NOTE: This is a copy of my great grandfather's, Francois Fontenot, CSA 
Pension Application and his wife's application for widow's benefits. 
I have found dates of birth & death on Francois and his wife that is
not easily attainable anywhere else, along with their children's names,
not to mention, the pertinent military information.

SOLDIER'S APPLICATION FOR PENSOIN.

I, Francois Fontenot, a native of Louisiana, and now a citizen of Louisana, resident at
(near) Church Point,  in  the Parish of St. Landry, in said State of Louisiana, and who was
a soldier from the State of Louisiana in the Confederate States army, in the war between
the United States and the Confederate States, do hereby apply for aid under Article 303 of
the Constitution of 1898, and subsequent Acts of the State Legislature thereunder, and I
do solemnly swear that I served the Confederate States honorably from the day of my
enlistment until the close of the civil war, (or until discharged or paroled as the case may
be), as shown by answers below, and that I remained true to the Confederate cause until
the surrender, and that I am now in indigent circumstances, and unable to earn a livelihood
by my own labor or skill, and that I am not salaried or otherwise provided for by the State
of Louisiana or by any other State or government, and am entitled to receive the benefits
of said Acts, as futher shown by my answers to the questions below, which I swear to be
true and correct:

  1.  When and were were you born?
       Answer:  year 1846, May 10th, near Church Point, LA.
  2.  When and were did you enlist?
       Answer:  at Opelousas, LA.
  3.  Give the letter of your Company and the number of your Regiment.
       Answer:  Co. D, 7th LA Cavalry, General Thomas.
  4.  Give branch of service, Artillery, Infantry, Cavalry or Navy; if in Navy give name or 
        names of vessels you served in, or in what capacity.
       Answer:  Cavalry.
  5.  If discharged or paroled from the army, where were you, and what did you do until 
       the close of the war?
       Answer:  No.
  6.  Where were you at the surrender?
       Answer:  near Alexandria, LA.
  7.  If a prisoner, in what camp, and where were you released, and to where sent?
       Answer:  No.
  8.  Did you take the oath of allegiance to the United States Government at any time 
       during the war? If so, when and where?
       Answer:  No.
  9.  How long have you been a resident of the State of Louisiana next preceding the date 
        of this application?  Where have you resided during that period?
       Answer:  Since 1846.
10.  Are you engaged in any business?  If so, what do you earn?
       Answer:  No.
11.  Have you or your wife any estate in your own right, real or personal, and what is its 
       value?
       Answer:  Have no property whatever, live with my children.
12.  Give name of two or more of your comrades, with their postoffice addresses.
       Answer:  Lastie Matt and Dosita Doucet, Church Point, LA.
13.  Give your Postoffice address and that of two witnesses.
       Answer:  Church Point, LA.

Barousse, Notary Public of said Parish, the above named Francois Fontenot, the applicant,
with whom I am personally acquainted, and having the application read and explained to
him as well as the statements and answers therein made, made oath that the statements and
answers are true.

facts set forth and statements made in his application are correct and true to the best of
their knowledge and belief, and that they have no interest in this claim, and that said
applicant's habits are good and free from dishonor.

is Lastie Matt and Dosita Doucet, both residents of the Parish of Acadia, state of
Louisiana, who after having been duly sworn according to law, deposes and say that they
served with Francois Fontenot who was in Company D, 7th, Louisiana, Cavalry, under
General Thomas, and that they were with him at near Alexandria, La. at the surrender, and
that he served honorably until discharge.

WIDOW'S APPLICATION FOR PENSION

STATE OF LOUISIANA
     PARISH OF  Acadia}
ON THIS 28th day of March 1921, personally appeared before me, Laurent Barousse,
Notary Public, within and for said Parish and State, Mrs. Azalie Fontenot, aged 63 years, a
resident of the Church Point of 3rd Ward Parish of Acadia and State of Louisiana, who
being duly sworn according to law, declares she is the widow of Francois Fontenot, who
entered the service of the Confederate States during the civil war under the name of
Francois Fontenot,
(stamped over the application's questions regarding 
soldier's rank and location and other pertinent military
          information, are the words: )
REFER TO HER DECEASED HUSBAND'S APPLICATION,
     WHO WAS A PENSIONER.

that she was married to the said soldier under the name of Azelie Richard on the 15th day
of December 1879, by Rev. C. A. Vialletton, Catholic Priest at Church Point, LA; that she
has not married again, and that she is now in indigent circumstances and unable to earn a
livelihood by her own labor or skill; that she is not married or otherwise provided for by
the State of Louisiana or by any other State or Government; that her said husband died on
the 14th day of March 1921 at near Church Point Acadia Parish La.; that she has resided
in the State of Louisiana for 63 years next preceding the date of this application, and that
she claims the aid and benefit of Article 303 of the Constitution of 1898 and subsequent
Acts of the Legislature of the State thereunder, as is futher shown by her answers to the
following questions, which she swears to be true and correct:
     1.  Under what circumstances did your husband die?
           Answer:  my husband was an invalide for a year or over.
     2.  Where is he buried?
           Answer:  Church Point, Acadia Parish, Louisiana
     3.  What are your means of support?
           Answer:  have to depend on my children for support, they are all from (?) and 
                 have large families.
     4.  What is the value of your property, real and personal, if any?
           Answer:  about $200.00 of personal property.
     5.  Have you conveyed property to any one in the past few years?
           Answer:  no never around any real estate, only small personal.
     6.  If any, how much and to whom conveyed?
           Answer:  
     7.  Give your postoffice address and that of your two witnesses.
           Answer:  Church Point, Acadia Parish, Louisiana.

foregoing declaration, and that they verily believe that the facts and declaration of said
claimant are true and correct, that their acquaintance with her for 40 years and 15 years,
respectively, justify them in making this statement, and that she is the identical person she
represents herself to be, and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.

Fontenot and Madeleine Stoute - and - Azelie Richard, daughter of Alfred Richard and
Azema Leger, were united in the Holy Bonds of Matrimony, at Church Point, Louisiana,
December 15, 1879, in presence of Aurelien Thibodeaux, W. J. Knight and Theodule
Thibodeaux acting as witnesses and the Rev. C. A. Vialletton officiating.
