Funeral services for Mrs. Evelyn Trice DEEN, 93, of
Alma, will be held Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 at 11 a.m.
at The First Methodist Church in Alma. Mrs. Deen died
Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003 at Riverside Nursing Home in
Thomaston. Crosby Funeral Home of Alma is in charge of
arrangements. Mrs. Deen was a member of the Methodist
Church for 83 years, having joined the Cochran
Methodist Church at age 10. In years past, Mrs. Deen
was a homemaker and faithful community servant,
holding offices in various church and civic
organizations. She was a member of the United
Methodist Women, Philanthea of Men's S.S. Class,
Fellowship #1, Homemaker's Club and the Alma Exchange
Bank's "Senior Partners." Mrs. Deen was a charter
lifetime member of Alma Garden Club and Alma Women's
Club. She served on the first advisory committee for
Sun City Retirement Village for several years. She
served on Bacon County Library Board for 13 years,
several of those years she represented Alma as a
member of the Regional Library Board in Waycross. Mrs.
Deen was a native of Bleckley County and the wife of
the late Floyd Deen Sr. Survivors include three sons
and daughters-in-law, Floyd Deen Jr., M.D. and Judy
Deen of Wadesboro, N.C., Johnny T. Deen, M.D. and
Betty Deen of Thomaston and Thomas C. Deen of Alma and
Claudia Deen of St. Simons Island; grandchildren, K.
Murray Deen, M.D. and Byron F. Deen, M.D. of
Thomaston, Jason B. Deen, M.D. of Augusta, Candace L.
Deen, J.D. and Julie Deen Schneider, J.D. of Atlanta,
Adam B. Deen of Waycross and Kelli R. Deen of Alma;
and one great-grandson. Kenneth Murray Deen Jr. In
lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the
alma Methodist Church, 603 North Dixon Street, Alma,
GA 31510. Designated for missions.


Funeral services for Mr. Harry Lee "YoYo" DRAKE, 50,
of Matthews Avenue, were held Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003
at 2 p.m. at the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church with
the Rev. W.K. Dixon officiating, assisted by the Rev.
Willie Henry Williams and Minister Morris McKinney.
Burial followed in the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Mr.
Drake died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003 at Christian
Ministries Hospice in Griffin. Trice Funeral Home was
in charge of arrangements. Mr. Drake was a lifelong
resident of Upson County. He was formerly employed by
Hill Construction Company. Survivors include his
mother, Mrs. Eddie Mae Drake of Thomaston; daughters,
Ms. Deidra Trice of Macon and Ms. Aflreda Wellmaker of
Thomaston; sons, Mr. Eric Lamar Drake and Moutayvayon
"Mo" Drake, both of Thomaston; a brother, Mr. Walter
James Drake of Manchester; sisters, Ms. Diane Drake,
Ms. Alma Drake, Mrs. Johnny Mae Reviere and Mrs. Ada
Mae Martin, all of Thomaston; an adopted sister, Ms.
Elizabeth Johnson of Thomaston; a devoted friend, Ms.
Bertha Mae Respress of Thomaston; uncle and aunt, Mr.
Joe (Barbara Ann) white of Thomaston; six
grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins

Funeral services for Mrs. Patricia "Pat" Hudgins
FULLER, 64, of Geneva, will be held Tuesday, Dec. 2,
2003 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Coggins Funeral Home
with the Rev. Chip Grantham officiating. Burial will
follow in Upson Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Fuller died
Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003 at the Columbus Hospice. Coggins
Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Fuller
was a registered nurse. She worked for Care South Home
Healthcare. She was a member of Box Springs Methodist
Church. Survivors include her husband, Milton A.
Fuller of Geneva; daughters, Mrs. Melody Bowers of
Thomaston, Mrs. Dee Harris of Naples, Fla. and Mrs.
Pam Torbert of Barnesville; a stepson, Mr. Floyd B.
Fuller of Kennesaw; a brother, Mr. Kenneth Mathis of
Norwalk, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Estelle Connell of
Warner Robins; 11 grandchildren; two great-
grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 12 step-
great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Monday
evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.


Funeral services for Mrs. Runell Stephens HANKINSON,
91, of Highway 19 North, will be held Tuesday, Dec. 2,
2003 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Coggins Funeral Home
with the Rev. Wayne Collins officiating. Burial will
follow in Upson Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Hankinson died
Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003 at Providence Nursing Care
Center. Coggins Funeral Home is in charge of
arrangements. Mrs. Hankinson was born in Dekalb
County, Ga. She worked in the spinning room at Martha
Mill where she retired with 20 years of service. Mrs.
Hankinson is the widow of the late Mr. James Brown
Hankinson.; Survivors include her son, Mr. Bobby
(Barbara) Hankinson of Thomaston; brothers, Nathan
(Georgia) Stephens and Walter (Evelyn) Stephens, all
of Snellville and Emmett Stephens of Mt. Verde, Fla.;
three grandchildren; Kevin Hankinson and Kelly (Randy)
Moseley, all of Thomaston and Karla (Ben) Clemons of
Marietta; eight great-grandchildren; Kyle, Stephanie
and Kendall Hankinson and Becky and Chris Moseley, all

Funeral services for Mr. William H. HIGHTOWER, Jr.,
91, of Poplar Drive were held Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003
at 11 a.m. at the Thomaston First United Methodist
Church with Dr. Robert W, Brown officiating. Burial
followed in Southview Cemetery. Mr. Hightower died
Thursday Nov. 27, 2003 at his residence. Pasley-
Fletcher Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hightower was born in LaGrange, raised in
Thomaston, where he graduated from R.E. Lee Institute
and served as the first Battalion Commander for the
R.E. Lee JROTC program. He received his B.B.A. degree
from Emory University in 1934 and began employment
with Thomaston Mills that year. He became vice
president of Thomaston Mills in 1954 and held various
positions until becoming chairman and chief executive
officer in 1974. He has also been president of
Community Enterprises, Inc., Thomaston Broadcasting
Company, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He has
served as director of the American Textile
Manufacturers Institute, the Georgia Textile
Manufacturers Association, the Citizens and Southern
National Bank Advisory Board, and Interfinancial. He
has served as board member and chairman of the
Thomaston Board of Education and member of the Board
of Stewards, First United Methodist Church. At Emory,
Mr. Hightower has served on the Committee of One
Hundred, the Lamplighter Society, the Board of
Visitors and had been President of the Sigma Chi
fraternity. In 1980 he established the Hightower
Lecture series, one of the most significant
lectureships on the Emory campus. Mr. Hightower was
elected an alumnus trustee of Emory University in 1976
and became trustee emeritus in 1982. He was an avid
golfer being a long time member of the Thomaston
Country Club and Capitol City Club in Atlanta. He
enjoyed hunting and training his own quail dogs in his
younger years, and later became a serious gardener, He
was preceded in death by his wife, Elinor Hamilton
Hightower and son, W. Harrison Hightower, III.
Survivors include a a son, Neil H Hightower;
daughters-in-law, Kay and Angie Hightower;
grandchildren, William H. Hightower IV, Neil H.
Hightower, Jr., John B. Hightower, Angelyn H. Peacock
and Heidi H. Brewton; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Deacon Alfred PERDUE Sr. 85, of Meansville, died
Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at the DeKalb Medical Center in
Decatur, Ga. Funeral arrangements will be announced at
a later date by Bentley & Sons Funeral Home. Survivors
include seven children, Mrs. Mary (Marvin) Fowler of
Decatur, Mrs. Annie Stanley of Rochester, N.Y., Mrs.
Annie Thomas of Hobe Sound, Fla., Mr. Sylvester Perdue
of Decatur, Mr. Alfred (Regina) Perdue Jr. of Tampa,
Fla and Mr. Alton James Reid of Griffin; 26
grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren and two great-
great-granchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Mattie Holmes
of Homestead, Fla., Mrs. Josephine Howard of Miami,
Fla. and Mrs. Marie (Pete) Walker of Concord; a
brother, Mr. George Edmonds of Cincinnati Ohio;
several nieces and nephews; and a host of other
relatives who mourn his death. The Perdue and Woodard

Funeral services for Mrs. Joy Miller ROBERTS, 74, of
Willingham Springs Road, were held Saturday, Nov. 29,
2003 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Coggins Funeral Home
with the Rev. Don Coogler officiating. Burial followed
in Crystal Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Roberts died Wednesday,
Nov. 26, 2003 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Roberts was born in Oconee County, Ga. but lived
in Thomaston for many years. She was retired from B.F.
Goodrich of Thomaston where she worked for over 30
years in the twister room. Mrs. Roberts was a member
of Mountain View Baptist Church. Survivors include her
daughters, Mrs. Ann Gibb, Mrs. Peggy Ingram and Mrs.
Virginia Wyatt, all of Thomaston; five grandchildren;
and 11 great-grandchildren.


Funeral services for Mr. Mitchell Arthur SELPH, 75, of
Fallin Street, were held Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003 at 2
p.m. in the chapel of Coggins Funeral Home with the
Rev. Roy Grimes officiating. Burial followed in
Crystal Hill Cemetery. Mr. Selph died Friday, Nov. 28,
2003 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Coggins Funeral
Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Selph was born
in Telfair County, Ga., but lived in the Thomaston
area for many years. He was retired from Thomaston
Mills where he worked for over 28 years as an
electrician. Mr. Selph was a member of Red Hill
Holiness Church of Milan, Ga. Survivors include his
wife, Mrs. Wyolene Selph of Thomaston; sons, Mr. Bobby
R. Selph of Stockbridge and Mr. Kenneth (Debbie) Selph
of Macon; brothers, Mr. Luther Selph, Mr. Roy Selph
and Mr. Russell Selph, all of McRae; sisters, Mr. Opal
Grimes of McRae and Mrs. Lois Towns of Milan; a
grandson, Mr. Chris (Crystal) Selph of Thomaston; and
great-granddaughters, Miss Lacy Michelle Selph and
Miss Audrey Lynn Selph, both of Thomaston.

Graveside services for Mrs. Frances Gordy Perkins
THOMAS, 93, of Dekalb County, formerly of Thomaston,
were held Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at 3 p.m. in Glenwood
Cemetery in Thomaston. Mrs. Thomas died Thursday, Nov.
27, 2003 on her 93rd birthday. A.S. Turner & Sons
Funeral Home of Decatur was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husbands,
Marion Capers Perkins and James Jefferson Thomas.
Frances and her husband, Marion, owned and operated
Star Grocery in Thomaston for 25 years. She was an
active member of Thomaston First Baptist Church and
several civic associations. She and Marion moved to
Atlanta in 1964 and lived with their daughter, Marilyn
and her family for 20 years. Frances was employed in
the diamond inventory department of Elfman's in Cobb
County for 18 years when she retired. After her
husband Marion's death, she married Jimmy and they
were married for 13 years until he passed away at the
age of 99. Mrs. Thomas was a long-time member of
Briarcliff Baptist Church in Atlanta. She and Jimmy
Thomas were residents of Kings Bridge Retirement
Center for three years. Frances was residing in Tucker
Nursing Home at the time of her death. Frances, who
was an outgoing person and never met a stranger, loved
to talk to everyone. She spent her life in service to
others; comforting the sick and bereaved and freely
feeding those in need from her grocery store in
Thomaston. Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn
"Lyn" (Gary) Akins; grandsons, Alan (Cindy) Akins of
Suwanee and Charles (Karen) Akins of Columbia, S.C.
and Brian and David of Atlanta; great-grandchildren,
Daniel and Shannon Akins of Suwanee and Andrew Akins
of Dunwoody; sister-in-law, Mrs. Francis (Margaret)
Perkins of Madison; a niece, Mary Gayle P. (Roy)
Morris of Covington; a nephew, Jan Marion (Carolyn)
Evans of Signal Mountain, Tenn; three grand-nieces; a
grand-nephew and great-grandnephews.

Nov. 27, 2003 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

as a son, Mr. Hayes Drake Jr. of Atlanta; and a host

his wife, Mrs. Edith Atwater of Thomaston; a son, Mr.
Willie George (Johnette) Hughley of Thomaston; nieces,

Mrs. Kathleen BRIDGEMAN, 71, of Sherri Street, died
Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003 at her residence.Funeral

Mrs. Nancy CARROLL, 55, of Atwater Road, died
Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003 at her residence. Funeral

Mrs. Carrie Mae Brown DENNIS, 86, of Gordon School
Road, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003 at Providence Health
Care. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a
later date by Trice Funeral Home. Mrs. Dennis was born
in Upson County. She moved to Detroit, Mich. where she
lived her adult life then moved back to Upson County
in 1998. Survivors include a devoted niece who took
care of her, Mrs. Eloise Brown Mann of Thomaston;
other nieces and nephews, Mrs. Mary-Kate (Shedrich)
Risper, Mrs. Mary Nell Lucear, Mr. Benjamin (Mable)
Brown, Mr. James Henry (Georgia) Brown, Mr. Mitchell
(Nancy) Brown and Mrs. Shelia (Milve) Colbert, all of
Thomaston, Mrs. Florence (Clifford) Holsey of
Milledgeville, Mr. Leon (Annie Clyde) Brown of Augusta
and Mr. Dennis (Linda) Brown of Macon; a host of
great-nieces and great-nephews; and two cousins, Mrs.
Tressie Walker of Thomaston and Mr. Abraham Brown of
Detroit, Mich. The family is receiving friends at 302

Funeral services for Mr. Charles James DUNCAN, 78, of
Thomaston, were held Friday, Dec. 5, 2003 at 11 a.m.
at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Barber
officiating. Burial followed in Southview Cemetery.
Mr. Duncan died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 at the
University Hospital in Augusta. Coggins Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Duncan was born in
Houston Co., Ga. He was self-employed for 50 years as
a wholesale produce dealer. Mr. Duncan was a member of
the Thomaston First Baptist Church and a member of the
Fellowship Sunday School Class for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Duncan of Thomaston;
a son, Mr. Charles Matt Duncan of Thomaston; a
daughter, Mrs. Teresa Sandefur of Mooresville, N.C.;
brother, Mr. Robert M. "Bud" Duncan of Thomaston;
sisters, Mrs. Remona Anderson of Barnesville, Mrs.
Geneva Mullins of Florida and Mrs. Shirley Nix of
Thomaston; and six grandchildren; Lora and Chase
Sandefur and Preston, Schuylar, Maxwell and Matthew
Duncan. Memorial donations may be made to the First

Graveside services for Mrs. Betty Howell GEORGE, 86,
of Fort Valley, will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003 at
2 p.m. in Oaklawn Cemetery in Fort Valley with the
Rev. Mike Hall officiating. Mrs. George died Tuesday,
Dec. 2, 2003. Rooks Funeral Home of Fort Valley is in
charge of arrangements. Mrs. George was born in
Thomaston, Ga. She was a retired civil service worker
at Robins Air Force Base. She was a member of Fort
Valley Presbyterian Church. Mrs. George was preceded
in death by her husband, Charles E. George Sr.
Survivors include her son, Charles E. George Jr.; a
grandson, Charles E. George III; and brothers, Tommy
Howell, Bobby Howell and Kenneth Howell. In lieu of

Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Crews HUBBARD, 95, of
Woodland, were held Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003 at 2 p.m.
at Trinity Baptist Church in Manchester. Burial
followed in Meriwether Memory Gardens. Mrs. Hubbard
died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at her residence. Smith-
Steele-Meadows Funeral Home of Manchester was in
charge of arrangements. Mrs. Hubbard was born April 8,
1908 in Columbia County, Fla. She was the daughter of
Joseph Milton Crews and Eady Register Crews. She was
retired as a Nurses Aid at Riverside Hospital in
Jacksonville, Fla. Mrs. Hubbard was a member of the
Thomaston Church of God. She was preceded in death by
a son, Alden M. Hubbard, and a daughter, Doris H.
Nichols. Survivors include five granddaughters, Sandra
(Paul) Higginbotham of Woodland, Karen (Mack) Jones of
Valley, Ala., Janice (Bob) Barfield of Snellville,
Lynell Allen of Stone Mountain and Cheryl (Gene)
Ledbetter of Mableton; two grandsons, Ronnie E.
(Jeannine) Nichols of Middleburg, Fla. and Algin (Deb)
Hubbard of Carrollton; 16 great-grandchildren; and 18
great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Trooper Tony M. LUMLEY, 36, of
The Rock were held Friday, Dec. 5, 2003 at 11 a.m. at
the Griffin First Assembly of God Church with the Rev.
Al Shackelford officiating. Burial followed in the
Moody Memorial Gardens in Zebulon. Trooper Lumley died
Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 from injuries he sustained in an
automobile accident in the line of duty. Conner-
Westbury Funeral Home of Griffin was in charge of
arrangements. Mr. Lumley was born in Laurens County on
Oct. 26, 1967. He was a 1985 graduate of Pike County
High School and has been with the Georgia State Patrol
since October 2002 where he was stationed at Post #1.
He was a member of the Hollonville Baptist Church and
a member of the Montgomery Masonic Lodge #31 in
Zebulon. Survivors include his wife, Misty Lumley;
daughters, Nikki and Brooke; father and mother,
William and Sara Lumley of The Rock; a brother, Tim
Lumley of The Rock, a sister, Kimberly Smith of
Augusta; sister-in-law, Christy Silver of Concord; and
several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, a
trust fund has been set up at the United Bank, 110
Griffin Street, Zebulon, GA 30295, for his children.

Private burial services for Mr. Jerry P. POSEY, 53, of
Jeff Davis Road, were held in Turner's Chapel Church
Cemetery in Butler. Mr. Posey died Wednesday, Dec. 3,
2003 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Coggins Funeral
Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Posey was born
in Taylor County, Ga., but lived in the Thomaston area
for many years. He was retired from Reddick
Construction Company where he worked as a carpenter.
Survivors include his daughters, Mrs. Michelle Smith
and Mrs. Sherry Sumner, both of Thomaston; a brother,
Mr. Ronnie Posey of Meansville; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Rhoda Vining SIMPSON, 30, of
Yatesville Highway, were held Friday, Dec. 5, 2003 at
11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Drew

followed in the Shiloh Church Cemetery. Mrs. Simpson
died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 at the Medical Center of

of Upson County. She was a homemaker and a 1991
graduate of Upson High School. She was a member of

was a native of Valdosta, Ga., but had lived in Molena
for a number of years. He was the son of the late Mr.
Clarence Whitt and Mrs. Mildred Smith. He was a tree

78, of Skelton Drive, will be held Thursday, Dec. 11,

Fred Blackmon, Minister Mary Kate Kendall and the Rev.
Charles Willis. Mrs. Andrews died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003

lifelong resident of Upson County. She was a

many years. He served his country for over seven years
in the United States Army. Mr. Litchfield was employed
with the Weyerhauser Corp. of Griffin as an assistant

Methodist Church of Thomaston. Survivors include his
wife, Mrs. Frieda Litchfield, of Thomaston; a son, Mr.
Randy T. Litchfield of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughters,

Mrs. Martha Truitt McELHENNEY, 76, of Conyers,
formerly of Thomaston, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003
at Rockdale Hospital in Conyers. Funeral arrangements

Memorial services for Mrs. Marie Garrett McLARTY, 91,
of Fort Meyers, Fla. will be held Thursday, Dec. 11,
2003 at 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of
Fort Meyers, Fla. A graveside service will be held by
Mrs. McLarty's nephew, the Rev. Robert Borom, on
Monday, Dec. 15, 2003 in Westview Cemetery in Atlanta.
Mrs. McLarty died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003 in Fort
Meyers, Fla. Mrs. McLarty was born Feb. 4, 1912, the
daughter of Dr. Eli and Martha Isabella Gill Garrett.
She attended high school in Butler, Ga. and attended
Andrew College on a music scholarship. She graduated
from Georgia State College for Women (now Georgia
College) in 1934. She began a teaching career in
Thomaston, Ga. where she met and married Paul Marvin
McLarty in 1936. Paul's career took her to Atlanta,
New York, and finally to New Jersey where she resumed
her teaching career in Westfield, N.J. While living in
New Jersey, Paul and Marie were members of Westfield
United Methodist Church. She retired from a 22-year
teaching career in 1976. In 1991, she and her husband
moved to Fort Myers, Fla. and spent summers in the
1990's in Highlands, N.C. She and her husband were
very active in the United Methodist Church. At her
death, she was a member of First United Methodist
Church of Fort Myers, Fla. While living in Atlanta,
she and her husband became charter members of
Northside United Methodist Church. She was church
organist at the First United Methodist Church in
Thomaston. She was very active in the Daughters of the
American Revolution in Westfield, N.J. in addition to
her many other church and civic activities. During
their summers in Highlands, the McLartys sang in the
church choir at Highlands United Methodist Church
Marie is remembered as a loving, spirited, talented,
generous and beautiful person by her friends and
family. Survivors include her husband, Paul M. McLarty
Sr., of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Mildred G. Borom
of Mt, Pleasant, S.C,; a son, Paul M. McLarty, Jr. and
wife Ruth B. McLarty, of Atlanta; daughters Merryl M.
Hagan and husband Sam Hagan, of Fort Myers, Fla. and
Martha M. Bonnefond and husband Bob Bonnefond of
Severn, Md.; four grandchildren, Tim McLarty and wife

Mrs. Nelson was a native of Richland, Ga., but lived
in Thomaston since 1948. She was the daughter of the
late Ammie Glenn Abell and the late Robert Alex Abell
Sr. She graduated from the Richland High School as the
salutatorian. Mrs. Nelson attended Georgia State
College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia
Southwestern in Americus and Bessie Tift College in
Forsyth. A dedicated elementary school teacher for 30
years, Mrs. Nelson, taught at Alma, Woodbury and
Thomaston. After retirement, Mrs. Nelson volunteered
with the Auxiliary of the Upson Regional Medical
Center. She was a member of the First United Methodist
Church in Thomaston where she was involved in the
Church Circle and the Tumlin Sunday School Class. She
enjoyed playing bridge and had many friends. Mrs.
Nelson was preceded in death by her parents, a
brother, Robert Alex Abell Jr. and her husband, Thomas
J. Nelson. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Karen
Nelson Harvey of Columbus; a sister, Mrs. Charles E.
(Kathryn) Hamilton of Columbus; and two
granddaughters, Mrs. Matthew (Kelli) Hilde of
Syracuse, N.Y. and Miss Krissy Harvey of Columbus.

officiating. Mrs. Nixon died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2003 at
Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home

Nixon was born in Thomaston, Ga. on Dec. 16, 1910 and
was the third daughter of the late Albert Matthews and
Josephine Stamps Matthews. She graduated from the
Washington Seminary in Atlanta in 1929 and attended
National Park Seminary. Her loving husband of 56 years
was the late William Markley Nixon II of Atlanta who
preceded her in death in 1989. A longtime resident of
Atlanta, Thomaston and Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., she
had resided at Vickars Landing in Ponte Vedra Beach
for the last five years. She was an active member of
the DAR, the Atlanta Junior League and the Peachtree
Garden Club. She was also a member of the Piedmont
Driving Club, Thomaston Country Club, Sawgrass Country
Club and the Ponte Vedra Inn. Mrs. Nixon was a member
of Saint Phillips Cathedral in Atlanta and the First
Methodist Church in Thomaston. She was preceded in
death by her son, William Markley Nixon III. Survivors
include her son, Vaughn Nixon II and his wife,
Margaret Stone Nixon of Pittsfield, Mass.; a son,
Albert Matthews Nixon and his wife, Patricia Smith
Nixon of Flowery Branch, Ga.; a grandson, Matthew
Vaughn Nixon of Newburyport, Mass.; a granddaughter,

in Gulfport, Miss. Mr. Fredericks died Nov. 24, 2003
from injuries sustained in a car accident. Mr.
Fredericks was employed at Tindall Corp. in Conley,
Ga. as an electronics engineer. He moved to Thomaston
in 1989 and moved to Atlanta in 1999. Survivors
include his mother, honorable Frances Fredericks of
Gulfport, Miss.; his wife, Maritza E. Fredericks of
Thomaston; daughters, Tanisha and Tisiah Fredericks,
both of Thomaston and Selena Phillips of Mississippi;

Stewart was a native of Pike County. She was raised in
the Neal Community of Pike County and had been a
resident of Woodbury since 1962. She was a homemaker.

F. Stewart of Woodbury and Jody S. Stewart of Molena;
a brother, Robert Stribling of Molena; grandchildren,

Funeral services for Deacon S.T. WORTHY, 92, of Walton

Mr. Worthy died Dec. 7, 2003 at Upson Regional Medical
Cewnter. Trice Funeral Home is in charge of
arrangements. Mr. Worthy was a deacon of Fellowship
Baptist Church and served as chairman for 14 years. He
was a former member of the choir and served as
president. He served several years as treasurer of the
church and was a member of the Cemetery Committee.
Deacon Worthy was a life member of the Dumas Lodge No.
225 and was a member of the Lincoln Park Citizen Club.
He was a lifelong citizen of Upson County and retired
from Martha Mill in 1976. Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Laura Worthy of Thomaston; daughter, Ms. Barbara
Worthy of Thomaston; son, Mr. Carl E. Worthy of Rancho
Cordora, Calif.; four grandchildren, Mr. Kelcey G.
(Latazah) of Atlanta, Mrs. Annette Leonard, Mr. Robert
(Patricia) King and Mr. Johnny King, all of Thomaston;
a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Willie Lee King of Thomaston;

Franklin Street, were held Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003 at 4

in Southview Cemetery. Mrs. Bland died Friday, Dec.

Mrs. Bland was born in Crawford County in 1912 but
lived in Thomaston most of her life. She was retired
from the Peerless Division of Thomaston Mills and was
a member of Emory's Chapel Baptist Church. Mrs. Bland
was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Bland,
and son, Donald Howard. Survivors include her
daughter, Barbara Fowler of Thomaston; a son, Alton
Bland of Thomaston; a brother, Billy Reeves of
Thomaston; five grandchildren; and eight great-
grandchildren.

died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003 at Upson Regional Medical

arrangements. Bobby was a lifelong resident of Upson
County and a proud citizen of Thomaston. He was a
lifelong and dedicated member of Trinity Baptist
Church and a member of the Sons of Confederate
Veterans. Bobby was a beloved son, brother, uncle and
great-uncle. He was preceded in death earlier this
year by his mother, Nellie Brooks, and by his father,
Edwin Clark Brooks, in 1999. Survivors include his
sister, Peggy B. Wisham of Knoxville, Tenn.; nephews
and their wives, Mark and Leigh Wisham of
Philadelphia, Tenn. and Jason and Amy Wisham of

Mr. Johnson was born in Atlanta in 1933 and served in
the U.S. Army in 1953. He had lived in Thomaston for
the past 12 years. Survivors include his sister,

Herschel W. "Bill" (Betty) Johnson of Snellville; and
several nieces and nephews.


Mr. Robert James "R.J." KING, 58, of Martin Luther
King Jr. Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003 at Upson

Semcheski was a native of Plymouth, Penn. and a
resident of Upson County for 40 years. He was preceded
in death by his wife, Mrs. Sallie Hudson Semcheski.
MR. SEMCHESKI RETIRED FROM THE U.S. NAVY after 22
years of service. He was also retired from the U.S.
Post Office in Jacksonville, Fla. He was a member of
St. John's Catholic Church. Mr. Semcheski was a cancer
car drive for many years. Survivors include his
brothers, Mr. John Semcheski of Philadelphia, Penn.,
Mr. Mike Semcheski of Parkersburg, Penn., Mr. Stanley
Semcheski of Wilkes-Barre, Penn and Mr. Leo Semcheski
of Nanticoke, Penn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation, along with a rosary service, will be held
Wednesday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral

Funeral services for Mr. Morris Clayton TAUNTON, 75,
of Rocky Bottom Road, were held Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003
at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Coggins Funeral Home with

Mr. Taunton died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003 at The Medical
Center of Central Georgia. Coggins Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements. Mr. Taunton was born in Taylor
County, Ga., but lived in Thomaston for many years. HE
SERVED HIS COUNTRY IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY FOR TWO
YEARS SERVING ON THE U.S.S. DIASCHENKO. HE THEN JOINED
THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE WHERE HE RETIRED AS A
STAFF SERGEANT WITH 20 YEARS OF  SERVICE. WHILE
SERVING HIS COUNTRY, MR. TAUNTON EARNED THE NATIONAL
DEFENCE SERVICE MEDAL, THE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, THE AIR
FORCE OUTSTANDING UNIT AWARD AND THE JOINT SERVICE
COMMENDATION MEDAL. Mr. Taunton was a member and
trustee of the Thomaston First Freewill Baptist Church
where he was also a member of the Adult Men's Sunday
School Class. He loved the outdoors and especially
enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. Survivors
include his wife, Mrs. Geraldine Collins Taunton of
Thomaston; daughters, Mrs. Carol (Tyler) Carpenter and
Mrs. Theresa (Leon) Puckett, all of Thomaston;
brothers, Mr. Beason Taunton and Mr. Cecil Taunton,
both of Georgetown and Mr. Roland Taunton and Mr. Zeno
Taunton, both of Thomaston; a sister, Mrs. Lynda
Passmore of Thomaston; and two grandsons, Mr. Daniel

died at Providence Nursing Home Monday, Dec. 22, 2003.

City. Mrs. Addison died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003 at

CREWS Funeral services for Mr. Buford Ellis Crews, 89,
of B Street, were held Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003 at 2
p.m. in the chapel of Coggins Funeral Home with the
Rev. Philip Thompson officiating. emtombment followed
in Upson Memorial Gardens. Mr. Crews died Tuesday,
Dec. 23, 2003 at Providence Nursing Care Center.
Coggins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Crews was born in Meriwether County, Ga. to the
late John Tyler and Mary Pearson Crews. He lived in
Thomaston for many years and retired from B.F.
Goodrich as section leader of the twister room after
over 32 years of service. Mr. Crews was a member of
New Bethel Baptist Church of Thomaston. Survivors
include his wife, Mrs. Aliene Jones Crews of
Thomaston; sons, Mr. Jeffrey M. Crews of Granite Bay,
Calif., Mr. Jerry N. Crews of Thomaston and Mr. Robert
E. Crews of Crystal Lake, Ill.; brothers, Mr. Felton
P. Crews of Snellville and Mr. James M. Crews of
Harris City; six grandchildren; and 12 great-
grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the

DARDEN Ms. Hazel Mae Darden, 64, of West Main Street,
died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 at Macon Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date
by Harper-Worthy Mortuary. Survivors include her sons,
Mr. Carey (Kim) Darden of Thomaston and Mr. Tommy Cal
Hobbs Jr. of Virginia; six grandchidren; sisters, Ms.
Sharon Holt and Ms. Carolyn Hobbs, both of Thomaston;
and a brother, Mr. Ronnie Darden of Atlanta.

DORSEY Sr. Funeral services for Mr. Claudie Haley
Dorsey Sr., 76, of B Street, will be held Tuesday,
Dec. 30, 2003 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Coggins
Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Burgess officiating.
Burial will follow in Upson Memorial Gardens. Mr.
Dorsey died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003 at his residence.
Coggins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr.
Dorsey was born in Rockdale County, Ga. to the late
Claude and Bertie Conner Dorsey. He served his country
during WWII in the United States Army. Mr. Dorsey was
retired from Topeka Auto Salvage where he worked for
over 30 years as the manager. He was a member of The
Rock United Methodist Church of The Rock, Ga. and a
member of the Thomaston VFW club. Mr. Dorsey was
preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Rosa Mae Wheeler
Dorsey and two sons, Mr. Claudie Haley Dorsey Jr. and
Mr. David Madison Dorsey. Survivors include his
daughter, Mrs. Linda Dorsey (Butch) Mundy of Griffin;
a brother, Mr. Harold Dorsey of Belton, Mo.; 11
grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Visitation
will be held Monday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the
funeral home.


ELLINGTON Funeral services for Mr. Chester Ellington,
92, of Highway 19 North, were held Sunday, Dec. 28,
2003 at 2 p.m. at East Thomaston Baptist Church with
the Rev. Joey Smith and Dr. Edwin L. Cliburn
officiating. Burial followed in Southview Cemetery.
Mr. Ellington died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003 at Upson
Regional Medical Center. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Ellington was a
native of Upson County where he lived all of his life.
He retired from the pulpwood business over 30 years
ago and had since become an avid gardener. He grew and
sold many vegetables from his garden on Highway 19
North and was known for his tomatoes. Mr. Ellington
was a member of East Thomaston Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rhunette Ellington of
Thomaston; daughters, Eloise Ellington of Yatesville
and Connie Harp and Sandra Fenley, both of Thomaston;
five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.


FULLER Funeral services for Mr. Willie "Buba" Fuller,
80, of Woodbury were held Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003 at 1
p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Woodbury
with Pastor J. D. Walker officiating. Burial followed
in the Old Walker Cemetery. Mr. Fuller died Monday,
Dec. 22, 2003 at The Georgia Baptist Meriwether
Hospital in Warm Springs. Bentley & Sons Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his
son, Mr. Ronnie Campbell of Woodbury; a sister, Mrs.
Florence Kingston of Detroit, Mich.; several nieces
and nephews and other relatives; and a devoted niece,
Mrs. Annie Ruth Campbell of Woodbury. The family can

HANCOCK Funeral services for Miss Mary Elizabeth
Hancock, 97, of Bradenton, Fla., will be held
Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the Pasley-
Fletcher Chapel with Dr. Albert E. Simmons
officiating. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.
Miss Hancock died Dec. 20, 2003 at the Westminster
Asbury Towers in Bradenton, Fla. Pasley-Fletcher
Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Miss
Hancock was a native of Thomaston. She was the
daughter of the late Mr. Ira Cleveland Hancock Sr. and
the late Mrs. Ida Mann Hancock. She had been a
resident of Bradenton, Fla. since 1972. She was a
former resident of Perry, Ga., and had lived abroad
extensively. Miss Hancock was preceded in death by her
sister, Mrs. Sarah Hancock Moore and her brother, Mr.
Ira Cleveland Hancock Jr. she retired from the U.S.
Government in 1970. Miss Hancock was a member of the
United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of
the American Revolution, and was an avid bridge
player. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Mrs.
Pauline Skipper Hancock of Bradenton, Fla.; nieces,
Mrs. Kay Hancock Apfel of Miami, Fla., Mrs. Dianne
Hancock Chapman of Budapest, Hungary, Mrs. Wansely
Hancock Walters of Miami, Fla., Mrs. Judy Moore
Brabham of Thomaston and Mrs. Jane Moore Simmons of
Tege Cay, S.C.; and nephews, Mr. S. Timothy Hancock of
St. Petersburg, Fla. and Mr. Jack Moore of Martin, Ga.
Visitation will be held Saturday, from 10 until 11
a.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be
made to a favorite charity.



LANE Funeral services for Mrs. Rhonda Davis Lane, 39,
of Locust Grove, will be held Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 at
2 p.m. in Pasley-Fletcher Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy
Baughcum officiating. Burial will follow in Upson
Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Lane died Tuesday, Dec. 30,
2003 at her residence. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home is
in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Lane was a native of
East Point, Ga. and a former resident of Thomaston.
She was an honor graduate of Flint River Technical
College where she studied computer programing. Mrs.
Lane was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include her
father, Mr. Sammie R. Davis of Sarasota, Fla.; her
step-mother, Mrs. Donna K. Davis of Sarasota, Fla.; a
daughter, Miss Sierra Lane of Thomaston; a son, Mr.
Bobby Davis of Sarasota, Fla.,; sisters, Mrs. Kim
Pittman of McDonough, Miss Tracey Davis of Locust
Grove and Miss Kasey Davis of Sarasota, Fla.; a step-
sister, Mrs. Stacey Bartlett of Gay; and a step-
brother, Mr. Todd Childree of Sarasota, Fla.

9 p.m. at the funeral home.

LYONS Funeral services for Mr. Earnest Lyons, 46, of
Barnesville, will be held Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at 1
p.m. at the West Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Lamar
County with the Rev. F. E. Fuller Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow in the O'Neal Cemetery. Mr. Lyons
died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003 at Upson Regional Medical

22, 2003 at the West Georgia Medical Center in

PRINGLE Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Lizzie Davis
Pringle, 88, of Upson County, were held Saturday, Dec.
27, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Shady Grove Baptist Church
with Pastor Fred Blackmon officiating. Burial followed
in the church cemetery. Mrs. Pringle died Monday, Dec.
22, 2003 at Providence Nursing Home. Bentley & Sons

include four children, Mrs. Margaret Ann (Joe Lewis)
Manns of Thomaston, Mrs. Johnnie Mae Searcy, Mr. W.B.
(Gladys) Pringle and Mr. James (Carolyn) Pringle, all
of Indianapolis, Ind.; several grandchildren; several
great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and

PURVIS Sr. Funeral services for Mr. John W. Purvis,
Sr., 89, of Al-buquerque, N.M,, formerly of Albany,
Ga., were held Friday, Dec. 19, 2003 at 10 a.m. at
Mathews Funeral Home in Albany with the Rev. John
Tarrer and the Rev. Ray Bowman officiating. Burial
followed in Bloodsworth Cemetery in Taylor County at 2
p.m. with full military honors. Mr. Purvis died
Monday, Dec. 15, 2003. Mathews Funeral Home of Albany
was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Purvis was a native
of Taylor County. He had resided in Albany since 1954,
before moving to Albuquerque, N.M. He was a Veteran of
World War II and retired from, the Navy as a Navy
Chief Machinist Mate. He received the Purple Heart,
American Defense, American Campaign, National Defense,
Asiatic Pacific Campaign and the U.S. Fleet Bar
Medals. He also received the Pearl Harbor
Commenmorative Medal (50th Anniversary) "For those who
served", and also The Cross of Military award
presented by, the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
He was a life member of Hammerton Masonic Lodge #332
F&M in Charleston, S.C., a member and past patron of
the O.E.S. Crepe Myrtle #613 and the Pearl Har-bor
Survivors Association. He was a member of Byne Memo-
rial Baptist Church. Survivors inclue his wife Fannie
(Frankie) Jordan Purvis of Albuquerque, N.M; three
sons, John W. Purvis, Jr. of Escondea, Calif., James
Wayne Purvis of Albuquerque, N.M. and Terry Neal
Purvis of Spring, Texas; four granddaughters, Corrina
Purvis, Crystal Purvis and Chelsea Purvis of Escondea,
Calif. and Toni Purvis of Los Angeles, Calif.; three
grandsons, Bryan N. Purvis of Albuquerque, James Neal
Purvis and Paul Andrew Purvis of Spring, Texas; two
great grand-children, Brannon John Purvis and Leandra

Thomaston; sisters, Mrs. Mary Murray, Mrs. Bettye
Walker and Mrs. Carolyn Randle, all of Thomaston; a
brother, Rev. Hildridge W. Bush Jr. of Thomaston; and

her. The family will be meeting at the home of her
mother, Mrs. Louise Bush, at 204 Roberts Street in the

TAYLOR Mrs. Elva Lee Taylor, 80, of Magnolia Avenue,
died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 at Riverside Nursing
