of Wheaton American Legion Post 268 and a lifelong member of Clearfield Volunteer Fire Department. He liked to travel, fish and watch the Redskins. Paukstitus, 83, a radio engineer at station WWDC for more than 32 years, died June 1 of a thoracic hemorrhage at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. Mr. Paukstitus was born in Minersville, Pa., where he graduated from Branch Township High School in 1934. He initially worked with his family in the coal mines of Northeastern Pennsylvania, but left the mines to attend the Capital Radio Engineering Institute in Washington, D.C., from which he received a degree in practical radio engineering in 1946. He began a career as an engineer at WWDC, where, over the next 32 years he was involved in numerous innovations and developments in the local radio industry, including the radio broadcasts of the Washington Senators games and the Catholic Mass for Shut-ins. He retired in 1978. Mr. Paukstitus was a longtime parishioner at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Silver Spring and a member of the Knights of Lithuania. Survivors, all of whom reside in the Washington, D.C., area, include his wife of 52 years, Emily Paukstitus; sons, Michael of Bethesda, Steve of Silver Spring and Rick of Gambrills; daughter, Ruthann Eiser of Silver Spring; and six grandchildren. Joseph M. Schepis Washington Gas COO Joseph M. Schepis, 47, of Chevy Chase, died of cancer June 3 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Mr. Schepis, president and chief operating officer of Washington Gas, was instrumental in moving Washington Gas from the regulated environment of its past and positioning the company to compete in a competitive marketplace. He championed restructuring utility services and worked cooperatively with regulators to move from traditional rate setting to performance-based pricing. Born in New York, Mr. Schepis was a long-time resident of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and was active in many civic and community organizations. He served on the board of trustees of The Lab School of Washington for eight years. He was also involved in the Spanish Catholic Centerís Corporate Advisory Council and was a supporter of the centerís annual gala. Mr. Schepis is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons, Joseph and Robert; one daughter, Julia; his parents, Dr. Joseph Schepis and Violet Schepis of Garden City, N.Y.; a brother, Anthony Schepis of Scarsdale, N.Y.; and a sister, Carol Ferrara of Vienna, Va. John J. Sharkey County resident John J. Sharkey of Montgomery Village died June 8. He was the son of Thelma E. Sharkey of Frederick, Md. and the late John J. Sharkey. Ronald Walter Smith Obstetrician Ronald Walter Smith, M.D., 69, obstetrician and gynecologist, died of a heart attack May 23. Born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., he was raised in Tunkhannock, Pa., receiving his first eight years of education in a one-room schoolhouse. He earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland in 1953 and a doctorate of medicine from George Washington School of Medicine in 1957. Dr. Smith joined the U.S. Navy in 1957, interning at the U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Albans, N.Y., from 1957 to 1958. He was the general medical officer at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Annapolis from 1958 to 1959, completed his residency at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Va., from 1959 to 1962, then served at the Naval Hospital in Annapolis from 1962 to 1967, where he was chief of department the last two years of active duty. He remained active in the Naval Reserve, attaining the rank of captain and serving as deputy fleet surgeon. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1991. Dr. Smith received his board certification in obstetrics and gynecology in 1966. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology at Group Health in Washington, D.C., from 1967 to 1970. He entered private practice in Olney in 1970. He was an emeritus staff member of Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, serving as chairman of obstetrics and gynecology from 1977 to 1980, as well as numerous other committees during his years of active practice. He retired from the staffs of Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville and Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. He practiced gynecology at Leisure World Medical Center after retiring from private practice in May 1999 until the time of his death. He was a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Montgomery County Medical Society and the Retired Officers Association. He was a member of the George Washington Society, sponsoring a scholarship for medical students. He was also a member of Manor Country Club, where he was active in the menís senior golf program. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Carol Shaffer Smith; sons, Gregory Smith and Ronald Smith Jr.; daughter, Alicia Harvey; stepsons and daughters-in- law, Stephen and Susan Myers and Douglas and Eileen Myers; stepdaughters and sons-in-law Cindy and Jeff Retterer, Linda and Steve Kindred, Robin and Bob Groves, and Cass and Tim Schaedig; 10 grandsons; seven granddaughters; and sister, Jane Aldridge. Following graduation from Gaithersburg High School, he attended Shepherd College and did his internship at the Veterans Hospital in Martinsburg, W. Va. In 1964, Tom was married to Carolyn Eckhardt in Darnestown Presbyterian Church. Both were very active in 4-H programs at the Agricultural Center in Gaithersburg. Carolyn was a former Montgomery County Fair Queen. Following their marriage, they moved to California where Tom continued his education at Stanford University and the University of California. During that time, he worked at the El Camino Hospital as an Inhalation Therapist. In 1973, they moved to Yakima, Wash. where Tom accepted the position of Vice President of the Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife Carolyn; a daughter Robyn and her husband, Karl Frederick; a daughter Jessica and her husband, Andy Hess, of Everett, Wash.; a brother John U. Ruth Rosett Cunin School teacher Ruth Rosett Cunin, 92, who taught in public schools in Washington, D.C. and Montgomery County for more than 60 years, died at her home in Kensington June 16. Born in Philadelphia in 1907, Cunin came to the District with her family as a child. She studied teaching at Wilson Teacher's College in the District, and in 1935 earned a bachelor's degree in education from George Washington University, where she later earned a master's degree in education. Cunin taught at Barnard, Rudolph, Keene and Shepherd elementary schools in the District, and retired at the age of 70. For the next 10 years, Cunin served as a regular substitute teacher at Woodacres Elementary School in Bethesda and Rock Creek Forest in Chevy Chase. She retired for a second time at the age of 80. During her retirement, Cunin continued teaching, specializing in teaching English as a Second Language to new immigrants at the Jewish Community Center in Rockville. She also worked as a volunteer at the Montgomery County Thrift Shop in Bethesda. Cunin's husband of 49 years, Hyman Cunin, a noted architect and professor at Howard University, died in 1985. He was born in Highland Park, Mich. He was the son of Edythe McKim Yeamans, currently of Brevard, N.C., and the late Dr. Willis Henry Yeamans. Mr. Yeamans graduated from high school in Royal Oak, Mich., in 1955. He earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1959 and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Michigan in 1961. He was affiliated with Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity. He joined International Business Machines (IBM) as a systems engineer in Detroit, Mich., in 1961 and retired as a consulting systems engineer from IBM's Design Center in Gaithersburg in 1992. He received numerous awards and honors during his 31-year career. Since 1994, he has been employed in a contractual arrangement with IBM. Mr. Yeamans was an active sports enthusiast, enjoying golf, disc golf, skiing, ice skating, bowling, tennis, horseback riding and sailing. He was the husband of Shirley Butler. Born in Silver Spring, he was the son of the late George Henry Butler Sr. and Carrie Blue Butler. Mr. Butler graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1946 and the University of Maryland in 1950. He served in the U. S. Army from 1951-1953. Mr. Butler and his wife operated Butler's Orchard in Germantown. He was a past president of Maryland Horticulture Society. Emerson Retired analyst Cecil E. Emerson, 57, of Damascus, formerly of Rockville, died June 27, 2000, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Mr. Emerson was a retired analyst from the Department of Defense, Washington, D.C. He had won numerous awards in his 30 years of service. He was of the Methodist faith and was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School, Rockville. Born Sept. 8, 1943 in Olney, he was a son of Hazel R. Emerson of Gaithersburg and the late Max Kelly Emerson. He was the husband of Connie F. Emerson. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two children: Deonna E. Born in Comus, Md., she was a long time resident of Washington, D.C. before returning to Maryland in the mid-1950's. Mrs. Ormond was a member of the Riverview United Methodist Church in Ormond Beach. Mrs. Ormond is survived by three brothers: John Hershey of Damascus, Harold L. Hershey of Rockville and Walter Hershey of Montgomery Village; three sisters: Katherine Frazier of Rockville, Leila H. Farmer and Laura Clagett of Gaithersburg; and two step-sons: Capt. A. C. Frothingham of Seattle, Wash. and Phil Frothingham of Columbia, S.C. Ruth Wilson Heintze Retired teacher Ruth Wilson Heintze, 83, of Washington, D.C., died June 12 at Manor Care Nursing Home in Potomac. Mrs. Heintze, a retired Montgomery County Public Schools teacher, was instrumental in developing the "new math" program at Thomas W. Pyle Middle School. Noted for her effective teaching strategies, she taught at Pyle and at Brookmont Elementary School for more than 20 years. In 1959 she also served as acting principal. Born in East Liverpool, Ohio, Mrs. Heintze lived in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area for more than 70 years and was a member of the National City Christian Church in Washington. In 1937 she married noted Washington musician and pianist Gustav J. Heintze. As an undergraduate student and member of the Kappa Delta Sorority, she attended the University of Maryland at College Park. In 1961 she received a master's degree in educational administration from George Washington University. Four years later, Mrs. Heintze was initiated into the Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Sorority. In her spare time, Mrs. Heintze enjoyed teaching piano, tutoring students, gardening and needlework. Mrs. Heintze is survived by her husband, Gustav; a daughter, Anna May Cowan of Newburg, Md.; two sons, Gustav Joseph Heintze Jr. of Silver Spring and James R. Heintze of Derwood; and 10 grandchildren. A third son, Richard Gustav Heintze, died in 1981. Martha L. Hinshaw Printer Martha L. Hinshaw, age 86, of Gaithersburg, died on Friday, June 23 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville. Born in Illinois, she was the wife of Maurice L. Hinshaw. Mrs. Hinshaw had worked as a printer. Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Carol Cummings of California and a stepdaughter, Lila Staley of Illinois. She is also survived by a brother, Martin W. Lieselotte Hoettges-Allen Retired Acme employee Lieselotte Hoettges-Allen, 77, of Silver Spring, died of lung cancer May 30. Hoettges-Allen was born and raised in Wuppertal-Elberfeld, Germany, where she completed 12 years of schooling plus three years apprenticeship in sales. She worked for the U.S. Air Force Post Exchange in Wiesbaden, Germany, for several years after World War II. She immigrated to the United States in 1951. After immigration, she lived in Cumberland and the relocated to Washington, D.C. She moved to Silver Spring in 1962. She worked as a clerk/cashier for Acme Markets at Veirs Mill and Randolph roads for 30 years before retiring in 1982. Hoettges-Allen was active in volunteer work. She was a life member of Montgomery Cedarettes of Montgomery Forest, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Women of the Moose of Wheaton Lodge and the Ladies auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Silver Spring. Survivors include husband, Robert O. Allen of Silver Spring; daughter, Ulrike Grosse of Miami, Fla.; a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and one nephew of Wiesbaden, Germany. Malohn, 82, of Covington, Ga., and a long-time resident of Gaithersburg, died June 24. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Robert H. Malohn, of Covington, Ga.; son Mr. Larry Malohn of Morristown, Colo.; daughter Mrs. Sylvia Malohn Dotson, Covington, Ga; grandchildren and a great grandchild. Perry Former Gaithersburg mayor Mr. James F. Perry, age 78, of Big Timber, Mont., died Tuesday, May 30, at Livingston (Mont.) Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Lillian Perry. Born in Frederick, he was the son of the late Harry Clay and Nannia Bentz Perry. Harry Clay Perry was the Mayor of Gaithersburg, and the Perry Parkway in town bears his name. Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Diane Colpo and husband James of Big Timber, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Priebe, 82, of Silver Spring, formerly of Unity, died June 24 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. He had worked as a laborer most of his life. Marvin Herbert Sedon, 81, formerly of Poolesville, died June 12, 2000. Capt. Sedon's career included two tours of active duty in the U. S. Naval Reserve. He was a civilian engineer with the Navy Bureau of Ordnance. Later, he was a division director of the Maintenance Policy and Engineering Division of the Naval Air Systems Command. He was head of the General Equipment Division in the Bureau of Naval Weapons. He was born July 5, 1918 in Detroit, Mich., a son of the late Sam and Nora Saperstein Sedon. Surviving is his daughter Leslie C. Hanby and husband Michael of Madison, Conn.; two sons, Douglas N. Sedon and wife Ellen of Jefferson, Md. and Ron Bale of Ventura, Calif. Roy Wilson Shifflet Retired plumber Roy Wilson Shifflet, 78, of Montgomery Village, formerly of Rockville, died Saturday at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville. Born in Virginia, he was the son of the late Guy Wilson Shifflet and Helen Virginia Kirkpatrick Shifflet. He was the husband of Lacey Madeline Shifflet. Mr. Shifflet was a retired plumber. He was a member of the upper Seneca Baptist Church in Cedar Grove. He had served in the Army in WWII in the South Pacific. He was a member of American Legion Post 297. Mr. Shifflet was a baseball fan, having played semi-pro baseball in his youth. He enjoyed collecting stamps and miniature cars. He was also actively interested in Native American Culture, especially the Choctaw Nation. Besides his wife, he is survived by six children, Patricia Rodgers of Danville, Va., Gordon Shifflet of Olney, Warren C. Shifflet of Rockville, Keith A. Shifflet of Derwood, Wade C. Shifflet of Montgomery Village, and Archie H. Williams of Florida; a sister, Edna Dant of Virginia; two brothers, Claude Shifflett of Frederick and Don Shifflet of Florida; and 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Georgeann Gude Wood Special fund raiser Georgeann Gude Wood, 54, of Comus, Md., died June 16 at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was the wife of Brooks C. B. Wood. She was the daughter of Nancy N. Gude of Potomac and the late Adolph E. Gude Jr. Mrs. Wood was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a founding member of the Upper Montgomery County Women's Club, and an honorary member of the Monocacy Garden Club. She had a special interest in St. Peter's Episcopal Church and the Barnesville School for which she served twice on the board of directors (once along with her father Adolph E. Gude Jr.). Mrs. Wood enjoyed and was known for her involvement in special fund raising activities for St. Peter's Episcopal Church, the Barnesville School and St. John's Literary Institute at Prospect Hall. Surviving besides her husband and mother, is one son, A. Crosby Wood of Comus; two sisters, Lacey Ann Gude of Washington, D.C., and Elizabeth Gude Monroe of Rockville; as well as eight nephews and seven nieces. Born in Chicago, Mrs. Gestner earned a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Maryland. She was an art teacher and was the Eucharistic Minister of Saint Martin Parish. She is survived by four children: Cathleen Carroll of Montgomery Village; Robert Carroll of New Martinsville, W. Va., John Carroll of Charlotte, N.C., and Joel Carroll of Germantown. She is also survived by four grandchildren. Funeral services were held June 26, at St. Martins. Burial was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
